Really hope i'll find an answer for this :-)
I started to write automated tests using webdriver+testNG and everything was fine. But now i created a new project and when i try to run it ( click on class->run as testNG test) i see an error message like:
An internal error occurred during: "Launching test".
java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\workspace\OriginalProject\testng.xml (The system cannot find the file specified) .
But I dont use the OriginalProject at all right now.
Seems that that path is still present in some place!?
If I start by clicking the correct testng.xml file , it works fine !?
any idea?
Check your testng settings at window->preferences->testng. You might have specified your default testng XML there and all projects wud try to use the same one.

I am sorry if this is not really a coding question (it depends on if its my code causing the problem I suppose).
I have seen this question: Tracking down intermittent 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object.' error on build
However, it has not been of much help (although if you read the comments, you will see that I thought it did help for a while there).
When I try publish my website, occasionally, I will get an error with no file or line reference:
Pre-compiling Web Site
Building directory '/App_Code/'.
Building directory '/'.: Publication (web): Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Pre-compilation Complete
------ Skipped Publish: Project X:\, Configuration: Debug Any CPU ------
I know the usual causes of "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" but this seems a bit different, isn't it supposed to be a runtime error? Not a build error?
What is weird is that it happens, seemingly at random (about 25%-33% of the time). I can try to publish it and have it fail. Then try again straight after, without changing anything and it works fine.
I started getting this error after moving some of my functions (VB.net btw) to a new file in the App_Code folder so they can be accessed by all pages of the site.
If you need any more info, please let me know.
Thanks,
EDIT: After further investigation, it seems to only happen if I try to publish the website within a few seconds of saving changes to any file within it. What could cause this?
The same error occurred for me to, I deleted the dlls of the custom controls in the web site that are already in the bin, then i published the web site, and succeeded
IF you have any custom/usercontrols in your project, they are actually running at design time and can give object ref errors. This can occur during builds too. In that case, a property is being referenced that is NOTHING and throws the error.
I had a similar problem with a Windows Form project.
Wherever I try to move a custom control on the windows form, and then try to save the form, VS2010 comes back with "Object not set to an instance of an object".
I suspected the error was deep down in the layers of abstraction in my inherited code, but couldn't work out how deep to go, without reviewing every line of code.
My solution to this problem is this.
Open up another instance of Visual Studio 2010
Menu: Debug | Attach to Process..
Search for "devenv.exe xxx YourApplicationName..." and select it
Click "Attach"
Menu: Debug | Exceptions..
Tick all the boxes in the thrown column, then "OK"
Your second instance of VS2010 is not debugging your first instance, including all the custom controls.
Return to the first instance of VS2010, and repeat the actions that caused the error in the first place, the second instance of VS2010 will break at the line of code that has the error.
You may want to look at this link there is a bug in vs2012

I have created a new build definition for TFS 2010. After building my C# solution I would like it to execute a couple of unit tests. These unit tests require an XML input file, so I have a [DeploymentItem] attribute to the test methods which provides the relative path the XML files. If I run the unit tests from within Visual Studio they pass ok.
When the unit tests get run following a build (via my build definition), they fail with: "Microsoft.BizTalk.TestTools.BizTalkTestAssertFailException: Input file does not exist..."
It would be great if I could get to a trace of what the build agent was trying to do, to help with troubleshooting.
Does anyone know how to get such a trace output? I guess I could increase the verbosity of the trace output from the main solution under test but I don't think that would give me any indication of where the build agent was looking for the test input XML or why?
Thanks
Rob
I found it! Needed to click the "View Log" link from the screen that's displayed following the build. I had been looking at the default view of "View Summary"
First of all sorry if the question is not very clear.
I am learning nHibernate from the summerofnhibernate.com, in the first chapter when I run a test project, I get the following error: Test method TestProject1.NHibernateDataProviderTestTest.CanGetCustomerByIdTest threw exception: NHibernate.HibernateException: problem parsing configuration : System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException: Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\PublicAssemblies;PrivateAssemblies\hibernate.cfg.xml'.
I have googled the problem, and the search says that the VS 2008 path is wrong(buggy), to place hibernate.cfg.xml in test project and adding the attribute: [TestMethod(), DeploymentItem("hibernate.cfg.xml")]
After having done this I still get the same problem.
But when I use Visual Studio 2010 I get the following error:
Test method TestProject1.NHibernateDataProviderTestTest.CanGetCustomerByIdTest threw exception:
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
looks like 2 different problems.
For the first place nhibernate.cfg.xml in the Project and give the path to new Configuration("Path to hibernate.cfg.xml") somewhere in the testsetup.
The Second looks like the getmethod returns null because it cant finde the Customer with given id in the database. If you use SQLite inMemory a typical captcha is, that each new Connection points to a different Database -> Open Sessions with sf.OpenSession(theOneConnection) or Session.Clear() instead of creating a new one.
Hope it helps
Basically , (depends on your question : How to Configure Test Deployment with the file LocalTestRun.testrunconfig?)
Here is the way that you can follow:
To select files or folders to deploy, in run configuration
In Solution Explorer, under Solution Items, double-click the run configuration file that you want to edit.
A dialog box that has a name such as .testrunconfig appears.
Click Deployment.
Under Additional files or directories to deploy, specify additional files or folders to be copied.
To do this,
click Add file to select files; this opens the Add Deployment Files dialog box.
You can also click Add Directory to select folders by using the Add Deployment Directory dialog box.
In the .testrunconfig dialog box, click Save and then click OK.
These deployment items will be copied to the deployment folder whenever this run configuration file is active.
Hope this will help.
I am very confused right now. I have VS2008 at my job right now and I have a weird behavior that I have been searching for a while now.
When I compile the project, it works fine, but in runtime I have an error saying object not defined or something like that. The problem is that the imports/using is missing in my class but why does it compile?
In fact, I want to be able to see that error when compiling not when running the webapp.
REEDITED: Here is an example. Lets say i want to use a typed list, I am declaring my object list(of int) for example without having added my imports (system.collection.generic) in the class. then I compile, it works and then I run it, it fails because of the imports missing. is this normal behavior or not?
REREEDITED: I just noticed that the DLL of all my references were not copied in my bin folders even though all of them are set to "Copy local = true". Is it possible that it has to do with our shared directory (all external dlls) being on a network drive (\server\shared). I am really out of ideas on this issue....
problem was because we were having the classes in the app_data folder
The answer to the current question - why you are getting this error - is that ASP.NET does not show many errors at compile-time. You will need to manually go through the application to verify that all pages work correctly. This is very common with ASP.NET development, due to the nature of the environment.
If you post the real errors (probably should be as another SO question), we can perhaps help you with them.
Remove all the dll, etc from bin...
rebuild the whole solution then run
It should run fine...
I have created a new VS2008 ASP.Net Web service project, with the default name WebService1. If I right click on the Service1.asmx file and select 'View in Browser' what are the processes that go on to make this happen? I am asking because I have a situation where when I run this from a visual studio project started in our development shell (which sets up a common build environment) I cannot get the web service to show up in the browser.
It starts the asp.net development server and creates a single file:
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\c43ddc22\268ae91b\hash\hash.web
but when I start it from a stand alone project i get a whole slew of files in here:
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\edad4eee\d198cf0e\App_Web_defaultwsdlhelpgenerator.aspx.cdcab7d2.vicgkf94.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\edad4eee\d198cf0e\service1.asmx.cdcab7d2.compiled
etc etc
I am trying to debug this but not really getting anywhere. i have inspected the output from VS but the only option I get is for the build output, which is basic and doesn't really contain any information that is useful. I have tried running both versions with DebugView running but no output there either.
I would like to know if there are any log files I could look at, or if anyone has any suggestions on how I might be able to debug what is going wrong here?
For completeness the output I get when it doesn't work is:
Parser Error
Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific parse error details and modify your source file appropriately.
Parser Error Message: Could not create type 'WebService1.Service1'.
Source Error:
Line 1:
Source File: /Service1.asmx Line: 1
Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3603; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3082
Ok, not sure that its perfect but I found a resolution to this issue. the problems seems to be that the development shell redirects the <OutputPath> of the projects visual studio is building, and this was causing problems as, although the dependencies of the web service project were being copied into the $(ProjectDir)Bin\ directory, the actual webservice dll itself was not. The solution (workaround?) seems to be to add this to the post build event command line:
xcopy /y "$(TargetPath)" "$(ProjectDir)Bin\"
Then i am able to right click on the .asmx file and select view in browser and everything works as expected.
Hope this might help someone else in the future. or maybe even me in another place and time.
