Displaying an image and automatically re-size it - qt

I can't quite figure out what the best way of displaying an image is in my particular case, so hopefully someone on here has a few tips.
I want to display an image that gets re-sized automatically to fit inside the space that is available. I currently do this by creating a class derived from QLabel that implements void resizeEvent(QResizeEvent*) where I do a QPixmap::scaled to re-size the image. The problem is that this only works when the widget is enlarged because the widget doesn't get a resizeEvent when I try to make the widget smaller. I guess that because I set the image to the same size as the widget, it isn't allowed to be sized smaller again? I guess I could try to create a smaller image therefor introducing a sort of "border" around the image which would perhaps allow re-size events to occur when making the area smaller. Any thoughts?

resizeEvent is sent whenever size is changed. It doesn't matter whether it is enlarged or not.
But you can set Policy and Max/Min size to constraint widget in shrinking/enlarging. So if you have your widget not getting resizeEvent AND it doesn't shrink either, then look at your size policy and min width/height. If it shrinks but you doesn't have resizeEvent then you have some error in you logic, I believe.
Alternatively you can use paintEvent for image painting and use QWidget::rect() for your widget width/height.

Try changing the size policy of the label to QSizePolicy::Preferred.

Having trouble resizing a QLabel in a QScrollArea

I'm trying to follow the example at the below link to have a picture (in a qlabel) shown in a scrollable area.

I'm using Qt Designer to make the ui instead of hardcoding everything. So I have a QLabel, in a QWidget (with a grid layout assigned to it), in a QScrollArea.
From the tutorial, they state the following for the sizepolicy of the QLabel:
We set imageLabel's [QLabel] size policy to ignored, making the users able to scale the image to whatever size they want when the Fit to Window option is turned on. Otherwise, the default size policy (preferred) will make scroll bars appear when the scroll area becomes smaller than the label's minimum size hint.
Setting it to ignored fits to the window, as expected and as stated. Setting it to preferred provides scroll bars when the image is larger than the scroll area, also as expected and as stated. My issue is that when the sizepolicy is set to preferred, the resize function of the QLabel doesn't work. It always stays at the default size of the loaded image. The only way that I'm able to get the resize function to work is when I don't assign a layout/break the layout to the widget in the QScrollArea, but then no scrollbars will appear when the image is larger than the QScrollArea.
Does anyone have any ideas of how to make the resize function and scrollbars work at the same time?

How to set the desired size of a QMainWindow with QScrollArea?

I am working on a project where I have to display a pretty large (vertically) main Widget.
In the initial Version of my GUI it was just added as the central Widget of a QMainWindow, which caused the Problem that on small screen resolutions the controls on the Bottom of the Widget are unreachable.
To solve this i wrapped a QScrollArea around the main Widget, but now the main window is always relatively small even if it doesn't have to.
What do i need to change so the Main Windows (vertical) size is large enough to show all the contents unless it would be too large for the screen resolution? Also I don't want it to be stretched, so simply always using the whole vertical screen resolution is not an option. Ideally the size should be fixed to the size needed by the contents (w/o the scroll area) and only smaller where needed.
Overriding the sizeHint method did only resulted in a small enlargement of the Window and setting the minimal height brings me back to the beginning where some of the controls are not assessable on small resolutions.
Since i am new to QT I am actually out of ideas how to google the solution because most Solutions I can find are about sizing components inside a Window and not the Window itself.
By default a QScrollArea will not attempt to expand to fit its contents. In order to do this you will need to re-implement QScrollArea's sizeHint() to return the size of QScrollArea's child widgets.
In your question it sounds like you were trying to re-implement MainWindow's sizeHint? re-implementing sizeHint on the top-level window will have no effect as sizeHint designed for use with widgets inside layouts.

Qt Layout, resize to minimum after widget size changes

Basically I've got a QGridLayout with a few widgets in it. The important ones are 2 labels, which I use for drawing images to the screen. Well, if the user wants, he can change the resolution of the incoming images, thus, forcing the Labels to resize.
Let's assume the initial size of the label is 320x240. The user changes the VideoMode to 640x480, the label and the entire GUI resizes perfectly. But when the user switches back to 320x240, the label shrinks, but the Layout/Window does NOT.
I've played around with sizePolicies and sizeHints, and resize(0,0), but nothing did the trick. Could somebody help me with this?
Here some screenshots to clarify the problem:
You need to set the size constraint of the layout holding all your widgets to "SetFixedSize". Although the name doesn't sound like it will work, it ensures that your layout will only use the space it needs. You will not have the problem like you do in your second screenshot.
Example:
mainLayout.setSizeConstraint(QLayout::SetFixedSize);
QLayout::setSizeConstraint(QLayout::SetFixedSize) solves this problem well when you prefer keeping your widget's size fixed at all times--that is, if you'd like it to always be fixed to its "packed" size (which may still vary as the child widgets change size). That is what the "fixed" means there: "fixed" to the correct size, even as the latter varies. (In Qt terms, what I'm calling the "packed" size is simply the widget's sizeHint.)
But a constraint may be too strong a solution in some instances. In particular, if you apply it to a top-level window, then the user will not be free to resize the window. If you don't like that, you can instead perform the "set size to sizeHint" operation instantaneously each time it's needed, rather than imposing it as an unrelenting constraint. The way to do that is to call QWidget::adjustSize().

Note that if the container whose children are changing size is not the top-level window, then adjustSize() may have to be called recursively on the container and its parents. (In my case I had to do that, anyway. I also tried the size-constraint scheme, and found that applying the constraint at only the topmost level was successful in compacting all levels. I haven't enough knowledge of Qt to comment usefully on these observations, so I merely share them.)
You need to store the original size of your widget parent window before applying any changes to the layout and restore it when the user switches back to the original.
Notice that you need to work with the widget parent window size and not the widget parent size.
in your widget before applying the layout changes:
minimumWindowSize = this->window().size();
when you finished reorganizing the widget to the compact size
this->window().resize(minimumWindowSize);
So that is exactly what i'm doing in mu project.
Resolution os doesn't matter. I have only to have a widget for rendering video, or image in your case.

Qt QHboxLayout cell size ssues

For those of you who haven't been reading my Qt questoins, I am learning Qt for a project. I have only limited experience with GUI design at all, and not in Qt.
I've got a horizontal layout that I want to populate with some buttons. I can feed these buttons in just fine, but my formerly-square buttons are stretched horizontally to take up more space.
I want to let the layout manager determine the best way to size these buttons, but I also want their original proportions to remain intact. For instance, if I start would with 32X32 buttons that need to shrink to fit all of them in the layout, I want them to shrink proportionally so that the width to height scale is maintained. 20X20, 16X16, 12X12 would all be just fine, but 24X16 would be an example of dimensions that are unacceptable.
I've tinkered with size policies on the buttons and stretch options. I'm not seeing, even after reading the QPushButton and QHboxLayout classes how to do this. How is it accomplished?

As long as I understand the question correctly, I think what you want is QBoxLayout::addStretch(). This will add a spacer object that fills the unused space. So the buttons will have their ideal size and the spacer will fill the rest. You can try experimenting with this in Designer, it's easier than the write/compile/run cycle.
You should take a look at the answers to this question. This is a recap of my answer there.
You need to create a custom derivative of QLayoutItem, which overrides bool hasHeightForWidth() and int heightForWidth( int width ) to preserve the aspect ratio. You could either pass the button in and query it, or you could just set the ratio directly. You'll also need to make sure the widget() function returns a pointer to the proper button.
Once that is done, you can add a layout item to a layout in the same manner you would a widget. So when your button gets added, change it to use your custom layout item class.
I haven't actually tested any of this, so it is a theoretical solution at this point. I don't know of any way to do this solution through designer, if that was desired.

How do I enable autoresizing for a Flex UIComponent?

I have a class which extends UIComponent and draws directly onto a Sprite contained within. Currently I'm (probably incorrectly) listening to the Event.RESIZE event and drawing the contents when the width and height are non-zero. The problem is that even though I've passed percentage widths to the instance tag, it doesn't appear to be resized along with other Flex components on the page, certainly the resize event isn't being fired at all.
I've hacked it for the moment by binding the width and height to a container which does resize, but how should I really be handling this?

It turns out I was setting the width and height somewhere in the redraw method (I have no recollection of why I did this!). I shall go hang my head in shame now...
I think you need to provide more information. I'm doing exactly the same, and it works smoothly for me. Perhaps the answer lies somewhere else: e.g. exactly what type of container do you use? Isn't it possible that the space gained/lost on resizing gets allocated to some other component within the cointainer? Try substituting your own component with an mx:Box with some colored background, and see if that resizes with the container.
