Hi I am reading Building wordpress themes from scratch in order to understand theme development.I got to a point in the book where it explains how to create the custom post type pages.And the author mentions that this function is required in order to display the page:

I have deleted the function and the page still display corectly without it.That leads me to belive that I do not understand wha this actualy does.
So is this function required to properly display custom post type pages?If so what does it do?
It adds rewrite rule for the permalinks structure of your page. If you remove it, the page still show correctly, but link towards your page is different!

I'm currently working on a custom post type and want to be able to edit the archive page from Wordpress with a page template. So I created the CPT called 'cars' and created a page template with template name: 'Cars overview'. Next i create a page inside WordPress and choose the template page 'Cars overview' and gave it the URL: mywebsite.com/cars/
Now the problem is that the slug 'mywebsite.com/cars/' is already in use by the custom post type itself causing the page to load the custom post type loop instead of the page template loop. So I can't edit the title, content etc inside WordPress. I could change the url of the page, but i want to be able to control the overview page in WordPress.
Long story short: How can I create a page template that is using the same URL as the custom post type archive page?

One simple solution, simply disable the archive where you create your custom post type:
register_post_type("cars", array("has_archive" => false));
Another approach rather then disabling the archiving and adding another page to show the cars. Changing the archive template used by your theme might be a better option.
First step is to find the template currently in use by your theme, copy it to your plugin file and you can change the template file to whatever you like. You can find more information about it here.
The only thing you need to do is point WordPress to the right direction:

Disabling the archive and creating one manually seems a bit strange to me. And I always replace the archive page and sometimes single page from our theme (usually the7).
In my plugin i have created a custom template that prints a requested sidebar. and for running the code of this template i assigned a custom page to it (by calling update_metadata) .
Is it a good idea for getting content of a specific sidebar into Ajax call ?
Now my problem is that WORDPRESS shows it in the dashboard and front page , and after searching i have not found any easy to understand solution for Hiding a page completely so only can be accessed by its id .
Can any one tell me how to do that ?
you are going about this the wrong way. You can create a function that can create anything that can be created on a wordpress page.
But if you really must you can create a page outside of the database, etc:

This will not be a page that will be in the admin section or in any query that relates to pages but someone could of course navigate to this page. But as i said above you would be better to create a function to create your sidebar. If you want a seperate file to handle the "view" you use require_once 'filename'; a file and keep your functions area free of html.
If you are creating functions in a wordpress plugin dont forget many functions may not be available until later in the load process. Use add_action() if you run into any undefined functions

you are loading wordpress before you get to the template so you have all the functions. (google wp load for more info) + get_header() / get_footer() will also load a few things like css, etc. I had a small typo in the code above, fixed that but basically what you are doing is telling wordpress if someone lands on www.example.com/sidebar to apply a query_var (rewrite rule). Wordpress will look up its saved vars (final function) and return the template assoc. The 2nd function just registers the var.
You also have wp_functions in any file you create and include in a plugin, etc hence why you can create a file that does exactly the same as this page.
Here's my issue. My company needs a vendor database added to our wordpress website. None of the existing plugins will even come close to what we need, and we already have a mysql database with all of our information, so we need to create a plugin or something to do what we need.
These urls need to be direct-accessible and have SEF urls. So, for example:
mysite.com/vendors/
mysite.com/vendors/pipe-manufacturers/
mysite.com/vendor/bobs-pipes/
And, the custom content needs to appear inside the wordpress template.
There are really 2 options:
1) Find a way to write our application outside of wordpress, but find a way to bootstrap wordpress to show the header, footer, and sidebar.
2) Run the app from inside wordpress.
So I went for option #2. I created a new template file named "vendor.php", and began working. I added this code to my functions.php of my theme:

So what the above code does, if it sees the word "vendors" as the first part of the url after the site name, it sends you to vendor.php. This works PERFECTLY....
except...
Wordpress believes that the page is not found. It returns a 404 header, and NOT FOUND into the page title and breadcrumb.
Adding a PAGE called "Vendor Database" with the permalink "/vendors/" fixes the main page. But there will be literally hundreds of vendors and different categories. I cant be creating a custom page for each one. This needs to be dynamic.
So, how do I make wordpress give a 200, and supply an acceptable page title, breadcrumb, etc.
Don't even get me started on the danged wp_title filter. This did NOT work as documented. Although, it just occurred to me that this might be an issue with Wordpress SEO (the wp_title filter issue).
Anyone got an idea on this?
Ok got this. The solution was to use the rewrite api, as mentioned above, to look for the pattern /vendors/, letting it know that it was a valid URL. Coupled with my existing template override, this is what I needed.
in WP admin how to add the custom field template plugin to a theme page?
it automatically shows in posts and pages but i want this in the theme page. the theme am using is from iwak "creations" portfolio page.
what files do i need to modify to add this?
It's very hard to say what you need to modify without being able to look at the code. Being a premium theme, we can't just download it and take a look.
Having said that, the theme may use the WordPress custom post type functionality. Search the code for a call to the register_post_type function. If it's used, you may be in luck. Either
add 'custom-fields' to the supports argument in that call, or
call add_post_type_support after the post type is registered. The $post_type parameter will be the first value passed to the register_post_type function, and the $supports parameter will be 'custom-fields'.
Daniel, are you using this Custom Post Type Plugin - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-field-template/screenshots/? I've used it before, and the guy who created it is Japanese, so his personal page isn't very useful as far as support for english goes.
I had some trouble with this at first. But what I think you're trying to do is add the custom fields to your new pages you've created, correct?
It's not very straightforward, but once it works it's pretty awesome.
Basically, when you set up the plugin you create these different "Custom fields," right? Well part of that should look like this:

type = textarea
rows = 4
cols = 40
tinyMCE = true
htmlEditor = true
Ok, so once you've created those "Custom fields" keep note of the part in brackets. You'll add this to your template pages:
<?php getCustomField('Custom Field Name'); ?>
Now when you enter the info in the pages or posts, the content should appear as you've entered it.
I created a very basic custom post type in my WP site to hold events. Basically, a user can input an event title, some information about the event and the date.
Currently, the only time the events are being displayed are in my sidebar where I just pull the title and date of the upcoming events.
However, I want to be able to allow the user to also click on the title of the link to lead to the event's individual page. I tried previewing my custom post type event and it kept leading me to my 404.php page. The events don't seem to load into a page at all.
I'm hoping this is a small property that I didn't set when I registered my post type. Any help?
Wordpress has incorporated custom post types into the template hierarchy and you have access to them at single-$posttype.php and archive-$posttype.php.
If you create these templates and your posts don't show up in the loop, you need to reset your permalinks/flush your rewrite rules.
As well, it would help to see how you are registering your post types, as in order for your archive-$posttype.php to be available you need to call has_archive => true in your arguments.
What i've done when i needed it:
Add this code in the same function that create your post type:
