Multi-language support on R flexdashboard - r

I would like to add language support into my dashboard relied on R flexdashboard. Currently figures, axes, titles, etc have only single language but I would like to extend the entire content for multiple languages. Basically the user should be able to select which language he/she needs throughout the panel. What is the best infrastructure in order to handle this scenario? Language selection should be handled with action button (at least for 2 languages)? Contents should be stored in a json file? Any implementational suggestion or minimal code example for this scenario?
Thanks in advance

PDF export in a Shiny App with Plotly charts, HTML template and parameters

I have a quite large Shiny application with dozens of plotly charts (and many tables and calculations) that can be used online, but the main feature is that clients generate PDFs. The PDF generation is done now on the client side, i.e. with clients browser (IE) and their locally installed digital printer using specially prepared HTML template & CSS file for the optimal layout that covers a long list of the very specific PDF design requirements that cannot be covered easly with RMD.
The solution is far from the optimal as it requires "a lot of clicks" for the end users and is very sensitive to any client's local settings (like print margins) which are not always possible to set with the CSS file.
My questions is:
is it possible to shift the PDF generation to the server side as sort of digital printer that is installed on the server, so all the layout requirements are covered and user's parameters (like date) are applied, ideally without a need to recalculate everything to get the results? I was already considering writting this in LaTeX, but it would be a very complicated job due to very specific layout requirements.
There is a page in the Shiny documentation about this exact topic. Basically you create a report.Rmd that takes the user inputs and uses it as variables for printed plots.
Here is a working example with HTML output.
edit: Didn't see your design requirements at first, sorry. Maybe those can be covered using a LaTeX background or the like?

How to implement specific functionality in a custom text object in pyQt?

I need to implement a specific text object in QEdit PyQt. I need rich objects that will content special information, capture the keyboard arrow keys only when cursor text is on these objects. They need support selection and copy / paste operations also. Outside of them, the cursor must act as normal behavior. At this time, the object does not need to show images or svg etc. Is only for capture text cursor purposes and to store specific information related with the object.
I read that I can implement a customized text object with this example:
textobject.py
but the example does not contain information about implement new html tags, how to capture focus, etc.
My questions are:
How can I add a new html tag related with my custom object for loading and saving documents?
How can I detect when text cursor is on the custom object to modify keyboard cursor behavior?
PyQt documentation says:
"Copy and Paste operations ignore custom text objects."
So is no way to implement copy / paste functionality?
How can I access to my custom object content?
I want to have specifics methods to navigate within the information contained in the object. I could save this information in another object, but I need to synchronize the information with the cursor because a document can contain many of these objects.
Context for my application: I'm developping a very specific application for blind users. I am blind myself. I need to make very specifics customizations to the Richttext area for accessibility. The goal is to develop an accessible math equation editor. For this, I need to add support for mathMl tag. I will process mathMl content inside these tags in my custom object, this part is already implemented at basic level without using any GUI framework. At this time I don't need to show the equation in the screen, I let to screen readers interact with my editor via a COM object. At this time, the equation box is functional, but I need to integrate this functionality in a rich text area. the idea is, a document can contain N math expressions that can be read, modified and saved in a document.
I plan to implement accessibility for sighted people also in the equation editor, but it is beyond my skills and is not a priority right now.
Also I need to accessibilize tables in rich text area, currently tables are not accesible in QT. Then I think to extend qt table functionality. Style elements like headings etc, does not exist in pyQt. OK, you can write a paragraph with heading style, but screen readers can't detect it. So I need to develop this functionality. I could solve it with customized objects I think.
Currently it need to work in windows only. Maybe later I'll consider other platforms.
I started to program in pyQt yesterday, but I already read a lot of documentation. I wrote a basic rich text editor to test my requirements.
I already tried to implement this application with wxPython phoenix because I've been using WX for a long time. But I couldn't implement custom text objects and I didn't find documentation about it.
If pyQt is limited for my requirements, could you recoment another gui framework?
Y could consider another languages, I chose Python because Python has many math tools like sympy or numpy, and implement user scripting functionality in the app is very easy.
Sorry for my bad english.

Building a bespoke PDF brochure via web form or CMS

I'd like to set up a CMS that allows clients to generate a PDF brochure from a series of text inputs and text areas (rich text editor). Clients would fill out text inputs and then select (via a check box) which contents should appear in the exported PDF. This would then stitch together a PDF brochure containing pages only applicable to the options chosen by the client.
All the content is in a CMS with web pages and pdfs built on the fly as per the client's choices. A change in the content is then reflected immediately in the published docs meaning no redundant, out of date pdfs and the benefit of all the tools within the CMS (workflow, publishing dates, security, etc).
Does anyone know of any tools that do this?
Appreciate any help.
well your question require a lot of work to be done. I had similar requirement and what i have done i can brief here. I created multiple views which lets me select their columns and i have used my own rules for differentiating columns from test like {view.columnname}. when your save all information i have used itextsharp for pdf generation.
There is plenty of information on itextsharp.
You might be able to do this with design tools and reporting software, plugged into your CMS of choice. For example, you could use Wordpress, and then design your PDF output using iReport, and run it with Jasper. You'd have to work on the bit to translate user inputs to a query passed to the report, but that shouldn't be too much work.
One issue is that, regardless of the work you put into the design, when you attempt to share it, it wont look like a brochure at all, only sequential single page PDFs. As an alternative I found a website where you can upload or design your brochure, it can then be downloaded and shared as a flippable, digital brochure. Designing and writing letters from ASP.Net

I have a requirement to write a system to allow users to create letters from a selection of templates within asp.net.
The letters will vary from fixed format that cannot be edited, allowing the edit of some parts, through to completely free form. After the letter is created there will then be a mail merge to add name, address and any other 'fields' embedded in the letter template before finally being rendered to pdf.
I have been looking at reporting components to assist in the creation/editing/rendering of the reports but I'm not certain if many of the features are overkill for what I am trying to achieve.
What sort of components are out there to assist with this type of application?
I use Logixml for a while for and application like that. It's free, web based and you could generate PDF out of it using HTML based formatting.

The best approach for multilingual user interface

I am working on a multilingual web application. I'm wondering how do i design the best user interface that the user can localize data for various languages? for instance, in making a page which its title is different in every lang, do i put a textbox for every one? it's not a suitable way to do(in case of 10 lang, the user has 10 textbox!!! too silly)
what is your idea about this?
Edit: i have no problem with globalization in my system. in fact, i'm looking for a good way for my interface design which user can enter his data to my forms in various langs.
thanks in advance
What about only one textfield and a dropdown containing the languages. After selecting the language and filling out the textfield the field gets submitted and the chosen language disappears from the dropdown list.
the entered value and language then appears beneath the dropdown and textbox with a way to edit/delete it. this way it's always clear to the user which languages are already covered and which values are assigned to them. furthermore it's a nicer way if not all 10 languages have to be mandatorily filled in, if the user e.g. just knows english and french.
Hope you know what I mean, otherwise I'll have to create an example screenshot :-)
You could have 3 text boxes, and that's fine...get to 10, and it starts getting a bit crazy. Beyond that it starts looking pretty bad.
Maybe you could put up to say 5 text boxes up...but if it goes beyond 5 (because the user desires localization for more than 5 places) it places a single textbox with a dropdown next to it, and the dropdown would contain the current language.
Textbox would auto-populate with the current value for the language selected in the dropdown. Should work well in asp.net, and it can be done both client side, or server side on a post back pretty easily, so you don't need to do anything crazy for people not running javascript.
You have one text box.
On load you populate the text box depending on language.
The content will be populated from some kind of resource file. If there isn't much text it could even go in your config file.
Be aware of the following:
Different content length depending on language.
Right to Left alphabets screwing up your alignment
This is a classic project for using NUNIT or similar to promve that things work after new translations are added!
What language do you use in development? If this is something like PHP, then you definitely should use templates and load text strings into them from configuration files for every language. In Smarty, for example, I use configuration files for that.
Text strings for error messages or something like that could be put to files like .ini and loaded from there.
The Google Web Toolkit (GWT) demo shows the same page with versions available in English, French, Arabic and Chinese.
The GWT docs have a thorough discussion of internationalization. You could emulate their implementation.
Constants: Useful for localizing typed constant values
Messages: Useful for localizing messages requiring arguments
ConstantsWithLookup: Like Constants but with extra lookup flexibility for highly data-driven applications
Dictionary: Useful when adding a GWT module to existing localized web pages
Remember that dates and times are represented differently in different locales, if your forms use them.
The W3C also discusses Internationalization Best Practices in HTML content.
Normally, a user navigating a website will have a preference specifying the language of the whole site. I think it would be confusing to break this pattern.
So, in an intro page, or a user preferences page, allow the user to select a language; then, on the other pages, display a consistent set of controls to be able to edit the content on each page.
Are you making an administration page that allows users to change the text used in other pages in the application?
If so, you could use grid like in Zeta Resource Editor:

Or you could make a per-language list like in nopCommerce:

You can use javascipts as a resource file for your language like. language_arabic.js, language_english.js,etc.So when a use wants to see his preference language he/she has select the available languages from drop down list. Regarding this the user has to change the language settings from his/her computer. This is what I did while I was working a GIS project to customize a Geocortex IMF( http://demos.geocortex.net/imf-5.2.2/sites/demo_geocortex/jsp/launch.jsp ) site for an Arabic client.
