I am trying to repair a WordPress installation. I almost have it running now, but there is a strange issue.
In the admin dashboard there is an option in the upper menu to open the site, Visit Site.
When clicking this menu option, the browser opens another folder from the server, not the folder where WordPress is installed.
I have tried several options to solve the issue:
Adding
define('WP_HOME','https://yourdomain.com');
define('WP_SITEURL','https://yourdomain.com');
at the end of wp-config.php file. Of course changin yourdomain.com for the current domain.
Checking the database entries for siteurl and home in options table.
Checking inside Settings->General settings for WordPress Address and Site Address
Is there another way to get the reason for the issue?
I think there are a few other factors you are missing to mention in your question. I would add checking the server setup for that domain. Is it cPanel or Plesk? Take a look at what the domain is supposed to be vs what path is WP installed.
Other possibilities might be:
Server's cache
Your .htaccess file
Permalinks (disable and enable)

I am a WordPress beginner and in the dashboard, under Settings --> General I changed WordPress address (URL) to http://a.com and Site Address (URL) also to http://a.com just in the curiosity to try the feature unknowing of the fact that it will lock me out.
I am using xampp for a localhost environment.
The canonical article to resolve this problem is on the WordPress website.
If you have a local copy of the website, you can edit your wp-config.php file and upload it to the site. Or, if you have SSH access to your site you can use a curses-based text editor such as Nano to make the necessary amendments remotely.
You need to override the domain settings you have made, and you can do so using this code:
define('WP_HOME','http://example.com');
define('WP_SITEURL','http://example.com');
Upload this file if necessary, and then refresh your admin screen. You may have to log in again. Once you get access to your control panel, fix your incorrect settings. You can then revert the changes to your wp-config.php file.
I have successfully moved a wordpress site from /test directory to the root, so now the website url looks like www.example.com. Fine.
However the admin section (wp-admin) still points to /test directory and so the url looks like www.example.com/test/wp-admin/...
How can I make it like www.example.com/wp-admin/...?
Please notice that I'm not interested in a simple redirection (now the customer is able to access the admin section with www.example.com/wp-admin, but then he's redirected to www.example.com/test/wp-admin/..., and it's not what he wants.

You may need to change many URLs in post/page content; if so, see https://github.com/interconnectit/Search-Replace-DB as suggested in the above Docs.
There is no need to create a new Wordpress install.
Also see http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory#Using_a_pre-existing_subdirectory_install if you want to keep core Wordpress files and folders in a subfolder, but have the site appear to be at root for the end user.
You should not move wordpress this way. Here is what you do:
Install Clean Wordpress Installation on the new domain.
(www.original.com)
Use a plugin* to make back-up on your test domain.
(www.original.com/test/)
Install plugin* on the new domain, and restore back-up from test
domain. (www.orignal.com)
Update your style.css, header.php, index.php & footer.php if it
contains hard written links to your test domain.
You cannot simply move a wordpress installation - as most entries, links etc. are stored in the database. If you move folders in your ftp they will still point to the old database. This is why you have to duplicate your site, where the database entries will be automatically updated to your new site domain. Hard written links in any theme php files will have to be updated.
Although your problem depends on how your pointers/sites are set-up in c-panel. If you have to change pointers for your directory, you might have to back-up your website and upload it to a different domain so your new site can access the restoration back-up file via http request.
*Plugins such as wp clone, duplicator.
I have just moved my testing development subdirectory worpdress installation to my root folder using the WP-Clone plugin.
The problem now is my main site (previously mysite.com ) shows (mysite.com/site) now. and the subdirectory is shwoing in all my links
I have tried going to settings and removed the /site from wordpress URL and Site address URL.
But it broke my site and disabled me from accessing my wp-login.php .
I fixed it by editing my wp-config.php and adding :
define('WP_HOME','https://mysite.com/site');
define('WP_SITEURL','https://mysite.com/site');
and now my website works perfectly. But it still shows mysite.com/site and i am unable to edit my URL and Siteaddress from my wp dashboard anymore.
How do I Remove my website subdirectory (/site) and still have it work and not break my site's themes and all? How do I go about this? Really really appreciate any help! Thanks!
By adding those constants to wp-config.php you're overruling any setting in the database. That's why you can't edit them in the admin panel.
So the first step is to change those constants to:
define('WP_HOME','https://domain.com');
define('WP_SITEURL','https://domain.com');
Then delete your htaccess file. (.htaccess in your root folder).
Once you've done this navigate to http://domain.com/wp-login.php
Login to your site and go to Settings -> Permalinks. Hit save which will regenerate your htaccess file.
Finally you'll need to update existing links. I'd suggest installing a plugin called 'Velvet Blues Update URLs'.
In wordpress, how can I change where the links are pointing to without changing the server name or adding redirection?
My main site is a rails app at www.example.com.
I have the wordpress blog on a separate server at blog.example.com/blog
I have a reverse proxy on the primary (rails) server that takes any url that ends in /blog/ and then serves up the blog content. (That's all behind the scenes -- the user never sees the blog.example.com domain)
Currently, I can access the blog via the reverse proxy at www.example.com/blog, but the problem is that the urls on the blog point to blog.example.com/blog (wrong) instead of www.example.com/blog (right).
I've tried changing the urls in wp-config.php, but whenever I change those it breaks something.
I eventually figured it out. Here's what I did.
1) Got rid of the Bitnami wordpress image (on Amazon) and reinstalled wordpress fresh, from scratch, on EC2. Bitnami had a bunch of magic behind the scenes that was making it hard for me to figure out what was going on.
2) Via wordpress admin changed Site Address (URL) from http://blog.example.com/blog to http://www.example.com/blog Previously, I had been changing this in the wp-config.php file, but I am pretty sure that doesn't do the same thing. So I needed to change it in wordpress admin. However I needed to keep the Wordpress Address the same. Found out that the Site Address governs the urls displayed in the theme, whereas the Wordpress Address is the server hostname. I'm using a reverse proxy which is why this was confusing.
3) To enable pretty permalinks behind the reverse proxy I changed the permalink settings in wordpress admin, then I updated .htaccess according to its instructions, then I modified /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default changing AllowOverride None to AllowOverride All. Need to do this to enable mod_rewrite to work on virtual hosts.
Go to wp-admin - settings, and change site url. Than flush permalinks by resaving settings.

Then you need to likely change the two fields mentioned earlier siteaddress and wordpressaddress via the database. Find the table in your database wp_options or yourtableprefix_options and edit the fields option_value where the option_name is siteurl and home to have the address

Also if you are just starting using a webserver. You may need to make sure your files are writable by the webserver.
Our company is trying to transition to WordPress Multisite but we have several issues working against us at the moment. We host WP outside our server environment (we use Amazon for our WP sites) so we actually have to use an URL proxy to our Amazon servers. The other issue is that we needed to install Multisite in the root of the folder so the domain is http://100.10.20.30/foldername but we can't proxy that to http://www.domain.com/foldername because that is a live site that we're not moving to WP any time soon. So, of course, the problem we're running in to is that the IP is showing up not only in the source code but in Google now as well (which we don't want).
Does anyone know of anything we can do to keep the IP out of the source code/Google? I was thinking about rewrite rules in the htaccess file but didn't want to do anything until I had some better ideas.
Also, I can't use the domain mapping plugin that everyone seems to suggest for this type of issue because our sites aren't hosted in the root of our server (a prerequisite for the plugin).
So to break it down, this is what we need:
Multisite Parent Blog <-- This has to be the IP address
Multisite child blogs <-- Domain name but when we set the actual proxied domain name in the settings we get a 404 error because it's not looking in the right place. It's looking for an actual folder on our internal servers.

Found the solution myself. Posted below:
In the Multisite dashboard, click on "All Sites" then administer the specific site.
Under the "Path" field, you'll need to deselect the "Update siteurl and home as well."
Save changes.
Click on "Settings" tab.
Change the URL in the following fields: "SiteURL" and "Home"
Save changes.
When all is said and done, the IP is showing in the "Info" tab but it changes the URL in the source code to your domain.
