I have some paragraphs in my page. Some are very lengthy while some are very small. I have given common property of column-count : 2 for all the paragraph. But the problem is I don't want to split the paragraph into two if the content is just two or three lines only
Here is my code.
p{
column-count: 2;
}
<h2>First paragraph (needs to be two column)</h2>
<p>Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.</p>
<h2>Second one (no need of column)</h2>
<p>Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the </p>
Here my first paragraph is lengthy and I want that to be shown as two columns.
But my second paragraph is too small and I don't want that to be in two columns.
Here is a Demo of minimal working code.
Note: I can't predict which paragraph will be lengthy, which one will be small. It's coming from the server.
Edit: Since I'm having more than 100 paragraphs in my actual code, I prefer to resolve this using CSS only (If possible)
You have to do this with JavasScript. CSS cannot be conditionally enabled or disabled based on the word count of the content it's styling.
Of course, it doesn't have to be JS on the client. You could add the class short-paragraph on your server too.
JS
function letterCount(element) {
return element.textContent.length;
}
function isShort(element) {
return letterCount(element) < 200;
}
Array.prototype.slice
.call(document.getElementsByTagName('p')).forEach(paragraph => {
if (isShort(paragraph)) {
paragraph.classList.add('short-paragraph')
}
});
CSS
p {
column-count: 2;
}
p.short-paragraph {
column-count: 1;
}
Here's a working Fiddle.
Speed
Based on OP' reply, speed might be an issue. Here's a quick benchmark with 500 paragraphs (check the console). My old laptop makes it in 5ms, so it should not be an issue.
.odd {
column-count: 1;
}
.even {
column-count: 2;
}

<p class="even">Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Nice and simple, Create an odd and even class for your paragraphs and then style to your liking. Whichever Paragraphs you dont want to have two columns just assign them the odd class.

I created a text with contenteditable area but I faced a problem : I want contenteditable area to have min width so user will see area even after deleting text in it that's why I used display:inline-block but the contenteditable area does not break to next line it expand only and when I remove display:inline-block the contenteditable area break to next line when reach the end of the line but I can not use min width so if the user delete the text in contenteditable area it just disappear so you need to rreload the page .So how can I have them both ?
span.a{
display:inline-block;
min-width:20px;
border:1px solid black;
}
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.
Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, <span class="a" contenteditable="true" >AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA </span> took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.
It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.
It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages,
and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
One idea is to keep the element inline and consider the :empty pseudo class to add some padding when there is not content. Doing so you will be sure the area will always be visible:
span.a {
border: 1px solid black;
}
span.a:empty {
padding-left:10px;
}

I'm not quite sure if this is possible with CSS and couldn't find anything in that direction, but I'll give it a go:
In a (Flex)-Container I want multiple(2-3) boxes/columns of text. Each column is it's own article with it's own headline, so it's not one text continuing on to the next column.
However I want the width of said columns to be flexible, so that no column wastes empty space right until the end. If a column would have empty lines, it will try to decrease it's width to create more line breaks for itself and fill that void, while the other boxes get more width to maybe decrease in number of text lines.
In any case, all columns should try to get to the same amount of Lines of Text and thus the same height of content through increasing/decreasing their width space.
/Edit: A code Example I quickly made based on https://www.w3schools.com/css/tryit.asp?filename=trycss3_flexbox_flex-wrap_nowrap8
As you will see, both flex Boxes will keep 50% width, even if one is much fuller than the other. I'd want them to rearrange width automatically to avoid the empty space below the text. With less width to the first box it would have more line breaks, while the second one with more width would have less line breaks. The goal is to have as little difference in lines of text count as possible.

Using Bootstrap 4 and Flexbox, how would you accomplish a 2 column layout with a fixed-width left column and a flexible right column?
I don't see anything in the docs about how to achieve this... I could do it easily enough using vanilla CSS, but I feel like I should use Bootstrap since I'm already pulling it in.

Lets say I have div a, which contains n div elements n..b,c; I would like that div a would get scroll bars for every single element (overflow: scroll), except for element c which should be overflow: visible.
Can I do this using only CSS?
To make things more clear to you this is what I am trying to achieve https://jsfiddle.net/gm6cgyqp/ except the fact that fixed is not responding to scroll. I am trying to achieve same feeling as native select using bootstrap dropdown and this is how i met that kind of an issue.
Yes, It can be done. Set max-height and max-width to the div for which you want the scrollbar.
.wrap {
width: 100%;
}
.a,
.b,
.c,
.d {
max-width: 20%;
overflow: scroll;
display: inline-block;
max-height: 100px;
}
.e {
overflow: visible;
width: 20%;
}
