I am looking for a way to port one wordpress install across to another site.
For example, say I have:
development.example.com
example.com
I want to transfer everything from development.example.com to example.com
Transferring the domain name is always a pain for me and I am hoping someone can help me.
After transferring to a new domain and hosting, I normally have to go into the wordpress database into the options table and change two fields.
siteurl and home (I change these to my new domain name)
I can then run example.com/wp-admin and I will be able to login.
The above works fine on the basic setup, but the issue I am having is that when you have lots of different plugins all adding options and other fields to the database it turns into a bit of a nightmare.
I normally have to remove the plugin folder and reinstall them one by one, and then use a search and replace plugin to change all the options from.
search: development.example.com
replace: example.com
This all seems like a very long winded process considering when I build with codeigniter you only have to change the url in one place config.php and then just run a
cp -rf development.example.com/* example.com
Could someone advise me on how they normally run a transfer with wordpress where all this search replace and login issues aren’t needed.

I have a WP Multisite in which a site was running. The administrators decided they would revamp the site, and they did it in a provisional subdirectory so that the original site would be available while the changes took place. So this is the current structure:
mymultisite.com
mysite.com
mymultisite.com/mysitebeingremade
Now that the site changes have been finished, I would like to attach the domain name to the revamped site. So, I try to disable the site currently attached to mysite.com, change its domain to a different one, and attach the domain name to the revamped one. So from the sites configuration I make the following changes in Sites > Edit site > Site info:
mymultisite.com
mysite.com -> mymultisite.com/mysite
mymultisite.com/mysitebeingremade -> mysite.com
But it seems as if the domain name keeps pointing to the old site. What am I doing wrong? Or is it just impossible to reuse a domain name previously used in a multisite, but not in use anymore, for a new site?
I guess that I can just overwrite the original sites with the one with the changes, but I think it is too much hassle for a seemingly simple task.

Ok, I sorted it out.
It seems that, when you delete a site from the multisite, it doesn't get deleted from the database. Specifically, one entry remains in the table [prefix]_domain_mapping in which the fields 'id' and 'blog_id' are still pointing to the old site that was linked to that domain.
By changing those two fields to the id of the new site that will be using that domain name, and provided that all the changes have been made to the configuration of that site in the site configuration to use that domain for that site, it should work ok.

I am trying to set up a development site on the sub-domain development.warriorsliveon.org of warriorsliveon.org.
This is a WordPress site and I copied the plug-ins, themes, and upload folders to the new WordPress installation on the sub-domain. I also copied the database from warriorsliveon.org, did a find and replace of warriorsliveon.org to development.warriorsliveon.org.
When I go to the site , http://development.warriorsliveon.org. it either switches automatically to the follow address, or other times, lets me log into WordPress, but then goes to this address.
http://development.development.www.development.development.warriorsliveon.org/
Anyone have any ideas where I should look to resolve this issue?
I'm happy to post any code, just not sure at this point what would be useful. Any help is appreciated!
Changing the Domain Name that your Wordpress installation runs under is more complicated than just editing one or two files. The best approach is to use a tool like https://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/
If you download this free tool and upload to your server then it does a batch find-and-replace across every single table in your Wordpress database.
So, for example, replace http://www.warriorsliveon.org with http://development.warriorsliveon.org
You can do a dry run and it will show you all the replaces that it will make. Once you're happy then click the "live run" button and all the changes are made.
I use this tool all the time when I am moving a site from my local machine to the live server. I also use the exact same approach when migrating a site from http to https
I currently have a website up and running that is my freelancing website. What I wanted to do was create a testing subdirectory on the website.
So for example my site would be:
website.com
I want the testing site to be: website.com/test
I need this test to be private and require a password to view, as well as be a different installation of wordpress so I can manipulate it without editing my main website. Is this possible? Currently I have created a test directory from the cPanel that requires a password but it just brings me to a 404 not found page.
I would also like to create more, public, instances that I can use as a portfolio until I get more real clients. So for example I would like to have my site be: website.com/themeOne
Is any of this possible, or am I out of luck? Please let me know I would greatly appreciate any help. Anything I found found online thus far has either not been relevant or has not worked.
You can achieve this by setting up a wordpress multisite installation. I currently use this to host all my clients.
Will work like this.. Main site is website.com
Depending on how long you have had that site set up will determine whether your multisite install will be a subdirectory or a subdomain. If you have had your main site for a while it will be subdomains. ie. xyz.website.com
You will have to set up a wild card subdomain on your server though...so keep that in mind.

You can install as many WordPress instances as you like in subfolders example.com/test/ or subdomains test.example.com in one hosting account; see http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_Multiple_Blogs. (You are, of course, limited if your host does not support subdomains. And you may find lots of sites with lots of traffic will slow your whole hosting account.)

I've finished the styling changes on WordPress and I'm ready to move it from MAMP to my domain.
Will this involve any changes to the WordPress files or can I just drag it over to my new domain once I purchased it?
The main start you must make is update your wp-config.php
define('WP_HOME','http://www.mynewdomain.com');
define('WP_SITEURL','http://www.mynewdomain.com');
That way wordpress knows what domain it MUST run from.
The reason you do that is because without this you may not be able to access admin, login, etc etc.
When this is working and you have logged in, go to wp-admin and go to your permalink settings.
Make a NOTE of your settings, then change them to default (and woocommerce settings etc).
Go to your home page and a few others, and notice how messed up your urls look :)
Now go back to permalink settings and restore them (the point of this is to make sure your .htaccess file that wordpress depends upon is set correctly)
Finally, have a look at https://github.com/veloper/WordPress-Domain-Changer to change your sql etc if needed.
note this method is very handy for developers so you just update your wp-config.php for localhost or development or production (not for testing purposes, don't use your local pc. copy it all up to a subdirectory of your hosting partner e.g. http://www.mynewdomain.com/mytestarea. Make sure you use a COPY of the mysql database (never point both to the same database). You now can test on the hosting platform without disturbing the live site or your development causing issues to other people.
It's been a long while for me personally, but you'll want to change the SiteURL via the options menu in wp-admin.
Otherwise, just make sure your MySQL database is exported over, your credentials and user permissions are all setup and those work too.

The database has to be updated. What always works for me is that I export the database from phpMyAdmin or MySQL (using mysqldump) and open the exported .sql-file with a text editor, like Sublime Text.
Now you want to find any occurence of your previous URL. Let's say on your dev machine the URL to the index of your Wordpress site is http://localhost:8080/wordpress and you want it to be on a website under https://domain.com you simply do a Find & Replace using that and replace everything with https://domain.com.
For older Wordpress versions you have to update the .htaccess files if you have custom URL's.
You have to make a search replace in your database and replace your local domain ( test.lo ) with the live domain ( test.com ).

Add the searchreplacedb2.php file in your route folder and the access test.lo/searchreplacedb2.php and follow the steps there. This will replace your local domain with your live one everywhere in the database.
You can't make a simple search-replace because the local domain might be serialized in some fields in the database, and a simple search-replace will not replace those.
I have successfully moved a wordpress site from /test directory to the root, so now the website url looks like www.example.com. Fine.
However the admin section (wp-admin) still points to /test directory and so the url looks like www.example.com/test/wp-admin/...
How can I make it like www.example.com/wp-admin/...?
Please notice that I'm not interested in a simple redirection (now the customer is able to access the admin section with www.example.com/wp-admin, but then he's redirected to www.example.com/test/wp-admin/..., and it's not what he wants.

You may need to change many URLs in post/page content; if so, see https://github.com/interconnectit/Search-Replace-DB as suggested in the above Docs.
There is no need to create a new Wordpress install.
Also see http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory#Using_a_pre-existing_subdirectory_install if you want to keep core Wordpress files and folders in a subfolder, but have the site appear to be at root for the end user.
You should not move wordpress this way. Here is what you do:
Install Clean Wordpress Installation on the new domain.
(www.original.com)
Use a plugin* to make back-up on your test domain.
(www.original.com/test/)
Install plugin* on the new domain, and restore back-up from test
domain. (www.orignal.com)
Update your style.css, header.php, index.php & footer.php if it
contains hard written links to your test domain.
You cannot simply move a wordpress installation - as most entries, links etc. are stored in the database. If you move folders in your ftp they will still point to the old database. This is why you have to duplicate your site, where the database entries will be automatically updated to your new site domain. Hard written links in any theme php files will have to be updated.
Although your problem depends on how your pointers/sites are set-up in c-panel. If you have to change pointers for your directory, you might have to back-up your website and upload it to a different domain so your new site can access the restoration back-up file via http request.
