How to switch between legacy and new app using YARP - asp.net

I have a legacy Asp.Net Web forms app which I'm migrating to .net 5. I'm trying to migrate this piece by piece. I'm using Microsoft YARP as reverse proxy - https://github.com/microsoft/reverse-proxy which helps to retarget URLs of old application to new application without users knowing it. So this first part is done.
But now I'm facing issues where users are finding critical issues in new app and this is becoming hard to handle. So I was thinking to implement a link/button on the pages which will allow users to use legacy or new app as needed. I have seen many websites which allow to switch between classic and new version of their websites. But not sure, how should I approach this with YARP. As I see YARP configuration gets applied to all users and it is kind of static. It can be reloaded, though. In my case, User-A may want to use a page from legacy app and User-B may want to use it from new app.
I read on their site that I can write an middleware to handle custom logic but not sure how to approach this. Any guidance will be more than helpful.

You can use the migration assistant from Microsoft incremental migration tutorial to auto-setup a YARP reverse proxy.
Don't forget edit on appsettings.json, the property fallBackApp on ReverseProxy section after deploying your .NET Core application .

How to login sense/net from another asp.net website?

You have several options to achieve this, it mostly depends on your application structure, and what parts of Sense/Net do you want to use.
I recommend to give a try to Sense/Net ECM 7.0. It's in Beta stage at the moment, but you can already use the core functionality (e.g. the Content Repository, OData API, WebDav, etc...) and it's very easy to install from NuGet to an existing Asp.NET MVC project.
There is no GUI layer included at the moment, but you can use Sense/NET directly from your Asp.Net application.
If you want to use the Sense/Net WebPages Gui, there will be a package also available soon from NuGet.
If you want to keep your website separated, you can authenticate with Basic Auth, but with the next update, SN7 will support JWT authentication

How To Debug Web API Project From MVC Project In Same Solution

In VS 2012, I am attempting to create an MVC 4 web application with jQuery calls to a Web API project. (Other devs will be consuming the API with our current, native app, and probably adding to the API in the future.) So I have one project that is the Web API, and another project that is the MVC 4 website. I can only set one of them to run, and they use localhost:xxxxx.
How do I debug changes to both? For example, let's say I add a new API path /api/customer/get and then a new jQuery ajax call to that path and do something with the resulting JSON. I've changed code in both projects and want to follow it end-to-end; how do I launch both? How do I debug both?
Just to be clear, the MVC app isn't making server-side calls to the API, I'm using MVC mostly to be able to easily use bundling, minification, and (hopefully) pre-compiled Handlebars templates in .NET; the API calls are coming from jQuery. As I am still relatively new to these technologies, alternate suggestions are welcome.

The fix is to do the following:
In your solution file, click properties go to the Startup project node (if it is not already selected)
Next select Multiple startup projects. Select your website and your webservice and in the Action column make sure both of them have "Start" selected.
Now when you debug your website and put a break point in your webservice, it should hit the break point.
Coming late to the party but in case anyone else is looking for a solution, this is what was best for me: Set the Api project up to be the starting project (I needed to limit to one startup so that I could flip between browsers more easily). After firing up the service project, right click on the web/ui project and select debug, start new instance. You'll have both running and you'll seamlessly step from web to api.
I had a similar problem with my web api project. My solution consisted of an angular front end with 2 web api projects on the backend. One web api project handled "authorization" and the other handled "resources". I used the following tutorial by Taiseer Joudeh as a starting point:

Breakpoints worked on the "authorization server"... but not on the "resource server". I compared the packages from the two projects to see what was different. Once I added "Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.Cors" to the "resource server" project, the breakpoints starting working.

VB6 and ASP.NET interoperability

I am supporting an ASP.NET app, which is installed on a web server and a VB6 app installed on a different app server. There is code duplication in the VB6 app and the ASP.NET app. I want to use some of the code in the ASP.NET app in VB6. I believe I have three options:
Expose the required functionality in an ASP.NET web service. The VB6 app will consume the web service.
Rewrite a small section of the vb6 app in .NET and extend the asp.net app. This will eliminate some of the code duplication.
Setup a class library for the ASP.NET app. Install the vb6 app on the web server. Expose the required functionality from the class library in a type library.
Which option is best? I believe option 2 is best.
Option 1. That leaves your shared, already-tested code on the most modern platform.
This is very hard to answer, as it varies for each company and each situation.
As a general rule, I'm very much in favor of using web services where possible, especially if multiple applications are using the same logic for the following reasons:
If I have to change the logic, I can do it in one place and fix all apps that depend on it
The same can be said for database connection strings, etc.
A bug fix can also often be fixed in one place.
I've had difficulties with a particular database that I need to deal with, where the vendor's updates tend to break their .NET adapter. Twice I had to modify/recompile a ton of apps to resolve this. Since then, we made it a policy to connect to that DB only via web services, so I'll only need to update one app in the future.
When developing mobile apps, the simple fact that we already had all our code in web services makes it that much easier to write apps that are strictly UI and leaving the business/database access logic as-is in existing web services.
All of those are pretty much "Standard" arguments for the SOA approach.
All things considered, my first recommendation, not knowing your specifics would be option #1.
There is a fourth option - a total rewrite of the VB6 app, if it's feasible, and if you can convince those who control the budgets and time allotment. Even with that, you can use the Service Oriented Architecture and split much of the logic into web services.

How to add wcf functionality to an existing asp.net website project

I have several asp.net website projects for various sites.
Currently I want to add REST API's to these projects so I can start developing mobile apps (using HTML5/JavaScript/CSS3 and PhoneGap) that make use of these webservices.
Since WCF is far more powerful than regular asp.net webservices (among others with control over the service and authentication/authorization), I'd love to add these to my existing website project.
I did a Google search but cant find anywhere a step-by-step tutorial how this can be done. And also if there's any functionality I'd possibly loose when adding WCF functionality
I was also thinking of creating a new project specifically for WCF, but think I'd rather add it to an existing website project.
Can anyone help me with this?
Depending on exactly what your needs are and how your current web site is configured, there are two approaches.
If you are using a Web Site Project, then you should create your WCF service in a different application:
1) Create a new ASP.Net Web Application Project.
2) Add a new item to the project and select the type of WCF Service or WCF Data Service.
When you deploy this project, you will deploy it to your web server, but not as part of your web site since configuring the web.config will be a large manual effort.
If you are using a Web Application Project, then you could add the WCF Service directly to your existing project. However, I only recommend this approach if you are Silverlight applets within the web site that rely on the user's authenticated credentials.
WCF can be configured with a lot of bindings and it can be configured to return xml or json(.net 4.0). Try to create a wcf service configured to use basichttpbinding or wsHttpBinding and to format the response as json and use jquery to interact with the wcf service. Can I convert a non-MVC asp.net application to be Azure compatible ? Or If i want to create an Azure web application, should it be MVC one ?
The other answers answered your question about converting your app to MVC for deployment to Azure (you don't need to).
If you're creating a new web application and go with ASP.NET MVC (which I'd recommend), just remember if you go with MVC3, you may have to make some of the MVC3 DLL's CopyLocal for your deployment, as it won't be part of your web role instance. At least that's how I still understand it. The 1.4 SDK of the Azure SDK doesn't have a MVC3 Web Role template yet.

Yes, you can. But you need to be aware of certain limitations too, none of which were mentioned in the answers already given:
Your application should be stateless, unless you are running a single instance (for most apps 99,9% reliability is OK, but there are some where you want 99,95%, so you need at least two instances + it gives you additional benefits of a load balancer, etc.). The reason for this is that if you have more than one instance, the load balancer will deliver the request to a different instance. You can use AppFabric Cache to solve this.
You don't have a file system - this is not entirely true, but in reality you should never rely on having local files. All you image uploads (e.g. user profile pictures) should be uploaded to a blob storage and linked to there. How you do this is another matter, and one that can be approached differently depending on the architecture of your existing application. You can get away with files, by using Azure Drive, but it's slow as hell.
No Event Log / RDP - this is also only partially true, but you should rely on other ways of getting diagnostics information from your role. While you can RDP to your role instance, there are better ways (e.g. Azure Diagnostics storage).
Database should be chosen carefully. Sure, you have SQL Azure available, but it's expensive (1 GB = 10 USD/ month). If you can get away with stuff like Table Storage, you may save on some costs. Again, this depends a lot on the architecture.
As for the second part of your answer. MVC as a pattern is nice. It saves you a lot of time, it's much more adapt for the Web as WebForms ever will be. The event based system was designed for Desktop applications, and it was forced onto the web. However, going to Azure does not imply a requirement to go to MVC. What I suggest you do however, is treat it as a nice jump-start opportunity to look into MVC and see how it could help you write your apps better & faster.
As with any other case involving architecture of apps, it depends. If you used common patterns (e.g. IOC, Repository), you will have a really easy time moving any app to Azure.
