I am creating an app as my homework that takes in customer information and register it using derby database and javafx. Once registered, the new customer will appear on a tableview. I've been trying to add rows to tableview but java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException keeps popping up and I have no idea what is going on. I want to retrieve data from my derby database and show it in a tableview in my app. When you open the app, there is an option to add new customer. When clicked on the option to add new customer, a new window will pop up that asks for the new customer's information. I have made a separate FXML file for the new customer entry window and a separate controller for it (neither are shown here). After entering all of the required information on the customer entry window, you click on the submit button and the entered information will be inserted into the derby database, then the NewCustomerEntryController class will call the "handleNewSubmit" method in the "RetailSystemController" class (shown below). Please see my code below and the exception that pops up.
This is the main class that overrides the start method of javafx and I have set up my driver and URL connection for derby in this class
package retailsystem;

at retailsystem.RetailSystemController.handleNewSubmit(RetailSystemController.java:127)
at retailsystem.CustomerInformationController.handleSubmit(CustomerInformationController.java:102)
... 55 more
The NullPointerException is occurring on the line
tView.setItems(items);
tViewis a TableView defined in your FXML file; it will be initialized in the controller when the FXML file is loaded. The reason it is null when you call handleNewSubmit() is that you are not calling that method on the controller, but on an arbitrary object you created (of the same class as the controller):
private void handleSubmit(ActionEvent event) throws Exception {
// ...
RetailSystemController retailcontroller = new RetailSystemController();
retailcontroller.handleNewSubmit();
// ...
}
The best way to solve this is simply to pass the table's items list to the CustomerInformationController when you show the customerinformation.fxml file. That way the CustomerInformationController can update the table data directly. Right now you are trying to load all the data from the database again when you add a new item: that seems pretty unnecessary; all you need to do is add the new item to the list, if the database update is successful.
So you can do:
public class RetailSystemController implements Initializable {
// ...
#FXML
private void handleCustomerAddNew(ActionEvent event) {
Parent root;
try {
FXMLLoader loader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("customerinformation.fxml"));
root = loader.load();
CustomerInformationController ciController = loader.getController();
ciController.setDataList(tbl.getItems());
Stage stage = new Stage();
stage.setTitle("Customer Information");
stage.setScene(new Scene(root, 400, 340));
stage.show();
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
public void handleNewSubmit() {
// you probably don't need this method any more
}
// ...
}
And then:
public class CustomerInformationController implements Initializable {
// ...
private ObservableList<person> dataList ;
public void setDataList(ObservableList<person> dataList) {
this.dataList = dataList();
}
// ...
#FXML
private void handleSubmit(ActionEvent event) throws Exception {
RadioButton selectedBtn = (RadioButton) group.getSelectedToggle();
customer = new person(fEntry.getText(), lEntry.getText(),
aEntry.getText(), cEntry.getText(), sEntry.getValue(), zEntry.getText(),
selectedBtn.getText());
Connection conn = main.getConn();
PreparedStatement psInsert = conn.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO CUSTOMER "
+ "(FirstName, LastName, StreetAddress, City, State, Zipcode, "
+ "Gender) VALUES(?,?,?,?,?,?,?)");
psInsert.setString(1, customer.getFirstName());
psInsert.setString(2, customer.getLastName());
psInsert.setString(3, customer.getAddress());
psInsert.setString(4, customer.getCity());
psInsert.setString(5, customer.getState());
psInsert.setString(6, customer.getZipcode());
psInsert.setString(7, customer.getGender());
psInsert.executeUpdate();
// RetailSystemController retailcontroller = new RetailSystemController();
// retailcontroller.handleNewSubmit();
psInsert.close();
dataList.add(customer) ;
}
// ...
}
Obviously, in a real application, you would move the database code to a separate class, and handle exceptions appropriately, etc.
If you really do need to reload the entire list from the database again, after adding a new entry, then you can do that in the handleSubmit() method, and just use dataList.setAll(...) to replace the existing items, etc. But again, since you know what changes you just made to the database, you can just make the identical change to the table's backing list.

I am new to JavaFX. I programmed a tableview with a list of persons with their address. Everything worked fine. Then I wanted to write it in the MVC or even better the MVP Design pattern.
I am working with FXML and scenebuilder to layout the scenes.
Now with the MVC I have the problem that I get a NUllpointerException when i.e. I wanna close the confirm dialog box.
And I also can't change the labeltext for the confirmdialog window scene.
I think I know what the problem is but don't know how to solve this properly. The controller gets instantiated twice and therefore the first values of the variables form the fxml are NUll.
So this is how I wrote my little app:
MiniTest.java - my main App
package AddressBook;
import javafx.application.Application;
import javafx.fxml.FXMLLoader;
import javafx.scene.Parent;
import javafx.scene.Scene;
import javafx.stage.Stage;
public class MiniTest extends Application {
private static Stage window;
#Override
public void start(Stage primaryStage) throws Exception {
window = primaryStage;
window.setTitle("Adresslist of Clients");
Model model = new Model();
try {
FXMLLoader mainViewloader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("View.fxml"));
Parent root = (Parent) mainViewloader.load();
MainController mainController = mainViewloader.<MainController>getController();
window.setScene(new Scene(root));
window.show();
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
public static Stage getPrimaryStage() {
return window;
}
public static void main(String[] args) {
launch(args);
}
}
Model.java - this is my model, not sure if the content has to be in here. For the next step I wanna collect the data from a mysql db and save it to the db. For now I have the persons like this.
package AddressBook;
import javafx.collections.FXCollections;
import javafx.collections.ObservableList;
public class Model {
public ObservableList<Person> getPerson() {
ObservableList<Person> personList = FXCollections.observableArrayList();
Address addressPerson1 = new Address("Jaguarweg 12", "23454", "Bensheim");
Address addressPerson2 = new Address("Friedrich-Ebert-Str. 134", "82635", "Berlin");
Address addressPerson3 = new Address("Adam-Opel-Str. 1", "92364", "Bamberg");
Address addressPerson4 = new Address("Power-Shell-Pfad 21", "10083", "Hamburg");
Address addressPerson5 = new Address("Schwertstr. 76", "749236", "Stuttgart");
Address addressPerson6 = new Address("Hans-Jacob-Weg 4", "66396", "Wiesbaden");
Address addressPerson7 = new Address("Georg-Lucas-Str. 110", "53421", "Wien");
Address addressPerson8 = new Address("Andalusienweg 17", "723612", "Ostfildern");
Address addressPerson9 = new Address("Mercedes-Benz-Str. 9", "883621", "Wolfsburg");
Address addressPerson10 = new Address("Heinrich-Schwein-Str. 43", "134923", "Frankfurt");
Address addressPerson11 = new Address("Engel-Teufel-Str. 66", "083273", "Hildesheim");
personList.add(new Person("Georg Sorresto", addressPerson1));
personList.add(new Person("Flynn Bozzen", addressPerson2));
personList.add(new Person("Bill Klang", addressPerson3));
personList.add(new Person("Wilhelm Busch", addressPerson4));
personList.add(new Person("Gertrud Raven", addressPerson5));
personList.add(new Person("Markus Berg", addressPerson6));
personList.add(new Person("Juergen Schmidt", addressPerson7));
personList.add(new Person("Fritz Titz", addressPerson8));
personList.add(new Person("Bodo Bambino", addressPerson9));
personList.add(new Person("Ortrun Giner", addressPerson10));
personList.add(new Person("Jakob Huber", addressPerson11));
return personList;
}
}
Person.java - my Person class
package AddressBook;
import javafx.beans.property.SimpleStringProperty;
public class Person {
private SimpleStringProperty name;
private Address address;
public Person() {
this.name = new SimpleStringProperty("");
this.address = new Address("", "", "");
}
public Person(String name, Address address) {
this.name = new SimpleStringProperty(name);
;
this.address = address;
}
public String getName() {
return name.get();
}
public void setName(String name2) {
name.set(name2);
}
public Address getAddress() {
return address;
}
public void setAddress(Address address) {
this.address = address;
}
}
In MainController.java - for certain things like closing the window or for deleting a person I call a method like this as my own confirmdialogwindow with corresponding String for the Label.
boolean answer = confirmDialogBoxController.display("Exiting Window", "Are you sure you want to close the window?");
if (answer) {
MiniTest.getPrimaryStage().close();
}
and here is the full MainController.java - this is the mainController for the mainView(View.fxml)

I deleted now the display() method in confirmDialogBoxController.java and put it in mainController.java
...
public boolean display(String title, String message) throws IOException {
FXMLLoader confirmViewLoader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("ConfirmDialogBoxView.fxml"));
confirmViewLoader.load();
ConfirmDialogBoxController confirmDialogBoxController = confirmViewLoader.getController();
confirmDialogBoxController.getLabel().setText(message);
Parent root = confirmViewLoader.getRoot();
Stage stage = new Stage();
stage.setTitle(title);
stage.setScene(new Scene(root));
stage.initModality(Modality.APPLICATION_MODAL);
System.out.println("MessageVariable in DisplayMethod is:"+message);
stage.showAndWait();
return answer;
}
#FXML
public void closeWindow(WindowEvent e) throws IOException {
boolean answer = display("Exiting Window", "Are you sure you want to close the window?");
if (answer) {
MiniTest.getPrimaryStage().close();
}
}
...
Your confirmDialogBoxController in the main controller is null: it is never initialized. The way you have set this up is problematic: the ConfirmDialogBoxController is only initialized when the corresponding FXML is loaded (common to any FXML-controller pair), but the code for loading the FXML is in the ConfirmDialogBoxController class, so you can't load the FXML until you have a controller instance.
It's not really the responsibility of the ConfirmDialogBoxController to display the UI defined by its FXML. You should move the display() method to your MainController class:
public class MainController implements Initializable {
// Existing code omitted...
// updated close method:
#FXML
public void closeWindow(WindowEvent e) throws IOException {
boolean answer = display("Exiting Window", "Are you sure you want to close the window?");
if (answer) {
MiniTest.getPrimaryStage().close();
}
}
public boolean displayConfirmDialog(String title, String message) throws IOException {
FXMLLoader confirmViewLoader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("ConfirmDialogBoxView.fxml"));
confirmViewLoader.load();
ConfirmDialogBoxController confirmDialogBoxController = confirmViewLoader.getController();
confirmDialogBoxController.setConfirmMessage(message);
Parent root = confirmViewLoader.getRoot();
Stage stage = new Stage();
stage.setTitle(title);
stage.setScene(new Scene(root));
stage.initModality(Modality.APPLICATION_MODAL);
System.out.println("MessageVariable in DisplayMethod is:"+message);
stage.showAndWait();
// Get the user response (true = Yes button clicked) from controller:
return confirmDialogBoxController.getResponse() ;
}
}
And then update the ConfirmDialogBoxController:
public class ConfirmDialogBoxController implements Initializable {
// existing code omitted...
// This should not be static, and should be a primitive type:
// private static Boolean answer ;
private boolean answer ;
// this method removed:
/*
public boolean display(String title, String message) throws IOException {
FXMLLoader confirmViewLoader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("ConfirmDialogBoxView.fxml"));
confirmViewLoader.load();
ConfirmDialogBoxController confirmDialogBoxController = confirmViewLoader.getController();
confirmDialogBoxController.confirmLabel.setText(message);
Parent root = confirmViewLoader.getRoot();
Stage stage = new Stage();
stage.setTitle(title);
stage.setScene(new Scene(root));
stage.initModality(Modality.APPLICATION_MODAL);
System.out.println("MessageVariable in DisplayMethod is:"+message);
stage.showAndWait();
return answer;
}
*/
// This added for convenience:
public void setConfirmMessage(String message) {
confirmLabel.setText(message);
}
// This added to return the response (answer):
public boolean getResponse() {
return answer ;
}
// Note also your event handlers should be void:
#FXML
public void yesButtonClicked(ActionEvent actionEvent) {
answer = true;
stage = (Stage) yesButton.getScene().getWindow();
stage.close();
// return answer;
}
#FXML
public void noButtonClicked(ActionEvent actionEvent) {
answer = false;
Stage confirmWindow = (Stage) noButton.getScene().getWindow();
confirmWindow.close();
// return answer;
}
}
You probably want a similar refactoring for your other dialog.
I'm working on a personal weather project that contains Main.fxml, MainController.java, EnterCityDocument.fxml, and EnterCityDocumentController.java.
Main.fxml: contains a border-pane and at its center it has a ListView that displays names of cities. It also has a "Add" Button to open a new modal window(EnterCityDocument.fxml) to add a city to its ListView.
EnterCityDocument.fxml: has a listView that contains names of cities and a "Select" button to select a city the user wants to display in Main.fxml. When the user clicks the "Select" Button, the modal window (EnterCityDocument.fxml) closes and the Main.fxml continues to run.
MainController.java is the parent class of EnterCityDocumentController.java.
I've been looking for passing data from the child class(EnterCityDocumentController.java) to the parent class (MainController.java) and found a way to do it, but all of the methods i've found require to refresh the MainController.java class whenever the user selects a city in EnterCityDocumentController.java.
Is there a way to update the Main.fxml without refreshing the main scene when a new city is added into the listView of the Main.fxml?
Hope my question is clear enough. If you need a further explanation/code, please let me know!
All you need to do is arrange for the new city from the dialog to be added to the list view's backing list. Since you are using showAndWait() this is very easy: just define a method in the EnterCityDocumentController class that returns the new city, and call it after showAndWait():
public class EnterCityDocumentController {
#FXML
private TextField cityNameField ;
// other fields, etc...
#FXML
private void okButtonPressed() {
// just close the window:
cityNameField.getScene().getWindow().hide();
}
public City getUserCity() {
return new City(cityNameField.getText());
}
}
Then in the main controller:
public class MainController {
#FXML
private ListView<City> listView ;
// handler method:
#FXML
public void addNewCity() throws IOException {
FXMLLoader loader = new FXMLLoader(EnterCityDocumentController.class.getResource("EnterCityDocument.fxml"));
Scene scene = new Scene(loader.load());
Stage stage = new Stage();
stage.setScene(scene);
stage.showAndWait();
listView.getItems().add(controller.getUserCity());
}
}

Another, very slightly different approach, is to pass the listview's backing list to the second controller. Then the second controller can add the item directly to the list (and the list view will automatically update, as before). This approach can be used even if you are not using showAndWait() (it doesn't rely on the code blocking until the user dismisses the window).
package app;
import java.util.List;
import javafx.fxml.FXML;
import javafx.scene.control.TextField;
public class AddNewElementController {
#FXML
private TextField textField ;
private List<String> itemList ;
public void setItemList(List<String> itemList) {
this.itemList = itemList ;
}
#FXML
private void cancel() {
hide();
}
#FXML
private void ok() {
itemList.add(textField.getText());
hide();
}
private void hide() {
textField.getScene().getWindow().hide();
}
}
and
package app;
import java.io.IOException;
import javafx.fxml.FXML;
import javafx.fxml.FXMLLoader;
import javafx.scene.Parent;
import javafx.scene.Scene;
import javafx.scene.control.ListView;
import javafx.stage.Modality;
import javafx.stage.Stage;
public class MainController {
#FXML
private ListView<String> listView ;
#FXML
private void addNewElement() throws IOException {
FXMLLoader loader = new FXMLLoader(AddNewElementController.class.getResource("AddNewElement.fxml"));
Parent root = loader.load();
AddNewElementController controller = loader.getController();
controller.setItemList(listView.getItems());
Scene scene = new Scene(root);
Stage stage = new Stage();
stage.initModality(Modality.APPLICATION_MODAL);
stage.initOwner(listView.getScene().getWindow());
stage.setScene(scene);
stage.showAndWait();
}

i'm new to JavaFX and i want to print some BigDecimal and Bean in TableColumn in my TableView.
The issue is that i get a NullPointerExceptionexception when i try to setItems of the TableView.
Just to be clear i'm using the fxml with scenario builder for the graphic (panel, tableView, etc.) and the java class for link the bean's data to the tableView. I'm using the ObservableList for get the change, and the Bean has the correct getter that return ObjectProperty<BigDecimal> or ObjectProperty<ContoBean>.
I don't know if what i'm using for setCellValueFactory is correct, i've tryed to follow the tutorial here, but in this tutorial the TableColumn are set only as String. I've read some example for do the the setCellValueFactory, but as far as i can see the best procedure is to avoid using PropertyValueFactory and trying to stick to lambda expressions (more safe and keep the data type intact using a cellFactory, correct me if i'm wrong).
My question are:
What's the best practies for use setCellValueFactory of TableColumn with BigDecimal and Bean?
The best way is to create the TableColumns with scenario builder and link them with the controller or create only the TableView, in scenario builder, and create each single TableColumn in the java controller?
If i'm using a Bean that contains other Beans, how the TableColumn will represent the information? Which variable will be used for view the information, all of the Bean's variable or only a single one?

I am trying to re-create the table view sample using scene builder 2, but my TableView couldn’t be populated.

}
Screenshot:
When I run it, there are empty rows in the table. If I type some values in the 3 TextFields and click the button, still the values are not inserted in the table.
Can you please find what's wrong with the code? Also, on an unrelated note, how can I make the table scrollable?
You haven't set any cellValueFactorys on your TableColumns (Example 12-5 in the tutorial you linked).
You can do this in FXML with
<TableColumn fx:id="firstNameCol" prefWidth="75.0" text="First Name" >
<cellValueFactory><PropertyValueFactory property="firstName"/></cellValueFactory>
</TableColumn>
or in the controller with
firstNameCol.setCellValueFactory(new PropertyValueFactory("firstName"));
(and similarly for the other columns)
You've actually made two mistakes.
First of all, you're trying to assign the datamodel to the TableView using getItems().setAll(). Take a look at the documentation of setAll(). It copies all the values of the given list into the ObservableList. This is not what you want, you want the TableView to start observing data and responding to changes. The way to do this is to assign a reference directly, through setItems(data).
Take a look at the code examples in the documentation of TableView. You forgot to connect the various StringProperties in Person up to the columns. This is the way they do it:
firstNameCol.setCellValueFactory(new PropertyValueFactory<Person, String>("firstName"));
lastNameCol.setCellValueFactory(new PropertyValueFactory<Person, String>("lastName"));
Lastly, I've got a little sidenote. Note that this is NOT the cause of your specific issue.
I see you're using raw types. This is generally considered a bad thing, and you're probably getting some warnings from the compiler about it. You can solve the issue by stating the generic types your objects use. Notice in the above code sample, I state for the PropertyValueFactories that the type of class contained within the TableView.items is Person and that the type of object displayed in the rows is String.
As for scrolling, which you also asked for, it does that automatically once there are enough lines in the TableView.
IN handle Mouse Button you can write:
/setItems();
