Attempting to create a Spring MVC hello world web app. It is currently returning HTTP Status 404. 404 means it can't find the file, but I'm not sure why. I think my servlet.xml is pointing to the appropriate folder (component-scan). I think all the files are named correctly(no typos). See the picture for the error.

Not sure why its not deploying, any help is appreciated thanks.
Make the following change to your web.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

</listener>
<servlet>

I've found the answer, it was a simple mistake on my end. I was not including the necessary namespace files and their corresponding schemaLocations in the dispatcher-servlet.xml, namely:

xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.springframework.org/schema/context http://www.springframework.org/schema/context/spring-context-3.2.xsd http://www.springframework.org/schema/mvc http://www.springframework.org/schema/mvc/spring-mvc-3.0.xsd">"

Any help?
assuming FirstSpringMVCApp your application name and you have deployed your application in a server which is running on the port 8080 then you should use the following URL to run the application
localhost:8080/FirstSpringMVCApp/hellospring
resolved it:
#RequestMapping(value="/")
public String gotoIndex(){
return "index";
}
and its work!!

In web.xml when we replace "*htm" with "/", then the error of resource not available was solved.
The original issue is because you're sending all requests ending *.htm to Spring:
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>Spring MVC Dispatcher Servlet</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>*.htm</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
But your controller is mapped to /hello without an extension.
Change the #RequestMapping in your controller to:
#RequestMapping(value="/hello.htm",method=RequestMethod.GET)
If you are accessing http://localhost:8080/HelloWorldExampleWithSpring3MVCInEclipse/, you need to create a WebContent/index.jsp in your project to make this URL work.
index.jsp:
<%# page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"
pageEncoding="ISO-8859-1"%>
<jsp:forward page="/hello.htm"></jsp:forward>
See the sample code here.
