Vue 3 Composition API: Array.length Not Reactive - vuejs3

I'm struggling to figure out how to make properties of an array reactive. Is this possible? In the example below, the filteredResults array itself is reactive, and working, but neither the resultCountRef (wrapped in reactive()) nor the resultCount fields are reactive. In otherwords, if I click the Filter for Apples button, the filteredResults changes to just the one item, but the two count fields remain at 3. Note that using {{filteredResults.length}} in the template does work as expected. Here is a working sample.

The reason why reactive is not working is because filteredResults.value.length returned a simple number and not referencing to anything.

The returned object is simply providing an observable object that wraps the object/value/array passed in (in my case the filteredResults.length value). That returned object resultCountRef is the object that is tracked and can be then modified, but that's useless in my case and it's why reactive didn't work. )
As the resultCount depends on filteredResults, you can use computed to monitor the change

This is possible several different ways. There's two issues that need to be addressed.
The variable has to be made available. You can use vue's expose function in setup (but getting the value is really messy: wrapper.__app._container._vnode.component.subTree.component.exposed😱) or just include it in the return object (accessible through wrapper.vm).
change how you mutate the data in the test.
your test has

even if setData was able to override the internal, it would not work.
the problem is that the setup function has this

where editable is using a computed generated from that instance of myData. If you override myData with a separate reactive, the computed will still continue to use the old one. You need to replace the contents of the reactive and not the reactive itself
To update the entire content of the reactive, you can use:

you can make that a method in your component, or just run that from the test. If you update any value within the reactive (like myData.myObject) you can skip the Object.asign

It is not possible through setData
from the docs:
setData
Updates component internal data.

Details:
setData does not allow setting new properties that are not defined in the component.
Also, notice that setData does not modify composition API setup() data.
It seems that updating internals with composition API is incompatible with setData. See the method name setData, refers to this.data and was likely kept in the vue test utils mostly for backwards compatibility.
I suspect the theory is that it's bad practice anyway to test, what would be considered, an implementation detail and the component test should focus on validating inputs an outputs only. Fundamentally though, this is a technical issue, because the setup function doesn't expose the refs and reactives created in the setup.
There is a MUCH easier way to do this.....
Put your composables in a separate file
Test the composables stand alone.

This just 'works'. You don't have to deal w/ mounting components or any other stuff, you are JUST TESTING JAVASCRIPT. It's faster and much cleaner. It seems silly to test the template anyway.
One way to make this easier to test is to put all of your dependencies as arguments to the function. For instance, pass in the props so it's easy to just put in dummy values as need. Same for emits.
You can tests watches as well. You just need to flush the promise after setting the value that is being watched:

React useState() hook returns initial value [duplicate]

I am trying to learn hooks and the useState method has made me confused. I am assigning an initial value to a state in the form of an array. The set method in useState is not working for me, both with and without the spread syntax.
I have made an API on another PC that I am calling and fetching the data which I want to set into the state.

Neither setMovies(result) nor setMovies(...result) works.
I expect the result variable to be pushed into the movies array.
Much like .setState() in class components created by extending React.Component or React.PureComponent, the state update using the updater provided by useState hook is also asynchronous, and will not be reflected immediately.
Also, the main issue here is not just the asynchronous nature but the fact that state values are used by functions based on their current closures, and state updates will reflect in the next re-render by which the existing closures are not affected, but new ones are created. Now in the current state, the values within hooks are obtained by existing closures, and when a re-render happens, the closures are updated based on whether the function is recreated again or not.
Even if you add a setTimeout the function, though the timeout will run after some time by which the re-render would have happened, the setTimeout will still use the value from its previous closure and not the updated one.

If you want to perform an action on state update, you need to use the useEffect hook, much like using componentDidUpdate in class components since the setter returned by useState doesn't have a callback pattern

As far as the syntax to update state is concerned, setMovies(result) will replace the previous movies value in the state with those available from the async request.
However, if you want to merge the response with the previously existing values, you must use the callback syntax of state updation along with the correct use of spread syntax like

Additional details to the previous answer:
While React's setState is asynchronous (both classes and hooks), and it's tempting to use that fact to explain the observed behavior, it is not the reason why it happens.
TLDR: The reason is a closure scope around an immutable const value.
Solutions:
read the value in render function (not inside nested functions):

Explanation why it happens:
If async was the only reason, it would be possible to await setState().
However, both props and state are assumed to be unchanging during 1 render.
Treat this.state as if it were immutable.
With hooks, this assumption is enhanced by using constant values with the const keyword:

The value might be different between 2 renders, but remains a constant inside the render itself and inside any closures (functions that live longer even after render is finished, e.g. useEffect, event handlers, inside any Promise or setTimeout).

I know that there are already very good answers. But I want to give another idea how to solve the same issue, and access the latest 'movie' state, using my module react-useStateRef.
As you understand by using React state you can render the page every time the state change. But by using React ref, you can always get the latest values.
So the module react-useStateRef let you use state's and ref's together. It's backward compatible with React.useState, so you can just replace the import statement

React's useEffect has its own state/lifecycle. It's related to mutation of state, and it will not update the state until the effect is destroyed.
Just pass a single argument in parameters state or leave it a black array and it will work perfectly.

The closure is not the only reason.
Based on the source code of useState (simplified below). Seems to me the value is never assigned right away.
What happens is that an update action is queued when you invoke setValue. And after the schedule kicks in and only when you get to the next render, these update action then is applied to that state.
Which means even we don't have closure issue, react version of useState is not going to give you the new value right away. The new value doesn't even exist until next render.

I too was stuck with the same problem. As other answers above have clarified the error here, which is that useState is asynchronous and you are trying to use the value just after setState. It is not updating on the console.log() part because of the asynchronous nature of setState, it lets your further code to execute, while the value updating happens on the background. Thus you are getting the previous value. When the setState is completed on the background it will update the value and you will have access to that value on the next render.

I found this to be good. Instead of defining state (approach 1) as, example,

This resolved the rerender issue without using useEffect since we are not concerned with its internal closure approach with this case.
P.S.: If you are concerned with using old state for any use case then useState with useEffect needs to be used since it will need to have that state, so approach 1 shall be used in this situation.
If we have to update state only, then a better way can be if we use the push method to do so.

useAsyncDeepState is a deep state implementation (similar to this.setState (patchObject)) whose setter can return a promise synchronized with the internal effect. If the setter is called with no arguments, it does not change the state values, but simply subscribes to state updates. In this case, you can get the state value from anywhere inside your component, since function closures are no longer a hindrance.

Not saying to do this, but it isn't hard to do what the OP asked without useEffect.
Use a promise to resolve the new state in the body of the setter function:

Use the Background Timer library. It solved my problem.

Now you should see, that your code actually does work. What does not work is the console.log(movies). This is because movies points to the old state. If you move your console.log(movies) outside of useEffect, right above the return, you will see the updated movies object.

easy-peasy computed does not take inputs

The Redux library easy-peasy has a function called computed which is an alternative to standard Redux selectors:

The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a way to pass inputs to the selector. If I need a specific object in an array in the state, I can't pass the ID of the object as an input. My only option is to do this on the component side. Redux selectors have the advantage of being functions, so I can pass inputs to be used in the selector logic.
Anyone use easy-peasy come across this problem before?

To enable this, you have to return a function as your computed property.
Here is an example, exposing a computed function getTodoById:

Remove item from redux form field array by its name and not index

Redux Form has FieldArray field:

I am trying to delete multiple of items from it but remove() method only works for a single removal perhaps because each time the fields get one item smaller and the index determined by me is bigger than the fields array:

I was not able to actually find a way to remove fields one by one with fields.remove but ultimately I solved it by using a reducer and updating Redux Form state using change method:

onMounted hook is not called by Vue

I have two components, one is managing data, the other is a vue template. I have simplified them here. The problem is that when the locations come in via the fetch, the locations in the vue template stays empty. I've checked with isRef() and that returns true, but it's just an empty array. Looking in the Vue dev tools panel, the locations does have elements in the array.

When loadImageData() is called from the Location.vue component, locations is always an empty array. Why doesn't it get updated in that function as it does in other places within the app?
onMounted is a hook registration function.
These lifecycle hook registration functions can only be used synchronously during setup(), since they rely on internal global state to locate the current active instance (the component instance whose setup() is being called right now). Calling them without a current active instance will result in an error.

To explain it further. You do not have to call onMounted (or any other hook registration function) directly inside setup(). It is perfectly fine to place that call into separate composition function outside any component (as you did) but that function must then be used from inside the setup()
