Scripting.FileSystemObject location (from JavaScript) - directory

I have a file for my Windows sidebar gadget that stores some settings for the user, but the FSO object seems to pick its native residence as the desktop, meaning that if I don't specify a directory, it will put this file on the desktop. I would specify the whole location, but I want to be able to put this on other people's computers without having stuff on their desktop or elsewhere besides the gadget folder.
I know this is possible in XMLHttpRequest, but I've had trouble with that in the past, and it would be better if I could just avoid it altogether, if possible.
function writeSetting(text)
{
var fil = new ActiveXObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject");
var writer = fil.OpenTextFile("loc.txt", 2, true);
writer.WriteLine(text);
writer.Close();
}

Use the System.Gadget.path property to get the gadget's path and append to it as needed. See the example in the link.
Happy coding.

AE Extendscript layered source file

I'm working on a script that does find/replace for missing items in your project. Unfortunately I'm running into a situation detecting and then replacing layered image sources (psd, ai, etc.).
1) I see no way of detecting if a AvItem is a layer within a layered image other than parsing the item.name, which is unreliable because a user can always rename items in the project panel.
2) Once I do know that it is a part of a layered image I cannot figure out how to re-link it to the correct image without replacing the layer with the merged image. item.replace(new_path) will replace that item with the whole image, not the layer within the image. For example:
var item = app.project.item(3); //assuming this is the 'layer' we want to replace
item.replace(new_path);
So is there a secret property somewhere which will reliably tell me if an item is a part of a layered image, and if so is there a way to relink it without replacing the layer with the entire merged image?
EDIT
Here's a function to guess if a layer is part of a layered image. It's not bullet-proof but it should work as long as the user does not rename the item:
function isSourceLayered (av_item) {
// check if there is a "/"
if (av_item.name.indexOf("/") != -1) {
// check if it is in a "layers" folder
if (av_item.parentFolder.name.indexOf("Layers") != -1) {
return true;
}
}
return false;
}
I just asked the same question on the Adobe extendscript forum. Unless there's undocumented features (and I spent a bit of time looking with Extendscript Toolkit's data browser) the fileSource object doesn't seem to have any attributes or methods to do this.
There is a kind of a workaround, you can import the file using ImportOptions.importAs(ImportAsType.COMP) This will import a comp, and you can loop through the layers matching the name, get the source of that layer and use that as your new source. But as you say, it doesn't work if the source has been renamed.
I've written this into a function, it's available on github Edit: I forgot that I changed the way that function works. It doesn't re-import layer sources because of this problem, it just uses the Duplicate menu command.

Closure Templates generates code that does not use StringBuilder

I recently pull a project from GitHub that included a compile-soy task in its build.xml. The task uses SoyToJsSrcCompiler.jar to compile a couple of soy files into javascript. The project included the target directory so I could see that the compiled files contain code like this:
jive.fbldr.soy.attachments = function(opt_data, opt_sb) {
var output = opt_sb || new soy.StringBuilder();
output.append('<div class="fbldr-attachments"><div class="fbldr-attach-head"><p>Use the following form to upload file attachments and, optionally, include a variable to reference the uploaded file in the form\'s HTML source.</p><p>Multiple files may be attached, but only one at a time. Click "Finished" when all files have been attached.</p></div><div class="fbldr-attach-field"><label>Link to HTML Variable (optional) : </label></div><div class="fbldr-attach-field"><select id="fbldr-attach-link"><option value="" selected="selected">Select HTML variable...</option>');
var optionList34 = opt_data.variables;
var optionListLen34 = optionList34.length;
When I run the same task without any code changes, the resulting compiled keeps replacing opt_sb with opt_ignored and stripped out all references to soy.StringBuilder. I ran "java -jar lib/SoyToJsSrcCompiler.jar --outputPathFormat target/soy2/fbldr.soy templates/fbldr.soy" by hand instead of using the build.xml. I get the same result.
jive.fbldr.soy.attachments = function(opt_data, opt_ignored) {
var output = '<div class="fbldr-attachments"><div class="fbldr-attach-head"><p>Use the following form to upload file attachments and, optionally, include a variable to reference the uploaded file in the form\'s HTML source.</p><p>Multiple files may be attached, but only one at a time. Click "Finished" when all files have been attached.</p></div><div class="fbldr-attach-field"><label>Link to HTML Variable (optional) : </label></div><div class="fbldr-attach-field"><select id="fbldr-attach-link"><option value="" selected="selected">Select HTML variable...</option>';
var optionList4 = opt_data.variables;
var optionListLen4 = optionList4.length;
From all the Closure Templates documentation I've read, it is expected the output will use StringBuilder. I cannot figure out why my call keeps generating output that ignores the StringBuilder. Would someone happen to know what could cause this?
StringBuilder was appropriate for Internet Explorer 7 and earlier browsers. For modern browsers simple string concatenation is more efficient and Closure Templates was changed to make that mode the default mode (as an added bonus, the code is smaller). It sounds like the documentation has not been updated to reflect this change.
If for compatibility reasons your require StringBuilder you can set this option on the command-line using --codeStyle stringbuilder

Upload mutliple files using FileUpload asp.net

I have been struggling with this issue for some time now.
I have a web interface where I create projects, with this you should be able to upload multiple documents to the server, which is attached to the project they belong to.
So far I made it work with only uploading one file at a time.
My idea was maybe to add the "file" objects in an arralylist and then bind it to a gridview and then upload it to the server?
I know this sound a bit confusing, but I'm confused also!
This is how my method look like when I upload a single file to the server and also save the file's ID, name and context in the database:
File file = new File();
Projects_Overview po = new Projects_Overview();
po.Name = TextBoxName.Text;
po.Time = time;
po.Owner = TextBoxOwner.Text;
po.Responsibility = TextBoxResp.Text;
po.Created = datecreate;
po.StartDate = datestart;
po.FinishDate = datefinish;
po.ETC = dateETC;
po.Description = TextBoxDesc.Text;
po.Comments = TextBoxComments.Text;
po.Remember = TextBoxRemember.Text;
ie.Projects_Overview.AddObject(po);
ie.SaveChanges();
if (uploadFile.HasFile)
{
string filepath = uploadFile.PostedFile.FileName;
string fileName = Path.GetFileName(filepath);
file.Context = Path.GetFileNameWithoutExtension(uploadFile.PostedFile.FileName);
file.Extension = Path.GetExtension(uploadFile.PostedFile.FileName).Replace(".", "").Substring(0, 4);
file.FileName = Guid.NewGuid();
string fileSavePath = Server.MapPath("") + "\\Wordfiles\\" + Convert.ToString(file.FileName) + ".upl";
uploadFile.PostedFile.SaveAs(fileSavePath);
file.ProjectID = po.ID;
ie.File.AddObject(file);
ie.SaveChanges();
Can someone tell me how to "attach" multiple files and then save them in the folder along with the other data as I posted above?
Cheers
I believe that HTML 5 has the built-in capability to handle multi-file uploads (where HTML4 does not), but I have not worked with HTML5 yet. With HTML4, you must use an external control (typically either javascript or flash), as there is no built-in mechanism to allow multi-file uploads.
I did write a multi file upload page that works with HTML4 or HTML5 utilizing PLupload (an external control) to perform the file picking. I had to find a generic file handler to interface the control to the .aspx upload page. I think that I found that here.
It took a couple hours to implement, but it's worked great.

ASP.NET creating resources at runtime

I'm developing an ASP.NET webapp that has a multilanguage feature allowing the webmaster to create new languages at runtime.
The approach that I was thinking is the following:
The user selects one available (not created) language.
When the user confirms, the application automatically copies a set of existing resources, replacing the filename with the new culture. For example: default.aspx.en-us.resx to default.aspx.es-ar.resx.
The user edits the recently created resources.
Currently I'm having troubles with step number 2. I've achieved to copy the resources, but then these new resources are ignored. I think that this happens because the new resources are not included in the running assembly, and therefore are being ignored.
When I test the following code in my local project, I would have to manually add the new resources to the solution and then recompile to make it work.
Does anyone know how to make this work?
This is the code of the mentioned copy.
string _dir = path_ + "App_LocalResources\\\\";
DirectoryInfo _dirInfo = new DirectoryInfo(_dir);
foreach (FileInfo _file in _dirInfo.GetFiles("*en-us.resx")) {
_file.CopyTo(_dir + _file.Name.Replace("en-us", idioma_.Cultura));
}
string _dir2 = path_ + "App_GlobalResources\\\\";
_dirInfo = new DirectoryInfo(_dir2);
foreach (FileInfo _file in _dirInfo.GetFiles("*en-us.resx")) {
_file.CopyTo(_dir2 + _file.Name.Replace("en-us", idioma_.Cultura));
}
Thank you very much.
Creating or editing Resource files is not possible the same way as reading data.
In order to create or edit a resource file, you should do it the same way you create or edit XML files because resource files have with a specific structured XML elements.

Preventing Flex application caching in browser (multiple modules)

I have a Flex application with multiple modules.
When I redeploy the application I was finding that modules (which are deployed as separate swf files) were being cached in the browser and the new versions weren't being loaded.
So i tried the age old trick of adding ?version=xxx to all the modules when they are loaded. The value xxx is a global parameter which is actually stored in the host html page:
var moduleSection:ModuleLoaderSection;
moduleSection = new ModuleLoaderSection();
moduleSection.visible = false;
moduleSection.moduleName = moduleName + "?version=" + MySite.masterVersion;
In addition I needed to add ?version=xxx to the main .swf that was being loaded. Since this is done by HTML I had to do this by modifying my AC_OETags.js file as below :
function AC_FL_RunContent(){
var ret =
AC_GetArgs
( arguments, ".swf?mv=" + getMasterVersion(), "movie", "clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000"
, "application/x-shockwave-flash"
);
AC_Generateobj(ret.objAttrs, ret.params, ret.embedAttrs);
}
This is all fine and works great. I just have a hard time believing that Adobe doesn't already have a way to handle this. Given that Flex is being targeted to design modular applications for business I find it especially surprising.
What do other people do? I need to make sure my application reloads correctly even if someone has once per session selected for their 'browser cache checking policy'.
I had a similar problem, and ended up putting the SWF files in a sub-directory named as the build number. This meant that the URL to the SWF files pointed to a different location each time.
Ideally this should be catered for by the platform, but no joy there. But this works perfectly for us, and integrates very easily into our automated builds with Hudson - no complaints so far.
Flex says:
http://www.adobe.com/livedocs/flex/2/docs/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=LiveDocs_Parts&file=00001388.html
What I have done is checksum the SWF file and then add that to its url. Stays the same until the file is rebuilt/redeployed. Handled automagically by a few lines of server-side PHP script
here is sample.
function AC_FL_RunContent(){
var ret = AC_GetArgs(arguments, ".swf?ts=" + getTS(), "movie",
"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000",
"application/x-shockwave-flash");
AC_Generateobj(ret.objAttrs, ret.params, ret.embedAttrs);
}
function getTS() {
var ts = new Date().getTime();
return ts;
}
AC_OETags.js is file and it exists html-template several places.
but as my posting said, I am facing another type of problem.
The caching is not done by Flash Player but by the browser, so it's out of Adobe's control. I think you have found a workable solution. If I want to avoid caching I usually append a random number on the URL.
