Database-first project: missing CSDL file prevents project being built - asp.net

Current project:
DotNet 4.7.1
MVC 5
Database-first from a legacy DB, [DbName].edmx file in /Models/
When trying to build the project in order to test it, I am getting a sudden error (CS1566) that there was an error reading the resource Models.[DbName].csdl, and it could not find part of the path. Sure enough, the entire \edmxResourcesToEmbed\Models\ folder was missing from the \obj\Debug\ directory.
How do I rebuild this? This is my first database-first project, everything else has been code-first, and Google is bringing me back nothing.

Thanks to StackOverflow’s ability to link in other posts you would normally not think were related, I was able to solve this problem.
This issue also came about because of code-first workflows that I had adopted that I needed in order to prevent errors under code first using multi-project repository patterns. Specifically, I modified my *.csproj files to always delete the bin and obj directories of the project(s) that I build/publish:

Why? Because when I didn’t, any attempt to build/publish a code-first project would fail due to “multiple, conflicting web.config files”. Which I don’t have in the first place, but that’s what it complains about. So by habit, I just engineer each project to delete those two directories before building/publishing, so as to avoid that show-stopping error.
Essentially: the system was giving itself a fatal haircut every time it went to build or publish, by clearing out a bin file that was needed by the publish process. All thanks to me and code-first multi-project repository pattern solutions applied to a database-first project. Sweet. facepalm bridgepinch smh
And when I first made this post, I got one Related link shortly after posting. The first half of that reply made sense - select the *.edmx file and change the Build Action value, but the second half confused me until I actually opened up the *.edmx file and clicked on an empty part of the model diagram that came up -- suddenly, my properties sidebar changed to something completely different, which did have the Metadata Artifact Processing value that needed changing.
By following those instructions, then shutting down VS, then removing my *.csproj modifications, then opening the project back up, then building, then reversing those instructions and actually publishing, I was able to reverse the damage I had inadvertently done.
So, FYI for anyone else who has the same problem.

dotnet build CS2012 cannot open dll for writing

I have a .Net Core 3.1 DLL project that all of a sudden didn't build anymore with the following error message:
CSC : error CS2012: Cannot open 'some.dll' for writing -- 'Access to the path 'some.dll' is denied.'
This project is not under any kind of source control. It's not on a build server (what most questions on Stack Overflow is about). It's a project on my local machine.
Now, to rule out Visual Studio I've tried to build it from the command line with dotnet. Same thing unfortunately. Things I've tried:
Close Visual Studio, delete obj folder + bin folder
Delete the entire project and made a new one with the same name
Removed project reference to other project (to rule out: dotnet core build in parallel or simultaneously)
The suggestions here error CS2012: Cannot open <executable path> access to <executable path denied>
This all didn't help. Then I had success for 1 build with:
Changing the target framework from 3.1 to 3.0
Changing the name of the project
This built the project once, because the filepath changes really, but then I got the same error the 2nd built.
Then I've had a few days success by:
Moving the entire solution to a new folder without the problematic project. Then adding a brand new project and adding the code to this complete new project.
But unfortunately after a few days I got the exact same problem. I have no idea what changed. It's always this project (which is a unittest project) and not the other project that it references (also a DLL project). I am out of ideas. Anybody have any suggestions for me to try?

My project's name = "TheGenesysProject.Engine.Test" and it was indeed quarantined by my company's security software as Pavel said in the comments. So I changed it to "JustSomeLib" and the security software didn't quarantine it anymore! Why this is, I have no clue whatsoever...

it must be something in the project itself and not the name of the dll. I restored JustSomeLib so it had the same NuGet packages (xunit + xunit.runner.visualstudio) plus .cs files (just 3 files with some unittests in them nothing fancy) as TheGenesysProject.Engine.Test and it all build and worked once! Then I coded some more stuff. Added an unittest to test my new code and... Bam! In quarantine again. What the heck?! I am just logging this for if people have the same problem as I do.
Update 3
Just to conclude this story. The folder with sourcecode is now excluded from the malware scan and the dll's are not put in quarantine. This solved this problem. Thank you Pavel.

Visual Studio 2012 Web Publish doesn't copy files

I have a Web Application project in VS 2012 and when I use the web publishing tool it builds successfully but doesn't copy any files to the publish target (File System in this case).
If I look at the build output I can see everything gets copied over to obj\Release\Package\PackageTmp\ correctly but then all I see in the build output is this:

Even though it says the publish succeeded there are not files in the target directory for the publish.
I have seen this in multiple projects and sometimes it seems like the Solution/Platform configurations cause this problem but I haven't been able to pinpoint an exact cause for this.
Has anyone else seen this happening or have an idea on how to get this working correctly?
UPDATE:
I may have found a workaround for this. I just had this happen again and I was messing around with the publish settings. Once I changed the selected Configuration on the Settings tab away to another configuration and then back to the one I wanted to use all my files started publishing again. Hopefully this works on other projects in the future.

I posted a bug on Microsoft Connect and heard back from a developer on the VS Web Developer team. He said they have fixed this issue in their internal builds and will releasing an update to the publish tool soon that will fix this problem.
UPDATE 3:
This has been recently fixed with Visual Studio 2012 Update 2
Same problem. The workaround was changing the publish settings from Release to Debug. Re-publish and then change back to Release...
This may be caused by solutions/projects that were created with the RC of vs2012. This happened to me months ago and fixed the problem by making sure my solution build configurations matched my project configurations...
I just recently experienced the same problem when opening the same solution originally created in vs2012RC with VS2012 Express for Web. I did exactly what the original poster suggested and it fixed my problem.

To take this a bit further. You have two files that are created when you create a publish profile.
NewProfile.pubxml
NewProfile.pubxml.user
When you open a project that has these files in the PublishProfile folder from a source control it only has the .pubxml file and not the .publxml.user file, so it creates the .publxml.user file on the fly when you open the project.
When it creates the new .publxml.user on the fly the xml looks like:

When you create a new profile it creates xml that looks like:

If you take the <PropertyGroup> node and put it in the .pubxml.user file your PublishProfiles will start working again.
An easy fix is to delete your publish profile and create a fresh one.
when you right click on your solution and select publish, you have a profile set. delete this and create a new one.
this will fix it.

I had same error and I change the setting from release to debug and the problem resolved..
I had this same problem however none of the answers in this thread worked for me. My issue was that there is a directory that contains dynamically generated (by my app) static HTML files. The entire directory was not being published.
The solution that worked for me was found here:
One issue I got a while back and thought I should document was that certain file types were not being uploaded when I published my project.
The file types in question were .pdf files and .rtf.
The reason this happened was because these file extensions were not recognized as requiring publishing by Visual Studio. Luckily this can be changed in Visual Studio.
Select the file(s) that aren’t being copied. In Properties ensure that Build Action is set to Content.
If this doesn’t work the following can be tried.
Under the Project menu select Package/Publish Web and notice this drop down:
Try changing this to All files in this project folder.
This is because the .pubxml.user contains required information to publish, and that file isn't (and shouldn't) be included in source control. To fix this VS bug, copy the information from the .pubxml.user file to the .pubxml file. The relevant properties are:
<LastUsedBuildConfiguration>Release</LastUsedBuildConfiguration>
<LastUsedPlatform>Any CPU</LastUsedPlatform>
Put those in your .pubxml and you should be good to go.
I tried all of these solutions but this is the one that works every time.
We just change the "Publish method:" from "File System" to for example "Web Deploy", and immediately change it back to "File System".
I have (had) the same problem for several projects. The only ones hit seem to be web projects. Deleting and recreating the profile solves the problem only once. Additionaly, comparing the publishxml generated yields no differences, so it does not seem related to the profile at all.
The workaround mentioned by OP to change build problems back and forth seems the only reliable solution at this time.
I ran into the same problem on VS 2010, after checking publish output, event logs, turning on and checking visual studio logs etc I then decided to remove the web publish (via add/remove) which I believe had been recently updated to v1.0.30810.0. This resolved the problem.
Here we had the same problem.

The following worked for me:
Simply change from Release>Debug>Release (or vice-versa) and then publish.
No need for deleting, editing, publishing anything you don't need to.
My problem was in wrong configuration of myproject.csproj file. '_address-step1-stored.cshtml' file did not copy on publish. 'None' changed to 'Content', now it's ok.
Same problem with VS 2012 Pro with a disk publish target. Project used to publish correctly but started doing this issue where it failed to copy the files to the destination folder.
Solution was to edit the publish profile, change the mode from Release (Any CPU) to debug then back to Release (Any CPU). Doing this causes the PublishProfiles\projname.pubxml.user file to be rewritten (as described above). Looks like it added the LastUsedBuild,LastUsedPlatform and TimeStampOfAssociatedLegacyPublishXmlFile elements under the propertygroup node. After the publish is complete, it adds another ItemGroup with individual files and publish times.
For what it's worth, I eventually gave up on fighting with Web Deploy to get it to do what I wanted (copy deployable files and nothing else), so I scripted it in PowerShell and am really happy with the result. It's much faster than anything I tried through MSBuild/Web Publish, presumably because those methods were still doing things I didn't need.
Here's the gist (literally):

In my case I'm calling this in a CI environment (TeamCity), but it could easily be hooked into a post-build event as well.
This action was successful for me:
Kill Publish Profiles in "Properties>PublishProfiles>xxxx.pubxml" and re-setting again.
I found the I could get around this problem by changing the target location from obj/[release|stage|..] to a new path outside of the solution folders completely eg c:\deployment. It seems like VS 2012 was getting confused and maybe giving up somewhere during the publish process.

Had the same problem recently in VS 2013 for a MVC project in which I imported Umbraco CMS. I couldn't publish. The answer above helped, though I needed a while to figure out what I actually should do in VS. It needed some research e.g. on MS blogs to find out. I try to say it simple:
Choose in the VS toolbar a certain configuration e.g. Release and Any CPU. Run the project.
Afterwards right-click in the Solution Explorer on the solution in question, choose Publish. Create a new publishing profile or use a given one, but always make sure that in the settings the same configuration (e.g. Release and Any CPU) is chosen, as before you run the project the last time.
Additionally in my case it was necessary to delete the OBJ folder because here the settings from my last unsuccessful tries to publish got stuck, though I restarted VS and deleting all publishing profiles.
I have a Web Application with several other referenced Projects in the Solution. I've deployed successfully with a single Publish configuration many times in the past. I changed the Project Configuration from Debug to Release for a Project that had been missed in the past. The next time I attempted to deploy I got these symptoms, where the Publish just quietly fails - it does nothing and says it succeeded:

The only way to recover it was to wipe out the Publish profile, close Visual Studio to force it to save the deletion, reopen it, and recreate the Publish profile from scratch. Once I did that I could Publish fine again.
Win8 VS2012, crappy laptop.
In Visual Studio 2012, switching between releases still causes problems.
We added a pre-build event to delete the obj folder: del /s /f /q $(ProjectDir)\obj and it fixed the issue of publishing. Cleaning works sometimes, but not always.
I finally found the answer by myself. All of the above solutions doesnt work for me.
What i had done is that i move the project to drive c change the project folder to something shorter and boom it publish..
the reason that it failed on my side is that i had very long project name/heirarchy.

I had thought of this because sometimes when i extracted rar file it says that the name/path is too long. I thought it will be the same as visual studio 2012 publish. and it does!

Check your current project that whether you have made back copy with same class name and different page name (Class name will inherit copied file). Ultimately that will confuse the compiler!!!

But I noticed that of our five ASP.NET MVC projects in our main solution, four of them put the deployment package in the right place, while one left it under obj\Debug.
I compared the projects and found a discrepancy. The solution was to change this:

I encountered this with Visual Studio generated Service Reference files becoming too long in terms of the overall path length.
Shortened them by re-generating the Service Reference using svcutil.exe, deleting all the original Service Reference files.
svcutil can be called like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v8.0A\bin\NETFX 4.0 Tools\SvcUtil.exe" /language:CS http://myservice /namespace:*,My.Namespace
My.Namespace should be replaced with the existing namespace in the generated service proxy (typically found in the Reference.cs file) to avoid compilation errors.
http://myservice should be replaced with the service endpoint url.
I've got into same problem. None of the above solutions worked for me.
So, I've excluded the files which failed to copy while publishing.
I had published the website several times. But one day when I modified some aspx file and then tried to publish the website, it resulted in an empty published folder.
On my workaround, I found a solution.
The publishing wizard will reflect any error while publishing but will not copy any file to the destination folder.
To find out the file that generates the error just copy the website folder contents to a new folder and start the visual studio with that website.
Now when you try to publish it will give you the file name that contains errors.
Just rectify the error in the original website folder and try to publish, it will work as it was earlier.
Follow these steps to resolve:
Build > Publish > Profile > New
Create a new profile and configure it with the same settings as your existing profile.
The project will now publish correctly. This often occurs as a result of a source-controlled publish profile from another machine that was created in a newer version of Visual Studio.
FIXED - various solutions offered didn't work for me. What did work for me with VS Community 2017, Windows Server 2012 R2 was to change the TEMP and TMP environmental variables for the user and then restart the system and deploy again (restarting VS was not enough). These temp variables are where VS does the temp publish.
Restarting visual studio after changing temp variables didn't do the trick, had to reboot system.
Try quitting Visual Studio, delete the relevant pubxml.user file in your PublishProfiles directory, restart VS and publish. Worked on VS 2019.
First:
Build in release Configuration.
In Project Properties-> page select All files and folders under
Package/Publish Web.
Rebuild solution (after Clean solution).
now publish.
While publishing recheck what u have opted.

Creating project from existing IIS/ASP.NET website, building stuff

So I'm left maintaining a proprietary codebase from a third-party vendor. The vendor is still sort of around, but support is limp. The site is ASP.NET.
I have made some changes but I am having a really hard time getting IIS to compile these changes in. The bin/ directory has what I believe is a precompiled dll for the core classes. I've changed these but it doesn't recompile. I have tried deleting the dll but then the app refuses to build saying that the Global.asax can't inherit the type anymore, so I don't really know how to rebuild with changes.
I spent all day Saturday setting up a build environment and trying to get a testing thing working. I have just been importing into VS2008 as a web site from the local IIS server. I got it to rebuild the app without changes, but it ignores changes I would place in it.
So I need to make a solution out of this website and/or directory structure so that I can do actual, big, full grown-up rebuilds and make changes to this codebase. Anyone know how I can go about this?
EDIT: A bit more elaboration. I've tried creating a blank project and just Add Existing File... on the whole website directory. This hasn't worked, it stops the import about 10% in.
Keep in mind there are two (actually, three) levels of 'builds' or compiles going on here.
1) The DLLs in the /bin directory should be pre-built, by visual studio or otherwise. The content of .ASPX, ASCX, ASHX, ASAX etc fiels are not included in those.
2) The ASPX, etc files I noted above are then compiled by IIS when the first request comes in (normally; there are ways to change that behavior). That is the source of the error with Global.asax you are seeing; With the DLL(s) gone, the class that Global.asax is supposed to inherit from does not exist.
3) Then there is the just-in-time compilation, which is not relevant for this discussion.
It sounds like you may be missing the source files for the project, or perhaps the web site is not getting properly set up as a project to compile that DLL

Not sure this question is really valid anymore. The source we were working with was rather different than it should have been. Not sure if someone got angry in the past and moved stuff around or what, but grabbing a new copy of the source fixed most of our issues. I am able to build now with an included csproj.
This doesn't really help many others with the same issue I suppose, but if you are getting weird build behavior like this, you might want to start with basics, like making sure that your source checkout is valid.
I am new in asp.net so I am not sure it is a professional way or not.
I have the project without .snl file. I just create a empty web site and then paste the files inside the folder where I created the project.
It worked for me.
I think pasting the files and folder directly by file manager will help you.

How to get Visual Studio 'Publish' functionality to include files from post build event?

I am currently attempting to use Visual Studio 2010 'Publish' and MSDeploy functionality to handle my web deployment needs but have run into a roadblock with regards to customizing the package depending on my build configuration.
I develop in a 32bit environment but need to create a release package for a 64bit environment, so in the 'Release' configuration I have a post build event that copies the 64bit version of a third-party dll into the bin directory overwriting the 32bit version. When I use the 'Publish' functionality, even though the correct 64bit dll is being copied to the bin directory, it doesn't get included in the package.
Is there a way to get the 'Publish' to include files that have been copied into the bin directory during a post build event?

In your scenario you are using post build event, I would recommend dropping the post build event and implement your actions using your own MSBuild targets instead of post build event. Below you'll find the text of the other answer.

Great question. I just posted a very detailed blog entry about this at Web Deployment Tool (MSDeploy) : Build Package including extra files or excluding specific files.
Here is the synopsis. After including files, I show how to exclude files as well.
Including Extra Files
Including extra files into the package is a bit harder but still no bigee if you are comfortable with MSBuild, and if you are not then read this. In order to do this we need to hook into the part of the process that collects the files for packaging. The target we need to extend is called CopyAllFilesToSingleFolder. This target has a dependency property, PipelinePreDeployCopyAllFilesToOneFolderDependsOn, that we can tap into and inject our own target. So we will create a target named CustomCollectFiles and inject that into the process. We achieve this with the following (remember after the import statement).

Here what I did was create the item _CustomFiles and in the Include attribute told it to pick up all the files in that folder and any folder underneath it. Then I use this item to populate the FilesForPackagingFromProject item. This is the item that MSDeploy actually uses to add extra files. Also notice that I declared the metadata DestinationRelativePath value. This will determine the relative path that it will be placed in the package. I used the statement Extra Files%(RecursiveDir)%(Filename)%(Extension) here. What that is saying is to place it in the same relative location in the package as it is under the Extra Files folder.
Excluding files
If you open the project file of a web application created with VS 2010 towards the bottom of it you will find a line with.

BTW you can open the project file inside of VS. Right click on the project pick Unload Project. Then right click on the unloaded project and select Edit Project.
This statement will include all the targets and tasks that we need. Most of our customizations should be after that import, if you are not sure put if after! So if you have files to exclude there is an item name, ExcludeFromPackageFiles, that can be used to do so. For example let’s say that you have file named Sample.Debug.js which included in your web application but you want that file to be excluded from the created packages. You can place the snippet below after that import statement.

By declaring populating this item the files will automatically be excluded. Note the usage of the FromTarget metadata here. I will not get into that here, but you should know to always specify that.
I found a workaround for the problem by using the ExcludeFilesFromDeployment element within the project file. I got the idea from Web Deployment: Excluding Files and Folders
So if you need to package project files as they exist in your project directory after a successful build and associated post build steps then do the following.
Edit "Package/Publish Web" project settings and
select Items to deploy to be "All files in this project folder"
Unload the project
Right click on the unloaded project and select to edit the project config
Locate the PropertyGroup element associated to the configuration setting e.g. "Release"
Within the PropertyGroup element add in the following elements and exclude files and folders you don't want in the package

This solves my problem for the time being but if there is a better solution then please let me know, as this is not ideal due to the hackery involved, but then again perhaps this is an uncommon deployment scenario?
Select your files or folders and Change Build action as Content from Properties Window.
I know its a old question but none of these worked for me .
In 2017 VS I just right clicked on the extra folder to be published and select publish it worked.
Example:
Adding the bin folder (and it's contents) to the project caused the files to be copied to the publish output directory.
For me, my issue was that I needed to place a proprietary software license file in the bin/ folder, but did not want to copy it manually each deployment.

I know this is an old conversation but I came upon it while trying to do the same thing and I thought it would be helpful to add what I found here.
Nearly all the articles about including extra files in your publication use this method of adding the CopyAllFilesToSingleFolderForPackageDependsOn or CopyAllFilesToSingleFolderForMSDeployDependsOn items in the PropertyGroup and they all same something like "I added this to the end of the file ..."
This is what I did and spent an afternoon trying to find why nothing was happening until I realised there was already a PropertyGroup section at the top of the file. When I put my CopyAllFilesToSingleFolderForPackageDependsOn into that section it worked fine.

How can I prevent Visual Studio 2005's "Clean" command from removing 3rd party binaries?

I have a Sitecore/ASP.NET projects that I'm developing. Today at some point I inadvertently hit the "Clean" option in the solution context menu. It took me a while to figure out why my site was hopelessly broken. Turns out Visual Studio went ahead and deleted several required assemblies from the \bin dir which are not part of my project.
How can I prevent this from happening again?
The odd thing is that it did NOT delete everything... just a small handful. It left many that are not directly referenced by my project. This makes me wonder exactly what this feature is supposed to do? Is there some sort of file flag I can set? None of the files are set to read-only. If you're interested in details, the following got deleted:
Sitecore.Analytics.dll
Sitecore.Client.XML
Stimulsoft.Base.dll
Stimulsoft.Report.dll
Stimulsoft.Report.Web.dll
Stimulsoft.Report.WebDesign.dll
Telerik.Web.UI.dll
UPDATE: You know what... I guess what I'm really more interested in here is WHY Visual Studio is leaving most of the files and only deleting these specific ones.
The correct answer to your problem will depend on how you are referencing the assemblies and how you include them in your project output.
The bin and obj folders generated by a project are best considered "output" folders; these folders should only contain files produced by the project build.
When you perform a clean or rebuild of a project, all intermediary and compiled files are deleted from these folders.
You should be comfortable this is happening.
You should be able to restore these folders by running the build process at any time. If you have added files to these folders directly, it breaks the purpose of these folders and means you ought to rethink how you're adding those files.
The preferred way to reference compiled assemblies is to add them somewhere inside your source folders. From there, they can be added to a source control system as easily as any other file and can be referenced/copied by projects which depend on them. In my work, we have a "Libraries" folder which contains numerous third-party assemblies referenced by multiple projects in our solution hierarchy.
Try using a source tree like this and seeing if it works for you:
/Projects/My Solution/
/Projects/My Solution/Libraries/
/Projects/My Solution/Project A/
/Projects/My Solution/Project B/
We always add an AfterBuild event to the project file containing Sitecore.

Where the CreateItem Include is the path to where you have placed your Sitecore binaries.
Put the dlls in a different directory. You will probably not want them as part of the project. Reference the dlls from the new directory. When you compile the dlls will be copied to the bin directory.
I work with lots of projects and keep a bin directory at the root of my projects to store 3rd party dlls for exactly this reason.
Example directory structure:
MyProjects
- bin
- 3rdParty.dll
- Project1
- Project2
- ProjectN
This allows all the projects to have a well-known reference location for 3rd party dlls without having to copy the dll into each project.
If you are working on a team you should all agree on a standard directory structure for your code. This will save you lots of headaches beyond just this.
In case of Sitecore, just make sure to set the property of the reference(Sitecore.Kernel, Sitecore.Client, etc):
'Copy Local' = false.
I believe that if you put these files in a subdirectory other than bin, Visual Studio won't remove them. You can still make the new subdirectory part of your deployment.
Well, I'm going to go ahead and answer my own question, since it seems like the simplest answer so far. I marked the assemblies in question as Read-only. Now they don't get cleaned.
Still wondering why most of the others don't get deleted.
