I'm running ubuntu server 18.04 and have just installed nginx. I'm struggling with a wired issue that when calling http://example.com nginx serves it with the default page from /var/www/html/index.nginx-debian.html (I've modified the file to be sure :-), just added another line 'Is this really me?' to it).
serving from /var/www/html/*
But when calling http://www.example.com (adding the www subdomain), nginx responds with what seems to be the real default page, but I have no idea where it is coming from.
serving the "unkown" default page
I found that there's another index.html available in /usr/share/nginx/html/index.html using find / -name *.html which is looks like the default page, too, so I modified this page as well to be sure nginx does not use this file to serve http://www.example.com:
modified /usr/share/nginx/html/index.html
But still (I've refreshed my cache several times :-) it gives me this default page without any modifications I made to the two files mentioned before.
I already checked my DNS entries # and www that both point to the same IP. Also I've not done any major changes to the nginx.conf or default file:

Can you guys enlighten me what's fundamentally wrong here?!

I am new to nginx and trying to get the hang of it. I've been reading the docs, and they say if use the directive root it should tell nginx where to find requests. For example, from my understanding, root /var/www/html should tell nginx to find requests in the directory /var/www/html, but my instance of nginx is not doing that. I am trying to load a file in that directory called test.html, but instead it is trying to look for the file in /usr/share/nginx. Note that this is a pretty fresh install of nginx and I have made few changes to the default config files. I also want to note the path prefix is set to /usr/share/nginx, but my understanding is using the root directive should override that. I am running Ubuntu 18.04 and installed nginx through apt. Let me know if you need any more information. Thanks!

EDIT: There is a soft symlink in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default which points to /etc/nginx/sites-available/default.
OK I've solved the issue by learning something new about nginx. The problem is the server block for port 80 in nginx.conf and /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default were in conflict which I was unaware of. Though /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default is listed as the default server (listen 80 default_server), nginx was using the server block in nginx.conf because this server block has the server name directive (server_name kramericaindustries.hopto.org;) which took precedence over the default_server. (Yes, I was using this domain name for testing.) nginx only uses one server block to fulfill the request.
Because the server block in nginx.conf did not specify a root, it used the nginx path prefix by default which is /usr/share/nginx which does not contain test.html. Therefore, the request failed. I added root /var/www/html; to nginx.conf and everything is now working as expected.
I just installed nginx on my system following https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-nginx-on-ubuntu-18-04, I already have apache server running on my system,
but running the command
systemctl status nginx throws the following error
nginx: [emerg] "fastcgi_pass" directive is not allowed here in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default

I have set the owner of all my files in html to www-data and chmod is at 755 for all folders
ie.
in the folder var/www I execute:
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data html
&
sudo chmod -R 755 html
Which gives the folders these permissions
drwxr-xr-x 6 www-data www-data 4096 oct 14 08:52 podcast
However nginx still serves up a 403 forbidden error:

On my nginx server when i visit example.com/wp-admin or example.com/login i always see the home page of my site, but when i visit example.com/wp-login.php everything works (and login screen is showed).
Is there some config to do in nginx to make these urls (/wp-admin or wp-login) work again?
Note: Other posts permalinks like example.com/hello-world is working.

You appear to have a missing / in your try_files statement. It should be:
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;
}
The second term ($uri/) should cause the URI /wp-admin to be redirected to /wp-admin/ and then invoke the file /wp-admin/index.php.

I don't know why. I'm a newbie on nginx.

Hi every one first of all i'm running joomla 3.4 on a raspberry b+. I use a class 10 Sd card.
On joomla I use:
-communiquer builer
-jch-optimize (which minify HTML and css)
The request which is very very slow is the first get request (for the HTML)
Maybe I should use a usb2 hard drive for the /www/ directory.
Note: I have another website on this raspberry (also running on joomla) which works perfecty.
