I use a mac, and would like to work on an existing asp.net MVC project that’s running on a Windows Server on our local network. Using VSCode or the new Visual Studio for Mac, is it possible for me to work on that project over the network, either via smb mounted volumes or some other method, while still having the benefits of Intellisense? I have written a website in Visual Studio using .Net Framework (4.7.2). (Note: it is not using .net Core)
It is an asp.net website that uses .aspx pages and uses a SQL Server Database on my laptop.
Is it possible to run this website on my Synology NAS and if so would it be able to connect to the database on my laptop (that is on the same network).
.Net framework app can only be run in Windows OS. But Synology is Linux based.
So if you want to run your app in Synology badly, you need to convert it to .Net Core app.

You need a full os running windows, and then you also need sql server installed, and you also need iis (internet services (the web server)) installed on that server.
So you need a windows os, and preferably a server based version of windows (such as windows server 2019).
Unless that server allows you to install and run windows software? Then no that will not work.
I currently have an Ubuntu 18.04 environment. For our course, we need to have Visual Studio, ASP.NET, Microsoft SQL Server and IIS installed. One solution was to install the Windows OS on VMware/VirtualBox, but since Windows OS on a virtual machine is a bit heavy on my laptop, is there any other slightly "light" OS that allows me to install the 4 requirements already mention?
As Lex Li says the IIS is Windows only,VS is only available on Windows and Mac. So you could only use the windows.
Here is a workaround, if you are familiar with the VS code, you could use VS code develop asp.net application, then you could use docker to run the asp.net application with IIS.

Since I am planning to buy a new MacBook Pro (2017) and currently working on a Windows 10-device on a ASP.NET MVC (Not ASP.NET Core MVC) project for my internship, I was wondering if it is possible to continue developing the same project in Visual Studio for Mac.
To put it in other words: Is it possible to develop ASP.NET MVC applications in Visual Studio for Mac?
I tried to Google this, but I could only find ASP.NET Core MVC projects being discussed for VS for Mac. The current project is NOT a Core project, but just an ASP.NET project.
I really don't want to install Windows either on my MacBook Pro or on an external drive.
As you've correctly surmised, it's not possible to build ASP.NET MVC projects on the Mac that aren't based on .NET Core or Mono. So if your project is currently targetting ASP.NET on .NET Framework 4.x, the you'll either have to stay on Windows:
Use Bootcamp to run Windows on your Mac
Use a Virtual Machine to run Windows inside Mac
Use Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion to run windows applications inside your Mac
Or you can convert your application over to Mono or .NET Core, depending on your dependencies that may be relatively easy, or very hard or anywhere in between.
You could also decide to use Visual Studio Team Services to build your code on a Windows Hosted agent and edit the sources on yoru mac, you'd have to forego the ability to compile or run your code locally.
You can also decide to "rent" a virtual machine in Azure (maybe your have MSDN credits you could use for this purpose?) and remote desktop to that machine to work on your project.
We have built an ASP.NET application in 4.0 (we can change it to 3.5 if necessary) with a SQL Server database.
I am looking to create an installation package (exe or msi) so that I can provide this file to my clients and they can install it on all of their laptops. This asp.net application will be running on laptops that don't have access to the internet.
Some of these laptops have XP Home, Win 7 Home, and other windows operating systems and not all of them have IIS installed. Is there some sort of simple application that I can use to create an Installer application where it will install IIS or some other web server, SQL Express, and .NET framework 4.0. If these applications are installed already, then it shouldn't install it. Any suggestions?

You could accomplish this using a Setup Project in Visual Studio.
I know about Web Deployment Packages. See if that helps in some way.

Background
In the spirit of continuous integration, I'm trying to automate our deployment process using a Web Deployment Project. Mostly, this has been painless. Most options were baked in and those that weren't were easy to add through the MSBuild XML interface.
However, I cannot seem to find an option for deploying to a remote IIS Server. This seems strange to me because I obviously don't want all my builds to run on my production/staging server.
The Question
How can I set up my Web Deployment project to create/overwrite an IIS Virtual Directory on a remote machine?

I am using Visual Studio 2008 and .net 3.0.

As suggested by x0n below, I could use MS Deploy for this. I would rather use a Web Deployment Project though, especially since we already have those set up. :)
Your best bet is to take a look at MS Deploy which is available as a stand-alone package right now at RC level. It ships with a Go-Live license, which means it will be compatible with the version shipping with Visual Studio 2010. Some info:

It's a great tool - will sync remote servers, farms etc picking up missing metabase info, com objects, registry, .net components in bin or gac, databases - the whole hog. It also ships with an interactive shell and powershell cmdlets.
