Delivering Firebase Cloud Messaging notifications to specific Firebase Users - firebase

this is a bit of a composite question, I'll try my best to separate the various parts even if they all have a common intent.
Common intent
Having a clear way of delivering notifications about posts regarding specific topics to Firebase Users (and not simply to application instances).
I have tried various methods, and I can't find a definitive answer about which one is the best one.
Method 1 - Relying only on the database
Each Firebase User has its own document in the Firestore at users/{userId}
This document contains two collections: tokens and interests.
The token collection contains a list of documents which have FCM tokens as one of their fields. Each time an user signs in the application or FirebaseInstanceIDService.onTokenRefresh() is called, the collection is updated to add the new token.
The interest collection contains a list of interests which simply are strings and are used as tags for posts. This collection has a mirror as interests/{interestId}/users/{userId} showing all the users interested in something. (This is kept updated and synchronised via a Cloud Function)
When a new post is created under a specific interest, I can get a list of all the users interested and then get their tokens from their document. Finally, I send a notification to each individual token.
Problems
This solution is not elegant (this isn't that big of a problem)
With the new GDPR rules I fear I might not be allowed to save tokens
directly on the Database
If the user signs out when he's offline, the
token isn't removed from his document, and the new user receives
notifications for the old interests.
Should I keep track of what the current token is and update it each time an user signs in ignoring FirebaseInstanceIDService.onTokenRefresh()? Else only the user signed in when the service is called would update the database.
Method 2 - Using FCM topic subscriptions
This should be the best option for me, but I can't understand how to make it work with multiple users on the same phone (always one at a time though)
The way I would handle this is still have the users/{userId}/interests collection, removing users/{userId}/tokens and interests/{interestId}/users, and subscribe/unsubscribe from the various topics as the user signs in and out.
Problems
What happens if the user signs out when he's offline? There is no way to retrieve the current subscriptions and remove each one, potentially resulting in conflicting topics subscriptions.

Could a malicious user be able to modify Firestore form front end functions?

I have this security concern with Firestore. The issue is could a malicious user for example inject data in to his document? Or even Worst having access to different collections? I know rules play a major part in here, but since I am creating docs/updating docs/deleting docs from front end could an abuse for crud happen in the context of the single user?
Also there is another part; I want to create a userSub collection (from front end) it will have a subscription info.

Could a malicious user get the uid from authContext and make crud ops to modify the mention doc in the collection to let’s say 10 days from now extending his sub? Since he knows what doc I am creating for those values (from source code in chrome)?
You must not allow users to update their subscription information from client. This should be done from backend only for example, if you use Stripe for payment, you should use their webhooks which would send subscription information to your backend/Cloud function that would update users subscription in your database or Firebase Auth custom claims.
You must ensure that this data is read only from users side using security rules if using database.

Best method to upload data to multiple documents in Firestore

I am currently working on an iOS App that uses Cloud Firestore from Firebase.
I was wondering: what is the best way (cost, efficiency and security-wise) to upload some data to multiple Firestore documents simultaneously (or almost simultaneously)?
* The data I have to upload consists of the following: there are two users (User A is the user currently using the app, User B is the one whose profile is currently being seen by User A). If User A saves User B's profile, I must upload User B's UID to User A's Firestore Document. Then, I have to increase a counter in User A's Firestore Document. Finally, I must add User A's UID to User B's Firestore Document. - Note that with Firestore Document I mean either a document Field or a document Subcollection.
The choices are:
Upload everything from the client: seems the best method, cost-wise: it doesn't require extra Cloud Functions usage. I would create a Batch Operation and upload all the data from there*. The downside is that the client must be able to access multiple unrelated collections and documents.
Update one document from the client, then update everything else from Cloud Functions: this method is the best one efficiency and security-wise; the client only uploads data to the user's document*, without accessing unrelated collections and documents. Also, the client only has to upload a fraction of the data that it had to upload in the previous method, saving bandwidth and cellular data / WiFi usage. The downside is that the usage of Cloud Functions would increase, eventually resulting in more costs.
Update one document from the client, update the counter* from the client and then update everything else form Cloud Functions: this method is somewhat a hybrid between the first two, as I think that updating the counter from the client is more secure (Cloud Functions' .onWrite trigger may happen twice or more, increasing the counter multiple times?).
My first thought was to go with method 2, as it's far more secured and efficient, but I would like to have someone else's advice too, before "wasting" too much time coding something wrong.
I hope this isn't any kind of duplicate, as I couldn't find anything that answered my question with enough specificity.

I would follow the third approach: updating from the client the current user collections (the saved_profiles collection and the counter field), which are private and only accessible by this user (configure Firestore Security Rules) and updating the other user's collection (users_who_saved_my_profile) with a triggered Cloud Function. As these operations are not controlled by security rules, they can access any part of the database. This way no unnecessary permissions are granted to any user.

Send push notification to people nearby through Firebase Cloud Function without manually managing push tokens?

Seems like majority of solutions here require the developer to manually save each user's push token in addition to Firebase saving these tokens as well, then iterate through these and send out notifications. This is not really desirable since I would be storing push tokens in two separate places and need to make sure their lifecycle management is synchronized, which is error prone 😢Is there a better way?
Some options I considered:
Give each user a person/unique topic, then map out a geolocation per topic; then filter through these locations, aggregate these topics into batches of 500 and send a push. This is probably the best option so far 🤷‍♂️ but seems like a silly use of topics API.
Bucket users in cities, with each city corresponding to a topic; then find all cities near a location, and send a push to those topics. This is doable, but lots of complex city mapping code without much flexibility (vs. considering a simple radius).
Manually store push token → user → geolocation; filter out the ones you want, then send a push to the token specifically. This is problematic for many reasons (multiple device management, push token lifecycle management, data duplication, etc.)
Ideally, there is a way to send out a push notification to a list of user IDs, without even touching push tokens, is there a way to do this?
The only way to associate a device token to a user ID is to store that mapping yourself. You should also assume that one user could have multiple devices. FCM doesn't have a concept of a "user". It only knows device tokens. Your app has to bring the concept of a user, then map that to tokens in code.
Note that any messaging solution that requires topics is not "secure". Anyone can effectively receive messages from any topic.

Firebase custom authentication how to choose unique user ID?

Firebase is great as it offers a lot of authentication providers. In one of my apps, I use four different providers provided by Firebase (Email, Twitter, Facebook and Google), but I also need to let users sign in via LinkedIn.
As Firebase SDK does not offer LinkedIn, I need to implement the login flow manually, which doesn't seem to be difficult, but there is one huge issue which I see. During the creation of a custom JWT token, I need to assign a user ID. And I have no idea how to generate one while making sure that my approach will not conflict with user IDs which Firebase generate on its own for other providers.
For example, let's imagine that a user Andriy Gordiychuk signs in via LinkedIn and his email address is andriy#gordiychuk.com. A simple way to create a user ID would be to take an email address (andriy#gordiychuk.com) and to randomise it using some hashing function. I would get some random id such as aN59nlphs... which I would be able to recreate as long as the same user signs in. So far, so good.
However, how can I be sure that the ID which I get is not already used by another user who signed in via Twitter, for example?
One way to mitigate this issue is to store LinkedIn user IDs in a Firestore collection. Then, when I need to create a token, I first check whether I already have an ID for this user. If not, I would hash the email address, and I would try to create a user with this ID. If this ID is already occupied, I would then try to create another ID until I stumble upon an ID which is not occupied, and I would then use it.
I don't like this approach for two reasons:
Although the chance that I would generate an already occupied ID
is small, theoretically the process of finding an "available ID" can
take a lot of steps (an infinite loop in a worst-case scenario).
Once I find an available ID, I must store it. Given that all these calls are asynchronous there is a real chance that I would create a user with a suitable ID, but because the save operation fails, I would not be able to use this ID.
So, does anyone know how to choose user IDs for such use case correctly?
It's fairly common to generate a string with enough entropy (randomness) to statistically guarantee it will never be duplicated. This is for example behind the UUID generators that exist in many platforms, and similarly behind Firebase Realtime Database's push keys, and Cloud Firestore's add() keys. If there's one in your platform, I recommend starting with that.

What is the difference between Firebase cloud messaging types from latency and security perspectives?

When we are talking about individual private push notifications per user (rather than per device), there are couple of ways to send them via Firebase:
Collect registration tokens, associate them with the user on the trusted server and send notifications to all registered tokens.
Assign a topic per user, e.g. topics/user-id and let the app subscribe to it upon successful login / unsubscribe on logout.
However, Firebase documentation recommends to use approach no. 1, saying "For fast, secure delivery to single devices or small groups of devices, target messages to registration tokens, not topics."
One concern is the latency (referring to "fast") issue. Is it really that significant in practice comparing registration tokens vs topics-based messaging?
More serious concern is security.
What does Firebase documentation mean exactly by "... secure delivery..." as opposed to topics?
In our case one device will likely be used by multiple users logging in and out. That means registration tokens will have to be disassociated from the user in the backend when user logs out. If something goes wrong and registration token is not disassociated, device will continue getting previous person's notifications.
Is this the trade-off I have to accept or am I missing some other option?
There are a few questions in there. Let's see if I can cover them main ones.
If you need to deliver messages to multiple tokens, the two approaches you're considering are:
Subscribe the app installs/tokens to a specific topic, that you then deliver the message to.
Keep your own registry of tokens for the user, and do the fan-out of user-to-tokens in your own code.
The biggest difference is in where the fan-out of a user to their tokens happens. When you use topics it is done by Firebase on Google's servers, while in the second case you do it yourself. There is no guaranteed performance difference between these two, but in the latter case you have more control. So you spend more effort (writing your own code for something Firebase can do for you), and in turn gain more control (which may or may not translate into better performance)..
The second question is around the security of topics. The documentation contains that note because topics often have a much simpler structure than tokens. For example, if you have a topic-per-user, you will often use the UID as the topic ID. And since you may be sharing that UID in other places, it is possible that other users may know a user's UID. And since subscribing to a topic only requires that you know your own token and the topic ID, that means that any user can subscribe to another user's topic.
