Display a value from the model and refresh it on change - ariatemplates

I have a property in my model:
this.setData({myProp: "Hello World!"})
What I want is only display it in my template and refresh it when it changes.
The solution I currently have is to use a section, bind its refresh to the property and display the property in a macro. My issue is that I feel there should be another, simpler way to do it. It's IMHO too heavy (15ish lines), especially compared to angular's {{myProp}}
Does anyone have a simple and elegant implementation?

Ok, I just had to use the text widget.

Can't get to dynamically style one item from a v-for vue 3

I am trying to get the active item from this menu list to display in a different style. When I reload the page, the style gets applied for a split second, then disappears and all items share the exact same style.
There is a similar thread saying the solution is to actually have the item available as a data property in that component. I have tried that too, and it would not work. It makes more sense to have all the data from a computed property since I am using Vuex for data storing.
The template:

The current_topic is updated with the selectTopic method in this component. It all works fine, except I can't get the current_topic to have a distinctive style.
Oh, on the styles I simply have .topic.active {border:yellowgreen solid 0.5em;}. If I do topic:active then the style gets applied when I click but only for the time I am clicking (also if I hold), but it does not get applied when reload not even for a split second.

Just as a conclusion / closing of this thread. The code I presented is correct. The problem had to do with a getter which was converting the current_topic into a title. This is why topic and current did not match inside the class binding. I figure it is still worth leaving the thread since it might be helpful for somebody else dealing with class binding inside a v-for.

Best Practices to implement a menu system in a QML game?

I'm relatively new to QML/QtQuick 2 and I quite enjoy it. To start mastering it I am implementing a small fullscreen game. My idea is to have the (simple) game and when the uses presses up the ESC key to pop-up a graphical menu with some settings.
Now I have all the basics running but I'm not completely sure which is the best Declarative way of managing the menu and passing keyboard focus back and forth.
Is it better to statically create the menu and make it hidden in my main file, like this:

and then set it to "visible" when I need it? Or defer loading it and use Loader and create a new instance? I prefer to have it declared in my QML code for cleanness, but what is the best practice here? Or is there some component to switch between views that I'm completely missing? I could find very little information and examples on this topic. Thanks!
Your question is kinda broad and could lead to opinionated answers, but since it's a topic close to my heart, I thought I'd try to give some advice.
Loader
I tend to only use Loader when the item I need to load is only relevant under certain circumstances. For example, if a document is open that doesn't support a certain feature, then the UI element that represents that feature can be put into a Loader. A benefit of this (besides a (usually) very small increase in performance) is that it avoids the need to add lots of null checks for that feature. For example, if you don't use a Loader in this case, you might end up with a lot of code that looks like this:

With a Loader, you control when the item is loaded, such that it's only loaded when the optional feature is enabled. Then the code becomes much nicer:

Popup
For an in-game menu, I'd use a Popup. This is good if you want the user to be able to see the game in the background, though you can also obscure that with an overlay, if you wanted.
StackView
If you don't want to use a popup, then I'd suggest StackView. You should probably be using this for each screen in your game anyway, as it is a perfect fit for it.
Here's how I managed to do a Menu System:
I used Component to create a Component and createObject() to turn it into an instance of that component.

How can I use Caliburn.Micro conventions to set a button's text and its action?

If I have a button in my View named, say, Save, then I can add a Save property to my ViewModel, and Caliburn.Micro will automatically bind it to my button's Content. For example:

Or I can add a Save method to my ViewModel, and Caliburn.Micro will execute that method when the button is clicked. For example:

But what if I want to do both? C# doesn't let me declare a method and a property with the same name. Can I use conventions to both set the button's Content and the action to perform when it's clicked?
(I know I can manually bind one or the other, but I'd rather use conventions if it's practical.)
This is a common need, so you'd think it would be built into Caliburn.Micro, but it doesn't seem to be. I've seen some code that extends the conventions to support this (and I'll post it as an answer if nothing better comes along), but it's a workaround with some bizarre quirks -- so I'd like to hear if anyone else has made this work more cleanly.
Note: I did see this similar question, but it seems to be about whether this is a good idea or not; I'm asking about the mechanics. (I'll reserve judgment on whether it's a good idea until I've seen the mechanics. (grin))

Flex Truncating Button Labels

First and foremost, I apologize for any vagueness in this question. At this point, I'm simply trying to get some new ideas of things to try in order to diagnose this bug.
Anyway, the problem I'm having is with an application that's using a custom moduleloader. That moduleloader has been compiled into an swc and the moduleloader is being instantiated via its namespace. This all works perfectly fine. The problem I'm encountering is specific to mx:button controls used within modules. For whatever reason, their labels are being truncated so, for example, Sign In is showing up with an ellipsis, as Sign ...
After quite a bit of fooling around I have been able to establish the following:
This problem only seems to occur within modules. If a button control is used in the main mxml, the label does not get truncated.
The button control whose label is being truncated does not have a width specified (setting its width to 100% or a specific pixel width doesn't fix the issue)
The button control is using the default padding (messing with the padding by setting left and right to 5 or any other value doesn't help matters either).
We are not using any embedded fonts so I've ruled that out as a possibility as well.
mx:CheckBox and mx:LinkButton are equally impacted by this problem although mx:CheckBox also seems to not want to show its checkbox, it just shows the truncated label.
A potential side affect of this is that attaching a dataprovider to mx:ComboBox causes the combobox control to throw a drawing error but I'm not entirely certain that it's related to the above problem.
One interesting thing I did find while perusing the net for an answer was a mention of fontContext and its relationship to IFlexModuleFactory. There's no specification for fontContext within our implementation of moduleloader so I'm not entirely certain if this could be the issue. In any case, if anyone has any ideas, it would be hugely appreciated. On the other hand, if you know exactly what ails me and can provide me with an answer, I might just wet myself with excitement. It's late. I'm tired. I NEED my Flex app to play nice.

What else can potentially override the default behavior of labels if no CSS has been implemented?
Has anyone encountered a problem with inheritance being lost while using a custom implementation of moduleloader?

I'm not sharing any code with this question simply because I'd have to share the entire application and, unfortunately, I can't do that. Again, I'm not looking for the end all, be all solution, just some suggestions of things to look out for if anyone has any ideas.
I've been dealing with this issue myself, off and on and in various forms, for a year, and while I haven't figured out just what's causing it yet, there's clearly a mismeasurement happening somewhere along the line.
What I have been able to to, though, is work around it, essentially by subclassing button-type controls (in my case, Button, LinkButton, PopUpButton, et. al.) and assigning their textField members instances of a UITextField extension whose truncateToFit element simply returns false in all cases:

I agree it feels like a workaround, that the component architecture ought to handle all this more gracefully, and that it's probably something we're both overlooking, but it works; hopefully it'll solve your problem as you search for a more definitive solution. (Although personally, I'm using it as-is, and I've moved on to other things -- time's better spent elsewhere!)

I've used the custom button and link button class solutions and still ran into problems - but found a workaround that's worked every time for me.
Create a css style that includes the font you'd like to use for you label. Be sure to check 'embed this font' right under the text selection dropdown. Go back and apply the style to your button (or your custom button, depending on how long you've been bashing your hear against this particular wall), and voila!
Or should be voila...

I've had some success preventing Flex's erroneous button-label truncation by setting labelPlacement to "bottom", as in:
theButton.labelPlacement = ButtonLabelPlacement.BOTTOM;
Setting the label placement doesn't seem to help prevent truncation in some wider button sizes, but for many cases it works for me.
In cases where you can't use a bottom-aligned button label (such as when your button has a horizontally aligned icon), janusz's approach also seems to work. here's a version of janusz's .text reassignment technique in ActionScript rather than MXML:

The only downside to this approach is you lose the ellipsis, but in my case I considered that a welcome feature.

How to prevent a hyperlink from linking

Is it possible to prevent an asp.net Hyperlink control from linking, i.e. so that it appears as a label, without actually having to replace the control with a label? Maybe using CSS or setting an attribute?
I know that marking it as disabled works but then it gets displayed differently (greyed out).
To clarify my point, I have a list of user names at the top of my page which are built dynamically using a user control. Most of the time these names are linkable to an email page. However if the user has been disabled the name is displayed in grey but currently still links to the email page. I want these disabled users to not link.
I know that really I should be replacing them with a label but this does not seem quite as elegant as just removing the linking ability usings CSS say (if thats possible). They are already displayed in a different colour so its obvious that they are disabled users. I just need to switch off the link.
This sounds like a job for JQuery. Just give a specific class name to all of the HyperLink controls that you want the URLs removed and then apply the following JQuery snippet to the bottom of your page:

All of the HyperLink controls with the class name "NoLink" will automatically have all of their URLs removed and the link will appear to be nothing more than text.
A single line of JQuery can solve your problem.
I'm curious on what it is you which to accomplish with that. Why use a link at all?
Is it just for the formatting? In that case, just use a <span> in HTML and use stylesheets to make the format match the links.
Or you use the link and attach an onClick-Event where you "return false;" which will make the browser not do the navigation - if JS is enabled.
But: Isn't that terribly confusing for your users? Why create something that looks like a link but does nothing?
Can you provide more details? I have this feeling that you are trying to solve a bigger problem which has a way better solution than to cripple a link :-)
A Hyperlink control will render as a "a" "/a" tag no matter what settings you do. You can customize a CSS class to make the link look like a normal label.
Alternatively you can build a custom control that inherits from System.Web.UI.WebControls.HyperLink, and override the Render method

Could be a bit overkill, but it will work for your requirements.
Plus I find is usefull to have a base asp:CustomHyperlink asp:CustomButton classes in my project files. Makes it easier to define custom behaviour throughout the project.
If you merely want to modify the appearance of the link so as not to look like a link, you can set the CSS for your "a" tags to not have underlines:

Though I would advise against including "hover" here because there will be no other way to know that it's a link.
Anyway I agree with #pilif here, this looks like a usability disaster waiting to happen.
If you mean to stop the link from activating, the usual way is to link to "javascript:void(0);", i.e.:

If you are using databind in asp.net handle the databinding event and just don't set the NavigateUrl if that users is disabled.
Have you tried just not setting the NavigateUrl property? If this isn't set, it may just render as a span.

CSS solution to make tags with no href (which is what asp:HyperLink will produce if NavigateURL is bound to null/empty string) visually indistinguishable from the surrounding text:

Unfortunately, this won't tell screen readers not to read it out as a link - though without an href, it's not clickable, so I'm hoping it already won't be identified as such. I haven't had the chance to test it though.
(If you also want to do the same to links with href="", as well as those missing an href, you would need to add pointer-events:none as well, since otherwise an empty href will reload the page. This definitely leaves screen readers still treating it as a link, though.)
In the OP's use case, if you still have the href being populated from the database but have a boolean value that indicates whether the link should be a 'real' link or not, you should use that to disable the link, and add a:disabled to the selector list above. Then disabled links will also look like plain text rather than a greyed-out link. (Disabling the link will also provide that information to screen readers, so that's better than just using pointer-events: none and a class.)
A note of caution - if you add these sorts of rules globally rather than for a specific page, remember to watch out for cases where an tag has no (valid) href, but you are providing a click handler - you still need those to look/act like links.
