RStudio won't open in Windows 10 (HP Elitebook laptop) - r

I have just been upgraded to Windows 10 on my company laptop and I have installed R (64-bit 3.5.0) and RStudio desktop (latest version, installed a couple of days ago). Unfortunately RStudio just will not open (click the launch icon and nothing happens).
I have looked through https://support.rstudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/200488508-RStudio-Desktop-Will-Not-Start and not had any luck yet. My findings as follows:
1. Check for Startup Files = there are no .Rprofile, .Renviron, and .RData files there.
2. RStudio cannot find R = see question below.
3. Check firewall and proxy settings = I understand from my IT colleagues that we don't have any blocks like this.
4. Reset RStudio's state = this didn't make any difference. The folder just recreated itself. I also checked the log file (this is blank).
5. Using Macports R = n/a.
Thus, I had two questions:
QUESTION 1: re. 2.: when I hold Ctrl on opening RStudio, still nothing happens. Is there possibly another way to set the search path for RStudio? Or a different keyboard shortcut in Windows 10? Also, just to note this is the message I get in R (I guess the tilde aren't a problem?
QUESTION 2: any other ideas?

FIX IDENTIFIED BY MY IT DEPT:
CAUSE: There appears to be a conflict between rStudio and the so-called 'Wacom ISD Service' on my laptop [which I believe is to do with the tablet/touchscreen functionality].
FIX: In Windows, go to >> Computer Management >> Services & Applications >> Services, disable 'Wacom ISD Service' [set 'startup type' to 'manual'].

R Studio Fatal error: 'R_TempDir'contains space

I tried to download the latest version (4.2.0) of R on my windows computer and received this error message upon trying to open the program. "Fatal error: 'R_TempDir' contains space". Has anyone ever had this issue or have any ideas on how to resolve it? I have tried reinstalling the program and moving where the program is stored but no luck.
I also experienced this issue with 4.2.0 of R on Windows 10 but not prior versions of R.
In my case, the reason was the default temporary file folder was within my user directory and my user ID has a space in it. Apparently this causes an issue.
I was able to work around it by setting the global environment variable TMPDIR in windows:
Go to the search box next to the start button and type "environment"
Click on the choice which says "Edit the system environment variables"
Click the button that says "Environment Variables" near the bottom of the window
Click "New" and enter TMPDIR for variable name and some suitable directory without spaces under variable value (I chose C:\Temp)
As an aside, I do not believe this is an RStudio specific issue (and 4.2.0 isn't a version for RStudio anyway).
Thank you Venk for your post. It didn't work for me, but it pointed me in the direction of a solution that did.
I changed the values of my TEMP and TMP variables to a folder that had no spaces in it or in any folder name in the path (as you note).
I'm working on a Windows 10 machine.

P.S. My first solution was to revert to an earlier version of R, which initially worked. Recently though, I got the same error, even using a previous version. I'm no expert, but the whole thing is very weird IMO.
Had the same issue, and the other proposed solutions didn't resolve it for me. (R 4.2.2 and Windows 10.)
Solution found here worked for me:
create a file named renviron.site that contains the following text, and save it to the Desktop, using a text-editing program.
TMP=C:/Temp TEMP=C:/Temp TMPDIR=C:/Temp
if a copy already exists, may need to handle that case-by-case
move the file to C:\Program Files\R\R-4.2.x\etc
I wasn't able to save directly to this folder, despite being in the admin account.
I tried the other solutions and none worked. I came across this post that suggested to not install R in the /Program Files/ folder, to instead modify the installation to the folder C:\R\ which worked.
I didn't go back and undo the work done based on previous suggestions, so I'm not sure if they too are needed.

R will not run after latest windows 10 updates

I have updated my windows and R cannot run, and hence neither can R studio. When I run R GUI it just freezes and is unresponsive. I have allowed chromium exemption to the firewall
I am on Windows Insider program and has just updated to
Windows 10 Home, Insider Preview
Evaluation Copy.Build 20190.rs_prerelease.200807-1609
Note that R GUI freezes and then shuts down on its own, so maybe the problem is R GUI and not R Studio.
I get the following errors on R studio.

RStudio can't establish a connection to R. This usually indicates one of the following:
The R session is taking an unusually long time to start, perhaps because of slow operations in startup scripts or slow network drive access.
RStudio is unable to communicate with R over a local network port, possibly because of firewall restrictions or anti-virus software.
Please try the following:
If you've customized R session creation by creating an R profile (e.g. located at ~/.Rprofile), consider temporarily removing it.
If you are using a firewall or antivirus software which guards access to local network ports, add an exclusion for the RStudio and rsession executables.
Run RGui, R.app, or R in a terminal to ensure that R itself starts up correctly.

This has been fixed with Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 20201 (released on August 26, 2020 in the Dev channel).The previous two builds were missing 64-bit APIs required by the prebuilt version of R.
Same issue.
Rollback to the previous version solves the problem.
I think it is about the update of the graphic features of Windows.

windeployqt.exe not working ? Application does not start

I have a simple application using
QT += core gui network webkitwidgets
I've used windeployqt.exe to generate the 32 bits release on my win-10 64 bit computer. When I put the folder on a win-7 64 Bit desktop and double-click the app.exe, it never starts.
I can see it in the task manager, but I can't kill it, and if I try I cannot close the explorer folder in which I double clicked anymore.
I've checked the usual platform, ICU, qwindows.dll, and so on.

EDIT Precisions:
I've compiled with default 32 Bit kit: "build-Test-Desktop_Qt_5_5_1_MinGW_32bit-Release" with "mingw492_32"
I have a package "release" generated by windeployqt.exe using the --webkit switch. I start a command prompt:
> set path=
> set mingw=
Then I make sure that no Qt/Mingw things exists anymore in my environment variables.
I also rename "c:\Qt" into "c:\ __Qt".
I move my release folder on my desktop.
I start release\test.exe ( from the clean path shell )
Everything runs fine! So The release/test.exe has everything it needs without the path/mingw variable.
But as soon as I put the folder on another windows machine ( 7 instead of 10 ) it never starts.
I tried dependency walker. It shows a lot of "API-MS-WIN*.dll" missing...
It even shows much more missing dlls on the "good" machine than on the bad one !!!
Every single "missing dll" on the "bad" target machine is actually in system32 on this machine.
Thanks for advice, every advice is welcome, I'm a bit desperate... :)

It seems to be related to the machine itself. I have successfully deployed this (very small) app to 2 non developer machine on win7 and win8 respectively. But the above "bad machine" still resits running it...

The problem seems not to be general but related to this one particular machine. Hence, feel free to close or move to the appropriate forum as it is not related to Qt/windeplyqt. If I figure out a solution, and question is closed, I'll simply add a last edit. Safe Boot and malwarebyte are my next actions.
After a long investigation.
Do not believe dependency walker, it used to be a top notch tool but it is now outdated.
If there is a missing dll, the system will prompt you with "cannot load dll xxx.dll" anyway.
Your best shot in case a soft runs on machine X but not on Machine Y is:
start in safe mode ( run: msconfig --> diagnostic startup )
turn off any antivirus or non microsoft/driver software,
"run as administrator".
If you can run with step 3. Then proceed by elimination:
run without admin rights,
Start anti spyware, etc...
Add appropriate exception to your antivirus if it is the root cause.
If the antivirus is not the root cause, run process monitor on both machines. Then compare, what Failed on one machine and not the other ? Read the windows event log and compare any error messages on both machines.
run sfc /scannow to check disk
run a complete anti spyware scan/ pc-repair tool ( malwarebytes, combofix, ... )
Make sure you really have the very same package on both machines, make sure you are not trying to run an exe on mac OS, make sure your computer is on.
Call the oracle, you are in the matrix...
In my case the problem was Avast and it was solved by adding appropriate exception.

Setting up RStudio Portable Default R version

I recently discovered a portable version of R and RStudio #

At any-rate, I am jumping from pc to pc at my university, and I'd like to get Portable R-studio to recognize Portable R as the default R version. Most computers at the university already have several versions of r-installed, and RStudio uses one of those versions of R. When I go into the Global Options to change the default version, it does not "see" portable R on the USB drive.
I am basically hopping I can run R without constantly having to download packages, specifying the work directory, downloading Scripts, data from Google Drive, etc...
Any suggestions? I am open. Thanks for your help.
I did not need to touch the registry.
I first installed R portable and then R Studio portable, both from Sourceforge.
After launching R Studio for the first time, I was shown the option of choosing the installation of R to be used, as shown in

I browsed to branch \PortableApps\R-Portable\App\R-Portable\bin, where executables are located. There I selected the 64-bit version.
If you want to change later the version used, you open R Studio and go to Tools -> Option -> General -> R Version.
This avoids modifying the registry, with the two advantages of Portable Apps:
Leaving no trace of the app in the system (or, at least, a much milder one).
Being really portable (or, at least, much more so).
On Windows, RStudio uses the system registry to find where installed versions of R are located. You'll need to edit the registry yourself to let it know about new versions. Fortunately you can do this in HKEY_CURRENT_USER so admin rights shouldn't be required. Here are the keys and values you'll want to write:

The link to R Portable above is a bit misleading. In order to run a portable version of R AND RStudio, you also need the 27MB portable RStudio here. What's even more confusing is that it has the same name as the RPortable file.
It took me a bit of time to figure that one out. Perhaps you could edit your question to point to both for those who wish for an IDE?
And, IMHO, it's not truly portable, because when you move from one machine to another you need to specify the R version on your USB drive and also the work directory. Pity.
I manage to link RStudio (not portable version) to the aforementioned version of R Portable, directly through Global Options -> R Version -> Choose a specific version of R -> Browse,
and the trick was selecting the R-Portable\App\R-Portable folder. Choosing another one doesnt allow RStudio to find the instalation.

RStudio Desktop 0.98.1006 for Windows unable to access mapped network drives

Recently I updated my RStudio Desktop for Windows to the latest version 0.98.953. When running a previously working script accessing data stored on a mapped network drive (university personal file store), error occurred saying the specified path did not exist, which was not true - the directories and files were all accessible from Windows Explorer.
Further investigations showed that there were crosses on the concerned drive icons in RStudio's File - Open File... dialogue box. However, using dir() to display these files in the native R GUI was OK, suggesting that it was a problem of RStudio's. I have uninstalled, reinstalled RStudio and updated to the latest Version 0.98.1006 but the problem persisted.
I searched the RStudio community forums but only found one similar case reported (https://support.rstudio.com/hc/communities/public/questions/200655286-RStudio-can-t-see-my-network-directory?locale=en-us) and no practical reply. Could anyone with similar experience help me with this?

My (increasingly annoying) workaround is to manually open the mapped network drive, which works for both eclipse and RStudio. After initialization accessing files from the mapped network drive works perfectly.
