I am using a fileupload object on my user interface (.net). I would like it to select only specific file types when it searches for files and I would also like the path not be cleared out of it upon PostBack of the page. Any suggestions??
There are many file upload options that work in .NET. For a .NET web project, I like to use Dean Brettle's NeatUpload, which is free, and can select specific types. Unlike the built-in .NET FileUpload control, it also will show progress, which is a nice thing for users loading large files.

Create a project containing only your user control ("usercontrol222.ascx") and grab the control's dll from the deployment of your new project. Step 3: Use the Publish Command to Precompile the Site
The next step is to use the new
Publish command to precompile your
site and turn your user control into a
potential custom control. You'll find
the command under Build / Publish Web
Site. In the Publish dialog, do the
following:
Pick a Target Location. This is the location on your hard drive that your
site will be precompiled to.
Deselect "Allow this precompiled site to be updatable". In updatable
mode, only the code behind file (if
any) would get compiled, and the ascx
would be left unprocessed. This is
useful in some scenarios, but is not
what you want here since you want the
resulting DLL to be self-contained.
Select "Use fixed naming and single page assemblies". This will guarantee
that your user control will be
compiled into a single assembly that
will have a name based on the ascx
file. If you don't check this option,
your user control could be compiled
together with other pages and user
controls (if you had some), and the
assembly would receive a random name
that would be more difficult to work
with.
Step 4: Finding the Resulting Custom Control
Now, using the Windows
Explorer or a command-line window,
let's go to the directory you
specified as the target so we can see
what was generated. You will see a
number of files there, but let's focus
on the one that is relevant to our
goal of turning the user control into
a custom control.
In the "bin" directory, you will find
a file named something like
App_Web_MyTestUC.ascx.cdcab7d2.dll.
You are basically done, as this file
is your user control transformed into
a custom control! The only thing
that's left to do is to actually use
it.
You cannot. User controls are for the simplified scenario where you do not want to create a custom control. They have the disadvantage that the .ascx file and any other artifacts (images, styles, etc) must be included in each web site that uses the user control.
If you need complete reuse between projects, then you need to create a custom control. That's not actually that hard, if you directly translate the user control into a custom control.

I'm working on an ASP.NET web application for our corporate intranet users. I have a form where a user should provide a path to the file on the local network (something like "\localServer\someFolder\someFile.ext") without uploading the actual file. The issue is that users don't want to type the whole file path and want to use some kind of visual browse dialog.
The standard HTML <input type=file> element allows to browse for a file, but most of the browsers (except for IE) don't allow to access file's full path, so I think it should be done by some external component like Silverlight, Flash, Java applet etc.
I tried to do it with Silverlight, but I'm getting a SecurityException when trying to access file's full path using Silverlight's OpenFileDialog class.
This java applet http://jumploader.com/demo_images.html seems to do something similar to what I'm looking for, but it's focused on uploading files - I only need to be able to get file's full path and pass it to the server as a string.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can use their Custom File Content Provider to hook the GUI to your server's file system.

This should be possible with Flash's uploading capabilities. SWFUpload has an API that you may be able to access from JavaScript to extract the selected file name without actually uploading anything. See docs here, for example getFile():
getFile is used to retrieve a File Object from the queue. The file retrieved by passing in a file id (the id property from a file object) or a file index (the index property from a file object).
I have a website which uses a web user control... well, basically all over the place. It's even included in other web user controls.
So I thought I could just upload the new source and it would recompile on the fly and be fine, but instead every page or control that uses it complains about a type mismatch. Because it is used in so many places, it very quickly becomes easier to just update the entire website. (Or at least it would if I didn't need to go through our change management process for that...)
So is there something I'm missing? Isn't there any way to upload a web user control and have it recompile like when you update a single web page?
I think it is recompiling, it just takes a bit and you have a conflict with the mismatched .ascx and .ascx.cs files in Temporary ASP.NET Files while it recompiles. I could be wrong about this. Personally, I've had better success if I always upload both the .ascx and .ascx.cs files together.
I would think that if you pushed these items you should be good... any less and you might have issues:
bin contents - this will include your code changes to the user control and if the assembly version changes you will want to include any .dll that use it, I have run into issues to many times by trying to push just a single .dll that is in the bin.
.ascx file
I don't think you would need to push any other .aspx or .ascx files.
I have a web page where i have an ASP.NET file upload control to upload files from client machine to Server.Now i want to do the uploading n number of times.Ex : I want to upload 100 files from my local pc to server.The 100 file names i can read from an excel file in my program.But is there any way to assign this file to the file upload control ?
No, as a security feature, FilUpload controls do not allow you to set what to download (imagine if you sign on to a website, and it is set to upload a passwords file or something).
Now there is probably another control, or a way to code around this, buut the FileUpload control will not allow it.
I would recommend using the jQuery Multifile Uploader which would take care of a UI (if you need one). And the actual uploads with Free ASP Uploads which takes care of the actual file transfer. Though it sounds like you are tkaing care of the programs programatically, so you can skip the multifule and just work with free asp upload.
You'll have to make your own Flash object or something to accomplish this, the basic HTML/ASP.Net controls won't let you do what you're looking for.
This will require creating some kind of an active or installable control. In order to get around the security hole of doing this, you're ultimately going to have to be able to execute code on the machine to select and upload the file.
And at that point, you're platform specific, so...
I would strongly suggest that instead of trying to have a web site automatically upload files for you, that you make a WinForms utility to accomplish this task and upload the files wherever you need, communicate with the web site over web services, etc.
This is a security restriction, you cant script the file selection of an upload box as it would allow hackers to write scripts to steal files off your computer.
You could use this silverlight upload utility which is my list of "things to use when I get the chance".
It has a nice UI and supports uploading many files at once. I originally tracked it down doing some research for a photography website that we were quoting for but that project fell through.

It also has full source code included so even if the control's developers abandon it you still have the choice to edit it yourself.
I am working on a simple portal application using the ASP.NET membership and login controls. I would like to use the PasswordRecovery control to send emails containing forgotten passwords, however my portal requires localization. I have an existing Content Management System that I am pulling the localized strings out of and I would like to link the PasswordRecovery control to that system.
But, it appears that the PasswordRecovery control will ONLY accept a .txt file for the email body...the property is PasswordRecovery1.MailDefinition.BodyFileName
I do not want to use a file on disk, I would like to use the localized content in my CMS.
Is there any way to do this? It occurred to me that I might be able to use the SendingMail event to send my OWN email through the normal System.Net namespace, but that seems sorta cludgy...
Any thoughts?

Try handling the SendingMail event of the PasswordRecovery control. In that event, set the e.Message.Body and e.Message.Subject properties to your localized text.
