The page calls this method once BEFORE the page Load event so that all controls on the page or created in the Init event will have their values set from the form post before you start working with them in the Load event code. It calls it a second time because you might have added some dynamic controls during the Load event, and this gives them a chance to get their values set as well.

What is the most correct asp.net page lifecycle event to change a label's text?

Joined a company that use Asp.Net, a tech that I had never worked with before. I have a very simple task to do which is to change a label's text depending on a value that is included in the logged in user's session.
I considered Init, Page Load and PreRender and ended up placing my code in the PreRender event and got a comment in a code review from the main code reviewer saying "this does not belong here, go and investigate the page lifecycle to figure out why"
According to the docs:
Init should be used to "initialize control properties" (which seems to be about right for this case).
Page Load should be used to "set properties in controls and to establish DB connections".
PreRender should be used to "make the final changes to the page or its controls"
I can't see an obvious event that should be used instead of the others. I wrote above that Asp.Net is new to me so I may be missing something.
Which event should be used in this particular case, and in general, to change properties of controls?

Asp.net output cache substitution with postback in user control

We have a site where all pages are output cached, i.e. the caching is on aspx-level with VaryByParam="*". Now there is a requirement to make a gallup control, i.e. a small "How is this site working for you?" and then when the user clicks an answer the results are shown.
The gallup is implemented as a usercontrol that is added to the master page so gallups can be added to any page to which a gallup is created in the cms. The problem is that output cache naturally caches all clicks so when user no 2 votes he sees the results that where calculated after the first vote on that alternative.
Now I'm trying to use cache substition. I added an asp:Substition tag where the user control used to be, load the control dynamically and render it (using this approach http://coderwall.com/p/4ajzqq). The problem is that the postbacks that voting triggers is never fired. Apparently the method that the substition control executes is loaded outside the page life cycle or too late.
Any ideas?

I solved this by skipping the substitution control and just used the user control as normal, so the gallup/question view was output cached. Then in the click handler for the answer alternatives I added
Response.Cache.SetNoServerCaching();
which exempted the results view from output cache and hence it was updated as it should.
It is also possible to use Response.Cache.SetNoServerCaching() in Global.asax, using VaryByCustom. It merely requires sensing in Global.asax whether the page is a post-back or not. Here is a code example.

Force the ASP.NET page lifecycle to go forward

Ok, so I am working on a custom framework above the .NET framework, and some instructions are not written / called at the good places.
For example, a postback is done on the same page. Then, a Response.redirect occurs right within the page_load; but at this point, the new values of the controls of the page are not yet handled, so they get lost...
Therefore, I wanted to know whether it was possible to force the pagelife_cycle to go forward before the call to response.redirect, so that I can get the right values.
I can't just make that call in another function, because the page I am working on is called by many web applications (about 1-2k), and it would completely change their behaviour, which is not acceptable!
Is that even possible?
See a bit the second image and the Load PostBack Data section. Before the Load event of the page is raised, a textbox is already initialized. You can catch the value by overriding OnPreLoad or by adding a handler at PreLoad event.

ASP.NET: How to initialize when *user control* is initially loaded

I have an ASP.NET user control that I'm embedding in another user control. This works fine.
I need to know the best logic/method for detecting when the control is loaded. In other words, I have some display initialization logic that needs to run when the control is initially displayed. Surely there is a pattern for this.
The typical method is to put (!IsPostBack) logic in the Page_Load method of the control. This works great until you end up with a state when the Parent page has already posted back many times. My user control gets added to the page but its display does not intialize properly.
I'm hoping to find a way that keeps this logic inside the control, versus various hacking around in the codebehind of the parent page.
See the following MS article. They have an example that places several controls within a user control and initializes them.

in response to a question below: the information required to determine which controls to restore is contained in a dedicated viewstate object.
I am dynamically creating controls in the codebehind page - these controls are all hooked up to click handlers so when a postback occurs I must re-create the previous set of controls, then clear the controls down and generate the new set of controls based on the previous click.
This is coded and working correctly under normal circumstances esentially as follows:
in Page_Load
if not postback generate default buttons
else if postback re-generate buttons that were shown on last page
in click_handler
Clear the dynamically generated buttons created in the Page_Load
generate new buttons based on the specific click being handled
however when the server comes under load we start getting problems:
With 5 users per second we start getting the exception:
Multiple controls with the same ID 'add0' were found. FindControl requires that controls have unique IDs.
With 100 users per second we start getting the exception:
The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases.
Once this occurs all subsequent requests get the same error and IIS has to be re-started.
What could be causeing this and how can I avoid it? Do html requests possibly overwrite and interfere with each other when under load? do objects somehow hand around after a page unload in a manner that would allow the next page load to trip over them?
How are you storing information about the controls you need to restore? If you are using ViewState or ControlState, then I don't see how load could affect things. That's how any of the composite controls do things.
I will say that I saw your second error while using the Infragistics UltraWebGrid, and never was able to track it down. From the call stack, it appeared that EnsureChildControls was being called during the Load phase (or maybe LoadViewState).
A private static variable was being used to store a dictionary of names and table cells so that table cells would not get re-created during the page lifecycle.
The key point is that it was marked static - it should have been an instance variable - the end result being that under load when requests started backing up then multpile requests were sharing this static dictionary.
exactly what happened i'm not 100% sure - but under medium loads FindControl would find multiple controls of the same name, under very high loads it seems one request would try to modify a control (probably add to it) while it was in an invalid state from the other request.
End result - if you dont really know what your doing - prefer instance variable sto static variables.
Everything you have written seems to be correct and doable. Most likely this is an issue with your control generation code. Perhaps if you post some of that we can better find a solution.
