I'm new to wordpress and am trying to insert a Google map in a page.
I found tutorials for including a map using the "link" functionality on maps.google, but I want to load specific markers, defined in an xml file.
Do I need a plugin to do that ?
what you could do is create a page template file for your custom code..
ie:
make a copy of page.php open it up in your editor, and paste this at the top of the page before the get_header;
<?php
/*
Template Name: CustomMapPage
*/
?>
then after you do this & upload it, go back to your wordpress admin, the page you are trying to add the map to (reload/refresh that page) and on the right sidebar select from teh dropdown for template and assign it the value of 'CustomMapPage' then update your page,
Now your using a page template in which you can add code to, which will generate your map,
in your template page add your google api key and any other javascript files you need,
then following a tutorial like this or a plugin like this

I want to create a page in word press website, that shows information from external DB by API. What should I do?
But other pages and theme are in the Wordpress database.
Thanks in Advance
Set up a custom template. It can contain all the custom code you need, such as the API to call the external database. You create a new template by copying and modifying the page.php file from your theme. Just remove the parts you don't want and at the top put your new template name in a comment line like this:
/* Template Name: External-DB-Page */
Save that to a file such as external_db.php, upload it to your theme or child theme directory and then in your functions.php you include the file by adding
require_once 'external_db.php';
This new template called "External-DB-Page" will now be a selection available when choosing a page template for any page in WordPress.
In the wordpress admin dashboard, on the pages tab, when you edit the page, there's a section called "Page Attributes". One of the options is "Templates", which opens a drop-down list of templates available.
Is it actually possible to find which template name corresponds to which file in the theme editor without looking through every single file in the theme editor?
Shortest way to achieve this is, if you want to get the file name then you can add in the template name directly
<?php /* Template Name: Example Template (example_template.php) */ ?>
So you will see the Example Template (example_template.php) in template dropdown
I am trying to create a custom layout for my blog listing and blog content display pages.
The following url will display all the latest blogs based on the conditions that I have set.
http://fqdn/general-blog
When I click on the 'Read more' button corresponding to a button, it will display the full blog contents in another page.
Sample format : http://fqdn/general-blog/tourist-details
I am able to modify the layout of the page corresponding to blog listing. For this, I have created a custom tpl file : page--general-blog.tpl.php.
What I want is to create a new template file for displaying the contents of individual blogs.
The individual blog content display page is not entering - page--general-blog.tpl.php file. It's always using the template - page.tpl.php.
I tried creating separate tpl files like :
page--general-blog--%.tpl.php
But, the changes in this template is not getting effect in the individual blog content display page.
How should I move forward. Has someone had any similar situations?
If your content type has name general-blog,you should name single blog entry template as node--general-blog.tpl.php. See
Theming nodes by content type for details.
If you need to theme whole page template depending on node type, you should add following code in your template.php:
function YOURTHEME_preprocess_page(&$variables) {
if (!empty($variables['node']) && !empty($variables['node']->type)) {
$variables['theme_hook_suggestions'][] = 'page__node__' . $variables['node']->type;
}
}
And then use page--node--general-blog.tpl.php file (see Page templates depending on node type for details).
Don't forget to clear the theme registry after creating new template file.
I'm trying my make my first theme for wordpress.
Is there any possibility to create custom php page to display custom content?
Pretty much adding to WordPress another copy of the likes of single.php, post.php or 404.php.
All I want just a page to display the custom content on it.
Every tutorial I found so far uses just creating new page within WordPress.
I want to avoid it and for custom page to be enabled straight after theme activation.
The Idea is to have something like my_custom_page.php and to be able link to it after.
Is there any way of doing it?
Thanks
here is the solution to what I was looking for

To achieve custom page functionality you can use page template concept of wordpress. Creating a page template is extremely easy. Create any new file in your theme and start the file with a comment block like so:
<?php
/*
Template Name: My Awesome Custom Page
*/
<h1>Hello There</h1>
You need paste php code inside this template file. When you submit for then redirection action will be page with custom template page.

I want my WordPress blog to have a page called music. On that page I will query the DB for posts with the category music and then change around the look and feel of the posts. So I can't just put a link to /categories/music/ because I want to do custom work on the posts.
Should I put this code in a separate php file and link to it? I think I may lose access to all the nice WordPress API calls if I do that.
I was thinking about using a filter, but I am not sure which one to use. I was thinking something like the following except the_title has not been grabbed yet so I cannot check the title.
function show_music(){
if( is_page() && the_title('','',false) == 'music' ){
echo "got here";
}
}
add_filter('pre_get_posts', 'show_portfolio');
How would you go about this?
You need to put the below code in the file, and then put the file in the Theme folder. Then you can create a page using Wordpress pages and select a page template with the name you put in this comment:
/*
Template Name: Something Goes Here
*/
