I am trying to import data from in xls format in R, but it reads the header incorrectly, instead of
X1
R interprets the data as
`X1 `
that makes writing complicated R syntax impossible.
How this issue can be resolved ?
One can skip the header record and give your own column names with any number of R packages that read excel data. Here is an example with readxl::read_excel().

I export my CSV file with python, numbers are wrapped as ="10000000000" in cells, for example:
name,price
"something expensive",="10000000000",
in order to display the number correctly, I prefer to wrap the big number or string of numbers(so someone could open it directly without reformating the column), like order ID into this format.
It's correct with excel or number, but when I import it with R by using read.csv, cells' values show as =10000000000.
Is there any solution to this?

Also, in my experience read_csv() from the tidyverse library reads data in much faster than read.csv() and I think also has more logic built into it for nonideal cases encountered, so maybe it's worth trying.
I'm trying to import the YRBS ASCII .dat file found here to analyze in R, but I'm having trouble importing the file. I followed the recommendations here and here but none seem to work. More specifically, it's still showing up as being one column/variable in R with 14,765 observations.
I've tried using the readLines(), read.table, and read.csv functions but none seem to be separating the columns.
Here are the specific codes I tried:
readLines("D:/Projects/XXH2017_YRBS_Data.dat", n=5)
read.csv("D:/Projects/XXH2017_YRBS_Data.dat", header = FALSE)
read.table("D:/Projects/XXH2017_YRBS_Data.dat", header = FALSE)
readLines and read.csv only provided one column and I got an error message from using read.table that stated that line 1 did not have 23 elements (which I'm assuming is just referring to the missing values?).
The data also starts from line 1 so I cannot use skip = 1 like some have suggested online.
How do I import this file into R so that I can separate the columns?

First, use an Access file version then use try following codes.
Compare it to Access data.

I'm trying to read a zipped folder called etfreit.zip contained in Purchases from April 2016 onward.
Inside the zipped folder is a file called 2016.xls which is difficult to read as it contains empty rows along with Japanese text.
I have tried various ways of reading the xls from R, but I keep getting errors. This is the code I tried:

I'm trying to skip the first 10 rows as I simply wish to read the data in the xls file. The code works only to the extent that it runs, but the data looks truly bizarre.
Would greatly appreciate any help on reading the spreadsheet properly in R for purposes of performing analysis.
There is more than one bizzare thing going on here I think, but I had some success with (somewhat older) gdata package:
data = gdata::read.xls("2016.xls")
By the way, treating xls file as csv seldom works. Actually it shouldn't work at all :) Find out a proper import function for your type of data and then use it, don't assume that read.csv is going to take care about anything else than csv (properly).
As per your comment: I'm not sure what you mean by "not properly aligned", but here is some code that cleans the data a bit, and gives you numeric variables instead of factors (note I'm using tidyr for that):
data2 = data[-c(1:7), -c(1, 6)]
names(data2) = c("date", "var1", "var2", "var3")
data2[, c(2:4)] = sapply(data2[, c(2:4)], tidyr::extract_numeric)
# Optionally convert the column with factor dates to Posixct
data2$date = as.POSIXct(data2$date)
Also, note that I am removing only 7 upper rows - this seems to be the portion of the data that contains the header with Japanese.

I am using large datasets for my research (4.72GB) and I discovered "bigmemory" package in R that supposedly handles large datasets (up to the range of 10GB). However, when I use read.big.matrix to read a csv file, I get the following error:

Error in read.big.matrix("x.csv", type = "integer", header = TRUE,
: Dimension mismatch between header row and first data row.
I think the issue is that the csv file is not full, i.e., it is missing values in several cells. I tried removing header = TRUE but then R aborts and restarts the session.
Does anyone have experience with reading large csv files with missing data using read.big.matrix?
It may not be solving your problem directly, but you might find a package of mine filematrix useful. The relevant function is fm.create.from.text.file.

Basically, error means there is a column in the CSV file with row names. If you don't pass has.row.names=TRUE, bigmemory will consider row names a separate column, and without header you'll get mismatch.
I personally found data.table package more useful for dealing with large data set cases, YMMV
This code works, however, I wonder if there is a more efficient way. I have a CSV file that has a single column of ticker symbols. I then read this csv into R and apply functions to each ticker using a for loop.
I read in the csv, and then go into the data frame and pull out the character vector that the for loop needs to run properly.
SymbolListDataFrame = read.csv("DJIA.csv", header = FALSE, stringsAsFactors=F)
SymbolList = SymbolListDataFrame[[1]]
for (Symbol in SymbolList){...}
Is there a way to combine the first two lines I have written into one? Maybe read.csv is not the best command for this?

I am using the readlines method suggested by Jake and Bartek. There is a warning "incomplete final line found on" the csv file but I ignore it since the data is correct.
SymbolList <- readLines("DJIA.csv")
SymbolList <- read.csv("DJIA.csv", header = FALSE, stringsAsFactors=F)[[1]]
readLines function is the best solution here.
Please note that read.csv function is not only for reading files with csv extensions. This is simply read.table function with parameters like header or sep set differently. Check the documentation for more info.
