VS 2015 Preview missing "ASP.NET 5 Web Application" project type? - asp.net

In Visual Studio 2015 Preview, I see the following vNext templates in the "New Project" window:
I am under the impression that I should also see an entry for "ASP.NET 5 Empty Web Application" or something similar, but I see no such thing. Those two entries are the only "vNext" designated entries that I have installed.
Is there an additional binary I need to install in order to enable this type of project to appear? Or do I need to examine my VS 2015 Preview installation?
Note: I do have an entry for "ASP.NET Web Application", which takes me through the setup with the unified architecture but does not appear to include a project.json file or things that I'm associating with ASP.NET 5 development.
Update: Per this article regarding 2013 I also tried to run devenv.exe /installvstemplates, but that didn't work either. To clarify, I don't see any new web template, which the screenshot below illustrates as well:

I was having the same problem, except that unlike the accepted answer suggests, the ASP.NET Web Application was not on the list of templates at all.
I was able to get it to show up after following the instructions from this article.
From Visual Studio 2015: Tools -> Extensions and Updates
Select Online then click Visual Studio Gallery
Search for ASP.NET Project Templates and download the first result.
Go through installation process, relaunch Visual Studio, and Web Application should now be an option!
Alternately, you can download the templates directly here.
I believe this download actually is meant to install some other templates that I wasn't interested in, but installing them must have also installed the base template in the process. Either way, it worked for me.

Visual Studio Ultimate 2015 Preview contains everything you need to create an ASP.NET 5 (vNext) web application. One additional generic option should be available that's not depicted in your question:
It's not entirely clear at this point, but choosing the generic web application option will present a few ASP.NET 5 (vNext) options that you're seeking in the following dialog:

In Visual Studio 2015 Preview Microsoft has renamed ASP.NET vNext to ASP.NET 5
If you open http://www.asp.net/vnext, in every article vNext is metioned as ASP.NET 5

In following Sam's Suggestion, I noticed that there were Updates Pending. One of these updates included the missing ASP.NET 5 templates.
Tools > Extensions & Updates > Updates > Visual Studio Gallery
Once updated & Installed, the Web Application was then available as described in the tutorial.

The new update released this week has renamed ASP.NET 5 into a new framework which they are now calling ASP.NET Core. More information can be found in this article https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/webdev/2016/05/16/announcing-asp-net-core-rc2/

VS 2015 Preview is going under ASP.net Core web application. If you cant see that one under templates you may go to this site and download .NET Core 1.0 for Visual Studio then install.

In my case the problem was in the Microsoft .NET Core 1.0.1 VS 2015 Tooling Preview 2 corrupted installation.
It was performed:
install the ASP.NET Project Templates following answer from this post - NO RESULT
reinstalling Microsoft Web Developer Tools from the identical SO post - NO RESULT
fresh install the IDE using TotalUninstaller tool - NO RESULT
repair the Microsoft .NET Core 1.0.1 (see the sketch below) - SOLVED
Only repair .NET Core 1.0.1 finally solved the problem!

For that you have to download the .net core cross platform development, below steps you will refer
open VISUAL Studio installer
click the option in the list click modify
below image you can refer it
once complete installation, now you have the option for asp.net core web application

ASP.net Core Web Application Template is missing

I am trying to follow this tutorial: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/aspnet/core/tutorials/razor-pages/razor-pages-start
However, when I get to the Create a Razor Web App section, there is no template in my install of VS2017.
I have both the .net core and asp.net and web dev workloads installed. Where have I gone wrong?
Open Visual Studio (assuming its 2017) and go to: Tools > Extensions and Updates
Click "ASP.Net and web development", then select the appropriate Individual Components in the right hand pane. You'll find components such as ".Net Core 2.0 Development tools" and ASP.Net web development tools"
Have you got the latest update for your Visual Studio installation?
Head to Add or Remove Programs
find Visual Studio
Click Modify
Allow the installer to update
Install any updates that are missing
On top of that, do you have the latest version of the .NET Core SDK?
It seems I had an OS issue that caused updates to fail. Have rebuilt the PC and all working as expected now. Very much a sledgehammer approach, but this was something fundamentally wrong with the installation.

how do I find out if I have asp.net CORE

I have been asked to update my Visual Studio with asp.net core. But the update told me I already have this component. However when I look in the list for New Project I can find nothing which includes the word CORE.
How do I work this out?
I'm not talking about a single Visual Studio Project or File. I'm talking about the whole program. I have to update the program.
You need to download Tooling Preview 2 to get the asp.net core templates. That is a bug in the visual studio 2015. Please follow the following steps to resolve this issue
This is what your add new project dialog will look like once you have .net core installed correctly. Were you able to resolve this?
Is it a console app or a web app? If you have a .xproj file in your Visual Studio project, then you have ASP.NET Core web application. Probably the same for an ASP.NET Core console application.

Missing ASP.NET 5 Templates

I am following this setup tutorial
https://docs.asp.net/en/latest/tutorials/your-first-aspnet-application.html#create-a-new-asp-net-5-project
And have come across a problem. In the tutorial the instructions are as follows:
Start Visual Studio 2015. From the File menu, select New > Project.
Select the ASP.NET Web Application project template. It appears under
Installed > Templates > Visual C# > Web. Name the project ContosoBooks
and click OK.
This is fine, but in the next step :
In the New ASP.NET Project dialog, select Web Application under
ASP.NET 5 Preview Templates. Also, make sure the Host in the cloud
checkbox is not selected and click OK.
I am seeing no ASP.NET 5 Preview templates!
The only thing I am noticing is that my Authentication states No Authentication but I am signed in so I am not sure what this means or whether or not this is a factor.
The version I have installed of Visual Studio is "Community 2015".
I have already gone through the perquisites as outlined in This Article.
I am hoping that someone with a more thorough knowledge on the topic can help me out as I have not been able to find any threads etc. of the same issue or what could be causing the Templates to be missing.
Asp.net 5 templates no longer exist - they are renamed to Asp.net Core: ASP.NET 5 is dead - Introducing ASP.NET Core 1.0 and .NET Core 1.0
So, when creating your project, instead of picking "ASP.NET Web Application" as it is in the video - you would select "ASP.NET Core Web Application" and then on the next page those 3 templates (Empty, Web API, Web Application) are the same as the video's asp.net 5 preview templates
VS 2015 Preview is going under ASP.net Core web application. If you cant see that one under templates you may go to this site and download .NET Core 1.0 for Visual Studio then install.
I have concluded, by following another stackoverflow question on How to check the ASP.NET version loaded on a system as I noticed that the templates were categorized in the ASP.NET versions (4.6.1 & 5) in the tutorials but mine were not.
So I then checked and my files in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework are as follows
Revealing no v5.0 directory. I rectified this and now all of the templates are available
AMENDMENT:
To fix it:
I went to http://www.asp.net/downloads and downloaded ASP.NET MVC 5
I ensured I had Developer Tools checked in the download process.
This issue was now resolved - As I then had the MVC 5 template files. Because I downloaded them, so I had them... and no longer didn't have them.
ALTERNATE FIX:
Furthermore From my research, some people had not included Developer Tools. To resolve: go to old mate 'Add or remove programs' and find your Microsoft Visual Studio 20xx install, 'change' and install Microsoft Web Developer Tools
I have had the same problem but it is actually even better because "The new dialog enables you to change the default authentication options for many of the templates. For example, when you create an ASP.NET Web Forms project you can select any of the following options:
No Authentication
Individual User Accounts (ASP.NET membership or social provider log in)
Organizational Accounts (Active Directory in an internet application)"
check out this >> http://www.asp.net/mvc/mvc5
I recently had this problem and finally fixed it by uninstalling (control panel -> uninstall a program) Microsoft.NET Core and Microsoft Visual C++ redistrutable 2015 (x64 & x86) and then re-installing the asp.net core rc2 (https://www.microsoft.com/net/core#windows or possibly check Tools->Extensions and Updates->Updates inside of Visual Studio).
I uninstalled the Visual C++ redistrutables because I kept getting an error when trying to re-install asp.net core rc2. It kept telling me that it already existed even after I had just uninstalled it and the update was showing in the "Extensions and Updates" section of Visual Studio after trying (but failing) to install the asp.net core rc2 update.

asp net VNext and older visual studio versions

I am trying to convert my current asp net application to an ASP.Net vnext application and I am trying to figure out if we have have to use Visual Studio 15 or visual studio 14 ctp 3 for vnext to work? Will it work in visual studio 12 or 13?
I found this link
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dotnet/archive/2014/08/18/try-out-the-new-releases-net-framework-vnext-asp-net-vnext-net-native-and-ryujit.aspx
and I haven't heard any updates.
If you want to use Visual Studio, you need Visual Studio 2015 and CTP6.
Good news is, you can have VS2015 installed side by side with 2012 or 2013 with no problems. (really!) And if you are not yet familiarized with the command line tools, I do highly recommend to install vs2015.
For migrations, there's some documentation in the workings on the Docs repo.
check this out : https://github.com/aspnet/Docs/blob/master/docs/migrating/migratingfrommvc5/migratingfrommvc5.rst
this is just one, there are a few more doc pages on that repo that might help you to get started and see which changes should be made and how to apply one by one.
Unfortunately the documentation is not finished and there's not much about it, so be prepared to have patience because you will be migrating and learning a new stack in the process.
Microsoft team has been very active and helpful in all channels (twitter, SO, github, etc) so, you can at least get help if you find a block.
The tooling for ASP.NET 5 is only available for VS 2015.
However, you can build and run ASP.NET 5 applications outside of VS using the command line tool and other editors.

ASP.NET Web Application template missing in Visual Studio 2012

has anyone else dealt with this? My ultimate goal is to create a new empty web api project. I've been following tutorials and I've encountered the following issue:
My issue is that when I try to create a ASP.NET Web Application project in Visual Studio Pro 2012 I do not see that template as an option. I go to Installed --> Templates --> Visual C# --> Web
All I see is ASP.NET Empty Web Application. So I selected that and then expected the ASP.Net project window to pop up so that I could select "Web Api". However, that dialog never opened.
Does anyone know how/where I can get the ASP.NET Web Application template?
I came across your question as I had the same problem. When I first installed Visual Studio I didn't tick the box to install the Web Components. Here is how I solved the issue:
Close all your instances of Visual Studio.
Run the Visual Studio Installer (I found mine in the Downloads folder still and was named "vs_professional.exe").
For VS 2013 a grey window appears similar to when first installing VS.
When prompted select "Modify" from the list of options.
Tick the list item which I think was named "Web Development" or something similar.
Click update.
Once the installer has finished running launch Visual Studio.
When selecting New Project in Visual Studio I can now see the required templates.
Try to select Framework 4.5.
The Framework 4.0 don't have :)

If you have ASP.NET MVC 4 Web Application as an option under Web when you select it as a new project the project window pops up and you will be able to select Web API.
kale909's solution worked for me. I just added pics here to make it more clear:
