I can't seem to get any ASP.NET sites to run under IIS8 on Windows 8. Under IIS Express they are fine, but I've:
Installed IIS8
Installed ASP.NET 3.5 and 4.5 features in IIS
Created a valid application pool
Added a new Application in IIS manager pointing to my site
But I get:
HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error
The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.

Any ideas?
ASP.Net applications come pre-wired with a handlers section in the web.config.
By default, this is set to readonly within feature delegation within IIS.
Take a look in IIS Manager, under the Server name → Feature delegation.
If Handler Mappings is set to readonly and your site web.configs have a handlers section, flip the value to read/write and see what happens.
Worked for me when moving to Windows 8 / IIS 8 / ASP.Net MVC 4.
Click "Start button"
in the search box, enter "Turn windows features on or off"
in the features window, Click: "Internet Information Services"
Click: "World Wide Web Services"
Click: "Application Development Features"
Check (enable) the features. I checked all but not CGI.
i'm using w10 technical preview
I had same issue, this is because the app pool doesn't have rights to the web site directory or web.config. Try to grant rights for "IIS_IUSRS" with : Read,Execute,List.
I had the same issue when moving a web application from IIS 7 to 8, and I solved it by installing the URL Rewrite module, which I had completely forgot. So check that you have the correct modules etc. installed on your new server/IIS.
You can install this module with WPI (Web Platform Installer) also.
If you have a new machine / formatted your machine, while installing IIS, make sure that you ticked installing ASP.Net (appropriate version).
Hint : Turn Windows Feature ON/OFF --> IIS --> Application Development Features --> ASP.Net 3.5 / 4.6
Recently I have upgraded to Windows 10 (IIS 10) & as I had forgot to install ASP.Net, I was facing this issue.
Other troubleshooting tips are:
2) Make sure you have given read permission to IIS_IUSRS group on
your application folder.
3) You may check if your Application Pool
has correct target .Net framework selected.
4) Make sure your
Web.config is proper (well defined XML) and has no errors. Thanks.
Look in the web.config for invalid config sections.
In the IIS manager I couldn't open any of the features such as Module etc.
In my web.config I had an invalid config section from a chart object that I used before:
<system.webServer>
<httpHandlers>
<add path="ChartImg.axd" verb="GET,HEAD,POST" type="System.Web.UI.DataVisualization.Charting.ChartHttpHandler, System.Web.DataVisualization, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" validate="false" />
</httpHandlers>
</system.webServer>
After I removed it everything worked.
After trying all of the above, I was still stuck, so I decided to go look at the file referenced in my error message, "c:\some\path\web.config"
It was 3KB, and I renamed it to "_web.config", and the script immediately started working properly.
I assume the original created with how things were set before my myriad changes. With all the changes I did, it could now create a proper web.config.
Something to try if the above doesn't get you where you need to be, guys.
Finally sorted mine! Jesus.
I was using git hub for my project and downloading it to slightly different locations on each PC.
When I tried to unc to the config file the error mentioned I noticed it was actually the path the other pc uses. Couldn't fine this listed in the project at all so just right clicked the project file in VS and unloaded it, the loaded it again and it now works.
You probably tried this first but have you tried turning your pc off and on again? I tried all of the above first to no avail while simply doing this worked for me. Possibly one of my previous actions locked an important file in my project.

I've built sample Razor webpage that works perfectly fine and I decided to deploy it on local IIS enabled on Windows 8.1. (IIS 8.5).
I used the publish feature through the file system that copied relevant files to Inetpub subfolder.
When I try to access the webpage I get this error:
The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.
Error Code: 0x8007000d
Config Error:
Config File: (correct path)
The webconfig is suspiciously short but given simplicity of the page - perhaps long enough?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
<system.webServer>
<handlers>
<add name="aspNetCore" path="*" verb="*" modules="AspNetCoreModule" resourceType="Unspecified" />
</handlers>
<aspNetCore processPath="dotnet" arguments=".\myapp.dll" stdoutLogEnabled="false" stdoutLogFile=".\logs\stdout" />
</system.webServer>
</configuration>
I made pretty thorough search of similar issues here and other google-returned materials and overall nothing helped.
I'm pretty sure all relevant components that I could install for IIS I have installed already.
All configuration files are correctly formed.
The security is fine - I can play with webconfig content and get different error a bit which indicate IIS can access the config file.
The only thing that surprises me is that sometimes when I access various config icons on IIS for the page I get error like this:
i.e. for .NET Profile:
There was error while performing this operation.
Details: (nothing written here)
Filename: \?\C:\inetpub\wwwroot\mypagefolder\web.config
Error: (nothing written here)
Is my web.config missing some sections?
EDIT: I also dropped the published application on some other IIS server that is used for other applications and the result is the same which make me inclined to believe s.t. is either wrong with the application publish process or s.t. is very weird
Looking at your web.config, it is found that you are trying to deploying ASP.NET Core website. It requires
.NET Core Hosting Bundle installed on the hosting server
Application Pool .NET CLR version set to "No Managed Code"
Ensure that the Application Pool Identity user has read permissions on the published folder.
For details check:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/aspnet/core/host-and-deploy/iis/?view=aspnetcore-2.0
First thing I suggest is to check is the .NET CLR version of your application pool and also check the AppPool Identity has read permissions on the published folder
I had the same issue in Windows 2012 Server. Although I had the SDK 2.1 installed, it only worked when I installed Runtime & Hosting Bundle.
https://www.microsoft.com/net/download/dotnet-core/2.1
It's important to mention that, in order to see this option, I had to click on "Can't find the file you want? Find more in .NET Core 2.1 downloads.".
By default this page is not shown.
I am trying to deploy an ASP.NET 5 WebApp in a Windows Server 2012 R2 that has IIS 8.5 installed.
The source code that I have here is a new ASP.NET Web Application. If I build it and run it in Visual Studio 2015, then works fine.
Now... I want to use the publish wizard to deploy it in ISS 8.5 so what I do is...
Right click on the project name (WebApplication5)
I created a custom profile (I named as localhost)
I add the target location. C:\inetpub\wwwroot
I configure the Settings
Configuration: Release
Target DNX Version: dnx-clr-win-x64.1.0.0.rc1-update1
Then I publish the web app.
After that, I have the following folder structure in my C:\inetpub\wwwroot
C:\inetpub\wwwroot
- approot
- packages
- runtime
- src
- ... bunch of files
- logs
- wwwroot
- css
- images
- js
- lib
- some files including web.config
Now I edited the permissions of the C:\inetput\wwwroot to include IIS_IUSRS and IUSR (I gave them full access for now to discard permission issues)
Finally, I went to ISS manager to Default Web Site -> Right Click -> Manage Website -> Advanced Settings -> and under physical path I added C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wwwroot
I restarted the IIS Server and when I try to browser to the default site I got the following message...
HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error
The requested page cannot be accessed because the related
configuration data for the page is invalid.
Detailed Error Information:
Module IIS Web Core
Notification Unknown
Handler Not yet determined
Error Code 0x8007000d
Config Error
Config File \?\C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wwwroot\web.config
And finally... this is the content of the web.config file...
<configuration>
<system.webServer>
<handlers>
<add name="httpplatformhandler" path="*" verb="*" modules="httpPlatformHandler" resourceType="Unspecified" />
</handlers>
<httpPlatform processPath="..\approot\web.cmd" arguments="" stdoutLogEnabled="false" stdoutLogFile="..\logs\stdout.log" startupTimeLimit="3600"></httpPlatform>
</system.webServer>
</configuration>
What am I missing? That used to be super easy on previous versions of ASP.NET but I can't configure this properly now.
Any pointers?
Thanks!
Well once you have that...
First, make sure you have the HTTP Platform Handler installed in your IIS (x86 / x64).
Now you'll need to unlock the system.webServer/handlers section which can be found in IIS Manager on the server node under Configuration Editor. Search for the right section and unlock it from the right action pane.
Make sure that the App Pool is set to No Managed Code. DNX is being run as an external process. IIS doesn't need to know about what it's currently running.
As we are talking of external process... make sure that you can run dnx from an empty Command Prompt (as in: Not Developer Command Prompt provided by Visual Studio).
For the full tutorial, checkout the official documentation.
I am getting the below error when I try to run my website.
The website is hosted on Windows 2012 R2.
Config error: This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. Locking is either by default (overrideModeDefault="Deny"), or set explicitly by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="false".
Error Code : 0x80070021
Config Source:
60: <httpErrors errorMode="Detailed" />
61: <handlers>
62: <remove name="ExtensionlessUrlHandler-Integrated-4.0" />
Below is what all I have tried:
Installed .Net 3.5 using "Add features and roles" in IIS
In the applicationHost file I have made the below code changes:
Changed sections handlers', modules, anonymousAuthentication, basicAuthentication,etc overrideModeDefault from "Deny" to "Allow".
Have done "HTTP Activation" in .Net 3.5 as well as 4.5.
Below is my web config file handler code:
<handlers>
<remove name="ExtensionlessUrlHandler-Integrated-4.0"/>
<remove name="OPTIONSVerbHandler"/>
<remove name="TRACEVerbHandler"/>
<add name="ExtensionlessUrlHandler-Integrated-4.0" path="*." verb="*" type="System.Web.Handlers.TransferRequestHandler" preCondition="integratedMode,runtimeVersionv4.0"/>
</handlers>
Installed all the features in features windows in this path:
Internet Information Service --> World Wide Web Services --> Application development features --> All but CGI have been enabled.
In feature delegation ASP was Read Only earlier, I have changed it to Read/Write
Unlocked handlers using command prompt
But I am still unable to get rid of the error.
My local instance is working perfectly fine. Also, I have a development server on which this website is working, only in my production server I am getting this error.
Please help me to find out what might be causing this problem.
Follow the below steps to unlock the handlers at the parent level:
1) In the connections tree(in IIS), go to your server node and then to your website.
2) For the website, in the right window you will see configuration editor under Management.
3) Double click on the configuration editor.
4) In the window that opens, on top you will find a drop down for sections. Choose "system.webServer/handlers" from the drop down.
5) On the right side, there is another drop down. Choose "ApplicationHost.Config "
6) On the right most pane, you will find "Unlock Section" under "Section" heading. Click on that.
7) Once the handlers at the applicationHost is unlocked, your website should run fine.
Heres what worked for me, had a similar problem on my new laptop which had windows 10.
Search for "Turn windows features on or off"
Check "Internet Information Services"
Check "World Wide Web Services"
Check "Application Development Features"
Enable all items under this
try again, now it should work.
Most IIS sections are locked by default but you can "unlock" them by setting the attribute overrideModeDefault from "Deny" to "Allow" for the relevant section group by modifying the ApplicationHost.config file located in %windir%\system32\inetsrv\config in Administrator mode
I came across this thread and solve the issue by the below steps, My problem may be different. Hope this can help someone.
In Turn windows feature on and off navigate to server roles and select the least below mentioned items.
Cheers!
I had an applicationhost.config inside my project folder. It seems IISExpress uses this folder, even though it displays a different file in my c:\users folder
.vs\config\applicationhost.config
When I tried these steps I kept getting error:
Search for "Turn windows features on or off"
Check "Internet Information Services"
Check "World Wide Web Services"
Check "Application Development Features"
Enable all items under this
Then i looked at event viewer and saw this error:Unable to install counter strings because the SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ASP.NET_64\Performance key could not be opened or accessed. The first DWORD in the Data section contains the Win32 error code.
To fix the issue i manually created following entry in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\ASP.NET_64\Performance
and followed these steps:
Search for "Turn windows features on or off"
Check "Internet Information Services"
Check "World Wide Web Services"
Check "Application Development Features"
Enable all items under this
I think the better way is that you must remove you configuration from your web.config. Publish your code on the server and do what you want to remove directly from the IIS server interface.
Thanks to this method if you sucessfully do what you want, you just have to get the web.config and compare the differences. After that you just have to post the solution in this post :-P.
Below is what worked for me:
In IIS Click on root note "LAPTOP ____**".
From option being shown in middle tray, Click on Configuration editor at bottom.
In Top Drop Down select "system.webServer/handlers".
At right window in Section Unlock Section.
Click on your project properties, go to the web section, from the Servers section, change from IIS express to Local IIS, it will create a virtual directory for you
I am replicating web application deployment and found several issues related to HTTP Error 500.19. My machine is running Windows 7 while the working development is using Windows 8. We're developing our Web Application using Visual Studio 2010.
First, I got error code 0x80070021, similar as posted here.
I update my web.config according to the accepted answer and then I got following error code (which is similar as posted here).
HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error
Error Code 0x8007000d
Config Source -1: 0:
I have read the symptoms definition in Microsoft support page and cause of the error is:
This problem occurs because the ApplicationHost.config file or the Web.config file contains a malformed XML element.
and the solution is
Delete the malformed XML element from the ApplicationHost.config file or from the Web.config file.
However, the web.config that I used is working perfectly in the original development environment.
Here is what I have checked and tried so far:
Install ASP.NET by calling aspnet_regiis -i
Set my application to use different application pool (ASP.NET v4.0, .NET v4, etc)
ApplicationHost.config file is still using default from Windows 7.
This is part of my Web.Config

I have read similar/duplicates/closed posts (around 13) posts in stackoverflow, tried all except the answer related to Ajax (is it related) and still have no clue on what the error is.
Does anyone one how to fix this error? (And if possible, a comprehensive lists of things need to be checked so we can reduce similar posts like this.) I am ready to provide more details.
Error 0x8007000d means URL rewriting module (referenced in web.config) is missing or proper version is not installed.
Just install URL rewriting module via web platform installer.
I recommend to check all dependencies from web.config and install them.
When trying to set up a .NET Core 1.0 website I got this error, and tried everything else I could find with no luck, including checking the web.config file, IIS_IUSRS permissions, IIS URL rewrite module, etc. In the end, I installed DotNetCore.1.0.0-WindowsHosting.exe from this page: https://www.microsoft.com/net/download and it started working right away.
Specific link to download: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=817246
Yes, for .net core apps, install dotnet hosting. This worked for me.
And here it is for .net6
And now if you need .net7
Install URL rewriting:
UPDATE - this is now available here (and works with IIS 7-10):
https://www.iis.net/downloads/microsoft/url-rewrite
Ensure you have the following set to 'Allowed' for your IIS server:
In my case, because I had reinstalled iis, I needed to register iis with dot net 4 using this command:
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_regiis.exe -i
In my case (.Net Core Web API) for this issue HTTP Error 500.19 – Internal Server Error 0x8007000d
First download dotnet-hosting-3.0.0-preview5-19227-01-win (.Net Core 3) or dotnetcore 2 hasting windows
https://download.visualstudio.microsoft.com/download/pr/5bed16f2-fd1a-4027-bee3-3d6a1b5844cc/dd22ca2820fadb57fd5378e1763d27cd/dotnet-hosting-3.1.4-win.exe
Any .net core 3.1 application either angular or mvc application would need this.
Second install it as Administrator
Open cmd as administrator, type iisreset, press enter
So refresh your localhost app

A repair of the DotNetCore hosting bundle did the trick for me. :/
Installing ASP.NET Core Runtime Hosting Bundle solved the issue for me. Source: 500.19 Internal Server Error (0x8007000d)
Kind of late to the party here, but I have just been struggling with the exact same issue (symptoms) and cursing the lack of error detail reporting.
It worked fine on IIS 8+ machines but Win 7 got these INSTANT HTTP 500.19 errors.
For me it was as silly as having an unsupported configuration element in the config file:
<applicationInitialization doAppInitAfterRestart="true">
<add initializationPage="/" />
</applicationInitialization>
So while running old web.config files worked fine, I just diffed them and started chopping away at new blocks until I got the page to start loading. Had I seen this as an answer I would have gone this route immediately as I knew none of the popular solutions were relevant. So there you go :)
I turn on .Net Framework 3.5 and 4.5 Advance Service in Control Panel->Programs and Features->Turn Windows features on or off.it work for me.
Problem solved. Here are the steps that I tried:
Enable the 32-bit application in IIS -> Application pool -> Advanced settings
Copy System.EnterpriseServices.dll and System.EnterpriseServices.Wrapper.dll from C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 to the application bin folder
Do comments/uncomments to sections on the web.config and found that problem related to the referenced DLL.
The config that I commented the previous one that I added:
<section name="handlers" overrideModeDefault="Allow" />
<section name="modules" allowDefinition="MachineToApplication" overrideModeDefault="Allow"/>
Add the required FasterFlect.DLL used by Combres.DLL v2.1.0.0 to the application bin folder (shall download the full zip from Combres codeplex, because the required fasterflect DLL V2.0.3732.24338 cannot be found in fasterflect codeplex) and other DLLs. For convinience, use the full Combres.DLL (1,3MB)
Check that the DLL versions and public key tokens are configured correctly in web.config using tool, e.g. .NET Reflector
I understand that this error can occur because of many different reasons. In my case it was because I uninstalled WSUS service from Server Roles and the whole IIS went down. After doing a bit of research I found that uninstalling WSUS removes a few dlls which are used to do http compression. Since those dlls were missing and the IIS was still looking for them I did a reset using the following command in CMD:
appcmd set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /-[name='xpress']
Bingo! The problem is sorted now. Dont forget to run it as an administrator. You might also need to do "iisreset" as well. Just in case.
Hope it helps others.
Cheers
I had this problem with a brand new web service. Solved it by adding read-only access for Everyone on Properties->Security for the folder that the service was in.
I had the exact same error. It turned out that it was something was caused by something completely, though. It was missing write permissions in a cache folder. But IIS reported error 0x8007000d which is wildly confusing.
I have the same problem when I was trying to publish asp.net core 5.0 web app on my local IIS and the solution was to add the following inside System.webserver tag in my web.config file
<applicationInitialization doAppInitAfterRestart="true">
<add initializationPage="/" />
</applicationInitialization>
Reinstalling ASP.NET Core Runtime - Windows Hosting Bundle Installer made the trick for me... I belive the "ASP.NET Core Module" was missing.
For me I had a web.config file in one my root folders, this config file was for the live server so removing it allowed the site to run on the dev server.
So check for any web.config files in folders too.
In my case, i have installed dotnet hosting but error change to HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable, but after install windows update KB2999226 and dotnet sdk, its work!
follow the procedure chronologically or it might fail due to missing or errors in redirecting.
install Runtime bundle e.g.. dotnet-sdk-7.0....
2.turn asp services on and internet services"Turn Windows features on or off" to enable IIS
3.install web hosting bundle iis 7.0 e.g dotnet-hosting-7.0.2...
this worked for me
For me, it was all about setting up my web server to use the latest-and-greatest tech to support my ASP.NET 5 application!
The following URL gave me all the tips I needed:
https://docs.asp.net/en/1.0.0-rc1/publishing/iis-with-msdeploy.html
Hope this helps :)
I know this has been answered a few times but none of the solutions worked for me. I published my ASP.NET MVC 3 application (It was just the internet template without any changes to it) to see if I could get it to work publically. However, when I visit the site it shows up with a 403 error. Coming from a php/linux background, I'm confused and have no clue where to look. I've only been learning .NET for about 8-9 months and everything I've been testing on before was on the local development server through VS2010. It almost appears like the server doesnt know it should be an MVC application or I have to change my routing.
Anyway, I checked to make sure that the server setting is .NET 4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ALSO, It's a shared hosting environment using arvixe.
For me this did the trick (Original Answer by Mmerrell at Getting 404.0 error for ASP.NET MVC 3 app on IIS 7.0 / Windows Server 2008 )
You actually just reminded me that I needed to fix this issue in an
enviroment here. If your situation is the same as mine then it's a
simple fix.
Just add the following to your web config:
<system.webServer>
<modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" />
Make sure your have choosen the "ASP.Net 4.0" App-Pool and not the App-Pool created for your application.
Make sure your App Pool uses the "ApplicationPoolIdentity" and NOT NetworkService. Remove the NetworkService permission from your root folder. You dont need it. IIS has an built-in identity (IIS_IUSRS).
403 is a forbidden error. Try checking the NTFS permissions of the folder where you deployed, ensure the Network Service user has read permission
Additionally, check the Authentication and Authorization mechanism in the IIS application:
Edited:
.Net Authorization rules
I had this same issue after publishing an MVC 4 WebSite to a remote server using FTP Publishing. What ended up working for me was after publishing through Visual Studio, log onto IIS on the remote server, locate the published directory -> right click -> Convert to Application.
Not sure if there is a way to specify this in the web.config/properties, if you don't have access to the server?
1- verify that your application is running under .NET 4.0 (you did so)
2- check with the hosting company that it supports the MVC 3 framework on their hosting plan.
3- (works) Bin-Deploy your MVC run-time libraries so you may overcome any requirements on the server.
More bout bin-deploy your ASP.NET MVC can be found here: http://haacked.com/archive/2011/05/25/bin-deploying-asp-net-mvc-3.aspx
4- check that "Network Service" has proper access rights to your folder. it basically should have "Read" permission.
Don't forget about aspnet_regiis.exe -ir.
<handlers>
<add name="rewrite" path="*" verb="*" modules="IsapiModule" scriptProcessor="C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_isapi.dll" resourceType="Unspecified" requireAccess="None" preCondition="classicMode,runtimeVersionv4.0,bitness32" />
</handlers>
Ask your hosting provider to add this handlers into webconfig
Try changing the Managed Pipeline Mode of the Application Pool to 'Classic' instead of 'Integrated'.
Whilst it may not be the final result that you're after (there can be real advantages in using Integrated mode), at least it will point you in the right direction... if it works.
