I have deployed a basic openstack using devstack. now I want to install additional component like designate or magnum. What is the way to do that?
I would try the Magnum installation guide. It gives you two options: Install using apt/yum/zypper packages, or install using pip.
You need to ensure you install the version that matches your Devstack version. E.g. if your Devstack is Ussuri, use Ussuri instructions.
Another possibility might be amending local.conf and rerun stack.sh. I am not sure if this breaks already installed software, though.
The safest solution is to add the enable_plugin directives for Magnum to local.conf before you deploy the cloud.

Currently I'm working on installing the net-snmp package on bunch of RHEL servers (versions vary from 5.x ~ 6.x).
To be specific, I need net-snmp.x86_64 and net-snmp-utils.x86_64 to create /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf file.
In normal cases, I'd just use yum to simply install them but the servers I'm working on has a firewall blocking all connections except the ones specified in the firewall.
I'm also not allowed to configure the firewall to enable yum to download the packages online due to security reasons (not sure why, though).
So I downloaded the net-snmp-5.8.tar.gz file to my PC and SCP'd it to the servers and tried to manually install it there.
But since I'm no expert on this, I just couldn't get them installed with the information online.
The files seem to be running but it doesn't create the snmpd.conf file that I need, or any other SNMP configs.
Is there a guide to installing these packages properly using the tar.gz file? Or is there something wrong here?

Have you run the snmpconf script? If I remember correctly it should have been installed along with net-snmp and it will generate an snmpd.conf file that is at least a good starting point if not the final one you'll want.
Newton user guide for openstack newton mentions the command show for a stack. Example: openstack stack show <stack_name>.
However, latest docs stein don't mention anything about this command. How can I show stack info in latest openstack/openstackclient release (stein at the moment of writing this question)?
make sure you have not outdated version of python-openstackclient
just install it with pip in venv and then install python-heatclient from pip as well
That same functionality is still there. Check out https://docs.openstack.org/python-heatclient/stein/cli/stack.html
If the command is missing in your environment, then you probably just need to install python-heatclient. It is not available by default with the unified openstack client.
I have an Elastic Beanstalk web application using Amazon Linux AMI that requires the latest build of nginx. The nginx build that comes with AMI version 2018.03 is version 1.12.1, whereas the latest stable build on nginx.org is 1.15.4. Only 1.12.1 is available from Amazon's yum repositories. The preferred strategy we would like to use would be to create a custom RPM and pull that from an endpoint and install. How would I go about creating a custom RPM of nginx that would run on Amazon Linux? Or is there a pre-built source that I could take advantage of?

I personally got it working with a mix of the code from those two sources. I also had to yum install gcc to get make to work, and had to manually add the folder /var/cache/nginx before the nginx service would work. Happy upgrading!
I got stuck installing "git clone https://gitlab.com/guile-git/guile-git.git". In which directory is this supposed to be cloned and installed?
Dunno if you're still looking for an answer but it doesn't seem you need this installed to install guix; the read-me of the repository says that you can install it via guix. guix is an agnostic package manager that you can install on any Linux distribution alongside the default package manager and guix is the default package manager of the GuixSD operating system (https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/).
If you're on a distro which doesn't use guix, you may not want to install guix (I've yet to find reason enough to, yet); if you use a lot of GNU tools or Guile (some Guile packages are available through guix), you may want to.
Most repositories that don't have a binary for you to run follow the build process of configure, make, and [sudo ]make install.
I cloned the repository, myself, and find that this one does, as well.
Get a terminal (if you haven't been using one, yet) and cd into the directory you cloned the repository to and then cd into the guile-git directory (cd guile-git).
If we do ls -l, we'll see that the only executable file there is the bootstrap one; I've never seen one before but doing ./bootstrap generates the configure file and sets up the make process for us. So now back in familiar territory.
Given these are Guile files, we'll probably want to install this under the same prefix as where Guile is installed so run which guile. I believe, if you install it under Ubuntu (I'm running Linux Mint), it'll install to /usr/bin/ but, if you install it manually, it'll install to /usr/local/bin/.
The latter is where mine is and that's the default prefix that configure uses so I can just do ./configure; if you wanted to install it under /usr/, run /.configure --prefix=/usr/.
This'll verify that all of the necessary libraries and programs that guile-git needs are installed and properly setup. Heads up that configure balked at me over not having the Guile module bytestructures installed (https://github.com/TaylanUB/scheme-bytestructures) so you may need to do that.
I'm not going to run through everything to get it installed but, once you can run it without any errors, run make to build it within the directory.
If you want to install it permanently on your computer with the rest of your operating system able to detect it, run make install. Since you'll likely've specified a directory under /usr, you'll have to do sudo make install so that the make process can have permissions to install under /usr/local or /usr.
Sorry if I reiterated anything you already knew; 'just didn't want to assume you knew something and result in confusion.
It sounds very basic but I haven't found clear instructions on how to do this. I'm new on openstack. I have setted up devstack on my laptop, I have created an instance from a cirros image and now I would like this image to run a jar. I was expecting this to work in a similar way as Amazon EMR for instance, but obviously it doesn't. Any help or hints for straightforward tutorials will be appreciated.
The cirros image doesn't include Java nor does it include a facility for installing additional packages. You should boot using a full distribution of some sort (e.g., Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc), and then proceed to install Java following instruction appropriate for that distribution.
Once you have Java installed, you can install and run your jar file.
