I have a Visual Studio 2022 ASP.net application that now displays "Error Creating Control ajax Toolkit" when viewing the Page Design:-
The application references the AjaxControlToolKit:-
And the path is pointing to the Ajax install path:-
The application builds and runs but when viewing the design page I get the "Error Creating Control" messages.
This seems to have started very recently.
Any ideas why?

Just to add to my original question It appears that the "Web Live Preview" was the issue.
I set the option back to "Legacy Web Forms Designer" and it seems ok.

And have come across a problem. In the tutorial the instructions are as follows:
Start Visual Studio 2015. From the File menu, select New > Project.
Select the ASP.NET Web Application project template. It appears under
Installed > Templates > Visual C# > Web. Name the project ContosoBooks
and click OK.
This is fine, but in the next step :
In the New ASP.NET Project dialog, select Web Application under
ASP.NET 5 Preview Templates. Also, make sure the Host in the cloud
checkbox is not selected and click OK.
I am seeing no ASP.NET 5 Preview templates!
The only thing I am noticing is that my Authentication states No Authentication but I am signed in so I am not sure what this means or whether or not this is a factor.
The version I have installed of Visual Studio is "Community 2015".
I have already gone through the perquisites as outlined in This Article.
I am hoping that someone with a more thorough knowledge on the topic can help me out as I have not been able to find any threads etc. of the same issue or what could be causing the Templates to be missing.
Asp.net 5 templates no longer exist - they are renamed to Asp.net Core: ASP.NET 5 is dead - Introducing ASP.NET Core 1.0 and .NET Core 1.0
So, when creating your project, instead of picking "ASP.NET Web Application" as it is in the video - you would select "ASP.NET Core Web Application" and then on the next page those 3 templates (Empty, Web API, Web Application) are the same as the video's asp.net 5 preview templates
VS 2015 Preview is going under ASP.net Core web application. If you cant see that one under templates you may go to this site and download .NET Core 1.0 for Visual Studio then install.
I have concluded, by following another stackoverflow question on How to check the ASP.NET version loaded on a system as I noticed that the templates were categorized in the ASP.NET versions (4.6.1 & 5) in the tutorials but mine were not.
So I then checked and my files in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework are as follows
Revealing no v5.0 directory. I rectified this and now all of the templates are available
AMENDMENT:
To fix it:
I went to http://www.asp.net/downloads and downloaded ASP.NET MVC 5
I ensured I had Developer Tools checked in the download process.
This issue was now resolved - As I then had the MVC 5 template files. Because I downloaded them, so I had them... and no longer didn't have them.
ALTERNATE FIX:
Furthermore From my research, some people had not included Developer Tools. To resolve: go to old mate 'Add or remove programs' and find your Microsoft Visual Studio 20xx install, 'change' and install Microsoft Web Developer Tools
I have had the same problem but it is actually even better because "The new dialog enables you to change the default authentication options for many of the templates. For example, when you create an ASP.NET Web Forms project you can select any of the following options:
No Authentication
Individual User Accounts (ASP.NET membership or social provider log in)
Organizational Accounts (Active Directory in an internet application)"

I recently had this problem and finally fixed it by uninstalling (control panel -> uninstall a program) Microsoft.NET Core and Microsoft Visual C++ redistrutable 2015 (x64 & x86) and then re-installing the asp.net core rc2 (https://www.microsoft.com/net/core#windows or possibly check Tools->Extensions and Updates->Updates inside of Visual Studio).
I uninstalled the Visual C++ redistrutables because I kept getting an error when trying to re-install asp.net core rc2. It kept telling me that it already existed even after I had just uninstalled it and the update was showing in the "Extensions and Updates" section of Visual Studio after trying (but failing) to install the asp.net core rc2 update.
I am trying to find the mvc5 templates for a new project. Others have asked the question but the answers keep saying we are selecting wrong options. That's not it. ..
I started with File> New> Project>
then
Templates> Visual C# > Web
then Select Asp.Net Web Application
click Ok
and the next screen only shows Empty, Web Forms and Azure Mobile Service
I also selected .Net Framework 4.51?
How can I get the mvc5 templates to show up? I don't think my VS2013 is corrupted either.

Most probably, MVC5 is not installed in your computer.
I am using Visual Studio 2010 SP 1. On opening/creating any .cshtml page (view), I am unable to find the option to see the rendered page in VS as soon as I make any change (similar to "design" tab in web-forms).
Is this not supported in VS 2010 or am I missing something?
The design view doesn't exist in MVC projects.

If you need the visual assistance when designing, you can run your application without debugging ( Ctrl - F5 ), and then once updates are made, you can refresh the web browser to view updates. It isn't real-time, but at least it is something.
In visual studio 2019 you can use the option "Show in browser" or click CTRL + SHIFT + W
has anyone else dealt with this? My ultimate goal is to create a new empty web api project. I've been following tutorials and I've encountered the following issue:
My issue is that when I try to create a ASP.NET Web Application project in Visual Studio Pro 2012 I do not see that template as an option. I go to Installed --> Templates --> Visual C# --> Web
All I see is ASP.NET Empty Web Application. So I selected that and then expected the ASP.Net project window to pop up so that I could select "Web Api". However, that dialog never opened.
Does anyone know how/where I can get the ASP.NET Web Application template?
I came across your question as I had the same problem. When I first installed Visual Studio I didn't tick the box to install the Web Components. Here is how I solved the issue:
Close all your instances of Visual Studio.
Run the Visual Studio Installer (I found mine in the Downloads folder still and was named "vs_professional.exe").
For VS 2013 a grey window appears similar to when first installing VS.
When prompted select "Modify" from the list of options.
Tick the list item which I think was named "Web Development" or something similar.
Click update.
Once the installer has finished running launch Visual Studio.
When selecting New Project in Visual Studio I can now see the required templates.
Try to select Framework 4.5.
The Framework 4.0 don't have :)

If you have ASP.NET MVC 4 Web Application as an option under Web when you select it as a new project the project window pops up and you will be able to select Web API.

I am improving an ASP.Net website using VS2010. As part of the payment flow I need to redirect to an external website (like Paypal) to process the payment before returning to my website, however this site has an error in their JavaScript that Visual Studio is trying to debug. I have no intention of debugging this third party's website. Is there a way to tell Visual Studio to only debug websites that are part of the project I am working on or just for localhost?
To answer my own question. I ended up using Chrome/Firefox to debug with instead. Visual studio doesn't try debug javascript unless you are using IE.
I could then use the javascript debugger built into Chrome to debug any javascript problems I was having on the site I was actually trying to fix.
