Scalable/Modular CSS: how to handle vertical margins between modules? - css

I've searched extensively, and can't seem to find a consistent way that people handle the top/bottom margins between modules in a... modular way. I like the idea of just using a generic wrapper div with the css as .page-area { margin-bottom: 1em }, but in the real world, designers aren't that consistent, and you end up with multiple variations on that container. I've used this sass code on a few projects, and it worked alright, but I didn't necessarily love it (credit to Nicole Sullivan):

I realize that questions like this can potentially start discussions, but that's not my intent - I'm just wondering if there is a single common best practice for consistent vertical margin/padding of modules and page sections? SMACSS doesn't seem to touch on it.

I don't know if this will be helpful for you, but this is usually what I do.
I set a vertical rhythm variable based on my defaults, and then make a placeholder class for vertical rhythm, which I extend on elements that need it.
$base-font-size: 20px !default
$base-line-height: 1.3
$base-vertical-rhythm: ceil($base-font-size * $base-line-height)
%base-vertical-rhythm
margin-bottom: em($base-vertical-rhythm)

Compass also has some presets for vertical rhythm.

According to CSS' specificity rules (try this calculator) you unfortunately need to repeat yourself. What your SCSS interpreter does is just compiling what you've written to standard CSS, which will look something akin to:

As you can see, you're overriding each class with a #media ruleset just after it has been declared. And since I'm a big proponent to never use !important (because you'll open a pandoras box), the only way you can shorten your SCSS is doing:

Does Bootstrap have built-in padding and margin classes like pad-10, mar-left-10 or I have to add my own custom classes? For example, similar to the ones here at padding and margin tabs.

From the documentation:

Spacing utilities that apply to all breakpoints, from xs to xl, have

applied from min-width: 0 and up, and thus are not bound by a media
query. The remaining breakpoints, however, do include a breakpoint
abbreviation.
The classes are named using the format {property}{sides}-{size} for xs
and {property}{sides}-{breakpoint}-{size} for sm, md, lg, and xl.

Bootstrap 5 has changed the ml,mr,pl,pr classes, which no longer work if you're upgrading from a lower version.
The l and r have now been replaced with s(...which is confusing) and e(east?) respectively.

I think what you're asking about is how to create responsive spacing between rows or col-xx-xx classes.
You can definitely do this with the col-xx-offset-xx class:

As for adding margin or padding directly to elements, there are some simple ways to do this depending on your element. You can use btn-lg or label-lg or well-lg. If you're ever wondering, how can i give this alittle padding. Try adding the primary class name + lg or sm or md depending on your size needs:

I'd like to eventually leverage it for different sizes and for margins as well. This is how I've begun to write it in LESS, but is there a shorter way to write this?
