Integrate Asana into Microsoft CRM platforms - crm

Asana looks like it is easy to use and extremely fast.
My company currently uses the slow and terrible Microsoft CRM, would it be possible to use Asana as the front end and send the inputted data to the MS CRM database?
I understand that a MS API is most likely needed as well, however does Asana have the capabilities?

The short answer is yes, it's possible to do this, both products have the capability to do what you describe. Asana's API is pretty new though, so you might have some initial limitations; but based on what I suspect you'd want to do, it should be adequate.
But unless you have an incredibly nimble and forward thinking IT group, I don't imagine they would want to build or support this. And if they were nimble and forward thinking, you probably wouldn't be using Microsoft CRM (or at least it wouldn't be slow).

Pre-requisites for learning CRM Dynamics

I am not sure if this is a valid question here but couldn't find an answer elsewhere. I am just about to starting training on Microsoft Dynamics CRM and with just over an year of experience with asp.net, a little bit of JavaScript, HTML and CSS, I am not sure if I am headed the right way.
Is this sufficient? What skills should I try to sharpen up before starting with Dynamics?
Dynamics CRM is probably the most flexible system I have ever worked on. You can extend it and make it do just about anything. So the first thing you will want to learn about is the different vectors or customization. You can customize CRM in several different ways and each has it merits and drawbacks:
Javascript [Client side only]. Note that CRM doesn't support customization by directly accessing the DOM, rather you work through XRM exposed interfaces. It allows practical GUI and data manipulation though through REST and FetchXML queries.
Workflows. These are rules you can program via the "point and click" interface. It allows you to monitor when certain actions happen and then react accordingly. These run server side so it is independent of the client. The system ships with lots of rules, but custom rules can be written to extend these almost infinitely.
Plugins. Similar to workflows but these fire immediately after subscribed to events. You can do things here like perform validation (which you can also do in Javascript, but plugins are server side) and manipulate data on or after saves.
For custom workflows and plugins, you will definitely need to be familiar with .NET (at least 4.0). You can use either C# or VB.NET, but the Visual Studio integration (which is really nice) is limited to C#. You can use VB.NET but it requires a lot of manual configuration so I wouldn't recommend it given the choice between the two. At the time of this writing, however, the Visual Studio integration is limited to VS 2010 and VS 2012 Professional.

General Structure for ASP.NET Enterprise(ish) App

I'm the custodian of a pretty sophisticated, yet antiquated, ASP.NET application. It is essentially a platform that makes creating database applications easier - with tools to read in database schemas, auto generate forms, reports, charts, and provide extremely extensive tools to manipulate those things within the UI. There are some pretty big clients using the platform for some niche applications, and despite the age of much of the code (some of it written as early as 2001), everything runs pretty well.
The company is doing well enough that i need to start considering a new version, and rather than plastering on some new features, i'd like to consider a fresh start. The current solution is a ridiculous 150 projects - down from about 220 when i first started working on this full time.
Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for the general structure of an enterprise(ish) level application? What new technologies should i consider? Maybe some particular books or websites i should review?
I've got a good handle on all of the specifics that make our platform so flexible - but because i've been locked into the general structure of our code for so long, i feel like i'm way out of touch with how the entire thing needs to be structured on a large scale. The current application still has a bunch of .NET Remoting for communication with the databases (just a tad out of date), and a ton of incredibly inefficient code written by someone who wasn't really a programmer.
WCF to serve info from the data access layer? WIF to authenticate? I'd really like to be able to assemble an API that my business partners can use to connect to the data and use a huge collection of common functions i've got set up - ideally that API could run in a web context or in some other environment.
I know this is a pretty big question that could have a lot of possible answers - just looking for some thoughts on where to really spend our research time.

If you want to rid yourself of all the authentication / authorization hassles, absolutely go for claims-based applications, WIF, ADFS etc.
That's the Microsoft direction - CMS, SP. Office 365. Windows Azure AD etc. are all now claims-based.
Only problem is that ADFS authenticates against AD. Have a look at Identity Server for something DB related.
Plus ADFS via ACS provides Facebook, Google etc. logons.

Embeddable Enterprise Collaboration (Microblogging) Engine

Short Version (tl;dr):
Is there an open source or commercial engine that provides embeddable collaboration and microblogging functionality?
Long Version:
I am creating a niche application that has need of this functionality and do not want to reinvent the wheel. The following are must have requirements:
Data API only. My application is SaaS, and I want to build the functionality around the data. This eliminates most of the offerings out there (facebook, salesforce chatter, yammer, present.ly, teambox)
Does not require use of a built-in front end. I really just want an engine that will take care of the storage and events, and gives me a means of querying. Requiring the use of a specific front end renders it useless for embedding into my app. This eliminates everything else I have found (status.net, Yonkly, Jaiku)
Beyond standard updates and replies, can handle custom events. For example, if I were embedding this into an logistics application, I could have the engine handle events like "shipped", "received", and "cancelled".
Beyond this, there are several nice to have features that a framework would have:
Should not require a specific platform or server technology to run (i.e. something like a RESTful API would be nice)
Should be message based so that commands that affect its state can come from any source
Should encapsulate its own storage so that external resources are not necessary (i.e. no database needed)
Should have pluggable extendable UI components/widgets for web, mobile, and desktop clients
Should have search and retrieval APIs available for many languages/platforms
It seems that someone out there should have this already, or at least be in progress with it. Please point me in the right direction.

How to sell a "Sharepoint Developer"?

I am working in a company with huge DotNet team. We currently have MOSS 2007 license which I assume is a costly one and just one administrator working/maintaining all Sharepoint stuff.
I felt that Sharepoint is not being utilized to its potential. Being interested in Sharepoint Development for past 1 year (I am a .NET Developer with 6 years of exp) I offered my help to our Director, his first question was
"Why do I need a Sharepoint Developer?"
Now I need help in selling a "Sharepoint Developer" to my director.
I would be glad to provide any more information you need about the company or current utilization.
EDIT: Just want to elaborate more on my company's scenario. We have sharepoint being used mostly for Internal use like Raising Service Tickets, Maintaining Networking Stuff ( Servers, Sites, clients details), Document Sharing with Clients.
If you want the official “value proposition” of SharePoint, it goes something like this; the product already has a lot of common application behaviours built into it (doc management, access control, search, etc) therefore it streamlines development by being able to build directly on top of these features rather than building them from scratch. It’s a .NET based environment so your current developers can leverage existing skills.
However, it’s not all that simple. There’s a very solid learning curve, you need to develop directly on a Windows Server and the lifecycle and deployment of apps if very different to ASP.NET. Ask him how much time your team spends coding/planning/worrying with:
Authentication
Security
Document Management
Versioning / Change History
Records Management (on a very light sense)
Backup / Restore support
Load balance
Multi domain support
Separated Content Databases
Content Collaboration and user-created structures
Theme support
Syndication
Outlook integration
??
And how much time you ACTUALLY worry/code/plan implementing your BUSINESS RULES
SharePoint is far from perfect, but in a .NET world it is a hell of a good start to get things done without reinventing the wheel.
Why do you think you need a sharepoint developer? What can more/better sharepoint development offer from a business perspective? Does it do thinks either faster, cheaper or better than you currently do them? You need to be able to verbalize this for management to buy-in.
Does the existing administrator have a technical background? Perhaps as a developer? If not, then yes, there is value in having a "Sharepoint Developer" handy as soon as you want to do anything even remotely outside the box in SharePoint.
Want to extend the functionality of your lists/libraries? You'll need to know how to create a CustomAction in .NET, or know how to combine JavaScript/JQuery with ASP.NET webservices to do so.
Want to create some custom rollups for reporting? Do you folks track tasks/project information in SharePoint? You'll need to understand ASP.NET server control fundamentals, and possibly XSL so that you can whip something together using SharePoint designer.
Maybe you want to standardize your content (calendars, tasks, etc.) through custom content types. You'll need a development background to understand how to provision this using SharePoint's solution/feature mechanisms.
Or perhaps your director would be interested in reporting? If you pick up a third-party reporting tool such as Dundas Charts, good luck making anything remotely complex without having a development background.
These are just some things off the top of my head..
Point out the business benefits that your company would IMMEDIATELY derive by doing / going Sharepoint. In your spare time at the office, create a proof of concept perhaps that you could parody with your director in able to get his/her nod.
As someone who once was a sharepoint developer, it is hard to add value to that product. It will mostly be cosmetic changes or something you find to be really cool, but at the end of the day SP already provides the functionality. Also if you do something amazing with it M$ will eat your lunch.
I worked on MS CMS (which preceded MOSS) and the people who stuck with MOSS are earning good money - but proving business benefits to the skeptical is very difficult.
To sell yourself to your director you need to demonstrate that MOSS will either save the company money or help generate extra cash. From your brief company description I would reckon that cost focus is the way forward.
So ask your boss what are the three biggest cost savings that your company wants to make in the next year (there is always a focus) and (if you think it is worth asking) the three areas where the company is looking to expand.
Then go away and work out how MOSS (or any enterprise level CMS for that matter) can support and possibly improve the chance of meeting these objectives. If you can do that and present the director with some focused, manageable projects then you may be on the way.

Which search technology to use with ASP.NET?

What's your preferred method of providing a search facility on a website? Currently I prefer to use Lucene.net over Indexing Service / SQL Server full-text search (as there's nothing to set up server-side), but what other ways are being used out there?
We used both Lucene.net, Indexing Service and SQL Server full-text. For a project with large and heavy DB search functionality SQL search has an upper hand in terms of performance/resource hit. Otherwise Lucene is much better in all aspects.
Take a look at Solr. It uses Lucene for text indexing, but it is a full blown http server so you can post documents over http and do search using urls. The best part is that it gives you faceted searching out of the box which will require a lot of work if you do it yourself.
you could use google, it's not going to be the fastest indexer but it does provide great results when you have no budget.
dtSearch is one we've often used, but I'm not really that big a fan of it.
A lot of people are using Google's custom search these days; even a couple of banks that I know of use it for their intranet.
If you need to index all the pages of your site (not just the ones Google indexes) or if you want to create a search for your intranet web sites, the Google Mini is pretty sweet. It will cost you some money, but it is really easy to have it up and running within just a couple of hours. Depending on how many pages you need to index it can be expensive though.
I'm using dtSearch and I (kind of) like it. The API isn't the greatest in the world for .NET but it can get the job done and it's pretty fast. And it's cheap, so your boss will like it (~$1,000 US).
The results leave something to be desired as it doesn't do any kind of semantic relevance rankings or anything fancy. It does a better job than anything you can get out of MS SQL server though.
It has a web spider that makes it easy to do quick search apps on a website. If you need to you can use the API to create hooks into your database and to provide item level security - but you have to do the work yourself. Their forum leaves something to be desired as well but maybe people will start posting dtSearch stuff here. :)

I haven't tried it yet, but it could potentially be powerful.
From the site it looks primarily geared towards sharepoint users but given its sdk I don't see why you couldn't use it for a regular old site search
I also recommend SOLR. It's easy to set up, maintain, and configure. I've found it to be stable and easy to scale. There's a c# package for interfacing with solr.
