aspx page won`t load in classic mode - asp.net
I have a website using asp.net 4.0 hosted on IIS.
The website holds inside an http handler which can only be used when the application pool is in classic mode (3rd party handler).
From some reason Im unable to serve my aspx page in classic mode (only in integrated mode).
From what Ive read I guess the issue is in the handlers mapping so here is the list.
The error I get is 404.17 - Not Found
The requested content appears to be script and will not be served by the static file handler
Any suggestion would be much appreciated

this answer mentions and I have confirmed in my app, and that when you configure a third party handler with the configuration "classic" in mind, the configuration must be set under <system.web><httpModules> and <system.web><httpHandlers> while for integrated it goes to <system.webServer><handlers>.
I have also a web app in asp.net 4.0 which we are using MSCaptcha (for captcha). The link i found on how to use it mentioned to use classic mode and the configuration is located inside <httpHandlers>. But, when i included the same configuration under <handlers> i could run my application in integrated mode.
So, could you try copying the configuration you have in httpHandlers regarding your third party handler to the section handlers and try to verify if the handler works in integrated mode? Rather than trying to make it work in classic mode.
Both classic and integrated support .net Framework 2.0 onwards and the framework 1.1 is only available for classic. So you could try otherwise.
I finally found how to solve this.
All this started because I we have a .Net 2 application already running and we needed to move gently to .Net 4. So we used the existing server and for that I needed to figure out all that is needed to add to the website in order for it to work.
I was missing both the aspx and the asmx handlers so I added them using the IIS (you can also add them in the web.config directly - the IIS is easier).
I needed the aspx handlers like this:

The reason for the asmx is that after I added the aspx handlers above I got a message "The request failed with HTTP status 405: Method Not Allowed" which was caused because my aspx page internally calls an asmx which is also hosted on the site.

Can't get handers in IIS to work
I don't know much about IIS configuration at all. I'm running a blog based on Blogengine.net (http://dotnetblogengine.net/) I upgraded it to 2.6 (from 2.0) and was moved by my service provider to a new server that supports .NET 4. The problem is that all http-handlers are not working. I have no direct control over the web server except for the web.config. The support at my service provider has generated a log for me, which gives a bit more details than a 404 when requesting something from a handler. It says HANDLER_PRECONTITION_NOT_MATCH which I suspect could be the cause of this problem. As I said, I don't know much at all about configuration like this, the site work locally when running on IIS7.5 Express, but there seems to be the same problem when using the standard development server. My site has been non working for days now, and I'm running out of options, what to try to do! I have finally solved the problem! the "Pool mode" in my service providers settings was set to classic. I changed it to "integration" and all problems went away :-)
Unable to set up WebDAV with IIS 7
Two symptoms... First, here's the situation: I'm running IIS 7 on a Windows 7 box. I'm trying to set up WebDAV but am running into problems. no means an expert in this area, so I may certainly be wrong). Symptom 2: I have also tried mapping a network drive to my URL, using: net use * http://localhost/ithitwebdavserver01 When I do that, though, I get the following error: System error 67 has occured. The network name cannot be found. I've also tried mapping to the root, like so: net use * http://localhost That gives me the error: System error 1920 has occurred. The file cannot be accessed by the system. I don't know where to begin to figure these problems out. I've spent the last couple of days scouring forums and articles trying to find an answer. If you are trying to login to WebDav in the IIS 7 host where you installed WebDav then note that you also need to install the WebDav redirector: http://www.iis.net/learn/publish/using-webdav/using-the-webdav-redirector. In fact, I am pretty sure this is (was) your issue.
Error 1920 is an error with authentication. More information is available at Windows Noob (scroll down some). Specifically add your local user to the WebDAV Authoring rules. I'm still working on the error 67 myself though.
You may download the latest IT Hit WebDAV .NET Server Wizard and generate simple ASP.NET application (with Visual Studio 2010/2012) to compare web.config with yours.
Modifying Web.Config handlers section generates extra unneeded entries
I've written a command line tool that deploys HTTP Handlers to an applications Web.Config file using a combination of System.Configuration, System.Web.Configuration and Microsoft.Web.Administration since it needs to register the handlers for both Classic and Integrated Modes as I don't know what mode end users will be using for their IIS deployments. and how I can stop it? When I save my configuration opened with System.Web.WebConfigurationManager I use ConfigurationSaveMode.Minimal so any inherited configuration (which is what this appears to be) should not get written. Strangely enough if this is then deleted on subsequent runs of the program this information does not reappear Any ideas/pointers/solutions?
You are probably using Microsoft.Web.Administration, in the code that adds the handler try specifying the index (AddAt) 0 (or -1? I do not remember exactly), but that should prevent that from happening. The reason is because that collection uses semantics of appending the new ones at the top and since you are just calling Add then it forces it to add a copy of the parent to "obey" your code.
