I'm building a system with messages that can be assigned to (one or more) users.

As soon as I add that second JOIN it throws an error...
Error: Expected Literal, got 'JOIN'
What would be the correct way to get all assigned messages for user X?

Doctrine should already understand how your tables relate through your entity mappings (if not, you might need to set those up first). Rather than trying to join a whole table and then specifying what the table is joined on (SQL-style), just join, for example, au.assignment as a.
At that point, you can also specify any additional conditions on your join, such as you'd want on a.status.
You might prefer to reorder the joins below depending on what associations you have set up in which directions (I don't know whether your Message has an assignments property, for example).

How to get the list of _Relation according to selection above.
This is generally not possible like in ABAP SQL queries:
SELECT m~*, kt~*
FROM mara AS m
JOIN makt AS kt
...
This contradicts the whole idea of CDS associations, because they were created to join on-demand and to reduce redundant calls to database. Fetching all fields negates the whole idea of "lazy join".
However, there is another syntax in FROM clause which is enabled by path expressions that allows querying underlining associations both fully and by separate elements. Here is how
SELECT *
FROM ygac_i_request_role( pm_req_id = #lv_test )
\_Role AS role
INTO TABLE #DATA(lt_result).
This fetches all the fields of _Role association into internal table.
Note: remember, it is not possible to fetch all the published associations of current view simultaneously, only one path per query.
Possible workaround is to use JOIN

This creates deep-structured type with dedicated structure for every join association like this:
If you are not comfortable with such structure for you task, lt_table should be declared statically to put up all the fields in a flat way
TYPES BEGIN OF ty_table.
INCLUDE TYPE ygac_i_request_role.
INCLUDE TYPE ygac_i_role.
INCLUDE TYPE ygac_i_role_rs.
TYPES END OF ty_table.

SQLite How to Include Records Where NULL in Objective C?

I’m attempting to count records that match specific criteria, including one field being null, but including the null clause results in no records being found.
If I output the contents of the field, it comes back as “(null)”. I’ve tried IS NULL and ISNULL, both of which appear that they should work when looking at other sources, but they both fail for me.
SELECT calls.contact_number, calls.contact_name, COUNT(notes.id) AS note_count

This returns no records, whereas I’m expecting it to return one.
Move the condition in the ON clause:

ON calls.id = notes.call_id AND notes.group_id IS NULL
WHERE calls.contact_number = "123"
GROUP BY calls.contact_number, calls.contact_name
After grabbing a copy of the database, the notes.group_id field was determined to be an integer type, and the record in question actually contained a 0.
The successful query ended up being

FROM calls LEFT JOIN notes
ON calls.id = notes.call_id
WHERE calls.contact_number = “123” AND (notes.group_id IS NULL OR notes.group_id = 0)

Not sure why the NSLog output of the returned value for group_id was ‘(null)’, some weird conversion?

nature of SELECT query in MVC and LINQ TO SQL

i am bit confused by the nature and working of query , I tried to access database which contains each name more than once having same EMPid so when i accessed it in my DROP DOWN LIST then same repetition was in there too so i tried to remove repetition by putting DISTINCT in query but that didn't work but later i modified it another way and that worked but WHY THAT WORKED, I DON'T UNDERSTAND ?
QUERY THAT DIDN'T WORK

Both queries are different. I am explaining you both query in SQL that will help you in understanding both queries.
Your first query is:

Your second query is:
(from n in EmployeeAtds select new {n.EmplID, n.EmplName}).Distinct()

Now you can see SQL query for both queries. First query is showing that you are implementing Distinct on all columns of table but in second query you are implementing distinct only on required columns so it is giving you desired result.
As per Scott Allen's Explanation

The docs for Distinct are clear – the method uses the default equality comparer to test for equality, and the default comparer sees 4 distinct object references. One way to get around this would be to use the overloaded version of Distinct that accepts a custom IEqualityComparer.
var names = (from n in DataContext.EmployeeAtds select new {n.EmplID, n.EmplName}).Distinct();
Turns out the C# compiler overrides Equals and GetHashCode for anonymous types. The implementation of the two overridden methods uses all the public properties on the type to compute an object's hash code and test for equality. If two objects of the same anonymous type have all the same values for their properties – the objects are equal. This is a safe strategy since anonymously typed objects are essentially immutable (all the properties are read-only).
Try this:

Semantical Error - Doctrine 2.0

I already wrote a sql query to get all the gift info for a specific couple

but it gives me the following error:
[Semantical Error] line 0, col 145 near 'pp ON reg.id': Error: Identification Variable p used in join path expression but was not defined before.
First of all, you should define join condition in your SQL statements after joins, not in WHERE clause. The reason is that it's really not efficient. So the query shoul look like:
SELECT g.id , g.price,
FROM gift g JOIN registry reg ON reg.gift_id = g.id
WHERE reg.couple_id = 1
But about your Doctrine query, You get error because you're defining joins in wrong way. Your query should more like:
$qb = $this->createQueryBuilder('g') // You don't have put "from" beacuse I assume you put this into GiftRepository and then Doctrine knows that should be \BBB\GiftBundle\Entity\Gift

Please treat this as pseudocode - I didn't check it works but it should like more like this.
One more thing - if your repository method returns object(s) of X entity you should put this method to XRepository.

symfony2 doctrine join

Okay, so i've got a query that i've researched and researched how to get this to work and for the life of me i cant!... perhaps i'm just doing this incorrectly and the minimal information ive found..
I've got a table named timeclock setup.. which has a field: noteBy_id in it which is an id to the user the record belongs to...
What I need to do now, is for the management side of things in the system.. I anticipate more than 1 company using this timeclock system, and as such I need to filter the results based on the company id.. In the user table, i have a field named parentcompany_id
So, lets see if I can express in words what I need to do..
I need to Select * from timeclock and left join user.parentcompany_id where timeclock.daydate < :start and where u.parentcompany = :pid
where start is: `date('Y-m-d 00:00:00');
I've setup this query:

I've looked and looked and can't find a solution to the error that I get which is:
An exception has been thrown during the rendering of a template ("[Semantical Error] line 0, col 112 near 'u ON u.id = t.noteBy_id': Error: Identification Variable Ecs\AgentManagerBundle\Entity\User used in join path expression but was not defined before.") in EcsCrmBundle:TimeClock:manager.html.twig at line 5.
and the query that gets output is:

which under normal circumstances would work perfectly... but in this, it just doesn't... Any ideas?
I've recently had to do it like this.. I'm guessing in this that your noteBy is a ManyToOne in the user table and you are wanting to have it filter the results by the company of the admin that is currently logged into your system..
So, adapting a join I had to write myself for such a task is easy enough. I personally like to use the QueryBuilder so this will be done in query builder..
Your first mistake in your query is the ->from('timeclock', 't') line. Because you have previously created your object with $qb = $em->getRepository('EcsCrmBundle:TimeClock'); $qb = $qb->createQueryBuilder('t'); you don't need the from in the query builder, as it will be generated for you.
The next issue, is the leftJoin and I'll explain why when I've shown you a working version.
And the last issue, preventing this from working how you want it - is a missing andWhere clause. So, lets take a look at a working query.

So because we've already created the object by using $qb = $qb->createQueryBuilder('t') we just select t and u
For the join, we're joining the timeclock table by the noteBy column, which is the user id from the user table. So, the first argument being the "from" alias. So, since we've aliased the timeclock table with t we use t.noteBy. The next argument in the leftjoin is the alias of the 2nd table, which is u in this case but can be anything.. The third argument for a leftJoin anyway - is the way you join it.. either a WITH or ON will work here. and the 4th argument, is the match you wish it to have.. in this case u.id must equal t.noteBy
You will see that I got rid of one of the andWhere, I did this because with the properly structured query you shouldn't need it. I did however add in the andWhere for the u.parentcompany since that is afterall what you are looking to filter by you should have it in a WHERE instead of as a match in the join itself.
The documentation is very limited in this, and it took me a while to figure it all out as well.. You, undoubtedly - like me, came to using doctrine from writing your queries by hand. And So since you seem to be just starting with Symfony (i am myself as well about 2 months in now), you're still in the hand-coding mindset. But with further time, you'll start understanding the DQL way of life. Try this query out and see what happens.
Ok, first you would need to relate entity Timeclock to Company. Whenever you want to join two entities in Doctrine they need to be related by some attribute (that is, table column).
I don't see any need for User entity in this query as all info is available through Company entity and you are not filtering down results based on any user properties.
You desired query should look something like this (more or less). I took liberty and ditched _id suffixes from entity attributes as they tend to cloud what is really going on. ;)

Also, I did inner-join (JOIN) as I think there could not be timeclock without it's company but feel free to change that to LEFT JOIN if that suits you better.
