Problem:
I have been trying to integrate minification of javascript and css files in our VS2010 (.net 4.) projects. From what I hear, .net 4.5 and VS2012 will have minification build into the editor, so it will be as easy as setting a flag it will work. Unfortunately we are sill on VS2010 (.net 4.0).
Let me explain what I want to do and what I dont want to do.
I dont want to do big setups with classes/config file(s)/etc just to minify because all that stuff will have to be loaded on our build machine and even the build xml files might have to be modifies to make it work. Also, once we go to vs2012 and .net 4.5 all these configs/classes/etc will have to be discarded because vs2012 will have the build in functionality.
Here is what I think might be the best option. Since I am using the ScriptManager and it can already pull either a .debug.js (non-minified) or a .js (minified) script based on the build type, it seems all i need to do is to have some sort of (pre?) build event that will re-build a non-minified .js file into a minified one. Obviously the build event will have to call a minication module which would have to be installed on local computer (the YUI Compressor seems very nice). The module would update the minified .js file.
I have been reading about this, but I am getting a little bit lost. There are a lot of third party tools with bunch of setup and classes which I do not want to add.
Did anyone do something similar as I explained about?
If not what is the next best simple solution?
(By the way, if you are going to say move to VS2012/4.5, thats not a solution for us at this point)

I would just like to explain what I did so that it may help someone in the future.
I installed the Microsoft Ajax Minifier
Created a batch file to add minifer to ENVIRONMENT PATH variables: setx path /m "%PATH%;C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Microsoft Ajax Minifier"
Added the following pre-build events into my project:
ajaxmin $(ProjectDir)Script.js -out $(ProjectDir)Script.min.js -clobber
If Script.min.js does not exist, it will be created by the build event, but it will not be added to the project (not sure how to do that through the events).
When you add a new script file, mynewscript.js, just create a second blank file called mynewscript.min.js and add an pre-build event for it.
Using this approach the only thing you have to do to the build machine is run the Microsoft Ajax Minifier setup package and the batch file. Thats it everything else will be part of your pre-build events.

by using this you would be able to use this third party tool as the minifier
after downloading the tool you have 2 options
1. edit the MSBUILD file to include building the js as per build event
OR 2. to attach this tool to VS and assign a key compbination to it.. this way you would be able to minify whenever you want just like we do F5 OR Cntrl-Shift-B
Attaching to VS is easy just to to external tools and in the Tools menu and add this tool with the required params

We plan on using SASS instead of plain CSS for our SharePoint project very soon. While testing and trying to set everything up, I ran into some problems:
We're using Visual Studio 2015 and on my developer machine I installed the Web Compiler Extension to compile the .scss-files and partial files to a regular .css-file.
That worked very nicely but the problem is, that there will be a few developers working simultaneously on the styles. I want to avoid merging the resulting css-file each time someone tries to check in something into source control (we're using Team Foundation Server).
Since there is a build running every time someone is checking in their changes, and to deploy the resulting solution to the nightly build machine, the idea was to somehow include the SASS compiler in the build definition. This way the more readable scss-files get merged and the build creates the resulting css-file to include it in the solution.
Maybe I'm thinking too complicated, but I just couldn't get that to work so far.
Any ideas how I can achieve that?
(Maybe I should also mention that none of the dev machines got any internet connection)
If you're building an MVC app, you can use MVC's bundling feature along with the SASS NuGet package. And, be sure to enable minification. There's a UseNativeMinification property on SassAndScssSettings. That way you don't need to deal with merging the css file when you get latest or check in. Another way is running a script (e.g with PowerShell task) on the server that to install the gulp components and then call the sass compile task to compile the SASS. Refer to Powershell build - compiling SASS for details.
I am taking over an ASP.NET Web Application using C# and all the code (including C# source) was given to me without the solution file (something.sln) so whenever opening the Web Application in Visual Studio 2017 I have to open by "Folder..." instead of by "Project/Solution...". Once open, I am able to make the necessary changes to the code behind files such as Default.aspx.cs or somethingElse.aspx.cs, but when I try to test the code changes by going to Run > Start Without Debugging, I couldn't find the Run menu option; I see the Build Solution button but it's disabled (greyed out).
Every time I try navigating directly to my site at http://dev.mydomain.com. The code changes I made did not get compiled neither.
So how do I get the Run or Build menu option enabled?
The easiest way to correct this issue is probably to create a new, empty ASP.NET WebForms project (and a new solution file as well if necessary) and copy your code files into it. You can then tell Visual Studio to "include" those files in the project.
You may (or may not) need to make the odd other minor adjustment too but those basic steps should get you started.
Not sure if this is related, but adding the sln file to the git ignore removed its visibility from VisualStudio. I had to open the project csproj file in VisualStudio.
THen on close, the prompt was asking me to save a new SLN file with the same solution name i was looking for. I was then able to go to the directory with the original solution in it, and then I was able to open it again in Visual Studio.
For all those who come to this post in the future, I would check your gitignore files and see if they ignored the sln file.
Our application registers events OnInit. When developers create a new aspx file from the visual studio template, it has AutoEventWireup="true". This leads to event handlers being registered twice and run twice.
Is there an easy way to cause the compile, build or other post build step to fail when the directives are set "wrong".
I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and TeamCity. I'm open to running any technology as a postbuild step.
You could precompile your site. Precompiling involves compiling the aspx and ascx files aswell as the .cs. It will make your site faster and it ensures things hook up a bit better, the downside is you cant change the aspx or ascx after you have compiled them.

You could try integrating StyleCop with TeamCity, and create a custom StyleCop rule that checks for this. Not sure how difficult it would be, but it's what comes to mind. See this question about using StyleCop with TeamCity.
Also, as suggested by Erix, update your templates to prevent this from being the default behavior.
Is there a tool or some general approach to packaging all the files of an ASP.NET application into binary form to prevent modification once its deployed? I am thinking there would be a set of signed binaries and a config file for settings that we allow the customer to modify. Has anyone attempted this, is it even possible?
I would pay a reasonable amount for a slick commercial product that did this with minimal hassle.

Sorry, from the answers I can see that I wasn't clear. I meant literally packaging ALL files, not just the code files. This means aspx, scripts, images etc. I'm not trying to prevent reverse engineering... this is a supportability issue, i.e. to avoid dealing with problems brought about by customer messing with the files.
If you made a web application project than you can compile your code into a single dll file. You can find it in the bin folder.
Just use aspnet_compiler.exe to precomple everything and then use aspnet_merge.exe to roll up all of the compiled assemblies into a single assembly. You can use an obfuscation tool like DotFuscator if you want to make it more difficult to reverse-engineer. Visual Studio pro and up include a "lite" edition of Dotfuscator that you can use for this.
Your codebehind files will be compiled in a single dll as ZippyV already mentioned. The aspx files will get deployed normally on the webserver.
But still, your dll files can be disassembled quite easily. So to be sure you have to use an obfuscator.
If you mean ALL files including the aspx you could also consider ngen. It precompiles everything into a dll so you can't even get at the aspx pages.
Although, ngen was designed to get rid of the JIT compiling feature of the framework and is definitely not a generally recommended approach but it may work in your case well.
From VS2008 select the menu option "Tools" and then "Dotfuscator Community Edition". You will have a "Learn More" link after it starts up.
I also sign mine using SN.exe to make it have a strong name. Given all this, I think it is complicated enough to figure out a system if you are given the source code and help.... so I don't worry about it anymore.
maybe Dotfuscator your customer won't be able to modify it nor reverse-engineer it :)
Is it possible to exclude a folder in a web project from being published? We've got some documentation and scripts that included in a particular project folder, and are added to the project, but when I do a VS publish, I don't want them to go up to the production server.
I know they shouldn't be in the project, but I thought I'd find a workaround before I try to convince the owner to modify the way he's doing things.
Old question, but I found if I mark the folder as hidden in Windows Explorer, it doesn't show/publish in your solution.
This is good for example to stop original photoshop images being included in uploads which aren't used and are big. Anything more complex though you'll probably want to write your own publish tool.
This doesn't answer your question, exactly, but my feeling is that unless you are a single developer publishing to a server, you would be better off doing builds on a dedicated workstation or server using MSBuild (or some other building and deploying solution) directly (and thereby would be able to very granularly control what goes up to production). MSBuild can not only build, but using some extensions (including open source types), it can also deploy. Microsoft has a product called MSDeploy in beta, and that might be an even better choice, but having no experience with it, I cannot say for certain.
In our situation, we have a virtual workstation as a build box, and all we have to do is double click on the batch file that starts up an MSBuild project. It labels all code using VSS, gets latest version, builds the solution, and then deploys it to both servers. We deploy exactly what we want to deploy and nothing more. We're quite happy with it.
The only downside, if it could be considered a downside, is that at least one of us had to learn how to use MSBuild. VS itself uses MSBuild.
For the files you don't want to go, loop at the properties and set the 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'
This option is not available for directories, however.
Can you not exclude them from the project through visual studio to stop them being published. They will the still exist in the filesystem
The only way that you can do this to my knowledge would be to exclude it from the project, do the publish, then re-include it in the project. That can be an issue.
There are probably much better ways to solve this problem but when we publish a build for our dev servers, we'll run a batch file when the build is complete to remove the un-needed folders and web.configs (so we don't override the ones that are already deployed).
According to http://www.mahingupta.com/mahingupta/blog/post/2009/12/04/AspNet-website-Exclude-folder-from-compilation.aspx you can just give the folder the "hidden" attribute in windows explorer and it won't publish. I tested this and it works for me.
Seems like a straightforward solution for quick and dirty purposes, but I don't think it will carry through our version control (mercurial).
Select all the files that should not be published.
Go to Properties
Set
Build Action -> None
Have to repeat the process for each sub-directory.
