CSS Variable loading svg file multiple times - css

I am using variables in CSS/SCSS. I want to set a background (using an SVG file), but it is re-loading every time I navigate or perform some other action.
My -Variables.scss file:

--backgroundTheme: url('triangle-dark.svg') no-repeat;
}
$variables: (
--backgroundTheme: var(--backgroundTheme)
);
My styles.scss file:
#import "~assets/_variable";

background-size: cover;

How can I avoid multiple times loading of this file?
PS: This is an Angular 8 project.

I had the same problem recently. It was caused by the inspector - "Disable cache" was enabled:
You just need to uncheck it and it will stop making new requests.

To use the image multiple times in the DOM with only one request from the CSS you should use the content property of your pseudo element target to render the image:
body::before {
content: var(--backgroundTheme, 'alt text');
}
Although you'll probably need another approach in handling the image. It might not work for you.

I have two possible idea, not sure if they works for you but it's an easy check:
If you can, don't use css variables, use scss instead. My general approach is to have a settings.scss file and import it whenever needed in the other files. It's a personal preference, I find it easier to manage like that.
It could as well be something wrong in the backend, are the caching headers set right? You can check that in Chrome itself, by clicking on tringle-dark.svg, Headers tab, then Response Headers.

How to include files depending on the request.domain

I need to include the file
"#{request.domain.split(".").first}.css.scss"
into my custom.css.scss file.
I don't know how to proceed. The goal is to declare specific variable, and give them different values in each file, loading dynamically different files for each different request
file one.css.scss

file two.css.scss
$button_primary_color: #zzz;

I also tried using CSS3 variables, without success:

(it doesn't behave standard in the different browser), and also it doesn't substitute the following statement.

I'd like to have a more bootstrap/sass solution. How can I accomplish this?
I'm still trying to figure out a best method, but one thing I've done in the past is to set the config.assets.precompile to effectively have domain specific css files and then have your layout generate the appropriate code to pull in that specific css file.
config.assets.precompile += %w( application.js application.css domain1.css domain2.css)
where you have in your asset pipeline
domain1.css pulling in whatever domain specific code you need.
much cleaner than trying to include logic switches within the css code (which you cannot do btw afaik).

Referencing paths from a css element to another file

I'd like to be able to put all of my paths in one file ("property file"), so whenever I refernce them , the provided functionality should imiplement:

I'm aware, as a server-side developer (mostly), that the mechanism of the processing of the browser is different from a compiler, and yet, I want to be able to achieve the property file functionality ( "propObject.getProperty(key)").
I'm not using Saas or SCSS, nor CSS variables.
Thought of making another CSS file with an element and referencing to it, but have no idea how to.
I think the only way is either to use SAAS/SCSS or parsing the css file on your server and look for any variables which need to be replaced with a value from your property.

Fancybox: Overriding CSS

How do I override the css of a fancybox?
I'm building a website that uses fancybox on two different pages, and I want to override the fancybox css on one of these pages so the arrows are pushed outside of the box.
IE I would like to impart these properties on the fancybox:

.fancybox-next {
right: -80px;
}
I can't figure out how to accomplish this and solutions to other relevant stackoverflow problems don't work. I'm sure there's a simple way to do it.
Can anybody help me out?

You have to remember about hirarchy of the CSS. Inline CSS are the most important ones, external CSS will be read second.
When it comes to the latter, they are read from the top of your CSS file. So writing the style, which you want to use to override a previous one, below, should do the work just fine.
Secondly, you can always use jQuery to do that. ShaggyInjun gave a good example. You should be able to do that by using $(selector).css();.

Basically, you have to set a CSS inline declaration AFTER you have loaded the fancybox css file in order to override those properties.

Is it possible to remove a filter from a CSS file on an overriden CSS file?

I have a CSS File that contains a rule like this:
.someElement {
filter:gray(enabled=true) alpha(opacity=50);
-ms-filter:"gray(enabled=true) alpha(opacity=50)"
}
This rule causes some issues and I would like to remove it. However, making changes to that CSS File is annoying to say the least, and the ideal situation would be to create a secondary CSS file that overrides/removes that rule.
I assume this isn't possible? (without JavaScript or so)
Just add this to your new CSS file and make sure it gets loaded AFTER the original one.

Depends on the context.
you can create inline css and override it.
or you can create a second css file to override and call it after the first.

How can I define colors as variables in CSS?

I’m working on a CSS file that is quite long. I know that the client could ask for changes to the color scheme, and was wondering: is it possible to assign colors to variables, so that I can just change a variable to have the new color applied to all elements that use it?
Please note that I can’t use PHP to dynamically change the CSS file.
CSS supports this natively with CSS Variables.
Example CSS file

--main-color:#06c;

color: var(--main-color);

For a working example, please see this JSFiddle (the example shows one of the CSS selectors in the fiddle has the color hard coded to blue, the other CSS selector uses CSS variables, both original and current syntax, to set the color to blue).

People keep upvoting my answer, but it's a terrible solution compared to the joy of sass or less, particularly given the number of easy to use gui's for both these days. If you have any sense ignore everything I suggest below.
You could put a comment in the css before each colour in order to serve as a sort of variable, which you can change the value of using find/replace, so...
At the top of the css file

The good news is you can change it using JavaScript access, which will change globally as well...
But how to declare them...
It's quite simple:
For example, you wanna assign a #ff0000 to a var(), just simply assign it in :root, also pay attention to --:

--red: #ff0000;

background-color: var(--red);

The good things are the browser support is not bad, also don't need to be compiled to be used in the browser like LESS or SASS...
Also, here is a simple JavaScript script, which changes the red value to blue:

CSS itself doesn't use variables. However, you can use another language like SASS to define your styling using variables, and automatically produce CSS files, which you can then put up on the web. Note that you would have to re-run the generator every time you made a change to your CSS, but that isn't so hard.
You can try CSS3 variables:

--fontColor: red;
color: var(--fontColor);

There's no easy CSS only solution. You could do this:
Find all instances of background-color and color in your CSS file and create a class name for each unique color.
.top-header { color: #fff; }
.content-text { color: #f00; }
.bg-leftnav { background-color: #fff; }
.bg-column { background-color: #f00; }
Next go through every single page on your site where color was involved and add the appropriate classes for both color and background color.
Last, remove any references of colors in your CSS other than your newly created color classes.

Yes, in near future (i write this in june 2012) you can define native css variables, without using less/sass etc ! The Webkit engine just implemented first css variable rules, so cutting edge versions of Chrome and Safari are already to work with them. See the Official Webkit (Chrome/Safari) development log with a onsite css browser demo.
Hopefully we can expect widespread browser support of native css variables in the next few months.
Do not use css3 variables due to support.
I would do the following if you want a pure css solution.
Use color classes with semenatic names.
.bg-primary { background: #880000; }

Separate the structure from the skin (OOCSS)

Put these inside a separate css file to change as needed.
Sure can, sort of, thanks to the wonderful world of multiple classes, can do this:

but I often end up combining them anyway like this:
.highlight {color:red, background-color: black}
I know the semantic police will be all over you, but it works.
I'm not clear on why you can't use PHP. You could then simply add and use variables as you wish, save the file as a PHP file and link to that .php file as the style sheet instead of the .css file.
It doesn't have to be PHP, but you get what I mean.
When we want programming stuff, why not use a programming language until CSS (maybe) supports things like variables?

You can group selectors:

You could pass the CSS through javascript and replace all instances of COLOUR1 with a certain color (basically regex it) and provide a backup stylesheet incase the end user has JS turned off
dicejs.com (formally cssobjs) is a client-side version of SASS. You can set variables in your CSS (stored in json formatted CSS) and re-use your color variables.

Consider using SCSS. It's full compatible with CSS syntax, so a valid CSS file is also a valid SCSS file. This makes migration easy, just change the suffix. It has numerous enhancements, the most useful being variables and nested selectors.
You need to run it through a pre-processor to convert it to CSS before shipping it to the client.
I've been a hardcore CSS developer for many years now, but since forcing myself to do a project in SCSS, I now won't use anything else.

Not PHP I'm afraid, but Zope and Plone use something similar to SASS called DTML to achieve this. It's incredibly useful in CMS's.
Upfront Systems has a good example of its use in Plone.
If you write the css file as an xsl template, you could read color values from a simple xml file. Then create the css with an xslt processor.

It’s not possible with CSS alone.
You can do it with JavaScript and LESS using less.js, which will render LESS variables into CSS live, but it’s for development only and adds too much overhead for real-life use.
The closest you can come with CSS is to use an attribute substring selector like this:
[id*="colvar-"] {
color: #f0c69b;
}
and set the ids of all your elements that you want to be adjusted to names starting with colvar-, such as colvar-header. Then when you change the color, all the ID styles are updated. That’s as close as you can get with CSS alone.
