I want to track views for stories on my site. I want to use Google analytics to do this. Off the bat Im thinking of doing this:
pageTracker._trackEvent('Story', 'View', 'Title of story');
But I also would prefer to track with the story id as well that is passed in the url. So if I want to run a report in GA I would like to have the option of getting stats by story title or by story id that is passed via url. Is that possible?
GA by default does not strip parameters from the URL when _trackPageview is triggered, so you will see unique pages show up in your reports. For example, these two will show up as separate entries:
/somePage.html?id=1
/somePage.html?id=2
edit:
Okay, you can use this to get whatever url parameter you want:
function getParam (n) {
var x=new RegExp("[\\?&]"+n.replace(/[\[]/,"\\\[").replace(/[\]]/,"\\\]")+"=([^&#]*)");
var r=x.exec(window.location.href);
return(r==null)?'':r[1] ;
}
// example
var story = getParam('story'));
now story has whatever value the story=xxx URL parameter value is, and you can use story as your category value in your event tracking argument

Im trying to extract parameters from the URL. Then send that data to google analytics via GTM. Using only one tag instead of having mulitple tags for each parameter.
website.com/index?searched=data%7Cdata%7Cdata
The data needs to be seperated. So I've created a variable that seperates each paramater.
function () {
var x = {{URL Query}}.split("|");
var z = x.slice(1, -1);
return z;
}
And a trigger that picks up on click.
I'm fairly new to google tag manager, and i'm unsure of the process to do this. Should I work with Datalayers or do a loop with Custom HTML tag? But then i'm not sure what the code is to send my data to google analytics.
What you need to do is to create multiple variables if you want to capture different parameters in the URL to separate dimensions in Google Analytics. When looking at your code I can see that you want to get the last value separated by "|". Take your code, place it within a "Custom Javascript" variable and then in your Google Analytics tag you can just map the variable to whatever dimension you have set up for this purpose.
Lastly, if you want to pick up more parameters in the URL, just create a a new Custom javascript variable, capture the parameter then map it to another dimension in the Google Analytics tag.
Hope this helps.
Let's say I have a site and the user comes into it with a parameter:
http://example.com&url=blahblahblah
How do I go about passing along the url value from the parameter into Google Analytics?
1) User comes to the page with a url in the params
2) User clicks a download link with a ga tracking code attached to it which was generated from ga account like this:
http://example.com/download/param1=dkljdf&_ga=1.149898996.39207121.1424368466
You have to create a custom Dimension and a metric for that.
About custom Dimensions and metrics:
https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/platform/customdimsmets
After you have created a Dimension, you can add metrics to it by view, in example.
Follow the steps here for Universal Analytics:
https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/custom-dims-mets
Note that due to not have 10 point of reputation, I wrote the a "_" in http like "ht_tp"
BUT:
I think what you want to know is the number os visitors that clicks a download link in your site that comes from, lets say "blahblahblah" as web origin or other methods.
For that, you have the param utm_source that you can receive directly in the url.
So instead of ht_tp://example.com&url=origin you should receive ht_tp://example.com&utm_source=origin
In this way, you have no care about it. Analytics is going to take care for you so you can get a report of clicks by source.
Or, just use the referer in case all the incoming visitors are from webs:
ga('set', 'referrer', 'ht_tp://example.com');
And a final option, to use Events:
_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'ReferencedVisitors', jsVarWhereYouHaveTheOrigin]);
I am in the process of setting up enhanced Ecommerce for GA and have had a few requests of additional of what else the client would like to see in their reports. Once of which is
"Where can i see a report if the locations that a use types in when they use the store locator"
There is already an internal search functionality thats been set up and is tracking the search terms people are typing when looking for products, but i'm not sure if i would need to set this up as a second search terms report or if it's something different?
The URL of the page is different to the internal search results and is www.domain.com/store-locator#wales|GB|0|0|0
Any insight into this would be really helpful.
Thanks,
Roxi
As to me knowledge, you are not able to use bookmarks (#something) in GA for internal site search setup. Only GET and POST parameters are allowed. In your situation I think the best solution is to use GA events to send the data about used location each time the user is using this functionality. You need to include addition ga() function call to track those events. Info about how to set it up you could find here: event tracking. After setting things up, you will see all the info about number and type of called events in Behavior -> Events reports section in GA.
Example code:
<button onlick="var hash_location=window.location.hash;ga('send','event','Locator',has_location)">Click me</button>
With such function new event will be send to GA with Event Category=Locator and Event Action=hash in the url. You have some complicated hash, so most probably you need to extract first some info from this using regular expression. Example to get first item from |-separated list in the hash:
var pattern = new RegExp('[^#|]+');
var hash_location = pattern.exec(window.location.hash)[0];
our marketing consultant has asked me to help with configuring google analytics to setup Goal Tracking for User Signups... from what I've read this is accomplished by assigning the URL of the page the user is directed to after a successful signup to the Goal you are trying to track.
but what if the URL your user is directed to is a URL they regularly visit? e.g. after signing up they are directed to their profile page - which is the same page they visit every time they login. is there some way to configure a referer to go with the goal URL so that it is the pair of them that define the goal? e.g. user visits /profile and is referred by /signup.
further complication: what if after signup the user is directed to a different page depending on the user type? it would be nice to configure a single Goal with multiple URLs (but still using the referer restriction described above).
an alternative would be to use an event... if the server creates a user then it could signal the view to output the javascript code that generates the appropriate event.
or... is there a way for server-side code to send events to google analytics? is there an api?
If your users are directed to is a URL they regularly visit you can make a conditional statement for the goal occasion with a virtual pageview, have a look at this: http://services.google.com/analytics/breeze/en/et_vps/index.html
If after signup the user is directed to a different page depending on the user type, you can use regular expressions to set goal URL pattern, like this ^user./login./(type1|type2|type3)/$, look here for more info: http://services.google.com/analytics/breeze/en/regex_ga/index.html
I came across this question in google and believe I found a more appropriate answer.
Google Analytics now provide a service called Analytics Measurement Protocol.
This will allow you to send server-side requests to track your users activities in your analytics account.
To track a sign up event as mentioned in the question, the best way I can see would be to first create an event based goal in your account with the category set to 'users' and an action as 'sign_up' (you can optionally provide a label and value). Then in your code once a successful sign-up occurs (maybe when a user confirms their activation email link?), send a POST request to www.google-analytics.com/collect with the following payload:
v=1 // Version.
&tid=UA-XXXXX-Y // Tracking ID / Property ID.
&cid=555 // Anonymous Client ID.
&t=event // Event hit type
&ec=user // Event Category. Required.
&ea=sign_up // Event Action. Required.
&el=label // Event label.
&ev=1 // Event value.
A full list of the parameters and their meanings are defined here: https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/protocol/v1/parameters
You could use an event that is triggered when the user submits the sign-up form :
onsubmit="_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Category','Action','Label','Value']);"
and use the Category / Action / Label data model in Google Analytics to pass whatever data you need to pass, for example :
onsubmit="_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Sign-up','Premium','6-month',6]);"
You then have to configure this Goal in Google Analytics as an Event, which lets you choose which combination of each of the fields Category / Action / Label / Value you want to use.
Another option, maybe less maintenance-heavy, is to use a query-string to identify people that get back to the Profile page after having just signed up. So instead of sending them back to /user/profile after they sign up, you send them back to /user/profile/?sign-up=true.
You will then be able to track these pages as a URL goal in GA using a Regular expression like :
\?sign-up=true
I wrote a helper function for tracking GA events.
function trackGoogleAnalyticsEvent(category, action, label) {
try {
ga('send', 'event', category, action, label);
} catch (e) {
console.warn('Google analytics error: ' + e);
}
}
Usage:
trackGoogleAnalyticsEvent('Signup', 'Signup Success', 'Facebook');
How can you modify the URL for the current page that gets passed to Google Analytics?
(I need to strip the extensions from certain pages because for different cases a page can be requested with or without it and GA sees this as two different pages.)
For example, if the page URL is http://mysite/cake/ilikecake.html, how can I pass to google analytics http://mysite/cake/ilikecake instead?
I can strip the extension fine, I just can't figure out how to pass the URL I want to Google Analytics. I've tried this, but the stats in the Google Analytics console don't show any page views:
pageTracker._trackPageview('cake/ilikecake');
Thanks,
Mike
You could edit the GA profile and add custom filters ...
Create a 'Search and Replace' custom filter, setting the filter field to 'Request URI' and using something like:
Search String: (.*ilikecake\.)html$
Replace String: $1
(was \1)
Two possibilities come to mind:
it can take a while, up to about 24 hours, for visits to be reflected in the Analytics statistics. How long ago did you make your change?
try beginning the pathname with a "/", so
pageTracker._trackPageview('/cake/ilikecake');
and then wait a bit, as per the first item.
Usually you have the ga script code at the end of your file, while special _trackPageviews() calls are often used somewhere else.
Have you made sure you have your call to pageTracker._trackPageview() after you have defined the pagetracker?
Like this:
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-XXXXXXX-X");
pageTracker._trackPageview();
otherwise you just get a JavaScript error I suppose.
