please be gentle as my server knowledge is next to none!
I've been asked to make some CSS changes to a wordpress site - fine, I'm good at that! I have all the ftp info and the wordpress passwords, but as I edit files and try and re-upload them using Dream Weaver I get an error that I don't have permission to write to the particular file. So, the first thing I thought to do is right click the file and edit permissions, but as I try and do this I get the same problem of:
An FTP error occurred - cannot put the_file.js. Access denied.
The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem.
Make sure you have proper authorization on the server and the server is properly configured.
File activity incomplete. 1 file(s) or folder(s) were not completed.
Files with errors: 1
So, my question is - by knowing the ftp details is there any way I can change the permissions, or is it something to do with server configuration that I have no control over? Many thanks
This means that the FTP username you were provided does not have permission to modify files. YOu won't be able to reset the permissions either. You should contact the server admin and have them grant your user account the appropriate permissions to modify files.

i know that people couldn't say that this is trivial, but i have search for days in internet and can not be able to do this.
i am using visual studio 2010 ultimate and have created my setup with setup and deployment of vs 2010.the problem is that i have an application folder which contains my database and which is deployed with my application. When i deploy it in administrator part of computer, all is correct, i devined that it is due to fullcontrol permission of administrator programfiles folder. But when i deploy it in another account, application don't has access to database for writting. i looked for the web site and understood that this is due to programfiles folder permission for others users. So i decide to do another research in order to give more rights to users for this folder.
I finally understood that i can achieve this with authoring tools like robocopy by using custom action or with a command line by just correctly write my custom action. After more researchs, i understood that i can do it with a command line which use robocopy and give folder permission during installation for this custom action or only with custom action.
for custom action, i tried many links, but the best link that i obtained was (How to give Read/Write permissions to a Folder during installation using .NET) without success (i change /folder="[CommonAppDataFolder][ProductName] with /folder="[CommonAppDataFolder][Manufacturer][ProductName] in customactiondata" due to the fact that product name is in my manufacturer folder").i don't understand why this code don't change folder permissions during installing and don't know how i can use robocopy or icalcs in custom action to change folder permissions during installation. my setup and others requirements have been packaged with dotnetInstaller, i dont know if i can be able to continue use it.
please, i greatly need your help to be able to do this
i have solved the problem. After many trying, i understood that i was giving permission to the wrong folder because my documents and database were contained in programfile folder. after understand this, i only change the place to set permission by :/folder="[ProgramFilesFolder][Manufacturer][ProductName]" and permission have been setted.
I am in a really interesting situation right now.
After migrating a client website from a development environment using, WP Clone by WP Academy, I get this error when trying to upload images via the Worpress media uploader.
“image.png” has failed to upload due to an error
Unable to create directory uploads/2015/07. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
I logged into Godaddy and change the entire uploads/ folder permission via ssh to 777 (crazy enough). And all its contents.
I still got the same error.
After probing a little deeper, I found out the website is running from a different location than the machine i am sshed into.
What do I mean?
When I run pwd via ssh, to see my current working directory I get.
-bash-4.2$ pwd
/home/clientname/html/wp-content/uploads
But In the Wordpress setting at, Settings -> Media
The option "store uploads in this folder" has a value of
/home4/d***71/public_html/website.url/wp-content/uploads
Meaning The site files are copied and hosted in a different location than that given via the SSH, This is probably due to the fact that Godaddy's managed wordpress hosting has some special cache setting configured beyond the control of the user.
The problem now is how do I correct the File Permission issue and have my uploads working properly.
:)
I am just adding this, if anyone ran into the same issue in future.
Log into your GoDaddy account.
Go to the Hosting page.
Click Manage
Select File Manager for the domain you want to edit the permission (this is, if you have multiple domains)
Navigate to the folder where you have installed the WordPress.
Hover on the 'wp-content' and you should able to see an arrow, click to see the option called 'Change Permissions'.
You should able to see all the Permission details in this window.
login into your godaddy panel and click file manager
click or open your project folder
locate upload folder and click on check box
click into the privacy icon and check inherit an SET ALL SUB FOLDERS TO INHERIT PERMISSIONS both checkboxes
The "Hover" didn't work for me. What DID work was to go to the directory above, put ONE check in a box for a DIRECTORY (not a file), and then click on "Privacy".
GoDaddy Permissions
If you check more than one folder, OR a file, you won't get the permissions eyeball to light up.
So, to fix a file permission you would have to go to the level above, and change "Set all subfolders to inherit permissions".
Apparently you can't change some files and not others - just the parent folder, which then sets all the files (is my guess).
This is NOT a limitation of Windows, it's the broken way they establish permissions.
Anyway - hopefully that will work. Tech support confirmed the drop down doesn't work anymore.

I have one server that works (that I originally remember took me a loooong time to figure out--dont remember solution). I copy the exact same permissions to the new server, and it does not work. 'Everyone' is given total permission.
I have given permissions to _IUSR, IIS_USR, and Everyone., yet I still have errors with PHP trying to write/modify files.
Whats up?
You didn't mention IIS version you are using and what's application you are trying to run on top of it - these would be helpful to get a proper answer.
Looking at account names you mentioned you are running IIS 7.x... If you are running app which requires some fancy permissions config on its folders and files just try to temporarily grant full access to Everyone and IUSR from the top of app folder (overwriting everything below it) just to verify that this is permissions problem indeed.
i have a admin system, currently allow login user to upload a file,
but i found that it can not overwrite the file with same file name, it return access denied error
im wondering if i set impersonation = true in web.config, what impact will have?
(i know there is another way to solve my upload overwrite issue, but just want to ask the impact of impersonation)
Thanks
This is obviously a permission related issue so you need to check for permissions on folder for the users application pool, network service and aspnet
Check read only attribute of the files that are throwing access denied. many times, user uploads images from CD.
When you are saving file, try to remove read only flag and save the file so that when overwritten not throw errors.
i completed my client site in wordpress, then i uploaded this site into client server(FTP) but site is not going to open
this error is occur
"
Warning: fopen(piecemakerXML.xml) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in F:\inetpub\vhosts\kni.com.my\httpdocs\wp-content\themes\twentyten\header.php on line 133
can't open file"
It's a file system permissions problem. WordPress does not have permission to access that file or the folder it's in. You'll have to change that. Most FTP programs have a CHMOD command built in, or you can shell in to the server, or use the hosting control panel.
Check the permissions of the file to ensure it is at least readable by the owner. And if you also want to write to it, it should be writable
Check out the page on Wordpress about file permissions. It has a pretty good list of example permissions

Also Check out wikipedia
And to Change file permissions, do what #Dan said in his answer.
