RS 232 issue in ATEasy - serial-port

I am using ATEasy 7 142g in Windows 7.
I have a ZUP power supply module that I am communicating with RS232.
The weird thing is, that if I open HyperTerminal and send the device commands and try to receive result - all works fine.
BUT when I send the same commands in ATEasy and try to read results (and VERIFICATED it using the "monitor" feature), the zap module starts to send endless jibrish until I restart it (unplug it).
All the channel configurations are the same (baud rate etc...).
The set of commands that work in HyperTerminal but not in ATEasy:
:ADR01;
:RMT1;
:RMT?;
The result in case of HyperTerminal is :RM1;
In case of ATEasy the result is just jibrish until device restart.
What can be the reason?

In the end, the problem was entirly something else:
Noise from a motor cable was injected into the ZUP communication cable.
So everytime the motor was activated - the ZUP module com channel went crazy!

Flashed the ESP-01S to new firmware, now can't send any AT commands

I've have been trying to flash the ESP-01S to the 1.5.1 from the official website. I am also using their own flash tool. The tool detects the component and completes the update all the time, this is what it detects:

Now when I try connect everything up with my arduino and try some AT commands through the serial port, nothing happens. When the ESP is first switched on it spits out the normal gibberish however, it now doesn't say "READY" and every time i send an AT command it sends no reply.
I can still reflash the device but, no matter what I try no AT command work.

Serial Port not working on Surface Book

I have a Microsoft Surface Book that I've dual booted Linux Mint on. I'm writing a program that needs to read in data from a serial port, but my serial ports don't seem to be working. The behavior is consistent across Mint and Windows (Testing done through Cygwin). It gets a bit of data the first 2-5 seconds that the device is plugged in (viewing the data through screen, same thing happens if I just use pyserial to print data incoming from serial port), then nothing.
What could be happening? I think I've isolated the problem to the serial ports - the Surface Book has 2 USB ports and the same thing happens on both of them, and I've tested the hardware that I'm plugging into it on 2 other computers (One Linux and one Mac OS), and it works fine on both of those.
Your MS Surface, seemingly, has a yellow triangle exclamation mark icon (over the adapter icon) without any driver to install/download. And properties in the device status box window say This device cannot start. (Code 10) or A device which does not exist was specified. Right?
If it's so you should wait for an update from MS. It's notorious problem.
I ended up getting the computer replaced on warranty for an unrelated issue months later, and what do you know, on the new computer the serial ports work fine. That indicates to me some sort of hardware problem, given that the issue persisted across OS's.

the point is to open port properly you need to open a file, not a port. not with usual c - assembly write to port code.
another option you are using an unintentionally bought fake USB to serial cable with a Fake PL2303 chip
then you need to install the old version of the driver.
search in google:

another option is maybe it conserves energy and closes the port because it feels it is unused.
in windows> device manager,> properties of a device - usually USB root hub > power management - allow the computer to turn off this device to save power - uncheck it.

also, you could look in windows events - to see what happens. usually, failures like this are registered in the events log.
an unlikely option is it consumes too much current, like a short circuit. and the device protection circuit shuts the chip off. also probably it does not have such circuit. one possibility is to try with an external powered hub.

I was experiencing the same problem - came across the solution on another site. The USB 3 ports on Surface Book aren't compatible with something or other to do with Com Port but running the device through a cheap USB hub solved my problem straight away and it was instantly recognised by the Arduino IDE

HM10 BLE 4.0 Send AT Commands instead of passing through serial

When I send any commands to the HM10 BLE Bluetooth module, it sends the commands through bluetooth instead of the HM10 module processing the command. For example, I expected to send AT and have the module respond with "OK", but it sends the text "AT" through the bluetooth connection. I have tried sending the command with no bluetooth connection and the same thing happens. I have also tried sending the command via bluetooth instead of the serial connected to the device and I get the same thing.
When HM10 is connected to remote ble device it is in transparent mode. To put it into AT mode you need break connection or not establish it at all.
For breaking connection use reset/break pins. Reset is 12 pin and Break seems to be 23 pin.
It has sense to look IMME parameter of the module (page 32 of datasheet).
IMME Query/Set Module work type
1: When module is powered on, only respond the AT Command, don’t do
anything. Until AT + START, AT+CON, AT+CONNL commands is received.
0: When power on, module will start work immediately Default: 0
Also be carefull with strings endings, usually string doesn't need to be terminated with any symbol at all: AT, but some H11 need the string to end with CRLF: AT\r\n
Maybe (Maybe) your problem because of using clone module, try this solution with upload genuine firmware to your hm-10.

I had problem close from your problem but for me no matter what I send I don't receive anything even to connected device, but after I upload that firmware, and change Module work mode to 1 (AT+MODE1) become able to send command even from connected device.

Arduino com port keeps getting busy

I have got an Arduino Uno R3 on which I have an accelerometer that I'm playing a bit with. This setup has worked for quite a while now, everything working from uploading to checking the serial output.
Today I started having problems with the com port reporting busy or not connected at all. When I use the default IDE it cant find the arduino at all but when I use a modded IDE (Arduino ERW 1.0.5) seems to find the port to communicate on but it reports it being busy.
I have reinstalled the driver like 5 or 6 times now and searched for any other driver that might work but they wont change anything. I have also checked that my pc actually detects the arduino which it does, it is listed among the COM ports on Device Manager. I also tried changing the Com port from COM3 to COM4 and still it worked for like 3 uploads and then the COM port kinda "disappeared" from the serial port list on the IDE.
EDIT: Weirdly, after closing some programs that seem to have to do with serial communication it works. I have to look into what I close and when.
EDIT2: For now it seems that processing sometimes didnt close properly when not using the stop button on the processing application which then didnt close the connection to the arduino. I havent had any problems since I started to use the Stop button on processing.

One thing I noticed is that if I press the reset button when it starts again it wont send anything through serial, is it defaulting to the Blink program after a reset or what?
For those getting the "port busy" error while connecting Arduino and Process, one fix is to close the serial monitor in Arduino.
For anyone who is struggling with this, you have to give again rw rights to ttyACM0
sudo chmod a+rw /dev/ttyACM0
after that I was able to open the serial port.
I found the problem being in Processing itself, on win 8.1 the P3D option for 3D renderer seems to leave the java process open after closure which causes the serial port to be busy even after the main window is closed.
I simply fixed it by using OPENGL instead of P3D which didn't change anything visibly so I'm fine with it.

Check if serial port is listening

I have an Arduino sending and receiving instructions with a Python script via a serial port.
The Arduino takes a button state and when it is pushed, it will send a message via the serial port to a Python script and await a response. (via Serial.available()). It works well enough.
However, if the Python script has crashed for whatever reason (ideally it will run in the background, so it can't be easily checked), the Arduino will wait forever and will be unavailable even on a script restart.
Is there a way for my Arduino to check if there is something listening on the serial port? (and alert me with flashing lights, etc. if not) or is this not how serial works? Worst case I guess I could use a timeout, although that is not ideal.
You have a limited ability to detect if there is something listening on the other side by using the DSR/DTR pins.
When you open the serial port on the machine your scripts runs on, it should raise its DTR pin (or you should be able to convince it to do so: the documentation of the library you use to drive the COM port should tell you how).
Then, on your Arduino, you can check its DSR pin (assuming null-modem wiring with handshaking, where the PC DTR pin is wired to DSR+CD on the Arduino) at regular intervals, and handle the 'nobody connected' scenario in any way you see fit.
One problem with this approach is that your PC script may not close the serial port when it crashes/stops responding, leaving the DTR pin enabled as if everything is still OK. Also, your script may simply miss the message from the Arduino due to errors on the serial line.
For that reason, you should always implement a timeout in your receive routines: even if there is a party listening at the other end, there is no guarantee it has received your message (or that its response will reach you intact).
Re-sending the message at least once (assuming DSR is raised) if a timeout occurs makes your protocol more reliable.
The Arduino doesn't use the DSR line or any other handshaking line, so you can't do what you suggest.
I agree with mdb that timeouts are necessary, but would also add that you might want to implement simple challenge/response system that periodically checks if anyone is listening. (I like ircd's Ping-Pong analogy).
