Classic ASP 'Requests Executing' never greater than 1 - asp.net

We have a complex app that serves AJAX JSON streams (using ADO to grab the data) using brief ASP servlets. Any given session can fire up from 10-20 of these requests simultaneously. We encountered a significant performance problem way earlier than we expected as load built. (Server is a dual-XEON, RAID 5, 4gb, etc). Sleuthing around in perfmon we noticed that the 'Requests Executing' figure is perpetually stuck at 1. Never gets any higher. Research indicates that numbers of 20-50 are not uncommon. Requests Queued will hover around 10-20 and Wait Time climbs as well.
We have fiddled with ASPProcessorThreadMax set to 40 from default of 25 with no effect. It seems to be only able to work a single request at a time, which, needless to say, won't work. I can't find anything that describes this particular problem. Anny help is greatly appreciated.

ASP Session object is constrained to a Single Threaded Apartment (STA). As a result requests to ASP scripts for the same session can only be processed sequentially.
An additional reason why you might only ever see 1 executing ASP script even across multiple sessions is where debugging has be enabled for ASP. This causes the ASP processing to ignore ASPProcessorThreadMax and pretend it were set to 1.
To eliminate the problem ensure debugging is not enabled and turn off "Enable Session State". If you are using the Session object in your code you will need to find an alternative, like DB backed state.
However, how many active concurrent sessions are you expecting in the live production? Perhaps the overall user experience will not truely be impacted by the serialisation of requests per session.

ASP.NET Active Sessions Grow Indefinitely

Using PerfMon, I can see that my ASP.NET Applications (Total)\Sessions Active is growing indefinitely to the tens of thousands, and I suspect this is causing a recent performance degradation we are observing.
The growth appears to be around a few dozen per minute.
We are using .Net 4.5 and IIS 7.5
How can I get a sample of some details regarding these sessions using administrative tools? What could cause this? What next steps can I take to diagnose this odd behavior?
Place a hook on the Session_OnStart event (more on those events at MSDN: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178583.aspx).
From there you should examine and escalate depending on the situation.
First, simply place a breakpoint inside of the event handler and do some normal browsing in your development environment. You can use incognito windows in chrome to achieve anonymity for the sake of creating sessions. If you need to do this in production then you should set up some sort of logging database or leverage your existing logging database to record the session requests (you can serialize them temporarily if you need all of the data).
Look at what the request path is for these sessions, and at some of the contextual data in general. If there are erroneous sessions the handler should be called multiple times per request and that should be immediately obvious. From there you can determine how to handle the extra paths or requests that are coming in.
Since you tagged this asp.net, it is hard to tell what exact version or framework associated with that you are using. However, in general I have noticed that many browsers will accidentally cause an extra session for requesting resources, especially the favicon.
It is highly recommended that you do not create sessions for favicons. In asp.net mvc you can do that by ignoring the route. In asp.net mvc you can also ignore excessive resources. That is done in the global.asax.cs file like this

See if you have a place in your application that you can do this if the extra sessions are being created as a result of these types of requests.

ASP Website runs slow when number of users Increases

I need some information from you.I have used session.TimeOut=540 in application.Is that effects on my Application performance after some time.When number of users increases its getting very slow. response time nearly more that 2 minutes for a button click also.This is hosted in server in Application pool .I don't know about Application pool much.If Session Timeout is the problem i will remove it.Please suggest me the way to for more users.

I think that you have some page(s) that make some work that takes time, or for some reason or a bug is keep open for more time than the usual.
This page is keep lock the session and hold the rest page from response because the session holds all the pages.
Now, together with the increase of the timeout this page is lock everything and here is you response time near to 2 minutes.
The solution is to locate the page that have the long running problem and fix it or make it faster by optimize the process, or if this page must keep the long time running, then disable the session for that one.

Now from the other hand, if your server suffer from hardware, or bad setup then here is one other answer with points that you need to check to make it faster.
Find out where the time is spent
add the StopWatch in the method which you said "more that 2 minutes for a button click". you can find which statment spent the most time.
If it is a query on DB that cost time. Check your sql statement.
are you using "SELECT Count(*)" instead of "SELECT Count(Id)"? the * is always slower. also, don't try "SELECT * FROM...."
Use cache.
there are many ways to do cache. both in ASPX pages and your biz layer.
the OutputCache is the most easy way.
and also, cache the page (for example a blog post) on the first time when a user visit it.
Did you use memory paging?
be careful when doing paging on gridview or other list. If you just call DataSource=xxx and DataBind(), even with PagedDataSource, this is likely a memory paging. It cost a lot of performance. Please use stored procedures to do paging.
Check your server environment
where did you deploy the website? many ISP will limit brandwide and IIS connection count and also CPU time to your account.
if you have RD access to your server. you can watch CPU and memory usage to see if they are high when many user comes to your site. If the site is slow and neither CPU nor memory useage is high, it may be a network brandwide problem.
Here are some simple steps to narrow down the issue -
1) Get HTTPWatch (theres a free Basic version) available and check whats really taking time from an end user perspective. Look at number of requests, number of resources downloaded, and the payload. If there is nothing to worry move on to next
2) If its not client, then its usually the processing time on the server. Jump on to DB first - since this is quite easier to eliminate quickly. Look at how many DB calls are made (run profiler in staging or dev) and see if there are any long running queries, missing indexes or statistics, and note the IO. If all is well, move on
3) Check your app code. You could get on with VS.NET in build profiler or professional tools such as Ants. If code is fine then its your network or external calls that you make, check your network bandwidth. If you still cannot narrow down, check your environment/hardware
The best way to get to it is to apply load - You could use simple tools such as ab.exe (that comes as part of Apache Web server) to have concurrent hits on your server and run the App, DB profilers in the background to get to the issue.

Why is the AspNetSessionData stage of page processing delaying my page by 20+ seconds?

I have a web application that uses ASP.NET with "InProc" session handling. Normally, everything works fine, but a few hundred requests each day take significantly longer to run than normal. In the IIS logs, I can see that these pages (which usually require 2-5 seconds to run) are running for 20+ seconds.
I enabled Failed Request Tracing in Verbose mode, and found that the delay is happening in the AspNetSessionData section. In the example shown below, there was a 39-second gap between AspNetSessionDataBegin and AspNetSessionDataEnd.
I'm not sure what to do next. I can't find any reason for this delay, and I can't find any more logging features that could be enabled to tell me what's happening here. Does anyone know why this is happening, or have any suggestions for additional steps I can take to find the problem?
My app usually stores 1-5MB in session for each user, mostly cached data for searches. The server has plenty of available memory, and only runs about 50 users.
It could be caused by lock contention for the session state. Take a look at the last paragraph of MSDN's ASP.NET Session State Overview. See also K. Scott Allen's helpful post on this subject.
If a page is annotated with EnableSessionState="True" (or inherits the web.config default), then all requests for that page will acquire a write lock on the session state. All other requests that use session state -- even if they do not acquire a write lock -- are blocked until that request finishes.
If a page is annotated with EnableSessionState="ReadOnly", then the page will not acquire a write lock and so will not block other requests. (Though it may be blocked by another request holding the write lock.)
To eliminate this lock contention, you may want to implement your own [finer grained] locking around the HttpContext.Cache object or static WeakReferences. The latter is probably more efficient. (See pp. 118-122 of Ultra-Fast ASP.NET by Richard Kiessig.)
There is chance your are running up against the maximum amount of memory that Application Pool is allowed to consume, which causes a restart of the Application Pool (which would account for the delay you are seeing in accessing the session). The amount of memory on the server doesn't impact the amount of memory ASP.NET can use, this is controlled in the machine.config in the memoryLimit property and in IIS 6.0 later in IIS itself using the "Maximum memory used" property. Beyond that, have you considered alternatives to each user using 5 MB of session memory? This will not scale well at all and can cause a lot of issues while under load. Might caching be a more effective solution? Do the searches take so long that you need to do this, could the SQL/Database Setup be optimized to speed up your queries?

Considerations for ASP.NET application with long running synchronous requests

Under windows server 2008 64bit, IIS 7.0 and .NET 4.0 if an ASP.NET application (using ASP.NET thread pool, synchronous request processing) is long running (> 30 minutes). Web application has no page and main purpose is reading huge files ( > 1 GB) in chunks (~5 MB) and transfer them to the clients. Code:

Single producer - single consumer pattern implemented so for each request there are two threads. I don't use task library here but please let me know if it has advantage over traditional thread creation in this scenario. HTTP Handler (.ashx) is used instead of a (.aspx) page. Under stress test CPU utilization is not a problem but with a single worker process, after 210 concurrent clients, new connections encounter time-out. This is solved by web gardening since I don't use session state. I'm not sure if there's any big issue I've missed but please let me know what other considerations should be taken in your opinion ?
for example maybe IIS closes long running TCP connections due to a "connection timeout" since normal ASP.NET pages are processed in less than 5 minutes, so I should increase the value.

Personally, I would be looking at a different mechanism for this type of processing. HTTP Requests/Web Applications are NOT designed for this type of thing, and stability is going to be VERY hard, you have a number of risks that could cause you major issues as you are working with this type of model.
I would move that processing off to a backend process, so that you are OUTSIDE of the asp.net runtime, that way you have more control over start/shutdown, etc.
First, Never. NEVER. NEVER! do any processing that takes more than a few seconds in a thread pool thread. There are a limited number of them, and they're used by the system for many things. This is asking for trouble.
Second, while the handler is a good idea, you're a little vague on what you mean by "generate on the fly" Do you mean you are encrypting a file on the fly and this encryption can take 30 minutes? Or do you mean you're pulling data from a database and assembling a file? Or that the download takes 30 minutes to download?

As I said, don't use a thread pool for anything long running. Create your own thread, or if you're using .NET 4 use a Task and specify it as long running.
Long running processes should not be implemented this way. Pass this off to a service that you set up.
IF you do want to have a page hang for a client, consider interfacing from AJAX to something that does not block on IO threads - like node.js.
Push notifications to many clients is not something ASP.NET can handle due to thread usage, hence my node.js. If your load is low, you have other options.

It's hard to advise more without performance analysis. You the VS built-in and find the bottlenecks.
The Web 1.0 way of dealing with long running processes is to spawn them off on the server and return immediately. Have the spawned off service update a database with progress and pages on the site can query for progress.
The most common usage of this technique is getting a package delivery. You can't hold the HTTP connection open until my package shows up, so it just gives you a way to query for progress. The background process deals with orchestrating all of the steps it takes for getting the item, wrapping it up, getting it onto a UPS truck, etc. All along the way, each step is recorded in the database. Conceptually, it's the same.
Edit based on Question Edit: Just return a result page immediately, and generate the binary on the server in a spawned thread or process. Use Ajax to check to see if the file is ready and when it is, provide a link to it.

How useful is Response.IsClientConnected?

I was wondering if anyone had experience they could share using the Response.IsClientConnected property as a performance optimization for asp.net websites.
The reason I ask is that I am a bit skeptical on how effective it would be in real life scenarios. I understand the concept of checking the value before performing a large task but I just can't see how useful this would be as clients could disconnect at any point time.
I think the main usage would be for optimizing the delivery of long processes. For example, if you had to generate a huge report or something, you might run the report in a separate thread and then periodically check to see if the user is still connnected. If not, you could kill this long running process so that it is not running needlessly since the user is no longer expecting a response.
This helps to prevent users from starting long processes and then making more requests over and over because they might think it is slow or something. If you were not doing this type of checking, you could tax your server due to all the requests even though all but one is valid. This scenario could be handled by allowing only one user to run one long running task, but it would also help in a multi-user environment as well to make sure you are only spending time serving up requests where the user is still connected and waiting for the response.
Note: I have never actually used this before, this is just based on my very basic understanding of what I have read.
I have used this extensively in my applications and it can give you a huge saving on resources.
Try this: create a page that needs -some- time to complete and try refresh it many many times before it complete. You will see that requests are queued to be executed. Imagine a user that has a slow connection and refreshes his page many many times thinking this will fetch the page (a very common issue from what a site can die out of resources when all users are connected and for some reason it becomes slow).
Now, change it and at the start of each page load, (or sooner at page init) check if HttpContext.Current.Response.IsClientConnected and in the case that he is not connetced throw a threadabord exception. You will see, your site will respond much sooner.
Actually I check if client is connected before any heavy action on the page so as to prevent needless executions. In production environments, I have seen that especially in cases where the system becomes slow, this validation will help much.
