Title and Subtitle getting mixed up - css

I have a title and subtitle displaying in a div.
I am facing an issue when either of the title or subtitle are longer they get mixed up otherwise with shorter titles and subtitles its not an issue.
To display the title my css is
.sch-task-name {
margin: 5px 0;
}
and to display subtitle
.sch-tool-text-activity {
position: relative;
top: -44px;
font-size: 13px;
margin-left: 1px;
color: blue;
}
.sch-task-inner {
height: inherit;
overflow: hidden;
padding: 27px 2px 7px 8px;
}
.sch-tool-ct {
float: left;
width: 100%;
margin-top: 7px;
padding-right: 20px;
}
html
<div class="sch-task-inner">
<span class="sch-task-name"> Ticket Under Needs Information 2</span>
<div class="sch-tool-ct">
<span class="sch-tool-text-activity">Kanban Deliverable</span>
</div>
</div>
Here sch-task-name displays title and sch-tool-text-activity displays subtitle.
I am new to css and dont know much of it.
Would appreciate any help!Thanks in advance!

If your goal is to get sch-task-name to display underneath sch-tool-text-activity without rearranging the content in the HTML, then you may want to use the order property of flexible items.
You'll need to set the parent container's display to 'display:flex' first. Then, since you want them to stack, you'll have to allow the items to flow onto multiple links by setting 'flex-wrap:wrap' (still on the parent container). Lastly, you'll set the order of the spans to 'order:1' and 'order:2' to rearrange their order, with '1' displaying first.
Updated fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/ph0rn16w/1/
.sch-task-name {
margin: 5px 0;
font-size:20pt;
order:2;
}
.sch-tool-text-activity {
position: relative;
//top: -44px;
font-size: 13px;
margin-left: 1px;
color: blue;
}
.sch-task-inner {
height: inherit;
overflow: hidden;
padding: 27px 2px 7px 8px;
display:flex;
flex-wrap:wrap;
}
.sch-tool-ct {
float: left;
width: 100%;
margin-top: 7px;
padding-right: 20px;
order:1;
}

allowing dropdown to overflow outside of div and extend as far as it needs

I am using the react-multi-carousel library in conjuction with the react select library like this:
import Carousel from "react-multi-carousel";
import "react-multi-carousel/lib/styles.css";
<Carousel
swipeable={false}
draggable={false}
showDots={true}
responsive={responsive}
ssr={true} // means to render carousel on server-side.
infinite={true}
autoPlaySpeed={1000}
keyBoardControl={true}
customTransition="all .5"
transitionDuration={500}
containerClass="carousel-container"
removeArrowOnDeviceType={["tablet", "mobile"]}
dotListClass="custom-dot-list-style"
itemClass="carousel-item-padding-40-px"
centerMode={true}
renderDotsOutside={true}
>
{dmtfs.map((fl) => <div>{(ivrDests.length !== 0) && <StoryCarouselItem key={fl.value} dest_id={fl.value} ivr_dests={ivrDests} options={props.options} />}</div>)}
</Carousel>
StoryCarouselItem rendering:
return (
<div className="StoryCarouselItem">
<div className="StoryCarouselItemCounter">
<div className="StoryCarouselItemCounterText">
{dtmf}
</div>
</div>
<div className="StoryCarouselItemName">
{name}
</div>
<div className="StoryDropdown">
<Select styles={customStyles}
options={props.options}
placeholder={IVRSound}
value={selectedIVROption}
onChange={updateIVR}
/>
</div>
</div>
The code above works fine and looks good before dropping down as you can see below:
Carousel
However, when I click the dropdown, it does not overflow outside of the div and spill into other sections to reveal the whole dropdown like I want it to. Instead, it gets caught within the dropdown and only shows a little bit.
Example:
Carousel 2
Any idea how I can change the styling to accommodate this change?
Here's the relevant styling I have right now:
.StorySelection{
color: #392F5A;
font-family: 'Poppins';
font-weight: 700;
font-size: 20px;
margin-top: 5%;
}
.StoryCarousel{
margin-top: 5%;
padding-bottom: 10%;
padding-left: 5%;
padding-right: 5%;
}
.StoryCarouselBorder{
background: #fff;
border-style: solid;
border-color: #ABABAB;
border-width: 10px;
padding-top: 2.3%;
padding-bottom: 1.3%;
}
.StoryCarouselItem{
height: 20%;
width: 75%;
margin-top: 5%;
background: #392F5A;
}
.StoryCarouselItemCounter {
margin-top: 10%;
height: 60px;
width: 60px;
background-color: #EEC8E0;
border-radius: 50%;
display: inline-block;
}
.StoryCarouselItemCounterText{
color: #fff;
font-size: 24px;
text-align: center;
margin-top: 20%;
}
.StoryCarouselItemName {
color: #fff;
margin-top: 8%;
}
.StoryDropdown{
padding-bottom: 10%;
z-index: 20;
overflow: visible;
}
.react-multi-carousel-dot-list {
position: static !important;
margin-top: 1% !important;
margin-bottom: 0 !important;
}
Use the menuPortalTaget prop to portal the menu. This will allow it to overflow outside of the div. Other than that you may require a custom MenuList component to adjust the listing styling.

Div tag border with title

I need to display a border around a div tag with a title in the border itself. In order to do this, this is what I have come up with so far
.componentWrapper {
border: solid cadetblue;
border-radius: 40px;
padding: 10px;
width: 95%;
}
.componentTitle {
font-size: 18px;
width: 15%;
background-color: white;
margin-top: -25px;
}
<div class='componentWraper'><p class='componentTitle'>This is the title</p>This is the component body text</div>
As you can see I am using margin property to push the title up on top of the border. I am not sure if this is the proper approach to do this and I have the following questions.
I am positioning the title using pixels (margin) and a fixed value (-25px). This is a site that has to work on mobile phones, tablets as well. Is this an acceptable approach?
I am setting the background-color to white so that the border does not appear behind the text, is this an ok approach?
Is there a better and more acceptable way to do this, I do not want to use fieldset because we have little control over the border (border-radius).
There are three logical ways you can use to achieve this.
You can use a <fieldset> with a legend which is the basic HTML way of doing this. You can find more information about this here.
Use custom CSS with positioning, not negative margins or etc.:
body {
background: #fff;
}
.componentWraper {
margin: 40px; /* just for contrast */
position: relative;
border: 2px solid tomato;
border-radius: 12px;
padding: 20px;
}
.componentWraper .componentTitle {
position: absolute;
top: -25px;
background: #fff;
padding: 0 10px;
}
<div class='componentWraper'>
<p class='componentTitle'>This is the title</p>This is the component body text</div>
Use custom CSS with pseudo-elements:
body {
background: #fff;
}
.componentWraper {
margin: 40px; /* just for contrast */
position: relative;
border: 2px solid tomato;
border-radius: 12px;
padding: 20px;
}
.componentWraper::before {
content: 'This is the title';
position: absolute;
top: -10px;
padding: 0 10px;
background: #fff;
}
<div class='componentWraper'>This is the component body text</div>
I think you're on the right track. I'd make a few changes to have more control over the styling. You can use ems or pixels.
Wrap the title and content in a new div and give that a negative margin:
<div class='componentWrapper'>
<div>
<div class='componentTitle'>This is the title</div>
<div class='componentContent'>
<p>This is the component body text</p>
</div>
</div>
.componentWrapper div {
margin-top: -1em;
}
Set your title to display: inline-block and use padding to control the white space around it (instead of using width)
.componentTitle {
font-size: 18px;
background-color: white;
display: inline-block;
padding: .5em;
}
codepen
snippet:
.componentWrapper {
border: solid cadetblue;
border-radius: 40px;
padding: 10px;
width: 95%;
margin-top: 1em;
}
.componentWrapper div {
margin-top: -1.2em;
}
.componentTitle {
font-size: 18px;
background-color: white;
display: inline-block;
padding: .5em .3em;
}
<div class='componentWrapper'>
<div>
<div class='componentTitle'>This is the title</div>
<div class='componentContent'>
<p>This is the component body text</p>
</div>
</div>
This is what I came up with. I wanted to get rid of the negative margin, but couldn't figure out a way to do that.
See the Pen offset title by Yvonne Aburrow (#vogelbeere) on CodePen.
HTML
<div class="componentWrapper">This is the component body text</div>
CSS
.componentWrapper {
border: 1px solid blue;
border-radius: 40px;
padding: 16px;
width: 95%;
margin: 3em;
}
.componentWrapper:before {
content: "this is the title";
font-size: 18px;
width: 10%;
background-color: white;
border: 1px solid blue;
border-radius: 12px;
display: block;
margin-top: -29px;
padding: 3px;
}
I am not sure how a screen reader would deal with the title text being in the CSS (or how you would scale that up if you have a lot of different titles.

I have 2 questions based on the linked(or above) code.
The 5 container div's width was set as:
.itemnumber 6%, .userprofile 14%, .nameandcredit 45%, .ranktitle 15%, .usercredit 20%. So in total they are 100%. But as you see, the last one .usercredit is not in the same line and there're margins between each div, which is not what I want.
for the .username, I have set overflow:hidden, but as you see, when there's a large string, the .username was totally disappeared. If there're spaces in the string, it will only hide the overflow part and show the front part. I want to know what's the problem?
I know it's a little bit messed up of a lot code here. But my question is as listed as above. Thanks in advance for any kind suggestion.
For the spacing, you have two problems:
Implicit spaces between inline-block elements, and
Defining widths for elements with padding.
Regarding username overflow, you have one issue:
Default word wrapping behavior is to wrap the whole word to the next line. You need to change that behavior.
Let's take a look at each of them:
Implicit Spaces
The problem is that your divs have a display: inline-block; style. Elements displayed as an inline-block have any white-space between them converted to a single space.
See the "Fighting the Space Between Inline Block Elements" article on CSS Tricks for more information on how to overcome this.
One fix, for instance, is to have the li element that is wrapping the divs to have a 0 font-size, and reset a non-zero font size to its children, e.g. in your CSS:
.font-size-0 {
font-size: 0;
}
.font-size-0 > * {
font-size: 12px;
}
Any of the links outlined in the link above would work; for example, removing spaces and newlines between your closing tag and opening tag would do the same thing, without forcing you to set and reset the font-size.
Widths for elements with padding
In CSS, a width is defined by default for an element to include only its content area (box-sizing: content-box; by default) and not the padding. Set the box-sizing to border-box and you'll be all set.
E.g.
.font-size-0 > div {
box-sizing: border-size;
}
Properly wrapping a single word without spaces
See this StackOverflow answer to see how to address the issue. You will basically need to add this to your .username rule:
.username {
...
word-wrap:break-word;
}

Issue placing div after facebook friends box

Every time I include the code for the facebook friends like box the div element box below it goes wacky. I cannot control where its positioned. It either disappears or overlaps a different div. Originally I just wanted specials, events, then fbFriends in a row then the box div below the three divs. I have been trying to wrap the divs to control everything better but am still unsuccessful. Any help would be appreciated
specials events fbFriends
box -------------------box
<div id="specialsWrapper">
<div id="specials" ><p>Featured Specials</p></div>
<div id="events" ><p>What's happening at the hub</p></div>
<div id="fbFriends">

data-height="395" data-width="250" data-show-faces="true"
data-colorscheme="dark" data-stream="false" data-header="true" />
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div id="box" ></div>
#specialsWrapper

Here's anwser for your question
EXAMPLE ON CODEPEN
Your build of these box's is weird thats why I had to use top: 40px; with position: relative;
btw. that's how you do on jsfiddle or codepen exampl, thats all community ask. Spend 5 min for your question isnt much to ask?
hope thats help.
EDIT:
I found what what the issue, you didnt closed specialsWrapper div thats why margin dint work.
I also cancel margin-botton from boxes inside specialWrapper and put overflow: auto to specialWrapper to countheight.
Now top: no need to be writen.
I think what you might want it display: inline-block; but without something to see I can't really know what's going on. And your description isn't enough. Could you post what's going on on js.fiddle.net or give us an example site?

How can I allow div to float outside the main container

I am working on WP using a template and I'm trying to get a button to float outside the main container. I went through some already posted questions here, but no luck.
I have tried with padding, margin, overflow, etc. The one thing that seems to work is by setting negative margin, but in that case the div is hidden by the main container.
Here's the HTML:
<div class="purchase_options_meta clearfix">
<div class="purchase_options">
<div id="deal_attributes_wrap" class="section ">
</div>
<div class="buy_button gb_ff font_x_large">
</div>
</div>
</div>
And here's the CSS I'm using:
.container.main {
width: 980px;
padding: 20px;
overflow: visible;
}
.purchase_options {
position: relative;
}
.buy_button {
position: absolute;
background: url(http://topgreekgyms.fitnessforum.gr/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Button12.png) no-repeat center;
color: white;
height: 100px;
width: 375px;
left: -54px;
top: -16px;
}
.button {
background-color: transparent;
color: #ffffff;
}
.button:hover {
background-color: transparent;
color: #cccccc;
}
.buy_button a {
font-weight: bold;
font-size: 29px;
font-family: arial;
padding: 12px;
display: block;
white-space: nowrap;
position: relative;
margin: 15px 0 0 50px;
}
.buy_button a span {
position: absolute;
right: 33px;
padding: 0 5px;
}
And here's a link to the page. My problem is with the top red button at the left.
I would greatly appreciate any help!
Just in case that helps someone in the future:
I had to add this part of CSS in my code:
#deal_single.clearfix:after {
clear: both !important;
}
Just to be more specific '#deal_single' is the page id.
