I am attempting to create a GUI for the front end of a program that will be used in my office. I have been tasked to use Scene Builder 8 to help create said GUI. This is my first project using JavaFX and Scene Builder so I've had to learn everything from scratch. My problem is that the while the code isn't throwing me any errors, I cannot see the sample data that I've put into the program. It's making me question the program as a whole.
If some of the following code looks superfluous to you, it may be because development for the backend part of the program is happening at the same time by a different person.
Here is the Mainapp:

Here is what I'm seeing when I run the program (minus the image on top, I've gotten rid of it for a little anonymity):

What I need to see is list items populating that white square in the middle.
Any help anyone can give me at all would be greatly appreciated.

I have a strange situation where the bidirectional binding between a ComboBox and an IntegerProperty consistently broken after a System.gc() call. Somehow, everything works as expected if I use ObjectProperty.
I attached all the code below. When the application start running, the label properly shows the corresponding selected values of ComboBox1 and ComboBox2. But once the GC button is clicked, the bidirectional binding between ComboBox1 and fubar.mID1 property is broken.
I understand the bidirectional binding is a weak one and gc cleans it once the objects is out of scope. But here none of the object went out of scope. Why?
Here is MainController.java:
package sample;
import javafx.beans.binding.Bindings;
import javafx.fxml.FXML;
import javafx.scene.control.ComboBox;
import javafx.scene.control.Label;
import javafx.util.StringConverter;
public class MainController {
private final Fubar fubar = new Fubar(1, 2);
#FXML

#FXML
ComboBox<Integer> mComboBox2;
#FXML
Label mLabel;
#FXML

#Override
public String toString(Integer integer) {
if (integer == null)
return "";
switch (integer) {
case 1:

case 2:
return "Two";

return "";
}
}
#Override
public Integer fromString(String s) {
if (s == null)
return 0;
switch (s) {
case "One":
return 1;
case "Two":
return 2;
default:
return 0;
}
}
});
for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++)
mComboBox1.getItems().add(i);
mComboBox1.valueProperty().bindBidirectional(fubar.getID1Property().asObject());
mComboBox2.setConverter(mComboBox1.getConverter());
for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++)
mComboBox2.getItems().add(i);
mComboBox2.valueProperty().bindBidirectional(fubar.getID2Property());
mLabel.textProperty().bind(Bindings.createStringBinding(() ->
fubar.getID1Property().get() + "/" + fubar.getID2Property().get(),
fubar.getID1Property(), fubar.getID2Property()));
}

Aha, I figured it out. The problem was at the fubar.getID1Property().asObject(). I believe java treats this asObject() as a temporary object. The temporary object goes out of scope right away, and System.gc() call simply clear the temporary object and destroys the binding.
To fix this problem, one need to retain the reference to this asObject(). One way to do this in my own sample problem is to declare a field ObjectProperty<Integer> middleMan in the controller and initialize it as
ObjectProperty<Integer> middleMan = fubar.getID1Property().asObject(); and then bind mCombobox1.valueProperty() to this middleMan.

The challenge is to make the Image captured by the web cam to display in profilPic ImageView on the AddParent FXML Layout.
My brain is about to explode. I am pretty new to java, so far self-taught but I really want to get this code to work. I am also not the best at making sense of the java docs.
I am trying to create a gameloop where the user can freely traverse the switch statement by clicking the buttons.
However, previously, when my gameloop method was called, it ran the code with the current settings without letting me use the buttons to traverse the switch statement.
I think this was because my "choice" variable did not have an action listener attached to it (because a listener will make the program sit on the item, waiting for something to happen?). Unfortunately, my choice variable was a String variable and you cannot attach an actionlistener to a String variable.
Now I tried using the StringProperty class to create a string object to be able to attach an action listener to it.
But now I don't even know how to use StringProperty with switch statement and I just feel like I am on the wrong track.
Does it make sense what I am trying to accomplish?
Can anybody help me create a gameloop where the user can freely traverse the switch statement by clicking the buttons?
♥♥♥!

Registering listeners in the button event handlers is nonsense. Using listeners to modify the property they listen to is even worse. Passing a property as argument for a switch will not even compile.
In this case the smallest modification to make this work would be registering a single listener in the initialize method, calling the gameloop method from this listener and using the value stored in the property as argument for the switch.
#Override
public void initialize(URL location, ResourceBundle resources) {
question = "0";
gameloop();
choiceProperty().addListener((observable, oldValue, newValue) -> gameloop());
}
...
#FXML
private void button1() {
setChoice("c1");
}
...
public void gameloop() {
switch (question) {
case "0":
switch (choice.get()) {
...
}
...
}
}
Note however you'll get a LOT of repeated code this way. Better come up with a data structure to store the game data instead of hardcoding everything.
E.g.
public class GameData {
private final ReadOnlyObjectWrapper<Question> question;
public ReadOnlyObjectProperty<Question> questionProperty() {
return question.getReadOnlyProperty();
}
public Question getQuestion() {
return question.get();
}

public Map<Integer, Question> getQuestions() {
return questions;
}
public GameData(int initialQuestion, Map<Integer, Question> questions) {
this.questions = questions;
this.question = new ReadOnlyObjectWrapper(questions.get(initialQuestion));
}
public void activateChoice(Choice choice) {
question.set(questions.get(choice.getNextQuestion()));
}
}
public class Question {
private final String text;
public String getText() {

public Question(String text, Choice... choices) {

public List<Choice> getChoices() {

Currently I am learning how to use Bindings and Binding-Events properly. I already read a chapter of a book about it and in general I have no problem in using Bindings.
For testing my knowledge, I wrote a little JavaFX8 Application. I got 2 TextFields, but at the moment I am focusing on one TextField, called "firstName". I am using a BooleanBinding. Whenever the TextField is getting filled, the BooleanBinding is set to "true". If there's no Input in the Field, the BooleanBinding is set to "false". My goal is to update Label called "statusLabel", whenever the BooleanBinding got changed.
This is how the binding looks:
BooleanBinding nameEntered = firstName.textProperty().isNotEmpty();
This is my ChangeListener:
nameEntered.addListener((o, oldValue, newValue) -> {
statusLabel.setText(newValue.toString());
});
For a short amount of time, the Listener is working properly. When the BooleanBinding got changed, the Label is getting updated. But after some input changes (deleting the input, filling again etc...) the Label isn't getting updated anymore. Any ideas how to fix this?
Here is the full code:

This is really a duplicate of JavaFX Beans Binding suddenly stops working: the problem is that the binding is getting "prematurely garbage collected" because there are no live references to it that are retained. Forcing the reference to be retained in a controller seems to be a little tricky.
First note that if you actually bind a property of a UI element (which is necessarily in scope as long as it is displayed), then the UI element indirectly keeps a reference to the binding. Consequently in your code this will fix the problem:
statusLabel.textProperty().bind(nameEntered.asString());
(instead of the listener you currently have). If you can't actually use a binding, then it seems that first you need to get the controller to retain a reference to the binding:
public class LayoutController implements Initializable {
// existing code...
private BooleanBinding nameEntered ;
public void initialize(URL url, ResourceBundle rb) {
nameEntered = firstName.textProperty().isNotEmpty();
nameEntered.addListener((o, oldValue, newValue) -> {
statusLabel.setText(newValue.toString());
});
}
}
and then additionally you need to force an reference to the controller itself to stay in scope:
public class MainView extends Application{
private LayoutController controller ;
#Override
public void start(Stage primaryStage) throws Exception {
FMXLLoader loader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("Layout.fxml"));
Parent root = loader.load();
controller = loader.getController();
Scene scene = new Scene(root);
primaryStage.setScene(scene);
primaryStage.setTitle("Benutzerauswahl");
primaryStage.show();
}
public static void main(String args[]){
launch(args);
}
}
There may be a more obvious way to do this, but I can't find one that works.
