This is probably a dumb question, but I'm worried :
I have published a website on a server, then made some changes to a css file.
As the css file was already cached by my browser, it didn't display the changes.
deleting the cash allowed to display the changes.
Now my worry is that if some users have previously been to the website, and it is cached by their browser, if I make a change they wouldn't be able to see it.
How do you guys prevent this ? Do you just change the file names ?

There are a number of solutions floating around the web, but as far as I can tell they all boil down to changing the CSS filenames whenever their content changes. That way you steer clear of user caches and server caches serving old content.
Variants:
Instead of changing the name of the file itself, create a symbolic link with a new name to the old file whenever content changes.
Instead of changing the name of the file, change the way it is referenced by the page. Replacing myfile.css?v=1 by myfile.css?v=2 circumvents people's caches.
Write code that automatically changes the name or the link name or the way the file is referenced
Use a framework that does one of the above.
And: remember that the same problem applies to any content that might be cached, like JS files.
I'm really confused as to why my browser is not updating my CSS? I've viewed it on other computers/browsers and cleared the cache but the CSS doesn't seem to update in the browser even if it is already updated via FTP.

the "image.css" file is not updating in the browser even if it looks updated in the FTP?
What could be the problem? I updated the files together with my index.html but the css files are the ones that does not seem to update.
I attached screenshots of the difference in the css file that does not seem update on the browser. This is what displays via FTP (I use Forklift which I think is similar to FileZilla)

I found out that this was a CloudFlare issue and purging their cache would solve the css mismatch. Hope this helps anyone encountering the same problem.
I have just started exploring the possibility of saving changes made to a page and it's styling in Chrome Dev Tools on the fly.
I've followed this short video tutorial on mapping the project files on disk to the Dev Tools via the Sources tab. Everything works fine until around the 5:17 point where he selects an element in the Elements tab and makes several CSS style changes which automatically persist to the file on disk.
This doesn't work for me. The changes won't save to the file and when I refresh the page reverts to the original styles. I have checked to see if there is an asterisk beside the corresponding CSS file in the Sources panel, to denote changes have been made, but there is nothing there.
I have also tried the solution posted in this SO question but I don't see the link to the stylesheet after editing the style in the Elements tab that will redirect back to the file in the Sources tab allowing the changes to be saved.
Can anyone tell me what I am missing? Thanks!
You need to make sure you map your Workspace to a Network Resource to persist changes automatically. I have produced the steps below to get this working correctly.
Select the folder in Sources and click 'Add Folder to Workspace'
If you open up our stylesheet in Sources and go to the Elements panel to make changes, upon coming back you will see a separate instance of the stylesheet opened with pending changes. The reason is that Chrome doesn't know how to map the URL to the file on your system yet.
Select 'Map to Network Resource...'. You will notice that 'top' disappears.
Make a change in the Elements panel now. When you go back to the Sources panel, the changes will automatically be shown without requiring any explicit save.
You can see exactly what was done by going to the Workspaces section of the DevTools settings panel. We've added a local Workspace, and then mapping the URL, which in my case is on my computer and accessed with the file:// protocol, to the relative path on the system.
I am using wordpress as my cms and building a website. I use Graphene as my theme, as I modify the style.css through the administration menu (and verify the change via vi editor), I see that the change is there.
Now when I open my website, and right click Inspect element, I still see a old value of my "height parameter".
So I deleted all cookies, temp files from Chrome. And relaunched the website, still the old height values persist. What am I missing here ?
All sites I have referred to hint at clearing cookies, temp files.

Open the page in incognito mode in Chrome (ctrl + shift + n ) just to make sure the page is loading the updated css file.
Chances are the CSS file you're editing is not the one your website is using.
Double check that the path to the CSS file you're expecting to change is the one you're changing in the backend.
I have a huge problem with my Wordpress. My uploaded images don't list in the Media Library.
It is weird tho, it says I have 75 images, but display none. Take a look yourself.
Even weirder, if I go into gallery (the images you uploaded in the page itself), the images list just fine.
I already tried deactivating all my plugins, didn't work. Cache can be easily put out of the question, because it happened on at least 4 different computers, with Macs, PCs, and navigating with Safari, Firefox and Chrome.
Another interesting fact is that if I upload the image directly trough the computer (with the "From Computer" tab), everything goes fine. Another website on the same server works just fine too. And just to add to the complexity, when I go to the media page in the Wordpress Admin, all images show up just fine.
Oh, and before I forget... applying any filters, or doing a research in the media will always come up with the same problem.
So there... that's where I'm at.
I had a same problem just now, with missing media library images for my blog. The images appeared to be right there in the media library and were definitely on the actual web server (checked via FTP).
As Allen Z advised I did "check Settings → Media and make sure that Uploading Files folder is set to wp-content/uploads"
Mine were set to the default blank. I altered this to an absolute path http://www.example.com/wp-content/uploads
THIS DIDNT SOLVE THE PROBLEM when I refreshed the site in browser. However, I immediately changed the path back to blank (the default setting again) and everything came back! Woop
Everyone having this problem might want to try this before getting into the more technical fixes!
it was your permalinks... you must have changed to labeled-name... switch back to default.
that worked for me.
Check Screen Options (dropdown tab in the upper right hand corner of the page), and make sure there are sane settings for what to show on screen. All the column settings should be checked, and there should be a positive number of media items being shown on screen.
If that is ok, then check Settings → Media and make sure that Uploading Files folder is set to wp-content/uploads.
I believe these are the only settings that can be changed from the administrative screens.
Here's something a guy on Wordpress forum showed us. Add the following to your functions.php file. (remember to create a backup of your functions.php first)

Did you ever change the directory of your Wordpress install?
I had a problem with not finding my uploaded images after changing the Wordpress location on my server. In Wordpress, I went to Dashboard-> Settings -> Media and changed the uploads folder in the "Store uploads in this folder" field.
Considering the files were not uploaded via media uploader, they are present in the server but there's no reference to them in your database (in a little more detail).
In order to fix it, install the Media Sync plugin. Once it's active, under Media > Media Sync > Scan Files and select the files you want to import by click the checkbox next to them. Make sure also you untick the selectbox Dry Run (test without making database changes).
Then, when the time comes for you to be ready, just click "Import Selected" and you should see something like this
Once it is finished, you can visit Media > Library and you'll see all your imported files there.
How did you upload those images; via FTP or through WP uploader? You have to upload images THROUGH WP uploader in order to show them in the image library.
Ubuntu stores uploads in /var/lib/wordpress/wp-content/uploads . So what you need is to have this directory within your wordpress installation. Something like:
sudo ln -s /var/lib/wordpress/wp-content/uploads /var/www/www.mysite.com/wp-uploads
(replace mysite.com with your domain, the file should exist) should do the trick.
(Note that I've not tested this with multiple wordpress installations on one server.)
Further note that to make upload work at all (but this wasn't the question), you need to change Settings / Media / Store uploads in this folder to
wp-content/uploads
(no leading slash).
check .htaccess file in root of wordpress, maybe there is a rule for /uploads directory.
if so, remove it. but be careful and check which plugin did it, so disable the plugin, first.
