Centered element with an `aspect-ratio` take up the maximum available space - css

I'm trying to make a centered element with an aspect-ratio take up the most available space, can be either vertical or horizontal.
To do this I simply created an outer element with display: grid; place-content: center;, and an inner element with aspect-ratio.
By adding height: 100%; width: 100%; to the inner element I get it to fill the available space on Chrome and Firefox, but this doesn't work in Safari.
Any ideas why this happens?

In some cases, the parent element will have a fixed height. For vertical centering, all you have to do is set a line-height value on the child element equal to the fixed height of the parent element.
Though this solution will work in some cases, it's worth noting that it won't work when there are multiple lines of text - like this.

Unlike the first approach above, you don't want to use left:50% with the negative translation because there's an overflow bug in IE9+. Utilize a positive right value and you won't see horizontal scrollbars.

Unfortunately — but not surprisingly — the solution is more complicated than one would wish it to be. Also unfortunately, you'll need to use additional divs around the div you want vertically centered.
For standards-compliant browsers like Mozilla, Opera, Safari, etc. you need to set the outer div to be displayed as a table and the inner div to be displayed as a table-cell — which can then be vertically centered. For Internet Explorer, you need to position the inner div absolutely within the outer div and then specify the top as 50%. The following pages explain this technique well and provide some code samples too:

I am adding this answer since I found some incompleteness in the previous version of this answer (and Stack Overflow won't allow me to simply comment).
'position' relative messes up the styling if the current div is in the body and has no container div. However 'fixed' seems to work, but it obviously fixes the content in the center of the viewport
Also I used this styling for centering some overlay divs and found that in Mozilla all elements inside this transformed div had lost their bottom borders. Possibly a rendering issue. But adding just the minimal padding to some of them rendered it correctly. Chrome and Internet Explorer (surprisingly) rendered the boxes without any need for padding

Unfortunately — but not surprisingly — the solution is more complicated than one would wish it to be. Also unfortunately, you'll need to use additional divs around the div you want vertically centered.
For standards-compliant browsers like Mozilla, Opera, Safari, etc. you need to set the outer div to be displayed as a table and the inner div to be displayed as a table-cell — which can then be vertically centered. For Internet Explorer, you need to position the inner div absolutely within the outer div and then specify the top as 50%. The following pages explain this technique well and provide some code samples too:

I am adding this answer since I found some incompleteness in the previous version of this answer (and Stack Overflow won't allow me to simply comment).
'position' relative messes up the styling if the current div is in the body and has no container div. However 'fixed' seems to work, but it obviously fixes the content in the center of the viewport
Also I used this styling for centering some overlay divs and found that in Mozilla all elements inside this transformed div had lost their bottom borders. Possibly a rendering issue. But adding just the minimal padding to some of them rendered it correctly. Chrome and Internet Explorer (surprisingly) rendered the boxes without any need for padding

Though this solution will work in some cases, it's worth noting that it won't work when there are multiple lines of text - like this.

stretch: Items are stretched to fit the container.
This CSS property justify-content , which aligns items horizontally and accepts the following values:
flex-start: Items align to the left side of the container.
flex-end: Items align to the right side of the container.
center: Items align at the center of the container.
space-between: Items display with equal spacing between them.
space-around: Items display with equal spacing around them.
Just make top,bottom, left and right to 0.

If it's only about text aligning it's simple. Just use this:

Parent styling is not needed.
In some cases when the parent has some style properties it may affect the child, where this will not work properly.

I see this the shortest and easiest way. However it depends on the element width and height. So feel free to adjust more the percentages on translate(50%, 50%);.

This extension of margins in each direction will push the element exactly to the middle of its container.
In the case where I was trying to vertically align text content inside button::before and button::after, I was able to get it working using vertical-align: text-top.

}
