facebook like Notificaton system in mvc2.net - asp.net

i m developing an application in asp.net 3.5 using mvc2. i want to implement facebook like notification system based on server push or comet. i have no idea where and what to start with. i have read about Pokein but don't know how to integrate it with mvc. any suggestions are held highly
thanks
Adeel

There are sample MVC projects for PokeIn library (visit here). On the other hand, PokeIn is a good choice in comparison to other alternatives. (License costs, event ordering, disconnection detection, "reverse ajax" support etc)..
Also, you may need to check the documentation for PokeIn here

Check out WebSync, a comet framework for .NET. Easy to use, lots of examples...should do what you want.

Migrating from asp.net webforms, do you recommend mvc or web api?

I know I´m late for this party.
Currently migrating form asp.net webforms to newer coding technologies and paradigms. Barely got started with asp.net mvc and now I´m noticing all this fuzz about mvc vs webapi. I'm an oldschool programmer and don´t really feel confortable with the "use both" approach, if there´s no need to. Please consider this:
My web projects focus on dynamic dashboards/admin sites to manage CRUD operations for tons of SQL records, generate reports on demand, statistics, etc.
No static websites at all (like info sites, portfolios and such).
Performance over UI design. Actually bootstrap basic UI is enough for me.
Pure ADO over entity framework, whenever possible.
Any tip or guidence on what I should choose would be very much appreciated.
* Edit/Closing *
Hi again and thank you for your feedback.
After a lot of reading and experimentation I´ve decided to give a real hard tryout to asp.net webapi + angular.js, mostly because I want to leave the door open for multiplatform/device usage (not web only).
Also, I found a very interesting article/tutorial in https://superdevelopment.com/2013/12/16/building-rich-web-apps-jquery-vs-angular-js/
It may be a little old but I think it´s worth reading, specially this extract right here: "Angular.js and WebAPI is a new way to build rich interactive web applications that fully embraces what can be done with a Web browser, JavaScript and C# rather than relying on out-dated paradigms that complicate the process for all but simple use cases. If your users and clients are expecting an application in a web browser that behaves like a native app on their desktop or smart phone, then jQuery + ASP.NET MVC is not the most straightforward way to build it."
Anyway, thanks to all and I hope this info helps others in the programming community.
if your application is going to be consumed various type of devices then prefer web api.
if your application is like website or portal where user has very little interaction then go for MVC

Rich Internet Application (RIA) for Oracle Database Application

Our Oracle application is written in Oracle Forms. However, there is a requirement for it to be a Rich Internet Application (RIA). I.e. no deployment, accessed via web, looks and navigates (tabbing etc) as closely to a desktop GUI application as possible.
Apex has been discarded as not good enough and will not produce a sufficiently good user experience and does not look good compared to other technologies.
Silverlight is being suggested as the best way forward, but I would like to know what else is out there.
I have had suggestions that the way forward is to use HTML5/CSS, but we need a good framework for managing records. I do not wish to be reinventing the wheel. I understand that Silverlight for Business Applications takes care of some of those requirements.
Also, the idea is to create web services in Oracle and have a Silverlight front-end. Is this possible / the right way of doing things?
Any pointers in the right direction or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Oracle Apex has all the features that you are looking for. You can customize it using CSS, users can access it using web and since your current application is in Oracle Forms, you can reuse a lot of your code written in Oracle procedures/packages/triggers. Also, the learning curve for your Oracle Developers would be very smooth.
I'd suggest you to try and create a small module for your future project and see how effective it is in terms of both Development time and the rich UI.
I don't know much about it, but you might want to look at FormSpider.
And of course there is Oracle ADF.
Like Rajesh, I bridle at the suggestion that Apex is "not good enough", having been heavily involved in a very successful Apex project ;-)
From my point of view, there is no direct dependence between your future RIA's and the RDBMS you are using now. In other words, features and advantages of Silverlight\Entity Framework are almost equal for different data sources (e.g SQL Server,Oracle and etc).
Also, the idea is to create web
services in Oracle and have a
Silverlight front-end. Is this
possible / the right way of doing
things?
Using a middle tier (WCF or WCF RIA Services) as a data access layer will be more preferable than creating web-services in Oracle.
This tutorial can be usefull for you to get some general view of the Silverlight and WCF Ria Services.

GOOD tutorial(s) for learning the ASP.Net security/authentication framework

Through a lot of sticking my head in the sand, reinventing the wheel and general stubbornness, I've managed to go all this time (years) avoiding learning the built-in ASP.Net support for web application authentication, users and roles. Part of the reason is that rolling my own originally seemed like less work than getting my head around all the different layers of optional abstraction provided by the ASP.Net security framework and as such I came up with a nice library that worked fine for me.
I'm now trying to go back to using as much of the built in functionality of ASP.Net (MVC2/3, not WebForms) as possible, as I've found that the more non-standard functionality you build into an application, the harder it is for other developers to pick up your code and work with it.
The web is thick with half-tutorials, badly explained articles and information that excludes important beneath-the-hood information about the ASP.Net security framework.
Are there any good tutorials that rip the lid off ASP.Net security and show you how to use it and how it all works without trying to push you through wizards and specific provider models without understanding all of the options and their pros and cons?
This is a 18 part series articles from Scott Mitchell.
It's a very deep explanation of all the features that regards Authentication, Authorization and Membership providers in asp.net. I did never found a better source on this from the same author.
MSDN is the best for ripping the lid off: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff647070.aspx

Comet programming and asp.net

i want to push data to user browser if an event happens on browser. with commet programming we can do this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_%28programming%29
are any good tutorials available on net??
you should try PokeIn comet ajax library for ASP.NET
Check out WebSync, a full comet server for .NET.
There are lots of tutorials available too.
There seem to be a lot of Comet related projects on GitHub: http://github.com/search?q=comet&type=Repositories&x=0&y=0. I don't see any that are ASP.NET or C#, but you can get an idea of how things work from the other implementations.
I think the best place to start is the Ajax Patterns page on Comet. Also, you might want to have a look at Dojo's CometD project. I've been playing with comet a bit, but there are some browser (as well as server) bugs that makes it inherently difficult, along with the fact that comet is directly opposite to the intended usage of HTTP (client sends request, server responds).
There is an open source ASP.NET comet implementation called aspComet on GitHub. The solution comes with a sample chat project you could check out to get started.

What is a good asp.net (NOT MVC!) reference application for a beginner?

I'm looking for a good asp.net webforms reference application.
We have some developers with VB6 experience, but no web application experience. I'd like to provide them with a couple of example apps that make use of a few simple forms, some user controls, db access, etc. An application that made use of a separate project for classes would be a nice bonus.
There seem to be a lot of very simple examples/tutorials for given features, but I can't find a good reference app that covers all of the above-mentioned topics.
Any suggestions?
I would recommend the ASP.NET starter kits here on the asp.net site. They are pretty diverse. My suggestion would be to actually try the hosted versions until you find one that suits the features you're trying to demonstrate. BeerHouse is a great start.
This one looks pretty interesting. It's a shameless plug for the Infragistics controls, but it looks like they're doing some non-trivial things:
The reference application shows the
use of web services, client side java
scripting, XML data binding and other
real world code samples.

Starter kits are a good place to look...
