Keep Spaces in Rd Files - r

I'd like to retain multiple spaces in the \details{} section's text of an Rd help file, which by default are compressed to one single space.
The result should look like:
Either this is super trivial or impossible. Any ideas out there?

Just add \verb{ } or in roxygen2 ` `, with proper numer of spaces .

How to preserve white space at the start of a line in .Rd documentation?

I need to indent some math stuff in the \details section of my .Rd documentation to enhance its readability. I am using mathjaxr. Is there any way to indent without installing roxygen2 or similar?
The math stuff is inline, so simply setting to display using \mjdeqn won't solve this.
I seem to have a reasonable "cheating" work around for indenting the first line using mathjaxr, at least for the PDF and HTML output.
We need to do two things:
Use the mathjax/LaTeX phantom command. phantom works by making a box of the size necessary to type-set whatever its argument is, but without actually type-setting anything in the box. For my purposes, if I want to indent, say, about 2 characters wide, I would start the line with a \mjeqn{\phantom{22}}{ } and following with my actual text, possibly including actual mathy bits. If I want an indent of, say, roughly 4 characters wide, I might use \mjeqn{\phantom{2222}}{ }.
Because mathjaxr has a problem with tacking on unsolicited new lines when starting a line with mjeqn, we need to prefix the use of phantom in 1 above with an empty bit of something non-mathjaxr-ish like \emph{}.
Putting it all together, I can indent by about 2 characters using something like this:
\emph{}\mjeqn{\phantom{22}}Here beginneth mine indented lineā€¦
I need to explore whether the { } business actually indents for ASCII output, or whether I might accomplish that using or some such.

R removes spaces in read.table

I came across some surprising behavior today that doesn't seem right to me. I have a CSV file with several columns, some numeric and some text. One of my text columns contains extra spaces between some words. When I read this file into R using read.csv (or more generally read.table), it removes the extra spaces. I am not talking about leading or trailing whitespace, but spaces inside the string.
I have looked through the docs and nowhere can I find an option to turn off this behavior. Surely there must be a way to tell R to read the data as it is and not remove these spaces. Or is there?

read.table unable to read tab delimited file?

I'm having trouble reading this table into R:
http://www.census.gov/popest/about/geo/state_geocodes_v2012.txt
I tried all of the following:
read.table("http://www.census.gov/popest/about/geo/state_geocodes_v2012.txt")
read.table("http://www.census.gov/popest/about/geo/state_geocodes_v2012.txt",skip=7,header=FALSE)
read.table("http://www.census.gov/popest/about/geo/state_geocodes_v2012.txt",skip=8,header=FALSE)
read.table("http://www.census.gov/popest/about/geo/state_geocodes_v2012.txt",skip=10,header=FALSE)
If I tell it that the separator is a tab, i get the wrong table:
d = read.table(file="http://www.census.gov/popest/about/geo/state_geocodes_v2012.txt",header=FALSE,skip=7,sep="\t")
the only thing that seems to work is readLines. but then i don't know how to get a data.frame out of each line.
d =readLines("http://www.census.gov/popest/about/geo/state_geocodes_v2012.txt")
any suggestions? thanks.
I agree that read.fwf will work, once you've worked out the widths.
But, Yeah -- I just hate people who allow whitespace inside elements (e.g. "SouthDakota" ) . One other thing you can do is edit the source text file, replacing {2,N} spaces with a tab. That will leave the state names as-is but give you a workable delimiter.

Improperly formatted CSV, how to repair?

I have a csv, and each line reads as follows:
"http://www.videourl.com/video,video title,video duration,thumbnail,<iframe src=""http://embed.videourl.com/video"" frameborder=0 width=510 height=400 scrolling=no> </iframe>,tag 1,tag 2",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Is there a program I can use to clean this up? I'm trying to import it to wordpress and map it to current fields, but it isn't functioning properly. Any suggestions?
Just use search and replace in this case. remove the commas at the end and then replace the remaining commas with ",".
Should anyone else have the same issue. Know that this solution will only work with data much like the example giving. If data has a lot of text and there are commas within the text that need kept. Then search replacing comma will not work. Using regex would be the next option and that can be done in Notepad ++
However I think the regex pattern depends on the data so not much point creating an example.
PHP could be used to explode each line also. Remove values that match a regex out of many i.e. URL, money. Then what is left could be (depending on the data again) just a block of text. That approach may not work if there are two or more columns with a lot of text

What is the best invisible character can I use to replace ?

I use some telerik report to print some report.
I need to use Telerik.Reporting.TextBox to print labels.
Some labels are stock in .txt files, like " Apple".
When I see a label with spaces, it means I have to indent it in the report, so in the TextBox.
The thing is when we export the report in pdf, we have the indentation, but not when we see in the browser. If I replace the spaces by "& nbsp;", we see the indentation in the browser, but when exporting to pdf, we see the "& nbsp;".
One way to do this is to use HtmlTextBox, so both the browser and the export works fine, but we have other constraints that says we must keep the TextBox.
My idea is to replace the spaces by a blank character, an invisble one, like alt+0160, but there is a lot of choice, and I want the one that will work in any browser, any export (TIFF, PDF, Excel...).
Is someone have a good clue about this choice ?
You could use Unicode code point U+00A0 (non-breaking space), which is what the entity represents. How this should be encoded in your document depends on the character set in use.
You can replace the with ""
