Is the property text-align: center; a good way to center an image using CSS?

That will not work as the text-align property applies to block containers, not inline elements, and img is an inline element. See the W3C specification.
Use this instead:

Actually, the only problem with your code is that the text-align attribute applies to text (yes, images count as text) inside of the tag. You would want to put a span tag around the image and set its style to text-align: center, as so:
span.centerImage {
text-align: center;

The image will be centered. In response to your question, it is the easiest and most foolproof way to center images, as long as you remember to apply the rule to the image's containing span (or div).

You can do:
<center><img src="..." /></center>

There are three methods for centering an element that I can suggest:
Using the text-align property

The first and second methods only work if the parent is at least as wide as the image. When the image is wider than its parent, the image will not stay centered!!!
But:
The third method is a good way for that!
Here's an example:

On the container holding image you can use a CSS 3 Flexbox to perfectly center the image inside, both vertically and horizontally.
Let's assume you have <div class="container"> as the image holder:
Then as CSS you have to use:

And this will make all your content inside this div perfectly centered.

Only if you need to support ancient versions of Internet Explorer.
The modern approach is to do margin: 0 auto in your CSS.

The only issue here is that the width of the paragraph must be the same as the width of the image. If you don't put a width on the paragraph, it will not work, because it will assume 100% and your image will be aligned left, unless of course you use text-align:center.
Try out the fiddle and experiment with it if you like.

If you are using a class with an image then the following will do

If it is only an image in a specific class that you want to center align then following will do:

The simplest solution I found was to add this to my img-element:

It seems I don't need to add "0" before the "auto" as suggested by others. Maybe that is the proper way, but it works well enough for my purposes without the "0" as well. At least on latest Firefox, Chrome, and Edge.

Try this one on parent properties:
text-align:center

You can use text-align: center on the parent and change the img to display: inline-block → it therefore behaves like a text-element and is will be centered if the parent has a width!

To center a non background image depends on whether you want to display the image as an inline (default behavior) or a block element.
Case of inline
If you want to keep the default behavior of the image's display CSS property, you will need to wrap your image inside another block element to which you must set text-align: center;
Case of block
If you want to consider the image as a block element of its own, then text-align property does not make a sens, and you should do this instead:

margin-right: auto;

Yes, if the image is the only element inside its wrapper.
No, in case you have other elements inside the image's wrapper because all the children elements which are siblings of the image will inherit the text-align property: and may be you would not like this side effect.

Make sure the parent element is positioned, i.e., relative, fixed, absolute, or sticky.
If you don't know the width of your div, you can use transform:translateX(-50%); instead of the negative margin.
With CSS calc(), the code can get even simpler:

The principle is still the same; put the item in the middle and compensate for the width.
I've created this example to show how to vertically and horizontally align.

Set the width and set margin-left and margin-right to auto. That's for horizontal only, though. If you want both ways, you'd just do it both ways. Don't be afraid to experiment; it's not like you'll break anything.
It cannot be centered if you don't give it a width. Otherwise, it will take, by default, the whole horizontal space.

I recently had to center a "hidden" div (i.e., display:none;) that had a tabled form within it that needed to be centered on the page. I wrote the following jQuery code to display the hidden div and then update the CSS content to the automatic generated width of the table and change the margin to center it. (The display toggle is triggered by clicking on a link, but this code wasn't necessary to display.)

Another solution for this without having to set a width for one of the elements is using the CSS 3 transform attribute.

The trick is that translateX(-50%) sets the #inner element 50 percent to the left of its own width. You can use the same trick for vertical alignment.

Of course, you don't have to set the width to 50%. Any width less than the containing <div> will work. The margin: 0 auto is what does the actual centering.
If you are targeting Internet Explorer 8 (and later), it might be better to have this instead:

It will make the inner element center horizontally and it works without setting a specific width.

Make sure the parent element is positioned, i.e., relative, fixed, absolute, or sticky.
If you don't know the width of your div, you can use transform:translateX(-50%); instead of the negative margin.
With CSS calc(), the code can get even simpler:

The principle is still the same; put the item in the middle and compensate for the width.
I've created this example to show how to vertically and horizontally align.

Set the width and set margin-left and margin-right to auto. That's for horizontal only, though. If you want both ways, you'd just do it both ways. Don't be afraid to experiment; it's not like you'll break anything.
It cannot be centered if you don't give it a width. Otherwise, it will take, by default, the whole horizontal space.
CSS 3's box-align property

I recently had to center a "hidden" div (i.e., display:none;) that had a tabled form within it that needed to be centered on the page. I wrote the following jQuery code to display the hidden div and then update the CSS content to the automatic generated width of the table and change the margin to center it. (The display toggle is triggered by clicking on a link, but this code wasn't necessary to display.)
NOTE: I'm sharing this code, because Google brought me to this Stack Overflow solution and everything would have worked except that hidden elements don't have any width and can't be resized/centered until after they are displayed.

Another solution for this without having to set a width for one of the elements is using the CSS 3 transform attribute.

The trick is that translateX(-50%) sets the #inner element 50 percent to the left of its own width. You can use the same trick for vertical alignment.

Chris Coyier who wrote an excellent post on 'Centering in the Unknown' on his blog. It's a roundup of multiple solutions. I posted one that isn't posted in this question. It has more browser support than the Flexbox solution, and you're not using display: table; which could break other things.

Make .center-helper an inline block; it becomes the same size as .inner making it 300 pixels wide.
Push .center-helper 50% right relative to its parent; this places its left at 500 pixels wrt. outer.
Push .inner 50% left relative to its parent; this places its left at -150 pixels wrt. center helper which means its left is at 500 - 150 = 350 pixels wrt. outer.
Set overflow on .outer to hidden to prevent horizontal scrollbar.

Difficulty Centering Pictures

I am having problems centering two pictures on a page:

There could be a few reasons why your elements didn't center. First try adding margin: 0px auto to your element.
For margin: 0 auto; to work, an element needs to have a set width like width: 100px;.
If the element has a set width and still does't center, try display: block;.
Those two things will always work.
How to center elements without margin: 0 auto;:
If you're just trying to center all elements inside the body tag, just use text-align: center; on the body tag to accomplish that.
That said, I don't think you were trying to do that though.
make your A tags display to block and set margin to 0px auto;
it will justify the elements

Center an auto-width div?

I'm having trouble because I have a div I want to center and what I have
usually been told to do is this:

the trouble is, this is for if you want the div to be a fixed width. I want the div
to adjust its size based on the text in the div, and still be centered. I tried:

but this didn't work. It stretches the div to fill up the screen when I do this.

If you want your element width to be 'auto' based on the contents within it AND centered within its parent BUT with the contents inside the CHILD element left-aligned, do the following (because it really is the simplest way):

Centering an element horizontally can get a little weird, as the functionality isn't very intuitive. Really, you need to play games with text-align:center; and margin:auto, and you'll need to know when to use which.
For example, if I want to center the contents of an element (raw-text), including buttons and inputs, I can use text-align:center.

How can I horizontally align my divs?

having margin: 0 auto; along with width: 100% is useless because you element will take the full space.
float: left will float the elements to the left, until there is no space left, thus they will go on a new line. Use display: inline-block to be able to display elements inline, but with the ability to provide size (as opposed to display: inline where width/height are ignored)
Alignments in CSS had been a nightmare. Luckily, a new standard is introduced by W3C in 2009: Flexible Box. There is a good tutorial about it here. Personally I find it much more logical and easier to understand than other methods.

Although not covering this question (because you want to align the <div>s inside the container) but directly related: if you wanted to align just one div horizontally you could do this:

If elements are to be displayed in one line and IE 6/7 do not matter, consider using display: table and display: table-cell instead of float.
inline-block leads to horizontal gaps between elements and requires zeroing that gaps. The most simple way is to set font-size: 0 for parent element and then restore font-size for child elements that have display: inline-block by setting their font-size to a px or rem value.
I tried the accepted answer, but eventually found that:
margin: 0 auto;
width: anything less than 100%;
Works well so far.
I've use this two approaches when I need to handle horizontal div alignment.first (Center Aligning Using the margin Property):

Setting the left and right margins to auto specifies that they should split the available margin equally. Center-aligning has no effect if the width is 100%.
