I've been working on a website for a little while now, doing most of my testing in Chrome, Firefox, and IE. As I'm wrapping things up, I've tried viewing it in Safari (on Mac, iPad, and iPhone). I've noticed that certain elements are misplaced in Safari. I've tried playing with the CSS, but I've had no luck.
The page can be viewed here - http://staging.princewebdesigns.com/gallais/
See specifically the logo (being pushed down into the banner), the font of the tagline in the banner (wrapping beyond the banner and extending too far to the left), the 'Featured Work' title wrapping, the project names wrapping, and the footer wrapping.
Here is how the page should look - http://staging.princewebdesigns.com/gallais/images/chrome.png
To see how it looks on my iPhone, change the link above to .../iphone.png
Any help is appreciated.
The issue is (I think) that you have your browser's text zoomed in.
I loaded the page in Safari 5.1 on Mac OS 10.7.3, and it loaded fine initially. When I zoomed normally, the layout stayed intact. As soon as I tried zooming just the text, the layout broke per your description.
That being said, you may want to think hard about how to make the layout more 'flexible' in the event a user does have their text size increased. In IE, for example, the default zoom is full page zoom, but a user can still increase their text size apart from zooming. It's worth testing your layout in those situations to make sure it doesn't completely derail. I'm not saying it has to be perfect, but still legible.
One idea is to try out different units. I've found that when declaring horizontal lengths (e.g. margin-left) using relative measurements works, but when declaring vertical lengths, (e.g. margin-top) using pixel measurements works better. For super critical items, like the site logo, positon:absolute may be a good route to try.

I have the same problem described here whereby on higher dpi displays, firefox appears to be scaling my whole site up by 20%. This includes all site elements, not just text.
Is there a way to force firefox to display pixel-pixel accuracy? for example, I have a wrapper set to 800px at wider viewports, however, firefox is ignoring this by increasing it by 20%, which causes scrolling.
a working copy of the site is here
I have already set viewport and css reset.
The same issue is described here Note that don't want a local fix for this, but something that will work for anyone that views the site.
Thanks.
I'm going nuts on this, I can't figure out what causes the margins of the right sidebar gallery images to be rendered differently on opera browser. More specifically the bottom margin of the images seems to be doubled in every other common browser, its set to 2px and only opera displays it as 2 px.
This is the url - http://www.roxopolis.de/media See screenshots here.
Please help me out with this, I don't care too much about the fact that its displayed differently but it exposes a bit of the following gallery images which are supposed to remain hidden so thats what bothers me. If there is another way to hide the following images (which are placed by widget) that'd be fine too. Maybe setting the margin conditionally for opera?
I've had a quick look at the page in Dragonfly as well as Chrome's inspector for comparison and no particular style, including inherited ones, strikes me as "causing" this issue. Maybe someone else can find something, but at a glance, I'd say Opera seems to be "doing the right thing".
You might have more control over the spacing if you put each anchor tag along with its respective image inside its own container and tried to style those (e.g. a div containing the anchor containing the image for each item, and float them left within the parent container div).
Is there a particular reason you have more images than you want to display? I don't see any controls to scroll the images on that page, so I'm not sure why you need to have more than the six images you're showing already. Surely if you have code somewhere that randomises the order, you can change it so that it only displays the first six images.
Also, have you tried breaking the problem down to a smaller use case that can be tested/tweaked in a jsfiddle? That may help to get to the bottom of your issue if you can't solve it using the above suggestion.
I've noticed some strange behavior with both Chrome and Safari on my Mac:
Mountain Lion
Safari 6.0 (8536.25)
Chrome 21.0.1180.89
The page is a simple fixed div with some text in it, I added a second div that does a simple CSS translation over 5 seconds so you can easily see the difference. My web app is using CSS transitions to show and hide portions, and while it was doing this large portions of the screen seemed to shift.
I've placed example code and a .mov file out on a server so hopefully you will see the same issue:
http://physicaltable.com/index.html and http://physicaltable.com/CSS_JIGGLE_TEST_2.mov
The strange bolding doesn't occur in Chrome on Windows 7, nor does it happen on the iPad 2 (v5.1.1)
Has anyone else seen this type of issue?
I realize this isn't much of an answer, but I've found that it's mostly because of the rendering of the elements. If the element needs to use hardware or any other type of graphics rendering, it basically takes an image of the text, adjusts it, then rerenders the text (if it can).
The "taking a picture" is where the boldness is lost, since the browser/display/something is adding the flair that makes the text look good. Of course it doesn't look that good, but that's just me.
I've noticed with different colors other than all white/black, it can behave differently. I'm hoping things will get smoothed out as browsers and rendering advances.
I found solution for this bug
its enough simply force your browser to rerender that at moment move is stopped
E.g.
$("your_element_selector").css("color", "color");
where color can be even same color as your text has
I currently have a WordPress theme online and appears to work fine but one of my clients noted that the blog page layout is broken in Google Chrome. The sidebar appears right underneath the page content. So I checked his website and my demo and it does indeed look broken. So I have spoken to another programmer and he says it's not broken and he uses the latest version of Chrome too. I have never encountered such an issue, it works for some but not for others.
EDIT: The issue has been fixed with thanks to Joseph Erickson.
Looks like it has to do with the width of the #sidebar. If you shrink it just a little bit, it'll fit properly.
Why is this happening? Who knows. These little pixel shifts with floats can be hard to track down. I would recommend not trying to fit everything so snug together and allow some wiggle room when putting two fixed-width floating elements inside the same element.
I'm having a little problem with the auto-resizing feature!
I've already proficiently triple-checked (with the search-tool) that all my width-settings are set to %. There's nothing with a fixed width in the whole website. (Well, in fact yes, but nothing bigger than 100px, and in such case, not more than one per row).
But still, if I reisize the browser's windows by less than 420px width, the width of my body (html-body, of course :P) will stop by 420px and the well-known h-scrollbar appears.
Any ideas? Is there some sort of default-minimun-width? I've tried by setting a smaller body's min-width but with no results.
Just in case that's somehow helpful: the website is composed of an index (in html), two sets of three jQuery-script and one CSS files, which are alternatively wrote to the project when the site loads (one for desktop-browsers, one for mobile). I've already tried building the sites separatedly, with no better results.
I think I resloved problem with Firefox. I think FF allows to shrink website to minimal width which need toolbar with website address, searcher, bookmarks and so on. I was testing on CSS tricks which is great site if comes to mobiles :)
At the first screen at 280px width toolbar stops shrinking as the website. Sometimes I have there also Firebug icon or Fireftp icon which makes my sites stop shrinking earlier.
But right click on toolbar and unchecked Toolbar menu. Menu should hide and site still shrinking on resize. Here is Firefox and Chrome and as you can see they are quite similar as comes to minimal width.
If anyone will notice that this soultion is wrong and didn't work, please give me a feedback :)
