problema creating a trigger in oracle to update other table - oracle11g

i'm creating a trigger to update other table to audit.
My main table that is being audited is "employed" and the audit table is "salary_history". Every a update is made in emplyed table the salary_history must be updated.
I'm working with this trigger in oracle 11g:
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER salary_auditing
AFTER UPDATE ON employed
REFERENCING NEW AS NEW OLD AS OLD
BEGIN
INSERT INTO SALARY_HISTORY(ID, EMPLOYED_ID, OLD_SALARY, NEW_SALARY, DATE_MODIFIED) VALUES (SELECT MAX(ID)+1 FROM SALARY_HISTORY, ID, :OLD.salary, :NEW.salary, SYSDATE)
END salary_auditing
The problema is that when i run this trigger i receive this error:
Relatório de erros -
ORA-04082: referências NEW ou OLD não permitidas nos gatilhos de nível de tabela
04082. 00000 - "NEW or OLD references not allowed in table level triggers"
*Cause: The trigger is accessing "new" or "old" values in a table trigger.
*Action: Remove any new or old references.
In english it means that the NEW or OLD values is not allowed at table nivel.
what modifications i should do?

Oracle has row-level and statement-level triggers. Only row-level triggers have access to the :new and :old pseudorecords. Your trigger is currently defined as a statement-level trigger. You need to add FOR EACH ROW to make it a row-level trigger.
Getting the max(id)+1 in an insert statement is a really really bad idea. Unless you have a single user application, that will cause multiple sessions to get the same value and lead to duplicate key errors. Create a sequence and use that sequence.
Saying REFERENCING NEW AS NEW OLD AS OLD is pointless. Unless you are intending to provide different aliases for the :new and :old pseudo-records, omit that. And you should almost never use different aliases.
I would expect that you want
create sequence seq_salary_history_id
start with <<value larger than what is currently in the table>>;
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER salary_auditing
AFTER UPDATE ON employed
FOR EACH ROW
BEGIN
INSERT INTO SALARY_HISTORY(ID,
EMPLOYED_ID,
OLD_SALARY,
NEW_SALARY,
DATE_MODIFIED)
VALUES (seq_salary_history_id.nextval,
:new.ID,
:OLD.salary,
:NEW.salary,
SYSDATE);
END salary_auditing;
If you only want the trigger to fire when you are updating the salary column (since that's the only thing you're tracking history on), add an OF salary to your trigger declaration
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER salary_auditing
AFTER UPDATE OF salary ON employed
FOR EACH ROW

How To Create a PL/SQL Trigger That Detects an Inserted or Updated Row and updates a Record in a Different Table?

I am creating a book tracking database for myself that holds information about my books and allows me to keep track of who is borrowing them. I am trying to create a trigger on my Checkouts table that runs if a record is added or updated that will determine if a checkout data has been entered or if a checkin date has been entered and change the "available" field in my Books table to "Y" or "N".
I have created a trigger called "update_book_availablility" on my Checkouts table but I keep getting this error:
"PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol 'end-of-file' when expecting one of the following: ( begin case declare and exception exit for goto if loop mod null pragma raise return select update while with <<continue close current delete fetch lock insert open rollback savepoint set sql execute commit forall merge standard pipe purge json_object
Errors: check compiler log"
Here is my trigger code:
CREATE OR REPLACE NONEDITIONABLE TRIGGER "UPDATE_BOOK_AVAILABILITY"
AFTER INSERT OR UPDATE OF ISBN, PersonID, checkout_date, checkin_date
ON Checkouts
FOR EACH ROW
BEGIN
IF :NEW.checkout_date = NULL
THEN
UPDATE Book
SET available = 'N'
WHERE ISBN IN (SELECT :NEW.ISBN FROM Checkouts);
END IF;
END;
Here is an image of my ERD:
ERD
I have been looking into and double checking my trigger syntax, If condition syntax, subquery syntax, and googling this error but have found nothing that has helped. I am new to PL/SQL and would appreciate any help in understanding what I have done wrong or missed.
PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol end-of-file error is SYNTAX ERROR
Copied your trigger and adjusted it to one of my test tables - it works. I removed NONEDITIONABLE and changed trigger table name as well as column names and table/column beeing updated by trigger.
To Do:
Check your syntax again or write the trigger from scratch once more
"...WHERE ISBN IN (SELECT :NEW.ISBN FROM Checkouts)..." selects one fixed value (FOR EACH ROW) :NEW.ISBN of triggering table, better ->> "... WHERE ISBN = :NEW.ISBN ..."
Prety sure that you don't need NONEDITIONABLE trigger for your books tracking app...

Sqlite: Are updates to two tables within an insert trigger atomic?

I refactored a table that stored both metadata and data into two tables, one for metadata and one for data. This allows metadata to be queried efficiently.
I also created an updatable view with the original table's columns, using sqlite's insert, update and delete triggers. This allows calling code that needs both data and metadata to remain unchanged.
The insert and update triggers write each incoming row as two rows - one in the metadata table and one in the data table, like this:
// View
CREATE VIEW IF NOT EXISTS Item as select n.Id, n.Title, n.Author, c.Content
FROM ItemMetadata n, ItemData c where n.id = c.Id
// Trigger
CREATE TRIGGER IF NOT EXISTS item_update
INSTEAD OF UPDATE OF id, Title, Author, Content ON Item
BEGIN
UPDATE ItemMetadata
SET Title=NEW.Title, Author=NEW.Author
WHERE Id=old.Id;
UPDATE ItemData SET Content=NEW.Content
WHERE Id=old.Id;
END;
Questions:
Are the updates to the ItemMetadata and ItemData tables atomic? Is there a chance that a reader can see the result of the first update before the second update has completed?
Originally I had the WHERE clauses be WHERE rowid=old.rowid but that seemed to cause random problems so I changed them to WHERE Id=old.Id. The original version was based on tutorial code I found. But after thinking about it I wonder how sqlite even comes up with an old rowid - after all, this is a view across multiple tables. What rowid does sqlite pass to an update trigger, and is the WHERE clause the way I first coded it problematic?
The documentation says:
No changes can be made to the database except within a transaction. Any command that changes the database (basically, any SQL command other than SELECT) will automatically start a transaction if one is not already in effect.
Commands in a trigger are considered part of the command that triggered the trigger.
So all commands in a trigger are part of a transaction, and atomic.
Views do not have a (usable) rowid.

pl sql: trigger for insert data from another table

There is the table OLD and a similar one, NEW. I want to insert in the existing process that fills the table OLD a trigger event that for each new inserted row, this event will insert the newly inserted row to table NEW, as well. Inside the body of trigger, i need to include the query BELOW which aggregates values of OLD before inserted in NEW:
insert into NEW
select (select a.id,a.name,a.address,b.jitter,a.packet,a.compo,b.rtd,a.dur from OLD a,
select address,packet,compo, avg(jitter) as jitter, avg(rtd) as rtd from OLD
group by address,packet,compo ) b
where a.address=b.address and a.packet=b.packet and a.compo=b.compo;
can you correct any possible mistakes or suggest other trigger syntax on the statement below?
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER insertion
after update on OLD
for each row
begin
MY select query above
end;
In a for each row trigger you cannot query the table itself. You will get a mutating table error message if you do.
I recommend only to use triggers for the most basic functionality such as handing out ID numbers and very basic checks.
If you do use triggers for more complex tasks you may very easily end up with a system that's very hard to debug and maintain because of all kinds of actions that appear out of knowhere.
Look at this question for another approach: getting rid of Insert trigger
Oracle Streams might also be a good solution. In the apply handler, you can include your own custom PL/SQL code. This procedure will be called after the COMMIT, so you can avoid mutating table errors.
However, Streams requires a large amount of setup to make it work. It might be overkill for what you are doing.

asp.net InsertCommand to return latest insert ID

I'm unable to retrieve the latest inserted id from my SQL Server 2000 db using a typed dataset in asp.NET
I have created a tableadapter and I ticked the "Refresh datatable" and "Generate Insert, Update and Delete statements". This auto-generates the Fill and GetData methods, and the Insert, Update, Select and Delete statements.
I have tried every possible solution in this thread
http://forums.asp.net/t/990365.aspx
but I'm still unsuccesfull, it always returns 1(=number of affected rows).
I do not want to create a seperate insert method as the auto-generated insertCommand perfectly suits my needs.
As suggested in the thread above, I have tried to update the InsertCommand SQL syntax to add SELECT SCOPY_IDENTITY() or something similar, I have tried to add a parameter of type ReturnValue, but all I get is the number of affected rows.
Does anyone has a different take on this?
Thanks in advance!
Stijn
I decided to give up, I can't afford to waste any more time on this.
I use the Insert statement after which I do a select MAX(id) query to hget the insert ID
If anyone should have a solution, I'll be glad to read it here
Thanks
Stijn
I successfully found a way to get the incremental id after insert using my table adapter.
My approach is a little different, I'm using a Store procedure to make the insert, so my insert command has all the values but the ID, I made the sp return the ID just calling:
SET #ID=SCOPE_IDENTITY()
and then
COMMIT TRAN
and last line will be
RETURN #ID
Then I searched my table adapter parameters for InsertCommand and set the #RETURNVALUE to the column of the incremental ID of the table, so when it's executed automatically put the return value on the id field.
Hope this help
You need to tell your table's table-adapter to refresh the
data-table after update/insert operation.
This is how you can do that.
Open the properties of TableAdapter -> Default Select Query -> Advnaced options. and Check the option of Refresh the data table. Save the adapter now. Now when you call update on table-adapter, the data-table will be updated [refreshed] after the update/insert operation and will reflect the latest values from database table. if the primary-key or any coloumn is set to auto-increment, the data-table will have those latest value post recent update.
Now you can Call the update as TableAdapterObj.Update(ds.dataTable);
Read latest values from the DataTable(ds.dataTable) coloumns and assign respective values into the child table before update/insert. This will work exactly the way you want.

Handling Constraint SqlException in Asp.net

Suppose I have a user table that creates strong relationships (Enforce Foreign Key Constraint) with many additional tables. Such orders table ..
If we try to delete a user with some orders then SqlException will arise.. How can I catch this exception and treat it properly?
Is this strategy at all?
1) first try the delete action if an exception Occur handel it?
2) Or maybe before the delete action using code adapted to ensure that offspring records throughout the database and alert according to .. This piece of work ...
So how to do it?
--Edit:
The goal is not to delete the records from the db! the goal is to inform the user that this record has referencing records. do i need to let sql to execute the delete command and try to catch SqlException? And if so, how to detect that is REFERENCE constraint SqlException?
Or - should I need to write some code that will detect if there are referencing records before the delete command. The last approach give me more but its a lot of pain to implement this kind of verification to each entity..
Thanks
Do you even really want to actually delete User records? Instead I'd suggest having a "deleted" flag in your database, so when you "delete" a user through the UI, all it does is update that record to set the flag to 1. After all, you wouldn't want to delete users that had orders etc.
Then, you just need to support this flag in the appropriate areas (i.e. don't show "deleted" users in the UI).
Edit:
"...but just for the concept, assume that i do want delete the user how do i do that?"
You'd need to delete the records from the other tables that reference that user first, before deleting the user record (i.e. delete the referencing records first then delete the referenced records). But to me that doesn't make sense as you would be deleting e.g. order data.
Edit 2:
"And if so, how to detect that is REFERENCE constraint SqlException?"
To detect this specific error, you can just check the SqlException.Number - I think for this error, you need to check for 547 (this is the error number on SQL 2005). Alternatively, if using SQL 2005 and above, you could handle this error entirely within SQL using the TRY...CATCH support:
BEGIN TRY
DELETE FROM User WHERE UserId = #MyUserId
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
IF (ERROR_NUMBER() = 547)
BEGIN
-- Foreign key constraint violation. Handle as you wish
END
END CATCH
However, I'd personally perform a pre-check like you suggested though, to save the exception. It's easily done using an EXISTS check like this:
IF NOT EXISTS(SELECT * FROM [Orders] WHERE UserId=#YourUserId)
BEGIN
-- User is not referenced
END
If there are more tables that reference a User, then you'd need to also include those in the check.
