How to add Development Server Authentication settings in source control? - asp.net

Given the following
Visual Studio 2015
An ASP.NET Web Application (.csproj project)
.NET 4.5.2
IIS Express is enabled to debug and run the site
Source control in TFS
When I enable the property Development Server > Windows Authentication, the setting cannot be persisted in source control.
Is there a way to configure this setting so that it is applied when retrieving the solution from Source Control?
Workaround: every developer has to enable this individually.
Note: this setting is stored in applicationhost.config

This setting is saved in .vs/config/applicationHost.config. Without checking this file to your source code control, the setting won't be shared. But of course, if you check it in, then all other settings (like bindings/ports) are also shared, and it might lead to other issues.
Mostly caused by IIS Express design, and have to get used to it.

IIS7 MVC Routing Not Working

Our company ships an MVC based product (targeting v4.5) which has stopped working on a customer site for what appear to be environmental issues - a build which worked with no problems once upon a time now gives a 403.14 - The Web server is configured to not list the contents of this directory.

What I think is happening...
The user accesses http://server/AppName
Because it's an MVC app, the default route (Reports/Index) should be used.
Instead IIS is looking for a default document...
... and, not finding one, it assumes the user wants to list the contents of the directory...
...which is not enabled so it throws a 403.14.

What I've tried so far...
Accessing the route directly.. results in 404 error. So I'm pretty
sure IIS doesn't realise it should use routing.
Use aspnet_regiis to register ASP.Net with IIS. This was done from the Framework64 folder since...
OS is 64 bit - Windows Server 2008 (Standard without Hyper-V)
IIS is 64 bit - though Enable 32-Bit Applications is true
Checked AppPool is targeting v4 of the framework - it is.
Changed AppPool mode to Classic - was pretty sure it should be integrated but was worth ruling it out. It is now back to Integrated
Confirmed RunAllManagedModulesForAllRequests is set to true in the web.config.
Checked permission conditions defined in <system.webServer> section of web.config are met - they are.
Created the simplest of MVC applications and deployed it - same problem.
Running the command shell as Administrator unregistered ASP.Net using aspnet_regiis -ua and re-registered using aspnet_regiis -enable -i. We hit a couple of permission problems - and the Temporary ASP.NET Files directory was missing but once they were address we were back to the same error.
Added a simple default.htm - when present, this is served in response to the http://server/AppName request.
I'm clean out of ideas and all google hits suggest some combination of the above - or enabling directory browsing (which I think is just a symptom rather than the root cause).
Also, not sure if it's relevant but the amount of configurable elements available for the application in IIS seems a bit below what I would have expected...
Have you Checked the user the application pool process is running under? I think Your site needs to run with permissions to execute the .net libraries and I've seen this just change for seemingly no reason (probably related to an overzealous update to the system).
You can try with the Enabling directory browsing .
assuming you are under Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2
On the taskbar, click Server Manager.
In Server Manager, click the Manage menu, and then click Add Roles
and Features.

installation type and click Next. Select the destination server and

if you using the Windows PC try this in your command prompt as follows:
go to C:\Program Files\IIS Express
then press Enter:appcmd set config
/section:system.webServer/directoryBrowse /enabled

SQL Server Reporting Services creates a folder called Reports by
default if you install it on IIS. If you install SQL 2008 then
Reporting Services doesn't need to use IIS and instead will try to
reserve the URL with the HTTP.Sys service.
I believe this is the cause of the conflict you are seeing. What you
could try is changing the URL that Reporting Services uses via the SQL
Server Configuration Wizard.
Also I found that
Report Manager of SQL Server can use reports path http://<server name>/reports

I think the problem is IIS features that are not installed yet. I have met this kind of problem frequently in Windows Pro. Make sure to turn on every feature under Internet Information Service -> World Wide Services because by default IIS is configured to use WebForms. So there might be some features that not installed yet to use MVC, especially ISAPI filters. In my case, that was the solution. I hope it helps.
Something similar i encountered using VS 2017 & ASP.NET MVC.
Was working on the project for long with no problems at all but suddenly the routing started misbehaving & stopped working.
So I changed the Port in Project Properties Page & it started working.
I really don't know what is the relation between a port & MVC routing modules. Someone else can enlighten if at all this helps.
I had the same problem and I just created an application pool out of the Default Web Site in IIS and stoped the default web site. With that difference you will not have the application pool's path
I know it's been a long time since this question but i've had the same problema recently. I've tried every single configuration, just like #amcdermott did, but the only action that solve the problem was reinstalling .NET Framework.
My app was built under .NET Framework 4.5.2. The application server had the version 4.6.1 and 4.5.2 installed. So, i uninstalled all framework versions and installed the one that i needed.
Please, make sure that no other applications use superior versions of .NET Framework if you going to try this solution.

.cshtml files displaying as plain html

I am having a problem setting up a website hosted on Windows Server 2012. The website is just the default website you get when setting up a new "ASP.NET Web Site (Razor v2)" site. Then I simply published it using the "Publish Web Site" option in VS2012. I have also added the .cshtml extension in the MIME types. The server is running IIS v8 and .NET v4. The problem is when I visit the website this is how it displays:

Is there anything I am missing?
Items to check:
rarely do MIME Types actually matter if IIS and ASP.Net are installed properly
don't mis-interpret this statement, I'm not saying MIME types don't matter, just that if/when configured properly all of this, IIS/ASP.Net is "out of the box" without mucking with MIME types.
The issue with adding ".cshtml" manually is that IIS will (now) serve it, but the ASP.Net engine isn't (necessarily "there" for) handling it (e.g. integrated mode). That's why you're seeing the "unparsed" (raw) version of the file...code and all...it's all IIS (no ASP.net engine is configured to handle it).
if you run your own box, run Web Platform Installer - and it should give you insight on what's installed vs. what's not. Pay attention to ASP.Net bits and versions. You may need to (re)register ASP.Net
if you're hosted, just because your host has .Net Framework 4.x installed, doesn't mean they have all the bits and pieces of ASP.Net installed as well. Ask your host for guidance instead of doing a guessing game. I often have to "load" things that my dev machine has "by default" (of course its my machine) because I end up with non-functioning stuff when deployed to my host. You're not even getting an ASP.Net engine error, so that's a sure sign ASP.Net needs some work.
Nuget is excellent for this task. Some items that might be necessary to be "bin deployed" (aka. you have to add them to your deployment/upload to /bin directory on your host):

Microsoft ASP.NET Web Pages
Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure

Using ASP.NET authentication / authorization with Cassini development server

I've just run into one of the problems of using the integrated dev server (Cassini) in VS and would like to see if there are any solutions.
We're using asp.net authentication to secure the site. However, Cassini runs in integrated pipeline mode, meaning that requests for all files go through the asp.net isapi. The result of this is that it's securing files that would otherwise not be secured in a production environment (.htm .js .css etc..).
Now I understand that we can run the project on a local IIS instance, but we would like to avoid this if possible. But, because of the problem above, this is looking like the only solution.
Does anybody have any ideas about how to get Cassini working with authentication that can be easily moved to a production environment when ready. (I'd also like to avoid having a different development web.config that specifically allows access to these files).
We're using VS2010 by the way.

Instead of using Cassini, you can download and install IIS Express:
IIS Express is a lightweight, self-contained version of IIS optimized for developers. IIS Express makes it easy to use the most current version of IIS to develop and test websites. It has all the core capabilities of IIS 7 as well as additional features designed to ease website development
You can wire up to the HttpApplication.PostAuthenticateRequest event in your global.asax or an IHttpModule. PostAuthenticateRequest event on MSDN
In the event handler, check the file extension for the one that you want to be unsecured. If the file extension is a match then give set the HttpContext.User to an IPrincipal instance that has the roles required for accessing a file in the specified directory.

IIS7 VB6 Debugging

I recently upgraded from XP to Win 7. I used to be able to debug from an ASP classic app into VB6. However I now get a:
"The call to Server.CreateObject failed while checking permissions. Access is denied to this object"
This only occurrs when I start the dll in VB6 and access the ASP application. Prior to IIS7 this would allow you to step into the VB6 dll. Any ideas?
I have recently had the same experience going from WinXP to Win7 in our dev environment and had have exactly the same grief with some of our legacy apps. Here's how I fixed it.
To be clear, our Classic ASP website makes calls off to our in-house VB6 .dlls and it was these .dll files that I wanted to be able to step into and debug.
Enable 32-bit applications
In the Application Pools section, right click on the website's application pool and select 'Advanced Settings'.
Change the 'Enable 32-bit Applications' to 'True'.
Change the 'Managed Pipeline Mode' to 'Classic'.
ASP Authentication
As #GregWoods has suggested, check the authentication details of the website in IIS, As follows:
Anonymous Authentication – DISABLED
ASP.Net Impersonation – DISABLED
Basic Authentication – ENABLED
Forms Authentication – DISABLED
Windows Authentication – ENABLED
Run the VB6 application inside the Visual Basic IDE and open a web browser; navigate to the website and when the code enters the external VB6 .dll, the Visual Basic 6 environment should now stop on the breakpoints set in your code. Ta da.
A step more??
I also wanted to be able to debug the actual Classic ASP pages themselves from within VS2010 or VS2012... which is entirely possible too, but there's an extra step to add to this list, simply to instruct IIS to :
In IIS, click on the website that created earlier and in the Features view, click on ‘ASP’.
Expand the ‘Debugging Properties’ option group.
Change the ‘Enable Client-side Debugging’ to ‘True’.
Change the ‘Enable Server-side Debugging’ to ‘True’.
Click ‘Apply’ to save. (Top right corner of the Actions pane).
Then, in order to make Visual Studio stop on a breakpoint, you have to Attach to Process:
Go to the 'TOOLS' menu, and select 'Attach to Process...'
Change the 'Attach to' option to 'Automatic: Native code'
Select the 'w3wp.exe' process and click 'Attach'.
Now, when you open the website in your chosen browser and nabigate to your website, IIS and VS2010/VS2012 will work in conjunction and Visual Studio will stop on any break points.

I've just run into the same problem, and after applying the above 'fixes', still had a problem. I found that making sure that the web application has Anonymous authentication turned off (I used Windows authentication instead) finally allowed me to debug vb6 from classic ASP.
From this I cannot whether the registry entry, or the DCOM permissions change (both from q259725), contributed to the fix.

Cruisecontrol.NET & IIS7 Static File Handler Problem

I'm trying to get Cruisecontrol.NET running with Server 2008/IIS7 and when I try and navigate to the dashboard I get the following error:
HTTP Error 404.17 - Not Found
The requested content appears to be script and will not be served by the static file handler.
I'm a bit lost in IIS7 so it could be something pretty straightforward. They (cc.net) do some funny stuff with http handlers in the web.config which may be related to the problem:

Is the dashboard set up as an application in IIS?
I've not used IIS7, but I know in IIS6 you need to enable an application and assign it to an app pool before you can run ASPX code.
EDIT: This works in IIS6.
Open the IISAdmin tool on the web server. Expand the web sites folder. Find the virtual directory (directories?) for CruiseControl. Right-click on it and look at properties. On the directory tab, create a new application and give it a suitable name. Enable the application to execute "scripts only". Assign it to an application pool (you may want to create a new one just for this application -- consult the help documentation for this). You may also need to change the ASP.NET version You can do this on the ASP.NET tab -- choose either v1.1 or v2.0, whichever CruiseControl requires.
In Vista, go to Windows features in the control panel. there is a section there for IIS and you will find the scripting setting under the IIS 6 compatibility section
I just had this same issue when I installed CCNET 1.5 under Windows 7/IIS 7.5
You need to configure the app pool for the ccnet site. Under the Basic Settings for the application pool, set 'Managed pipeline mode' to 'Integrated'.
