What's a good way to create a no-conflict version of a CSS stylesheet? Let's say you have a bunch of code with classes that overlap with Bootstrap's classes.
Is this valid: adding a class="bootstrap" to the ancestor element under which bootstrap styles should be applied, and then changing bootstrap.css to prefix every rule {} with .bootstrap rule {}?

I've also needed to do this recently with the bootstrap form styles to avoid clashes, and I've found that you can surround all the #imports in the bootstrap.less (or your own custom version) with: .bootstrap { ... } and rebuild bootstrap. Now every CSS selector will be prefixed with .bootstrap.

I don't see any reason that would not work, but there are probably some performance implications to doing that - I'm not sure if they would even be significant enough to consider. It would probably be a better idea to rename the conflicting classes.

Yes. That is an ugly approach and you will get into DOM Bashing (slower performance). Is there any reason why you couldn't just refactor your code and seperate the bootstrap styles entirely?

Avoid conflicts of multiple CSS frameworks and style classes

I am currently implementing a plugin that gets dynamically incrusted into a DIV (not an iframe) and am currently using Bulma as my CSS framework. The issue I am having is that since this plugin is going to be integrated into many sites, it will also inherit the styles applied to the parent website.
Due to many of the classes being a standard name in many frameworks, such as column, button, form, and others, this is creating a conflict.
I have been reviewing a couple of packages that either add a prefix to these classes as well as use a namespace.
Namespace:
The namespace route does not work since this does avoid our plugin from not interfering with any of the other sites' styles, the site's styles still affect ours.

The other route I was researching ways to add a prefix to all the classes from our plugin, such as -column, but I understand that this will output a CSS library with all the classes with the prefix but not my HTML files which have the class="column".
I am hoping to find a solution for this, as I would think this is, although not common, a recurring issue/question and I just haven't found the proper solution for this.
Any advice would be appreciated.
You can use the #layer css rule:
The #layer at-rule allows authors to explicitly layer their styles in the cascade, before specificity and order of appearance are considered.
Example:
/* styles.css */
#layer bootstrapFramework, myPluginStyles;
#import url("https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.4.1/css/bootstrap.min.css")
layer(bootstrapFramework);
#import url("https://yourPluginStyles.css")
layer(myPluginStyles);
Doing this will override bootstrap classes with your plugin CSS classes. Due to the order of the layers.

Yeah. That's fine. Just add a prefix to the HTML classes too. It should work.
Or you can choose to ditch CSS frameworks for the plugin and write the CSS for the necessary components. You just do a little reset for your component's HTML elements and you can expect a fairly consistent design across multiple different implementations.
I feel this may be just helpful too. custom HTML elements too.

Is there anyway I can prefix over 1000 lines of CSS at once?

I have some h1, h2, h3 and a lot of bootstrap snippets that I want to apply only to a specific part of my site, I added a unique class, say .unique but it would take hours to prefix over 1000 of CSS lines

You could use a CSS-preprocessor like LESS or SASS (there are more). Both can do what you want, by just doing this:
.unique {
// Old CSS goes here
}
The have many other advantages over normal CSS.
common I would like to give you some ideas, cause i think your question has something to do with control css overriding.
the Jost's LESS or SASS solution is very good actually to prefix cause can use nested css features, but it requires a compile process, their eventually compiled files are still css. cause the .less or .sass files can not be recognized for html to render styling.
Another thinking To avoid css conflicts and wrong overriding,
Instead of including global styling, see if you can embed them in part of the specific section/page where they can get higher priorities than the rest global styles.
even the same css, generally, !important > inline css > internal css > external css
or javascript can trigger css override after previous css finished rendering on the page.
Instead of using css priorities or script running priorities to override styles, making two external mobile.css, destop.css for example, then using javascript to reload page to include different stylesheet when device width are detected to have been changed in browser resizing behavior.(This is one pop way used in responsive view)
using IDE to locate css patterns and replace them with your prefix if it's simple to match all the patterns.

bootstrap css how to resolve conflict

I saved and am using the bootstrap css but it conflicts with my main css.
it has tags body, html, a, img, p... and my css loses configuration

Try importing your custom CSS after Bootstrap CSS.
In CSS, the “!important” suffix was originally intended to provide a method of overriding author stylesheets. Users could define their own “user stylesheets” and could use this suffix to give their rules precedence over the author’s (website creator’s) styles.
Unfortunately, and quite predictably, its usage has spread massively, but not in the right direction. Nowadays, it’s used to counteract the pain of having to deal with CSS specificity, otherwise known as the set of rules which dictate that “div h1 a” is more specific selector than “div a”. Most people that use CSS on a daily basis don’t know enough about CSS specificity to solve their problems without using the “!important” suffix.
1.over ride those styles in your css file by using !important property. bootsrtap css either override or extend your css with bootstrap css so if you want to override entire css of some class best to use !important property.
2.if your are using script in your code so its very easy to differentiate the css styles.
Try combining into one CSS, multiple CSS slows down the sites.
Even, Bootstrap has its own body,html, etc tags. You have to edit them or delete/comment them. So it avoids conflicts.
Generally, the last CSS property will be applied, so if you put your body, html etc at the end of Bootstrap.css, that might work, but not recommended.

CSS Specificity Filter

This is a long shot, but is there a tool available that optimizes CSS selectors by removing unneeded specificity?
I find that when I write CSS, I deliberately make my selectors more specific than necessary to avoid conflicts and for quasi-documentation.
It would be great if there were a tool that could analyze a given group of rules, determine their "uniqueness" in terms of overlap with other rules, and then strip away any unnecessary specificity.
I can't even begin to imagine how a tool developer would approach all of the scenarios this would require, but I've been blown away by others' ingenuities in this area before and figured it was worth asking.

I've added a bounty to this question, and the more I think about it, the more I realize how valuable a CSS Specificity Filter would be.
For example, when working with Nested Rules/Selectors in Sass and LESS, excessive nesting is a common and well-known antipattern that can easily lead to overly specific selectors.
There's a good illustration of this in the excellent TutsPlus course Maintainable CSS with Sass and Compass:

Sass will follow these nesting instructions and produce the following CSS output, raising no objection to any unneeded specificity:

If a Specificity Filter did/does exist, however, it would create potential benefits for CSS developers:
You could organize your stylesheets as a 1:1 mapping of the DOM, similar to what you see when you examine style rules in Firebug and Chrome Dev Tools. A smart editor/IDE could auto-populate styles for DOM elements with shared styles/classes. That redundancy would then, of course, be filtered out by the Specificity Filter/Optimizer.
Stylesheets could have their structure pre-populated by a tool that scans the DOM and translates it to CSS selectors/rules. This means a developer would only need to update the HTML; the CSS "tree" would be kept in sync to reflect the current state of the DOM. A smart editor would let you jump to the CSS definition for an element/class for styling -- or even make its style rules visible in a separate panel.
In a way, this almost seems like a step backward - like a feature you'd find in Dreamweaver or WebAssist to help newbs learn CSS. But the basic idea of a CSS selector optimization tool seems like a no brainer, and the type of workflow automation I've described would be the logical next step -- and the catalyst would be the Specificity Filter.
I looked into some of the better-known CSS editors and web IDEs, but haven't found anything offering this type of functionality beyond targeting a single element and generating a selector for it.

Both agree that micro-optimizing CSS isn't worth the effort, but that over-qualified descendant selectors are "an efficiency disaster." I haven't benchmarked yet myself, but suspect that the kind of "DOM Mapping" approach I'm suggesting would cause a performance hit without an optimization step, either manual or automated.

You could attempt to take a different approach, try to write your selectors as small (low specificity) as possible. and only make them more specific when needed.
With that way of working you don't need a tool.
Just going to throw this out there-- it doesn't 'answer' your question,but it's a tool I like to spread the word about for people who do a lot of css programming: Firebug.
If you're not familiar with it, it's a tool for web browsers. You pull up your page once it's installed, right click and select 'Inspect Element.' It will show you all css affecting different elements on your page, and is useful for creating clean, precise css code. Also it makes it easier to see instant updates on what your page would look like with slight modifications. It will inform you of useless css code that's being overridden by other css code.
ALSO! Firebug now is available for almost all browsers. Not just Firefox. Personally, I'm partial to using it in Chrome.
We really can't do without specificity because it is the only thing that saves you when you have two or more rules colliding. Specificity brings sanity to the whole jumbled CSS rule, so it is more of a blessing than curse. Some of the stuff you talked about, like the CSS selector, can be done using Firefox/Firebug. I'm more disturbed by browser compatibility.
Actually there's a way you can do this using HTML5 and CSS3. The standard technique is to specify elements using the HTML 5 attribute "data-" and then do CSS selection for this attribute. This isn't the purpose of the attributes, but you can customly specify some elements that you can use to even switch the theme of a site.
So, for example, you can end up creating your specificity filters manually in CSS, by specifying
<b data-specificity=2>test</b>
where data-specificity only matches to parents above.
UPDATE:
Alright, so for example, let's say you have a paragraph class, but you want to specify which parent, or how many parents the paragraph can inherit properties from. You would use rules for each potential parent that can be inherited from:
p[data-specificity="1"]{
color:red;
font-family:verdana;
text-decoration:underline;
}
p[data-specificity="2"]{
color:black;
font-family:arial;
}
div.container > *[data-specificity="2"] {
font-family:impact;
color:blue;
text-decoration:underline;
}
So these rules mean that any p tag which is a direct child of the div container and has specificity 2, is allowed to inherit properties from the div container. The blue color of the div gets inherited by the p with data-specificity 2.

The idea is that like this, using HTML5, you can control exactly which elements are allowed to inherit which properties. It's a lot of extra code to write (for both child and parent elements) but you can use this to get rid of some unnecessary specificity
I've never actually seen anyone use this method in practice, I pretty much just cooked it up for you, but I think it could be very useful, what do you think ?

CSS Files and Unwanted Overriding

I have a simple HTML page that is referencing 3 CSS files. The first is a style sheet that is just for the page. The other two are for the styles of two unique modals. These modal CSS files were not created by me and they are happily being used separately on other pages throughout the site.
My problem is that both of these modal CSS files contain a few common selectors and so they are messing up each other's styles.
I understand that the best way to fix this problem is to take one or both of the files and make their selectors unique. One way would be to namespace the selectors.
My questions is, however, now that I'm knee-deep in this page, is there anyway to prevent these CSS conflicts without changing the modal CSS pages as they currently stand? Are there any tools that can help such as LESS? What is the best practice for preventing this in the future?
The best solution indeed would be to refactor those css-files to your need.
However, an easier solution would be to include your stylesheet after those two third-party css-files and re-declare the styles for the common selectors, which automatically overrides the previous settings.
LESS/SASS are excellent tools to help you write CSS faster and more comfortable. I use SASS for private work and really recommend it. They can't help you though with issues like you have atm.
EDIT:
Using !important is possible, but considered bad habit, as it was intended to give the user the possibility to override author-styles with his own. Instead of using !important what you should do is:
Avoid duplicate styles as much as you can.
if you can't avoid this, try to resolve this by either:
cascading (=using the proper sequence to override previous styles)
using selector specificity (W3C-Spec).
Assuming:

Due to the cascading nature of CSS (sorry, I had to) using the same selector over and over overrides any previous styles. Thus, if modal_1.css and modal_2.css both apply style x to the body tag, for example, the second stylesheet will override the first.
The sad part is that there is no way out other than to, as you suggested, modify the two selectors to make them more specific.
Looking to the future, the best way to avoid overriding previously declared styles, is to always be specific about the particular element you are targeting, and it's proper place in the DOM. Note that LESS is simply a CSS preprocessor, which only allows you a different syntax for CSS.
I would suggest to a common class add into body tag of that particular page & target using that particular class. If you tools like LESS or Compass you can easily achieve the aim.
