I had a functioning RStudio until it required updates. It no longer stored memory. After updates, I am still unable to use R Studio with Apple Silicon (M1 laptop). I am having trouble with basic functions like setwd().
My current version is: R version 4.2.0 (2022-04-22)
I followed the directions provided from RStudio:
Installed R: R 4.2.0 binary for macOS 11 (Big Sur) and higher, Apple silicon arm64 build, signed and notarized package.
Reinstalled XQuartz after downloading R
Restarted my laptop
Installed RStudio Desktop 2022.02.3+492 provided on website
I can tell there are issues because I cannot set a working directory to file on my desktop. For example:
> # Set working directory
> setwd("/Users/name/Desktop/file")
> getwd()
[1] "/Users/name"
Setting the working directory by Session > Set Working Directory > To Source File Location is not working either.
Should I download an older version? How have others remediated this?

Running happily with R 3.4 and RStudio 1.0.143 under Win10 this problem occured bringing project development to a halt. Downloads each occur and are unzipped and then the a presumably first file in the first item gets:
Error in install.packages : cannot open file 'C:/Users/Admin/Documents/R/
win-library/3.4/file30504386b80/rJava/javadoc/resources/background.gif':
Permission denied
and the prompt returns.
Updating to R version 3.4.1 (2017-06-30), RStudio Version 1.0.153 was to no avail. Using the OS to remolve all R versions and trying again with 3.4.1 did not work. Removing R again and deleting the R directory to refresh the library did not work. My virius software like to tell how helpful it has been and has not, so that issue seems unlikely.
Giving the user full control of the R library did not help.
could package-updates be a tag like install-updates?
It looks there is a problem between Java and rJava.
You should try reinstalling Java using chocolatey package manager (https://chocolatey.org/) and then reinstall rJava package.
I had a similar issue two weeks ago on a windows laptop.
I had this problem for a long time. only in RStudio.
Install the package on R and Library it. Go to RStudio and require the package.
It works!
I recently updated my macbook to macOS Sierra (Version 10.12.3 (16D32)), and I am no longer able to run R directly from Terminal:

Opening R from the Applications folder or from RStudio works fine. Anyone experience this issue/has been able to fix it?

This is just a guess, but I'm thinking this is probably an issue with your PATH settings, which might have been overwritten when you upgraded*. Seems worth a try at least. This is from the RStudio support pages**:
R from source (including MacPorts and Homebrew)
When R is installed from CRAN on OS X the R executable is installed at
/usr/bin/R. However, if R is installed directly from source or via a
package manager like MacPorts or Homebrew, then the R executable is
installed to either /usr/local/bin/R (Homebrew) or /opt/local/bin/R
(MacPorts). In order to support these variations, RStudio scans for
the R executable in the following sequence:
/usr/bin/R
/usr/local/bin/R
/opt/local/bin/R
If RStudio is not able to locate R by scanning these locations, it
will fall back to using whatever version of R is located at
/Library/Frameworks/R.framework/.
If RStudio is finding R OK, then you must have it at one of these locations. Make sure these locations are in your $PATH list:
In the Terminal:
echo $PATH
Will display your current PATHs list. If any of the locations in the RStudio quote are missing, you can see if that's where R is located by trying to specify that location. For example:
/usr/local/bin/R
If that works to start R, just add that location to your PATHs list:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin
So that OSX knows where to find it!

How do I install an old version of R on a window 10 64 PC.
I am currently running R 3.2.3 with RStudio without any problems. However a package I want to use (GSIF) only works on R2.15. I have found that it is possible to easily get RStudio to work with different R versions and I have found and downloaded the old version of R I want ( R-2.15.1-w.tar.gz) from the CRAN archives. My problems is cannot work out how to install the R-2.15.1-w.tar.gz package on a windows machine or in fact even if it is the right package for windows. All the instruction I can find seem to relate to Linux.
Any guidance greatly appreciated.
You can hold down the Control key during the launch of RStudio you can cause the R version selection dialog to display at startup.

I'm running Mac OS Maverick.
In my previous setup, the plots would correctly display on the plot tab on RStudio.
I reinstalled R with homebrew and, when I use RStudio, it gives me the following warning
WARNING: The version of R you are running against does not support the
quartz graphics device (which is required by RStudio for graphics).
The Plots tab will be disabled until a version of R that supports
quartz is installed.
When I plot something, it opens up the XQuartz app on my mac. It does display the graphs (sometimes with weird colors though), but I'd really like it to plot in RStudio itself.
Is it that homebrew has a version of R that doesn't support the quartz graphics device or have I messed up something elsewhere?
As always, any help will be very much appreciated.

I installed R with homebrew the following way
brew tap homebrew/science
brew install r
Previously I had installed tcl/tk the following way
brew tap homebrew/dupes
brew install tcl-tk --with-tk
I run into the same issue.
According to the R brew formula history the last bottled version (i.e. precompiled version, which is what is installed by default) isn't run against aqua due to some bug so the installation of R has no aqua capabilities, which is what RStudio graphics device requires.
After trying to understand the formula logic I figured that if built from source:
brew install r --build-from-source
it would compile with clang (check brew --env) and therefore correctly build against aqua. It takes a little longer to install but it worked for me. To check, from the terminal open R and see capabilities() aqua should be TRUE for RStudio's graphics device to work.
I'm using homebrewed R and Rstudio on Yosemite. I ran into the same problem, probably after I had updated R from ver. 3.1.2 to ver. 3.1.2_1.
My ad-hoc solution is
to brew uninstall R, and
to install R from CRAN.
RStudio display graphs inside its window when I use CRAN version of R. However, this is not the best solution to me, because I love to manage all unix packages using homebrew to avoid possible conflicts.
I ran into this problem too. I previously had homebrewed R installation with a working quartz graphic device, which comports with others in this thread who suggest that an update to homebrew's R script caused the problem.
I can confirm that daniel's answer works. I tried brew install r --build-from-source and quartz() has stopped throwing errors.
After installing Mavericks on my Mac, I'm not able to run Rattle anymore.
Because of compatibility issues between RStudio and 10.9 (http://www.r-bloggers.com/rstudio-and-os-x-10-9-mavericks/), I installed v 0.98.433 of RStudio and R 3.0.2
Tried to launch Rattle the normal way: none.
I tried in a different way:
I manually launched xQuartz to install GTK+
via R-Studio I installed RGtg2 and Cairo
Installed Rattle, launched it and I got 1 sec message from Rattle, before it disappeared, crashing R session.
I then tried going back to R 2.15.3 (using RSwitch), doing same procedure.
Rattle starts with no ricognizable character and a bunch of related error messages on the RStudio console, from Pango.
Problem is it is looking for a directory .../pango/1.6.0 that does not exist (I have /1.8.0).
Is there any one who came out with a working combination of R/RStudio/Rattle on Mavericks?
I have a course I'm going to teach on data mining next semester and I introduced Rattle as the core tool, but I need it running.
Going back to previous Mac OS is not an option, because students may have the latest version.
Any help would be highly appreciated
I believe that the problem is with the GTK2 and Cairo modules. After building a few packages from source, rattle works for me...
I have had difficulties with Cairo/GTK2 since Mountain Lion. I got crashes using Simon's binary packages for these. Note that I updated my system to Mavericks, so I have not tried this on a clean install... I also have Homebrew installed for building programs from source. I use the ATT binary installer for R (thanks, Simon) for most packages but build a few packages from source. There were some hiccups and I spent a lot of time searching with Google. Here is what I did:
One needs XCode and the Xcode command line tools installed. After you install XCode, you need to run
sudo xcode-select --install
to install the command line tools. Then install Homebrew according to directions from the web site... Install gtk+ and cairo with their dependencies with:
brew install gtk+ cairo
And wait quite a while for everything to build....
The first problem I had is that I couldn't build any R packages from source because of this error:
make: llvm-gcc-4.2: No such file or directory
Google to the rescue...
I needed to change two lines in Makeconf in /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Resources/etc to
CC=clang
CXX=clang++
Note: the R Mac Tools page now says this should be:
CC=/usr/local/clang4/bin/clang
CXX=/usr/local/clang4/bin/clang++
LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/clang4/lib
Then download the source packages for RGtk2, Cairo, and cairoDevice. I do all the work in my ~/bld directory with:
cd ~/bld
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/opt/X11/lib/pkgconfig:/Library/Frameworks/GTK+.framework/Versions/Current/Resources/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH
R CMD install RGtk2_2.20.25.tar.gz
R CMD install Cairo_1.5-2.tar.gz
R CMD install cairoDevice_2.19.tar.gz
