I just migrated my Drupal 8 site from an Apache server to Nginx.
I applied the configuration below :

I do not understand what this block is for. Should I enter the IP address of my server instead of this one ?

The rule will only be useful if you have .txt or .log files in a directory accessible through the web server.
If that is the case, for security reasons, you should list all ip addresses that can access those files. All other addresses will be banned.
However, it is very unlikely that you want to serve log files via http, so you could just deny all.

I am managing a subdomain using nginx conf files. I am able to get a working subdomain up, and deny access to it (resulting in 403) by including deny all;. However, when I try to add allow 1.2.3.4; (not posting my real IP address) right above it (this is where I understand you have to put it to allow access to your own IP address), I am still getting 403 when I try to access the subdomain on my browser (in firefox private mode). I got my IP address through https://www.whatismyip.com/, and I am using the one given under "My Public IPv4 is: ". Is this the correct IP address I should be using? If not how should I go about finding the right IP address to allow?
Maybe this will help if you want to access your resource via nginx locally. You should put it in the root block of a subdomain.

I am hosting an app (Kibana) on port 5601. I want to restrict access to it by whitelisting IPs, so I am trying to host it behind Nginx. Below is my Nginx conf.

It works as only I can access the app on port 5700 and everyone else gets a 403. However, others can directly goto localhost:5601 and bypass the whole security. How do I stop direct access to port 5601?
localhost:5601 is a connection only accessible to users/processes running on the same host that is running Nginx & Kibana. It needs to be there so that Nginx can proxy_pass traffic to Kibana.
However, I think you are talking about external users also connecting to port 5601 from remote systems.
Kibana does not need to listen to traffic from external systems on port 5601. Note that by default at least some Kibana installs do not listen to external systems and you may not need to make any changes.
However to be sure:
Edit your kibana.yml file (possibly /etc/kibana/kibana.yml)
Ensure that server.host: "localhost" is the only server.host line and is not commented out
Restart Kibana
To further manage your system using best practices. I would strongly recommend operating some form of firewall and only opening access to ports and protocols which you expect external users to need.
I have a local network, on which there are some old insecure services. I use nginx reverse proxy with client certificates authentication as safe entrypoint to this local network from the Internet. Till now I used it only to proxy HTTP servers using

and everything works fine.
But now I would like to serve static files, that are accessible through FTP on a local server, I tried simply:

proxy_pass ftp://user:password#192.168.100.200:5000/;
}
but that doesn't work, and I could not find anything that would simply proxy HTTP request to FTP request.
Is there any way to do this?
Nginx doesn't support proxying to FTP servers. At best, you can proxy the socket... and this is a real hassle with regular old FTP due to it opening new connections on random ports every time a file is requested.
What you can probably do instead is create a FUSE mount to that FTP server on some local path, and serve that path with Nginx like normal. To that end, CurlFtpFS is one tool for this. Tutorial: https://linuxconfig.org/mount-remote-ftp-directory-host-locally-into-linux-filesystem
(Note: For security and reliability, it's strongly recommended you migrate away from FTP when possible. Consider SSH/SFTP instead.)
I have a route in a web server which needs to fetch a file from remote server and then process the content.
I want nginx to proxy this fetch action so that I can take the advantages of cache and performance.
At first I think I can use x-accel-redirect, but as I need to process the content, I think I cannot.
Second I think I can just create a proxy_pass route for this purpose, but I also need to restrict this route to be accessed only from my web server.
What is the best practice? Adding allow 127.0.0.1 in this route?
The internal directive will restrict the route in this manner, allow 127.0.0.1; deny all; will have the same effect.
If you are intending to process the content within Nginx eg with the subs filter module then dont forget to disable gzip for this location
We're having a setup where our server, running a symfony2 application, is inside the client's network.
Is there a way to allow only the /api* path to be accessed from an external network (=the internet).
I'm assuming the best approach is by configuring nginx but i can only find blocking all or no url.
