Currently only Chromium 105+ supports Container queries out of the box, though Safari 16 will include support as well. Hopefully it won't be much longer before we see a robust cross-browser implementation of such a system. It's been a grueling wait, but I'm glad that it's no longer something we simply have to accept as an insurmountable limitation of CSS due to cyclic dependencies or infinite loops or what have you (these are still a potential issue in some aspects of the proposed design, but I have faith that the CSSWG will find a way).

They are designed to work based on devices or media types (hence why they are called media queries). width, height, and other dimension-based media features all refer to the dimensions of either the viewport or the device's screen in screen-based media. They cannot be used to refer to a certain element on a page.
If you need to apply styles depending on the size of a certain div element on your page, you'll have to use JavaScript to observe changes in the size of that div element instead of media queries.
Alternatively, with more modern layout techniques introduced since the original publication of this answer such as flexbox and standards such as custom properties, you may not need media or element queries after all. Djave provides an example.

A Media Query inside of an iframe can function as an element query. I've successfully implement this. The idea came from a recent post about Responsive Ads by Zurb. No Javascript!
This is currently not possible with CSS alone as #BoltClock wrote in the accepted answer, but you can work around that by using JavaScript.
I created a container query (aka element query) polyfill to solve this kind of issue. It works a bit different than other scripts, so you don’t have to edit the HTML code of your elements. All you have to do is include the script and use it in your CSS like so:

If your container's width is a percentage of the screen then you can use media queries to style depending on your container's width, as you will now know for each screen's dimensions what is your container's dimensions. For example, let's say you decide to make your container's 50% of the screen width. Then for a screen width of 1200px you know that your container is 600px

Just create a wrapper <div> with a percentage value for padding-bottom, like this:

It will result in a <div> with height equal to 75% of the width of its container (a 4:3 aspect ratio).
This technique can also be coupled with media queries and a bit of ad hoc knowledge about page layout for even more finer-grained control.
It's enough for my needs. Which might be enough for your needs too.
For mine I did it by setting the div's max width, hence for small widget won't get affected and the large widget is resized due to the max-width style.

I am working on this javaFX project and I am trying to change the TreeTableView header or column style such as color, width, font size and etc. I am not able to change style of the header or column. I have try these code but none is working.

The appropriate way to set the styling for a tree table view (and this styling guideline is generally how CSS styling of a main components children tends to work) Tree Table View in this case is the parent element so we will write its full name for our css tag, and then list the child element we would like to modify after. See the code below as an example.

I would advise using width for media query to target phones, if your okay with a person minimizing the browser's width and seeing the same result

And yes it is possible other devices have the same ratio. Specifying this way is troublesome from my experience, and I advise the way above. If you really want to target a specific device, do a quick script check for user agent string of the specific device and load css special for that device below your regular css.
In CSS, if you have two rules that target the same element, there are a number of factors that control which one applies. The two that matter to us are specificity and order.
Specificity means "which rule is more specific?". Consider this HTML:
<div>
<p>Test</p>
</div>
And this CSS:
div p {
color: red;
}
p {
color: blue;
}
In this case, the text will be red. div p is a more specific selector, so that rule overrides the red text set by the p selector.
If two rules have the same specificity, then the order comes into play. Later rules have precedence. Let's change our CSS above to the following:
div p {
color: red;
}
p {
color: blue;
}
div p {
color: green;
}
Now we have two rules with the same specificity. The last one will apply, so our text will be green.
So how does this relate to your problem? In two ways:
Media queries don't increase specificity.
The Rails asset pipeline can change your CSS ordering.
If your mobile CSS is included in the same file as your desktop styles, make sure it's at the bottom of your file, so your mobile rules override your global rules above. And if you're putting it in a separate file, you're going to have to list all of your CSS files in app/assets/stylesheets/application.css and put your mobile.css at the very bottom of your //= require rules, so it gets loaded after all the others. If you allow the Rails //= require_tree . to include your mobile stylesheet, the order will be undefined (but is almost always alphabetical). Which means that your mobile rules won't apply if they're trying to override something in a file starting with something from the second half of the alphabet. Your un-media-queried rules will override the media queried ones.
I realize this is old, but the answer for me was slightly different, and while I don't like my answer as I try to avoid using (!important) when possible, the only thing that worked for me currently was to add !important after my desired visibility setting in the media query.
